- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #756
Date of adventure: 10/11/23
Exploring a remote cave in northern Nevada where, way back in 1911, a couple of guano miners discovered the mummified body of a 6'6" red headed man. The local Paiutes weren't red headed, nor were they that tall....so who was this mummy, and where did he come from? Could he have been a descendant of Viking explorers?

wonder hussy, wonderhussie, wonder hussie, wonder hussey, wonderhussey,
Huell Howser would be proud of Wonderhussy.
Agreed! 🤸🏼
Yes true
Yes..I knew him..he would bless Sarah Jane WoodaLL"...I like this Video..its Great !"!
"A cave! How exciting!"
What we have here ...
I recently spoke to a Pyramid Lake Tribal Member and he told me the same story about the giants. He took it as truth passed on from his grandpa as well as many others in his community. He also added they had a double row of teeth. Interestingly enough, there are indigenous stories, and geoglyphs, of cannibalistic giants in Arizona as well.
Tsawhawbitts -
Jarbidge NV's original Shoshone name meaning valley/land of the cannibal/man eating Giants.
Yeah I don’t see why a handful of Europeans would travel across the ocean just to arrive at a cave and die lol
Love the braids WH, they look awesome
Imagine being retired. Every day is Saturday. And then you realize "it's Wednesday". Thanks for all the work you do to bring us your adventures.
So what will Sarah do whwen she retires? Go work in an office? lol!
@@DougB-pg1tfShe hasn’t had a “Job” in many years, therefore, she is unqualified for ANY Job, perhaps a Cashier at a Dollar Tree, maybe? She doesn’t think of these things, such as, what is she going to do when she cannot do “this” freeloading, E-Begging “thing”, traveling all over the place? She doesn’t seem to think about her “future”,or care much about it. She is going to be sorry and regretful one day, when it all comes crashing down. Good Luck, Sara Jane!
Oh my ! What a great History lesson ...
Very entertaining ❤🎉
No, Sarah is very qualified to be a tour guide, write history books on California, Nevada, the Western US,etc@@apocyldoomer
@@apocyldoomer Wow what an optimistic person you are. So what makes you think WH isn't vested in different financial markets, tools or products? You assume way too much. BTW you can't take it with you.
So nice to get view of a desert not crammed with cookie cutter houses!😊
Thanks for the cave visit and Vista. I'd heard about this cave and the red-headed cannibals being trapped and burnt there.
I think those dogs were saying, "Hey it's Wonderhussy" I want a pet, I want a pet.
So many giant skeletons have been donated, then they just disappear.
The Smithsonian takes them and hides them and acts like they don't k own anything about them.
Abraham Lincoln spoke of the giants.
Love Sarah's "Indiana" exploration videos. So informative and entertaining. What a beautiful explorer. More, more, more please.
Not as many views as the other one 😔
I am so stoked you went here and helped spread the word. I am going next month, been planning it for a year now.
I used to deliver materials to a pallet manufacturing company there, I heard of the cave, never made it out there. Thanks for sharing this with us! Makes a person wonder if Kennewick Man might be tied in with this mystery...
They ended up saying Kennewick man was Polynesian...
And the thing is the Fed's gave Kennewick man remains to the Umatilla tribe .... the descendants of his killers .... he died with a spear tip in his thigh ...
@@wutafungi yes, I remember that.
No
WOW - You are fantastic this is a great story. There are very similar stories about the red-haired giants in Shasta County caves in Northern California.
Hey Sarah Jane, there are also caves down at Fallon that a lot of native artifacts were found in by UNR students doing a dig in one . Some of the items are on display at Churchill Cty Muesem in Fallon . The cave is located in the range of hills at Grimes Point about 10 miles East of Fallon on US 50 . Check that out sometime . Harry in AK (used to live in Fallon for a lot of years )
A mystery no one will ever solve,it's just a legend now!!!🤔
My mother grew up in Lovelock and told me of the Red Haired Indian
caves
Yaaaaay! Thanks so much Sarah for making a video of this cave! I've been wanting to for such a long time that I was almost tempted to send you an email asking you to. If you were close by, I would give you a great big hug. Thank you so much Sarah! Enjoyed the video.
The story of the cave, as I heard it, is that the local tribe were being victimized and killed by a tribe of red haired giants. Eventually they got tired of being hunted (As one often does) and decided to take action. This began a three year war with the giants until the last of them were driven into a cave. The cave entrance was piled with wood and set ablaze. The giants were no more and the people were safe.
The cave has a HUGE amount of soot and burn marks at the entrance.
There was a tribal historian (I forget her name right now) who would give her lectures wearing a breast plate with red hairs woven into it that she said came from some of the red haired giants killed in the war. If they still have that breast plate then MAYBE they could do DNA testing on it.
Some have speculated that the tribe of red-haired cannibalistic giants was actually a band of Sasquatch. Legend has it that the giants would raid the local Indian settlements and steal children (and sometimes, women), and take them off to be eaten. You're right - one does get tired of that kind of thing, so the local natives fought with them, eventually chasing them up into the caves and suffocating them with smoke, as you noted. The 6'6" "mummy" that Sarah mentioned would have stood a few inches taller in life, say - 6'8" or a bit more. Legend has it that other tall skeletons were in fact transferred to the custody of the Smithsonian in DC, and that they are still kept there, but are never displayed and no one except museum staff may view them.
@@SCSlimBoiseID The Smithsonian part shows up in SO many legends. It's so easy for people to go the conspiracy route.
These red haired 'giants' are thought to be the Nephilim or "fallen ones" from the hebrew Bible.
@@user-tn7hc4ww3j NOBODY thinks that.
@@user-tn7hc4ww3j I've heard that theory as well. Never heard the Nephilim associated with canniblaism, though.
Be respectful. Thank you Northern Paiutes for sharing this very important archeological site....
I really enjoy the vast open spaces of Nevada. I'm getting ready to head south to my winter home in AZ. Great video Sarah.
She got really “wrapped up” in this video about mummies.
I’ve always have been so fascinated about the Paiute giants.
Thanks for wearing the Polar Bear Earrings. Great Story and Research. Great Hat too.
Up here in Seattle, we have a couple of mummies, Sylvester and Sylvia, who "live" at The Olde Curiosity Shoppe on the waterfront. Sylvester was found out in the southwestern desert with a bullet hole in him, preserved by the dry sand. Sylvia was an Inca woman, preserved by the dry air high in the Andes. Both are short, though. Sailors used to bring all sorts of curios into Seattle to sell.
Nice sunglasses. Better than the red, white, and blue pair. These look very classy.
Albino Native Americans typically have red hair! I had a Navajo friend that was albino and her hair was red as the sun! She looks like her parents but she was super albino with white skin and red hair.
Wow I was just there yesterday talking about this
I love these educational videos 😊
I did 6 years in Bakersfield, CA, and travelled in Southern Sierra Nevada mountains in my sparse free time.
One place I camped was Piute Mountain, where I learned the Piute Indians used to live.
I was told Piute's were very fierce and blood thirsty warriors.
If you ever camp this area, you will know why the Piute's were fierce, simply adapting to their fierce location.
Great video Sara. I went to school with a red headed giant, she was mean as could be.
I was married to a red head. Not a giant, just craycray
BEWARE red on the head fire in the hole LOL 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Your archaeologist nickname could be Death Valley Sarah. I loved this adventure & your well-researched explanation & scientific skepticism cara linda. A half hour of enjoying your lovely green eyes & braided hair was also a real treat! As a university-trained geology graduate, this is a subject I really enjoy, as you do. Thank you for sharing the adventure with us ❣
Sahara Sarah has a better ring to it. Since Sahara means desert, Desert Sarah makes sense.
Know telling what the goverment keeps from US .
There are the Hevner ruins in Oklahoma. Supposed Viking.
The Cherokee Nation tribes hunted in areas where there was game---even to this day in OKLAHOMA , TENNESEE North East
Governments aren't necessarily the most powerful groups over us. It seems plausible there's a group heavily invested in pushing fictional historical narratives covertly ruling us, for example the biblical story of Esau vs Jacob again demonstrates intense antagonism of red-headed "first-born", elders, or ancients.
The “cave” and the Giants, was often talked about by Art Bell on Coast to Coast AM radio show. Now Wonderhussy needs to seek out “Mel’s Hole” near Ellensburg, WA the so-called bottomless hole to Hell😮
My lady and I visited this cave on a trip to northern Nevada in 2021. Stayed 2 or 3 nights in Lovelock, we really liked it. Also went to the cave near Fallon. Also went to the Arms museum in (I think) Hawthorne. The little old lady was just locking up to go home when we arrived, but she graciously opened back up and stuck around long enough for us to see the whole museum, (which I remembered from an earlier Wonderhussy video) and it was totally awesome! Just another example of the friendly folks we encountered everywhere on a really fun 10 day road trip from Nor Cal to Nor Nevada!
I LOVED THAT VIDEO! THANKS Hussy.
Sarah truly enjoy your adventures. Been in that area a number of times. Now l know what I missed out on. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I will keep watching you and enjoy and stay safe.
Nice tour and history lesson of the caves in Lovelock, NV. Thank you for producing and editing. You did a great job on this adventure. I'd love to see your tour of the town one, when you return to Lovelock. Looking forward to the next adventure vlog. Stay safe and awesome. Best wishes and hopes.
Sandy here: Great video Sarah. Thank you for taking us along and showing us something I'll never get to see myself. Given the circumstances it is likely the mystery will never be truly solved; but that's fine, having mysteries adds spice to life. ❤❤
Another great adventure WH; thank you for taking us along!
Nice use of the quadcopter at start of the video; you should do that more often.
It is such a treat to get your information from outof the way places.
Sarah you need to go to the Humboldt County Museum and in a locked cabinet are two skulls from that cave. They are much larger than a normal human skulls. They also have double rows of teeth. They currently are not making these available to the public. There were photos of these skulls on the internet that I have seen. Somehow these photos were scrubbed.
I'm surprised she didn't mention the double teeth or extra digits
We took our boys to this cave a few years back. Then my brother and his son took the boys here last year. We were all fascinated. I love your videos and hearing your storytelling.
You’re right about desert areas having their own stark beauty.
That was GREAT ! You're the best .
I just love how you tell your stories, you are an awesome storyteller. You are one of my favorite whether abandoned places where you make up stories or where you tell a story like on this video. You are so very talented and its obvious how much work you put into what you do. Have you heard of the Little People of the Plains, there's stories of them in the Bridger Mountains of Montana as well as across the plains. I find it most fascinating and truth often is stranger than fiction. Thank you for your wonderful story and inspiration!
As a fellow red-head from the land of John Cabot (Nova Scotia) hair does change colour! I used to be red, now I’m white! (Almost)! Someday I’ll be back in Nevada, keep up the great work Sarah!
I just thought I should take this occasion to point out your true awesomeness, to anyone that may have missed it ! Your vocabulary is voluminous , your diction is exquisite , and your imagination and story telling ability is fifrst class . Oh , and your cute as a speckeled pup . Keep up the good works . Much Luv .
Yay it's Wonder Hussy day!
Great video!! As an almost 50 yr resident of Nevada, I've never heard this story!! Thank you for all the interesting info!!
Great adventure I always enjoy getting any information about local people points of interest etc. Thank you wonderhussy !!!
Superb as always
I've gassed up before in the darling town of Lovelock⛽️.
G'morn' from NorCal!🤘🏼✌🏼
One thing is certain, these places in the middle of nowhere always have legends associated with them. Wonderhussy does an excellent job of sharing this in her videos. Thanks Sarah ,stay well. ❤
Mostly they have legends because no one was close enough to call BS when those early explorers came out of the wilds with imaginative tales.
People love a good story whether it's true or not
@@feoxorus But its not just the explorers tale did you not watch till the end.
Physical stature is closely tied to nutrition. The plains Indians who ate bison everyday were described by the first whites who encountered them as giants. Excellent, interesting episode.
Just awesome, thank you for the tour. Stay safe
Good morning Sarah Jane!
I have been waiting for you to do this story!!! Thanks 😊
Neat bit of info
About Lovelock. Beautiful landscape. Thank You Wonder Hussie.
Fascinating stuff! Tales of cannibalism seem very pervasive in some southwest cultures. We made a vid about Chaco canyon and I read a couple respectable works on the subject, which did not include any tales of cannibalism, but we get more angry comments about that from Natives (likely Navajo) saying we have it all wrong and all those kivas were cells to store people for eating. I’m with you though. A skeptic and one who relies on powers of observation and measurement. Humans are very superstitious and imaginative creatures.
I know it is redundant, but you are a very good story teller and you do a very good job of research.
Nice! Im loving the drone shots in this! and wow what a story, thanks!
Like your braised hair, appropriate for the wilds of Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona. Keep up your humor and show. Totally enjoy.
As a geologist, I worked there in the 80s. We called it Liplock, There was at that time houses of "Ill Repute".
Very interesting…. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. Well done. Thank you.
Love the "Death Valley Sarah" look!
You don't have to wear little clothing or yoga pants to look HOT
Over a half century ago, an old Paiute man told us of the red haired cannibal PYGMIES that they fought and finaly killed all of.
Thanks for sharing, very thought provoking
Lots of stuff to see and know about in Lovelock. Home of Edna Purviance, Charlie Chaplin’s longtime leading lady. Visit the ever expanding lovelock museum which is partnering with local native tribes for a truly unique set of displays.
YAY!!!! The braids again. Love 'em!
Rumor has it that the two guys that found the cave and excavated all the poo eventually went bat shit crazy...
A mine is a terrible thing to waste!
I ordered Sarah Winnemucca's book earlier this year and it's a good read, Life Among the Paiutes. Thanks Sarah for the tour and the stories, your looking g real snazzy in your outfit. I'm having a really quiet day, something is amiss in the Matrix.😅😅 Love much Old Kenny.👍❤️🇺🇸
Thank you for the new adventure! Yay!
You always are traveling to new places and I find this very interesting where you always go. Happy travels!🥰🤟🤟
Maybe outlaw Josie Wales kinfolk LOL 😊
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's not my preferred kind of terrain. I enjoy going along with you on adventures. Thank you for taking us along.
I didn't think so when I first moved close to such a place but it really grows on you. When you get off the paved roads, off the gravel roads and out on foot you see a surprising amount of life and interesting features
@@feoxorus Cisco, Utah!
The Piaute people had some awesome blankets made from rabbit furs. They'd make ropes from the skins, then weave the fur ropes into a blanket. A 100 fur blanket was a sign of wealth.
Paiute native Americans are native to.great basin Nevada , California , Idaho and Arizona
Thank you so much for another really great video!
Cool story and site. Love the braids!
Excellent vid and beautiful views!
I played a gig there with a country band, back in 97. Great people…
The red headed giants were real and were an existential threat to the indigenous people, back in the day…They ate them.
I've been to Lovelock, when I was going to Reno when I was on my home from Pahrump to Canada. Lovely little town.
I share your love of Nevada, and it's beauty.
You really do your research…. I appreciate the information you provide, and makes me want to visit the sites you feature ….. thank you
There were multiple migrations of humans to the Americas as long as man has been alive. From the various land bridges or shallow seas during the various climatic changes or from Pangea itself (when all the continents were connected) if the timelines we assume aren't accurate. Giant sophisticated stone monuments and structures spread throughout the globe, including the Americas, featuring similar tool marks and machining evidence and precision we can't easily replicate today, give a strong hint that a lot of human history is still a mystery. Academia has been doing its best to cover up outliers since the time of Darwin to maintain the theories of the "god killer, " hero to the elite and pretend scientists. Real scientist welcome new data and never destroy old. The Smithsonian has "lost" or "misplaced" too many finds turned over to them over the last century, making their shoulder-shrug explanations infuriating.
Good video, nice shades. thanks.
Magnificent Panoramic View
Great story as always❤
Thank You so much!
Great video! ❤ the Hussy!
Another nice historical Wonder adventure.
Fascinating video!
Great analysis Professor Sarah
GREAT talk as you always do! this one had a great subject
Lovely, you pretty thing I love the outdoors and exploring!!!
VERY COOL SARAH,,SAFE TRAVELS
Great piece. Love the background music!
Very pretty landscape
You’re beautiful inside and out!!! Super fun to watch your travels 😊
Saw the Sarah Winnemucca statue at Carson City, NV Capital Building, on my recent road trip. Pretty cool and deserved.
The Death Valley Wonderhussy get up is one of my favorites. Sarah Jane in a remote place doing family type video
making and has really nailed storytelling here with lots of research. Great job!
I think the mummy's red hair is more likely the result of having been bleached out by exposure to the acidity of the guano than him having been European. But it's also a slight possibility that he was non-native.
