  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #756
    Date of adventure: 10/11/23
Exploring a remote cave in northern Nevada where, way back in 1911, a couple of guano miners discovered the mummified body of a 6'6" red headed man. The local Paiutes weren't red headed, nor were they that tall....so who was this mummy, and where did he come from? Could he have been a descendant of Viking explorers?

I recently spoke to a Pyramid Lake Tribal Member and he told me the same story about the giants. He took it as truth passed on from his grandpa as well as many others in his community. He also added they had a double row of teeth. Interestingly enough, there are indigenous stories, and geoglyphs, of cannibalistic giants in Arizona as well.

The story of the cave, as I heard it, is that the local tribe were being victimized and killed by a tribe of red haired giants. Eventually they got tired of being hunted (As one often does) and decided to take action. This began a three year war with the giants until the last of them were driven into a cave. The cave entrance was piled with wood and set ablaze. The giants were no more and the people were safe.
The cave has a HUGE amount of soot and burn marks at the entrance.
There was a tribal historian (I forget her name right now) who would give her lectures wearing a breast plate with red hairs woven into it that she said came from some of the red haired giants killed in the war. If they still have that breast plate then MAYBE they could do DNA testing on it.

Some have speculated that the tribe of red-haired cannibalistic giants was actually a band of Sasquatch. Legend has it that the giants would raid the local Indian settlements and steal children (and sometimes, women), and take them off to be eaten. You're right - one does get tired of that kind of thing, so the local natives fought with them, eventually chasing them up into the caves and suffocating them with smoke, as you noted. The 6'6" "mummy" that Sarah mentioned would have stood a few inches taller in life, say - 6'8" or a bit more. Legend has it that other tall skeletons were in fact transferred to the custody of the Smithsonian in DC, and that they are still kept there, but are never displayed and no one except museum staff may view them.

Up here in Seattle, we have a couple of mummies, Sylvester and Sylvia, who "live" at The Olde Curiosity Shoppe on the waterfront. Sylvester was found out in the southwestern desert with a bullet hole in him, preserved by the dry sand. Sylvia was an Inca woman, preserved by the dry air high in the Andes. Both are short, though. Sailors used to bring all sorts of curios into Seattle to sell.

It seems plausible there's a group heavily invested in pushing fictional historical narratives covertly ruling us, for example the biblical story of Esau vs Jacob again demonstrates intense antagonism of red-headed "first-born", elders, or ancients.

Also went to the Arms museum in (I think) Hawthorne. The little old lady was just locking up to go home when we arrived, but she graciously opened back up and stuck around long enough for us to see the whole museum, (which I remembered from an earlier Wonderhussy video) and it was totally awesome! Just another example of the friendly folks we encountered everywhere on a really fun 10 day road trip from Nor Cal to Nor Nevada!

Fascinating stuff! Tales of cannibalism seem very pervasive in some southwest cultures. We made a vid about Chaco canyon and I read a couple respectable works on the subject, which did not include any tales of cannibalism, but we get more angry comments about that from Natives (likely Navajo) saying we have it all wrong and all those kivas were cells to store people for eating. I’m with you though. A skeptic and one who relies on powers of observation and measurement. Humans are very superstitious and imaginative creatures.

I didn't think so when I first moved close to such a place but it really grows on you. When you get off the paved roads, off the gravel roads and out on foot you see a surprising amount of life and interesting features

The Piaute people had some awesome blankets made from rabbit furs. They'd make ropes from the skins, then weave the fur ropes into a blanket. A 100 fur blanket was a sign of wealth.

I played a gig there with a country band, back in 97. Great people…
The red headed giants were real and were an existential threat to the indigenous people, back in the day…They ate them.

I share your love of Nevada, and it's beauty.

There were multiple migrations of humans to the Americas as long as man has been alive. From the various land bridges or shallow seas during the various climatic changes or from Pangea itself (when all the continents were connected) if the timelines we assume aren't accurate. Giant sophisticated stone monuments and structures spread throughout the globe, including the Americas, featuring similar tool marks and machining evidence and precision we can't easily replicate today, give a strong hint that a lot of human history is still a mystery. Academia has been doing its best to cover up outliers since the time of Darwin to maintain the theories of the "god killer, " hero to the elite and pretend scientists. Real scientist welcome new data and never destroy old. The Smithsonian has "lost" or "misplaced" too many finds turned over to them over the last century, making their shoulder-shrug explanations infuriating.

I think the mummy's red hair is more likely the result of having been bleached out by exposure to the acidity of the guano than him having been European. But it's also a slight possibility that he was non-native.
