    Date of adventure: 1/18/24
While at my grandma's 90th birthday party last week, my aunt assigned me a mission: find the grave of my great-great-grandmother, Eliza Yelland Perryman. We knew my great-great-grandfather was a miner in Kennett, CA -- which is now submerged under Shasta Lake. But where are their graves? Join me on a history hunting expedition!

Greetings from Cornwall, Sarah Jane. We live remotely on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, which is about 12 miles from St Austell where we often go grocery shopping. Cornwall is a very beautiful county in the south west of England. Many people here consider it to be separate from the rest of the UK because of its Celtic heritage. Also, there's been a bit of a revival in the Cornish language in recent decades. Cornwall has a fabulous coastline with over 200 beaches, which can become very busy with holidaymakers during the summer. Evidence of mining is everywhere and tin mining dates back to the Bronze Age, but is no longer mined commercially. In the St Austell area, china clay extraction has been taking place for over 250 years and carries on to the present day, especially at one vast opencast site. Well that's enough local information to bore anyone, so why not visit Cornwall and experience your ancestor's roots for yourself? Durdatha whye!

The Cornish miners have an incredible history in California and especially Virginia city Nevada. they were the movers and shakers and teachers of the new guys in Western mining.

Not all miners are poor. Poor people have the plaques on the cement slabs. The size of his tombstone is witness to his success, the fact that he was able to raise as many sons as he did is also testament to his success. I'm a very successful miner and I'm not poor. Just because I like to play in the dirt and play with rocks I, personally, have more gold than Fort Knox. The only poor miners are unsuccessful, drunks, bad gamblers, and or visit the whores. Awkward.

Our Grandmothers were absolutely incredible women. Imagine forging your way through the wilderness of early America with your husband and having 12 or more children. There were no doctors, hospitals or modern medicine. If you were lucky there was a competent midwife nearby. We owe our Grandmothers eternal love and respect.

I live in the south west UK about 30 miles from St Austell. Cornwall is well know for it's tin mining history. Some mines actually extended out under the sea the seams were so long. Pasties were made with a thick rolled crust as tin mines also contained arsenic. The main part of the pasty would be eaten and the crust thrown away to prevent arsenic poisoning. It would be great if you could ever come to Cornwall or the rest of the UK for a ancestors hunt.

Eliza was probably buried in the same plot as Thomas. I worked casualty and mortuary for the US Army for about 7 years and that's what we do with spouses and children of Soldiers that have perished if the Family wishes to use the same space. The ground is reopened and the loved one is either placed on top, or the casket is reopened and an urn is placed inside if possible. However, usually only one individual is added to any individual plot, and yes, the grave has to be dug deeper for this to happen if another casket is placed.
Thank you for sharing a little bit of your family history ❤

That's what they did in the 1930s. They flooded towns. In Western Massachusetts back then, four towns were flooded and obliterated, in order to create the Quabbin Reservoir, a water supply for Boston. BTW: You could do a charcoal rubbing of the long passage on that grave marker. Put a piece of paper over it, take a pencil, and see what shows up on the page.

There is a historical monument in East Texas with my great great great... grandfather (Jaun Flores) on it. He was an original Spanish land grant settler that managed the shipping and settlement in 1708. And speaking of grandfathers you would have loved to interview mine. He was arrested for robbing a train in 1923, worked for a circus wrestling a bear(like "Bear" Bryant), his brother was knighted in Italy after WW2, and his other brother my great Uncle Buford blew a man up with dynamite for stealing his moonshine in the mid twenties -- he was a true to form "Hollywood" moonshiner.

Sad that I can’t see both at the same time, but I presume that’s how it’s done to achieve that stunning precision look at the National Cemeteries. Also, since they share one plot, the first to die is buried deep, leaving room on top for the other. I’m so glad you’re enjoying learning about your ancestors! ❤

I'm kind of intrigued about what it looks like 'back there'. I have his ashes on the mantle and I may adhere to one of his wishes and bury his little box somewhere he would like to be. Anyway, A cemetary is an interesting place. If you like history, visit a cemetery. The information there takes a little thought to suss out. When you see ten kids that died before the age of ten around the time of the plague you can put it all together. The folks that work at the cemetery I was at today are nice people. I kind of like it there.

I noticed at the bottom of Edward Yelland's tombstone that LOOM was printed at the bottom and I wondered if he was a weaver. However, a Google search revealed that LOOM means Loyal Order of the Moose, so since he also had the Masonic marking, perhaps he did a lot of good things with these groups. May they all rest in peace.

Seeing Austell being used in the name of a town made me smile…I was born in the small town of Austell Georgia about 20 miles west of Atlanta in 1953…the Austell Hospital was a sprawling 5 room facility with 2 doctors on regular staff 🫣🫣🫣…thank you Sarah Jane for this wonderful video 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

Ellis Island began processing immigrants in 1892 so it is not likely that your ancestor came through there. My great, great grandmother arrived at the docks at the Bowery (southern Manhattan, NYC) from Odessa in 1849 and at that time they only had to register with the dockmaster. Sarah, I really enjoy your posts very much and look forward to them every Wednesday! So much history out there!

Sarah, you could make the text on the back of the headstone readable by taking a rubbing. You place a thin sheet of tracing paper over the stone and rub it with a pencil or charcoal or such. You cant take the paper away for a keepsake.

    • @markpashia7067
      @markpashia7067 6 місяців тому +1

You can buy sticks of "vine charcoal" at many art supply stores that make rubbings easy. Just break off a straight piece and use the long side of it.

Sarah, I reckon your Cornish family members will appreciate your gesture. Fruits from overseas were still quite the treat until long after they migrated. Respects to your Cornish California mining family from Sarah in Blackpool, Lancashire (family from the mining town of Castleford, Yorkshire). Btw you got the pronunciation spot on.

That’s a cool area your people are from up near Redding. I’m a truck driver and I got to spend a little bit of time through there. I really liked Fort Jones, Etna, Mount Shasta. I’d love to go up there on my own and explore. Have fun Wonderhussy. I love your work! You helped me learn to love the desert.

Great video Sara. Its always nice to know the folks of your past family. I noticed earlier in the video that your Uncle Edward Yelland is a honorable Mason and the only thing you forgot to do was to leave a penny at each grave site you visited just to show you were there. Thanks for sharing....

There is chance that Edward Yelland was a member of the Western Star Lodge No. 2, founded in Redding in 1854. His name might be registered in the Lodge rolls.

Oh that was AWESOME! I loved the story you shared of your great great grandparents, and I was very excited when you found their graves! I'm glad that the cemetery had an office with good records and directions.....that in and of itself was a huge blessing....as an amateur genealogist myself, I can't tell you how deflating it is to go to a cemetery where your ancestors are known to be buried, but the records have been lost to a fire or something! I also enjoyed hearing about the story of the mining town where your great great grandparents lived--remains of which are now under Lake Shasta!!! There are other old mining towns in other parts of California which suffered the same fate too. Thanks for mentioning the Saint Thomas ghost town by Lake Mead.....I definitely need to watch the video you made there.....I have wanted to visit that ghost town, but I have never managed to find it--despite many visits to Lake Mead while staying in Las Vegas. 5 star video!!! Thanks a bunch! 👍😀♥️

The way graves are set. Is you could have two graves set one on top of the other. It's not that your grandma didn't have her own grave or tombstone. It's still full practice now. The second name is added later to the original tombstone. My parents have the same set up. It's called, 'till death do us part.'

I lived in Red Bluff for 42 years before moving to Mississippi. I had 3 kids and we spent nearly every weekend at Lake Shasta. Whiskeytown has a nice beach. Fond memories. I'm weird and I like to wander in cemeteries and spent many pleasant hours getting stoned and wandering around where your great-grandmother is. The graveyards here in MS are much older than the 1860s.
