  • Dead Space 3 might be the most infamous game in the series. Despite two strong prior entries, publisher Electronic Arts demanded bad changes to make the game less scary and increase revenue, fans of the series disapproved, and Dead Space 3 failed to find an audience.
But with a little more care, Dead Space 3 COULD have been good. So what happened to Dead Space 3, and what would you change about the story to improve the game?
With rumors of a remake on the way, we might see EA take a second attempt at Dead Space 3. Here's how they could do better.
    Chapters:
    0:00 - Intro
    0:33 - What Went Wrong
    3:49 - Dead Space 3 (Before)

Honestly, the best part about the story of DS3 is how it portrayed the Tau Volanthians. We come across them, thinking they were the OG creators of the markers... only to find out they were just another victim of their influence. What we thought was gonna be them ruining the cosmic horror aspect of Dead Space actually turned out to be them adding more to it, cuz nothing screams "Cosmic Horror" like introducing a dead race of far more advanced aliens that could not escape the galactic horrors that currently plague humanity. It helps to enhance that sense of hopelessness and dread.

The Tau aliens and the military base personnel both sacrificed themselves too to prevent the new moon from forming.
      Aliens froze the planet
Humans off'd everyone and destroyed any research / most research and the key activator to prevent the device from unfreezing the planet.
In a way adding a little bit of hope where sacrifices doe the greater good.

I remember hating the story of this game the first time I played through it solo. It was so dumb and jarring how Carver only existed in cutscenes and would always find a flimsy excuse to abandon Isaac as soon as it shifted to gameplay. It made it really hard to take it seriously when they tried to act like friends. I actually enjoyed my second playthrough in co-op much more. That's clearly how the game was meant to be played.
I wish they would have just changed the story completely for the single-player campaign and written Carver out of it or something. He so obviously exists only to justify a second player being able to join at any moment that it really hurts immersion.

The 'Am I a good man part' is a great reason to keep Carver and build upon him. But hearing that dev say he would have preferred that Ellie was the co-op partner has given me a radical idea for a DS3 remake: make all three of them playable. Split the games chapters among the three of them. Give Ellie her own badass suits, give each character a signature weapon (Isaac's plasma cutter, Carver's rifle, Ellie's... screwdriver). Make co-op optional whilst not forcing single player to miss those areas, maybe by making the Isaac/Carver/Ellie NPC companions for the duration of the side mission.

    • @KevinHelpUs

Most of the other story bits are fine but Ellie pretty much got her character from the previous game assassinated. 1:48 Deadspace 3 is weird in that way. It's kinda like a plate from a buffet full of a lot of stuff that's individually great, but together it's not cohesive. The setpieces can be fun, the mood where you're out in space on these ruined ships trying to survive and floating in the void near this undiscovered planet is excellent, as is the The Thing-inspired feeling of being in a frozen wasteland surrounded by horrors. The weapon crafting is fun, and I liked building a revolver that could rip Necromorphs apart in one shot, or making ridiculous custom guns.
...The problem is that none of it makes anything cohesive. The crafting is fun, but why am I gonna make a specialized Line Gun-like tool with the timed mines when I can build a Line Gun with a _better_ launcher, or an assault rifle with a grenade launcher? Especially when that last thing lets me just smoke Necromorphs easily, taking out so much of the horror?

The funniest thing about Dead Space 3, for me, is how the game opens with you escaping a Necromorph outbreak on the Moon's colony and almost nobody even seems to acknowledge it happened.
It's the closest Necromorph outbreak from Earth since Altman found the Marker in the Yucatán Peninsula, there's an active Marker spreading its influence on the people in the colony & there're violent Unitologist fanatics actively spreading the signal, but everybody is more concerned with getting away from Elton John's legion of Scientologists to find Ellie's impressive ballistics in a galaxy far far away.
The games prior to 3 instilled a great urgency in not letting the wrong people bring the marker back to Earth, but in the final game where we're flung into and outbreak on the closest heavenly body to Earth? That's not actually a damn big deal, actually.

I'd like Dead Space 3 remake... Sort of. Not exactly. I want the original vision. Earth dies. Then Dead Space 4... A group of survivors, chased by this threat, looking for a new home world, hidden from this threat, scavenging equipment and facilities, just one step ahead of total defeat, against impossible odds, with rapidly dwindling human survivors (and you must ensure certain amount survive, in the end, to win.. and you can't know if it's enough or not, until you actually find a new home world.. because if you lost too many, humanity is too depleted to repopulate, and you have to replay again). This can go on to Dead Space 5, 6, so on, depending on how good the writing is. Would be excellent 👌

Maybe even, by Dead Space 6, you make contact with surviving two ancient galactic superpowers, what unleashed this bio weapon against one another, millions of years ago, in some long forgotten galactic war, and lost control of it, sterilizing the galaxy. They are now only shards of ancient glory, and maybe even still at war with one another, and this super weapon gone wild .. this eventually can go on into Dark Space 8, then human survivors attempt to escape the Milky Way all together, on basis of alien technology, and aliens don't exactly want to share the tech, because it keeps them secure from the threat somehow.. so humans getting it, means they get over run too. This can go all sorts of ways into Dark Space 9, so on.

    • @theflame5919
      @theflame5919 Місяць тому

Finally, as ultimate horror ending, humanity does escape, to a new galaxy.. only to bring this affliction to a new galaxy with them... That can then become basis for new set of Dead Space games, there eventually humans must return to home galaxy, to destroy the source of the threat what is now sterilizing the other galaxy.. and it can get uber dark, there in the end, humans fail, and both galaxies become dead space, with humans regressing to pre industrial era, on hidden world, traped for fear of exposure in that state.

I know he pretty much passed in his DLC back in DS2, but I felt the connection of him and Isaac being pretty much ones who survived, ever since the whole incident with the Ishimura, would’ve made for some interesting chemistry between them.

The turning of Norton from super simp who would doom all of humanity because of petty jealousy to an Unitologist plant is actually a far better idea. You have no idea how infuriating that part of the plot was.
Wait, question. If the marker was making both Carver see his son and Isaac see Ellie, and both are dead at that point, who is Danik holding hostage when demanding for the codex?

That's......a real twist I like and can go for. I mean, the Marker gets what it wants and screws with everyone to do it? And it's revealed that the last moment together is them fighting over someone not even related to anyone in the scene? That's a massive gut punch

I felt Dead Space 3 was not the best installment but it wasn't bad either. I enjoyed the chilling plot twist in that we learn the natives of Tau Volantis were just another civilization that fell victim to the Necromorphs. What's even more insane is that a writer revealed that in Dead Space 4 we would have learned there was a bigger fish, something the Brethren Moons were terrified of.

One of imo the biggest middle fingers from DS3 was how at the start on the moon of saturn or jupiter was it?
    A necromorph outbreak happens.
And we just easily get out of there on a train into a spaceship and leave the planet / moon to die.
Then we learn everytime it happens in a large populated area the ascension was it? Where the necromorphs combine!
The event starts and it forms another brother moon
Wouldn't that start to form another brother moon?
We just left a literal moon colony by itself 😂
And it was a city. You could tell by the large apartment buildings and trash everywhere it was a hussle and bussling large city.
Plus the moon colony is waaayyyy closer to earth than wherever far away the ice planet was at

    • @WeaverOfStars
      @WeaverOfStars 5 місяців тому +2

Oh its way worse than that. The Moon Colony that you see at the start of the game is Earth's moon actually. The New Horizons Lunar Colony makes the Sprawl look tiny which suggests that their was probably billions of people that were condemned to being killed by necromorphs at the start of the game due to Danik detonating the Marker.
That in itself kinda made just leaving it to die being stupid. That many people dying to a Marker could of done a Convergence event all on its own.

    • @fumothfan9

Despite 3 sucking, I've actually played Dead Space 3 way more than 1 or 2. The list of things that are off-beat in 3 is very long, but I would focus on changing two things. First, when you use Stasis for the first time to get across the highway, causing a massive traffic accident and Isaac nonchalantly goes "oops" is in my opinion the single most disgusting breach of tone in the series. Yeah the back-and-forth between Norton and Isaac is pathetic, but it all rests on EA-Isaac being introduced to us as a psychopathic edgelord. It's unforgivable.
The second thing I'd change would be to have the final area filled with water, to substitute for zero gravity. It's a water planet with water-based aliens, and you could make a ton of compelling rooms and puzzles for thawing off sections and ensuring oxygen supply as you unlock new rooms and so on. Much later, Subnautica came along to remind everyone that underwater horror is a very powerful (and proven) concept too.

Not quite the same as a trauma induced anxiety but what you said rang true to me. Being the best man I can be, whether doing what I should or simply going out in public with my family has been hard. I can feel numbness, symptoms similar to heart attacks and mood swings that are hard to tame. I’ve learned to accept my symptoms for what they are and appreciate what I have and what I can do over time, and the best ways to approach dealing with the consequences for when it gets bad. One thing I can’t ever seem to get over is feeling guilty for when it gets bad. Thankfully, my daughter and wife both understand and help me with what I need to do. Ok ok my top 5 things thatll make DS3 better
    5. Make Carvers hallucinations available for free and not just behind a paywall
    4. Give people a better understanding on which pieces go to which weapon to craft
    3. Flesh out Carvers backstory
    2. Have it where we could potentially play back and forth between Issac and that marine at the opening of the game ( cant remember his name ) and have it where it eventually leads to where his path ends and where Issac continues from there
    1. Please, please, please have it where the love triangle between Isaac, Norton and Ellie is scrapped or better yet just make it where Norton is just an associate nothing more and not some dickhead of a new boyfriend who bitches about his girls ex being in the room

I just found your channel through "I Fixed The Callisto Protocol's Story" and followed that up with this one. Two things:
    A) I find your version of Dead Space 3 much more appealing than what we got. Meaning well when you screwed up doesn't mean a thing. You still screwed up and hurt people.
    B) I just wanted to say that I'm happy you still have someone in your life. I ruined a lot of personal relationships with friends and family after I left police work. I was cold and a jerk a lot of the time when I didn't realize it. Even when I really meant well and was trying to give sound advice, I came off as a dick because I didn't consider the feelings of others, only the outcomes of the courses of action they were about to take. I didn't do well. Doing better is the only way to repair what you have damaged. I wish more media understood that when attempting to make a story relating to post traumatic stress.
I'm doing better now. I hope you are to.

I think that DS3 would’ve been better narratively if they had Issac, Carver, and Ellie as playable character that had different story missions and paths but were all connected to the same plot similar to the way GTA 5 does. No co-op just the different characters in different areas doing their part to meet the campaign ending. For example if Ellie had to go find a circuit breaker to get an elevator working and carver left to look for a manual or something you could pick who you’d want to play as out of the 3 which would create replay-ability. As for DLC! I would’ve loved to see what happened on DS2 from Ellie’s POV but we’re on DS3 so instead of that, idve had the DLC be about the outbreak on earth now; it’d be about getting to a main communications building to send a worldwide broadcast of what’s happening and planning an evacuation of the planet. That’d at least open the doors to a DS4 and the story being about escaping earth. To keep things grim following the dead space vibes, make it so the moon being killed is just not an option, leaving mankind to run from earth and be happy with just surviving…for now or have them blow earth up somehow so that way when they fly off in the distance the credits can roll with some somber rock music while a floating hand drifts across the screen or something lol but hey that just my opinion 😎

Yes, it does remove a lot of the cosmic futility. BUT...something I've grown to appreciate is horror meant to empower.
Issac's seen some shit. He stared intot he abyss...and the abyss blinked first. He's done running, he's done hiding. He's a survivor, and more than anything, that's what the Marker fears. Someone who was subjected to every horrific thing the Marker could conjure, and yet survived.

On the topic of a DS2 remake i believe that the story and gameplay are perfect as they are from what i remember so i think updating the graphics and a few tweaks plus all dlc included would be perfectly fine.
However i do have an idea where you can play as different characters in their own story missions on the sprawl kinda like a "(insert here) in one game" where for example you experience not only Issacs time on the sprawl but also Ellie's experience during the sprawl outbreak and Weller from the DS2 Severed dlc and maybe Vandal from the DS mobile game. I do realize this would be a massive undertaking but if it happened it would be amazing.

One of the things I didn't like is that there was not enough EarthGov. Sure terrorists this and terrorists that, but c'mon - EarthGov won against Sovereing Colonies Armed Forces, it studied markers and made copies here and there, there was an after credits scene for DS2 (I'm still salty that it didn't lead anywhere) where it was revealed that Titan station was just another site and maybe even planned accident to study the full marker activation process. EarthGov HAD to have a lot of resources and not just a one ship and one squad of people left. If it had fallen so low the whole society would've been destroyed and we saw that things were functioning normally at the start, with a lot of transport vehicles moving everywhere, with lights in windows, meaning that people were living there alright. PLUS EarthGov knew about necromorphs, since there was an outbreak in Altman times that they've been covering up ever since, so they 100% had to have a counter plan.
Other than that - yeah, Ellie was supposed to die there. I was really thinking that it was a markers illusion, just as you are suggesting here. I really don't like how they butchered her character to make her a damsel in distress that can't do almost nothing without help - she was not like that in DS2 at all.
I also just now realised that Isaac didn't have a character growth at all. Huh. Guess I didn't notice, since I played it with a friend from the start and we were much more interested in Carver hallucinations and differences of what were experiencing. A shame, really - this mechanic and the dlc are clearly showing that Visceral could make another masterpiece, but were not allowed to.

This re-scripting of DS3 is a great idea! Even with keeping the whole "earth dies" thing.
I have for years been saying that a theoretical DS4 should be Issac doing his engineer thing. Building a solution. Earth might be gone, but so are most Unitarians. The Tau Volanthians built a machine that can pause unification; maybe it is Humanity's turn to build something that can fight back on a planet sized scale too. The ending could be some distant future alien species that are experiencing Necromorphs and they find Issac's records - plans for ships that can fight back. Planet cracking ships modified to rip parts off the Brother-Moons and destroy them piece by piece.

Or here is a thought and one that would make more sense during the gas chamber Carver throws Ellie to safety and takes her place telling Isaac to get the codex back and player 2 takes over Ellie. Ellie gets a suit upgrade and at the end Danik manages to kidnap Ellie somehow at the isaac throws the codex Danik releases Ellie and Isaac shoots Danik as he deactivates the machine. Ellie escapes and Isaac defeats the Moon solo

Man, this was quite the video. I remembered that I hated Norton's guts for basically butting into Isaac and Ellie's moments 😆 I also wish there were more of those Co Op rooms because the differing experiences was pretty funny with you sounding like you were actually going crazy to your buddy. I do wish that Carver's development wasn't solely tied to these and were more for fun and a little more lore to add on to a more complete backstory for him.
As much as it pains me to think of Ellie dying, the way you set up the confrontation with Danik made for quite the interesting twist since Isaac couldn't really have those types of hallucinations anymore which were one of my favorite parts about DS2.
I would love to see them remake the other 2 although I would be more interested in 3 since I don't believe much more can be done to 2 as it already felt like a great game.

I want a radical shift for DS3. Ellie and Isaac assemble a group of people touched by the markers. They all still struggle with that history, and still have visions because of it. This leads to various tensions in the group, and them having to work through the marker's influence. They still have a mole, who is someone that hasn't been touched by the marker and just lies about it.
Co-op is no longer a thing. Instead, we switch perspective between multiple characters throughout the story. Sometimes you play as a character who can die if you fail a mission if you don't meet certain requirements. Your crew gets thinned out no matter what you do, so it can feel hopeless as you lose characters that were thought to be integral to the survival of the mission.
Ellie and Isaac just shave by at the end, permanently altering something that the aliens before had created and they KILL OFF the brother moon species at large. They both breathe a sigh of relief, now free from marker control.
It's a dumb and simple story, yes, but I'll be damned if it isn't what most people would find playable and fun. In DS2 Isaac destroys the marker. He frees himself from its influence. Then when all hope is lost, Ellie comes in and saves him, even alluding they'll be romantic partners. No one complained about it. It was spectacular and fun, and we felt like winners. Save the day, get the girl. DS3 could be a repeat of that story, even a continuation and growth of their romance, and I doubt many would complain. People want happy endings, and destroying the entire necromorph lineage would be a satisfying end to the all the pain and suffering our characters have been through.

I’m still bummed out about the DLC ending, and NOT because it was “too dark” or whatever, I’m so sick of the assumption that if a story has an ending that is dark in content and I don’t like it, it’s because i wanted a “happy ending” when what I object to is a poorly executed ending.
I liked the ending for the base game quite a bit; it was such a natural resting point for the series. Isaac follows the Necromorphs to the idea’s logical endpoint: A whole ass planet is a Necromorph. Ancient alien temples, big dramatic sacrifice, and how does it end? A crackle on the radio… and Isaac’s voice calling out. Out from the black. From the dark. Hey Ellie, come look at this. It’s Isaac, I’m just out here in the deep dark, just out of sight, and I found something cool, so come out here, Ellie, come out of the light and the warmth and step into the dark. Into the cold. Into the vast black empty, the nothing, the D E A D S P A C E where nothing is known to live, so anything unknown could be there, living or…
it was a delicious ending; it perfectly encapsulates the spookiness of space that DS was all about, and it leaves the trilogy concluded but the series in a position to go ANYWHERE. Maybe the necros left a power vacuum and something else could fill it, or maybe when prevent convergence something stranger begins to happens. They could have taken a moment to breathe and think where it should go next.
The DLC rips a huge fart and says “nah, it’s all necros and only necros and they invade earth, so it’s just DooM again. You know what’s even more of an escalation than a Necromoon? Two. Two of them. Woooooahhhh oooh aaaahhhh isn’t that nuts”
but it’s not, because we’ve seen undead apocalypses on earth, and we’ve seen a Necromoon, and now the ending has zero unknown elements. Nothing to speculate about, it’s DooM. Hell on earth. Necromorphs coming out of gas stations and shit, gotta shoot the pump boom explosion hey let’s just have guns now, and we can play as Leon and Chris and Jill and Claire and it’s just Resident Evil now, hooray we stopped it from being the thing it was, now it’s just like everything else and it sucks, thanks EA woohoo!!!!!

This was an interesting take on it!
For me the story was, overall, alright, with two major exceptions, of the love triangle, and Issac suddenly becoming a defeatest. Let us not forget, Issac refused to accept defeat, or give up on stopping rhe Marker in Dead Space 2. I expected this story to start out with Ellie and Issac trying to disable the Church, or spead the word.
That said, my bigger issue was the execution on every other front of the game, which displeased me greatly.
The art style felt like a downgrade, where suddenly the envrionmenrs were all terribly boring, or repeated themselves in cookie cutter ships, and the enemies became bland zombies. Such as the beginning of the game, where a strange city is portrayed, but it lacks much character. Compare it to The Sprawl, with all of its interesting signs, and unique passageways--- suddenly we just have bland concrete, or cubic rooms with very little interest. This continues on the ships, with boring texture work, and on thr planet, with large areas of just snow... Aka nothing.
The enemies took an imense downgrade, gameplay wise, and visually. Now many of them simply look, and act, like zombies. Picking up weapons, and scarcely evolving. Often, when doing so, becoming a boring 3 tentacle torso, rhat walks in a teribly silly way backwards towards you.
While the fameplay felt fun, it didnt feel like Dead Space anymore. The faster enemies, the lack od Stretegic dismemberment, the fact that there was no longer any weapon or ammo management, no interesting upgrade paths, or the feeling of hunting for goodies to upgrade things.... it felt lien a boring generic game, and not at all like a Dead Space game.
Gone was the slow methodic pace from the originals, making sure you shoot limbs off to slow your enemies before detesting them- trying to conserve ammo of specifix types. Now, you simply shoot mindlessly, and your enemies will die.
This includes of course, the human enemies, something that also completly changed the tone of the game. Something i truly dispised, largely in arrt, vecause of how destructive they were.
Unitologists value the flesh, they make an extreme effort to put anyone who dies into cryo.
They would not, result to suicide bombings, or explosives. They would respet to viral weapons. Or ideally depressurization of large areas of a city... Not the utter nonsense tou see in the game.
With that story/gameplay issue pointed out- i would like to say i do love the overall story, of Humanity having once tried to harness rhe Markers, realized they were being manipulated by them, and doing the ultimate "self sacrifice," to stop it.
It was quite interesting to see that story revealed, and the moon to be shown as a convergence event near completion.
The execution of that story though. Left much to be disired, and as i said, every other aspect of the game... Well, broke my heart.

I have no PTSD and i won't act like i have, but what you said about you Ex reminded me of mine. That part about trying to be a good man, to mean well... to be better. I had a Girl that loved me, even though i was, difficult... because i was thinking i am difficult, that i am a burden... i became a burden.
Now she is gonna and... one day maybe we will be friends again... but i wanna be better than that... i wanna be the true me, the one that hides under all the pain and sorrow... because it is a warm blanket that i know so why shouldn't i stay in this warm bed?
Thats what she made me realise when she left me... that there is a world beyond that bed of, pain, sorrow and selfhatred.
So i wanna leave all of that behind. I started hitting the gym, started Bujudo and even wanna try some stuff out.
The wound is fresh and it will take its time...
But one day i will be that good men she saw in me, that for over 10 years i couldn't see, because i never left that time behind.
I know i am just a random dude, but from my deepest part of my heart, i wish you the best men.
That there is a better tomorrow for you and that you can become the good men people see in you

They shouldn't have called it Dead Space 3, It should have been called Cutscene Simulator. I think there's over an hour of unskippable taking the controller away from you.

I love DS3. Outside of Coop, it made sense. Isaac has faced this twice before, he is emotionally hardened.
The DLC waa fantastic and brought a canonic reason for him to be mindfucked again.

To really have fun in dead space 3 you have to play co op becuase me and my friend did and of course it got a little boring in some areas but we had a pretty good time so to the dead space 3 haters go get one of your friends to play co op of with you or something and come back and tell me your experience because it may not be scary but it can be very fun (also play on hard mode it’s way to easy on normal and hard is just more fun)

I like your changes yo the story. Carver's story was done well in the actual game it's a shame that it's player 2 only.
I had the luxury of playing 3 in co-op with my wife (at the time girlfriend) with side-by-side tvs so we both got the full experience in that run and it was fantastic!

  • @jacobkyle4631

Eh as a long time dead space fan, i thought the fact some of the parts were co-op only were easily skippable in the overall aspect of the story. I also loved the direction they went with in how they made it very action heavy. It just makes sense how much Isaac would have to deal with given the fact theyre trying to go stop the marker home world (or what they thought was the marker home world) but i could definitely see it having taken some different direction to more horror aspects. Honestly i think it was such an awesome game and i wouldnt change it except write out more side quests to the game that dont lock only specific to co op. Itd be cool. I think the team that remade the first game could definitely give the 2nd and 3rd games more parts to those to give more back story to it honestly.

You're video is awesome. I'm glad you made this since it's highly likely that we'll be getting a remake of the series ever since the success of the Dead Space Remake as you mentioned.
I really hope they fix number 3.
As a fellow PTSD member, 😂
I know that not every traumatic experience is the same. But if there's one piece of advice you can offer me, would you mind sharing it?
My traumatic experience happened five years ago. And I'm only now getting therapy because it's after effects are very debilitating to my life.
Hope you live a fullfilled life man, great video and message!😊

I didn't like DS3 the first time I played it, but enjoyed parts of it. The second time I played it in co-op with my sister, and I was playing as Carver. That was one of the best co-op experiences I've ever had, because of the creative hallucination interjections. It was total chaos at some points with me and my sister just yelling at each other lol

You’ll have to swap out gameplay mechanics for this one. The biggest issue with the horrors of the game is that the mechanics kind of fail it.
The large open white expanses where the enemies pop up at your feet like clockwork, the forced co-op, the generic mix-and match weapons with zero feeling of ammo scarcity, the fact that the game is balanced around allowing you to shoot enemies where ever and with any old bullet instead of requiring the more brutal methods of 1 and 2, the oddly bullet-spongey humans whose limbs somehow won’t even fall off to a plasma cutter until after they die…

    • @KevinHelpUs

Probably so, yeah. I tried to limit the scope of the video to just the story, but the gameplay definitely feels less polished than 2.
