  • I found yet another gem at Goodwill, and happened upon it during their 1-day annual half price blowout. I got this G-scale (1:24 scale, I think) New Bright set no.185 garden train set in original box for less that 7 bucks! I found one set on EBay going for 50 bucks, some cheaper, bit also single track sections approaching 10 bucks a piece (and my set has 18 pieces). It’s battery operated (6 C-cell batteries) and perfect for outdoors or around a Christmas tree (if we ever put one up with the kitties around). I wish the plastic track had silver rail but for 7 bucks, no biggie. I was going to set up on the dining room table but it’s too big! Chessie was scared of the engine. Runs backwards as well as forward. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for deals on additional track and rolling stock. Some switches and sidings would be nice.

    Originally one could add household oil to the tank that had a screw behind the smokestack and would smoke. Wasn't a reliable smoking device, the wick in the tank never got enough oil to keep it from burning black before long. A small filament was used to heat the oil on the wick.

      It's been so long I'm not sure, but try rotating the bell on top of the loco 90 degrees. I seem to recall that doing something.

      turn the black knob behind the bell clockwise

      Doing that moves the bottom of the lever underneath the knob and holds the flapper down , stopping the whistle.

      Could be the batteries. Is there any battery acid corrosion in the tender's battery compartment? I often find that is old toys I buy second hand. Once the corrosion is safely cleaned up and new batteries are inserted, stuff usually works.

      @Logen Edgell If there is visible corrosion on the battery terminals, a Q-tip soaked in vinegar (and a little baking soda) might help. I usually end up using a file to shine up the leads, and if you have a Dremel tool with a teeny wire brush bit, that can work wonders.

    The chugging is super well on that engine. I have four engines from new bright that run, and I have an engine of that exact model with the same problem. It’s an easy fix though, in case you’re curious

    • @Allegheny580
      @Allegheny580  6 років тому +2

      I'm guessing it has something to do with traction. I'm not even sure that loco could take on adding another car or 2 without slippage. Maybe adding weight to the loco somehow, I'm guessing (???) Yeah, I'm curious. :-)

    • @adamcordell
      @adamcordell 6 років тому +1

      So my new bright engines all are capable of pulling 6 cars at once due to me tweaking them. I changed the gearing to make them 5/7 slower than normal and added a total of 4 grams to each engine. 1.5 in the back, 2.5 in the front, and added tractive tires to the front drivers, so now it has some pulling power. I also reduced the battery requirement down so now they all take 4 C batteries rather than 6, and I’m currently working on a infrared model from new bright. Hard fixes, but to me it makes them way more reliable. The chugging is actually caused by plastic scrapping on metal. Four plastic spikes are attached to the back driver pair and the metal flap is attached to the frame of the engine, so as the wheels turn the metal bends and clicks every time the metal bends straight again. Anyways, I primarily work with these engines so the work is worth it to me

    • @MrWolfSnack
      @MrWolfSnack 4 роки тому

      I have never seen one at Goodwill. Mainly because my Goodwill throws all the toys in the dumpster. They banned toys from being sold in the store because parents let their kids play with them in the store and leave toys all over the floor. Instead of banning their kids from being in the store, they just never sell toys and chuck them out so everyone loses.
      I've pulled all kinds of toys out of the trash I later go through and list on eBay and sell to a good home. Once I found what evidently was a rare variation of a Barbie doll, and that went for over $120. Never seen one of these train sets yet though.

    the only question is: How many cars can a battery operated train pull?

    • @Allegheny580
      @Allegheny580  2 роки тому +2

      Depends on the train set. Some can only manage an extra car or 2. I put a second engine on the back and use it as a pusher, running in reverse. At least you can double the number of cars. :-)

    • @Allegheny580

      6 C-cell batteries in the tender power the loco. I don't think this one smokes. If it does, I'd use cooking oil.
