As a Japanese person, I would like to add a little more detail. It is true that people wear masks because they have a lot of hay fever, but what he was saying was for a specific type and at its peak. If the symptoms are severe, people wear masks for almost a year. In addition, some women wear masks when they go out without makeup. There are several other reasons as well.

Some people use the mask to hide themselves, because of being insecure of how they look or because they are objectively ugly, sad truth

    • @gotakazawa408
      @gotakazawa408 3 місяці тому

@@Gilbertineable Air pollution is not the main cause. In fact, phenomena such as yellow dust and PM2.5 have a significant impact in countries like China and South Korea. On the other hand, while Japan does experience some of these pollutants drifting over, the levels are much lower compared to those countries. As a result, visitors from China and South Korea are often surprised by how clean the air is in Japan.

I have been to China several times from 2006-2008 and there it is quite common to wear the masks too since there has been a lot of pollution especially in cities like Beijing. On certain days the air was really exhausting and a lot of people used facemasks to prevent the biggest dirt to enter their inner organs. In Europe especially in Germany face masks have been very uncommon before covid in the public crowed.

But in Japan is more explicit this change of behavior, and as you said, sometimes it's hard to know what a person is truly feeling or wanting to express because they hide themselves behind their 'politeness'.

People across the world wore masks during the Spanish influenza , including Americans. Some countries continued to do so when sick even afterwards, others did not, I wonder if because Japan is quite small in area, and the culture tends to be more group focused than the US tendency towards self-focus, Japan kept that habit while Americans lost the habit after a while of no sickness (this is not me saying one culture is better than the other, I think all cultures have good points and bad points, just pointing out the differences).

It is not a coincidence that the country with one of the largest populations of single, lonely, and unsocial people is also the country where everybody wears a mask. Face expressions are the key to any human communication. If you are spreading fear of other humans, of any contact, how will you make friends, fall in love,... be social? I have lived for many years in Asia, and there is a kind of fear of human contact that does not exist in Europe. We hug, we shake hands, and we even kiss to say hello (in Serbia it must be 3 times). As much as I prefer the Asian way (no kissing), it creates lonely and isolated people. "People are discussing and dirty, so let's wear musk, isolate ourselves as much as we can, don't talk to anyone, don't touch anyone, just live in front of a screen" - how any society can exist if their people think like this, if people are scared of each other?

In the US, especially in the college campuses, Asians are the only one group still wearing masks. First, they are very self-abasement; secondly, with mask is telling others that “I don’t want to talk to you”. I have raised this questions to many Chinese here, and not surprised the same thing happened in Japan. Nothing related with allergy and illness, or public transportation, they need to go to see a therapist.

Culturally I wish Americans were more considerate of others, that is something that really is not demonstrated. People don’t even instinctually practice consideration, they have to make it a grandiose effort and expect to be thanked for it. But in reality ir should just be the way people behave in general, it should be done without thought. I don’t like wearing face masks myself but I did begrudgingly do my part during the pandemic, and got the shot so I could be exempted from it at my work. But funny enough I did wear a face mask prior to the pandemic for yard work cuz mowing the lawn and such really got me on my allergies, some slight discomfort from the mask beat hacking my lungs up from the pollen lol.

As much as I understand the use of masks for certain cases, I find it a little over the top in Japan. I have seen people driving their cars, ALONE, windows closed and using mask. Why would anyone need to do that? Other cases I see is for example, someone walking near the river or in a park (any big open space) with mask. I feel that in some situations (if you go to a hospital and don't want to have the risk of getting contaminated by someone else) it's totally reasonable. But for other mundane things I think it's a little exaggerated. Yes, there is the pollen season allergies and so on, but most of the time I see many people who is using masks on their chins or under the nose, which completely defeats the whole purpose of it, so I find it a little stupid to be honest.
The more I see this kind of people the more I start to think that they are doing it more to hide their faces than protect themselves.

The idea that such characteristics are genetic is mistaken. It’s social and perhaps historical but not genetic. Actually there is a dark history in Japan related to eugenic theories of the 1930s and 40s which attempts to suggest that ‘character’ is based on blood and thereby race. In the 60s some doctors in Japan even claimed that it was impossible for a non-Japanese to master the Japanese language as it was learnt in a different part of the brain from other languages. Of course this is wrong and was quickly proven thus by non-Japanese who learnt to speak the language fluently.
I think face mask wearing is a social phenomenon.

Traveled to Japan last December and the majority of people did not wear masks, however a lot of people still did. I knew it was Japanese thing in advance, though. Nevertheless, never wore a mask myself, because it is silly if you’re not ill and don’t spread viruses with your coughing and sneezing.

I'm an Australian living in the country area of Japan and out here the percentages aren't high as this. A lot of restaurant workers and staff don't wear masks anymore. And as for me, someone who never wore a mask his entire life before COVID, I do wear it from time to time for example parking and popping into a conbini for a snack. I fell the guilt of not wearing it. ultimately i wear it just cos it's only for a little bit. Thankfully I don't have to wear one for work anymore. I hated wearing that thing all day.

Yep, I wear a mask when I take a train. I generally don't wear one otherwise. Sometimes when I go to the grocery store and I'm not feeling well, I'll wear one too.
I've noticed that in the city there are fewer people wearing masks than in the suburbs.

I am mostly speaking in one of the most democratic States, California. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area so we had been highly mask mandated.

I don't live in Japan and I still wear a mask whenever I go out, but not before Covid. Covid has taught us a good lesson in cross infection. Although getting Covid is not life threatening, getting the flu, the normal flu is still an unpleasant experience.
Hence, I still wipe the supermarket trolley handles down and wipe all products before putting them away.
This is not paranoia, but good hygiene practice learnt from Covid.

Everyone here is right in a way. It's true the virus is so small it can pass though a surgical mask fiber like a mosquito though a fence. What's wrong about that idea though is the virus doesn't travel though the air as just a virus particle but mainly on top of droplets which are much bigger and can be blocked by masks. If you don't wear any mask at all you'll get the full load of all particles bigger and smaller and get the full load. If you do wear a mask even if it doesn't block all the particles it'll block some and depending on the situation, that might mean the difference between getting enough viral load to get sick or not. It could be the difference between getting a mega dose and getting long COVID or getting a smaller amount and you having a mild case. Since no mask is fully protective you'll always get a little COVID in your system so your immune system gets to train itself on it but you might not actually feel sick. I make my daughter wear a mask at school nowadays but before COVID she always gets sick at least 4 or 5 times a year but after wearing a mask she only gets sick like once or twice. And one time it was because she sat right in front of another kid that was hacking up a lung. No mask can project you from that. I have no doubt masks help but to what extent depends on a lot of factors. I don't feel weird wearing a mask at all. It just got over politicized in the US. People should be free to do what's best for them.

During that whole insanity, I kept telling people
In Japan, they wear them when they are sick, so they don't infect others. It doesn't protect YOU. it protects others, when you are sick already. Not complicated. They've been doing it for many years, because they always go to work, even when sick (like us lol).
I do think it's unfortunate so many Japanese people kept going in to work instead of working remotely. I feel like that's why they had such a bad rate of infection. That, and perhaps already being a bit weaker to disease than people of other races whose ancestors mixed a lot more and lived through more plagues.

I like that even pre pandemic, people wore masks during allergy season, for simple colds, or to skip makeup! Lol and other reasons. I wish it were seen as a simple safety and politeness tactic in the US. But instead, there are Americans who will bully or attack others for wearing a mask. I have an 8 month old son, and I've barely taken him outside of the home because I find I actually don't trust Americans as much as Japanese. I lived in Japan 6 years and my husband is trying to get a job in Japan so we can move back. I like the structure and politeness, personally.

Since having the baby I've moved apartments a few times trying to find a unit where neighbor's marijuana smoke doesn't come in through the vents, and it seems impossible, even though recreational marijuana is still currently illegal in the state I live in. Also, there has been an increase in shootings where I am due to relaxing gun laws in the past year or so. These are things I never had to worry about in Japan. I mean, school shootings are a thing here. I'm afraid to take my son to school when he gets old enough. Also, as a teacher, it's impossible to make enough to retire here. I still have a chance abroad. But thank you for asking! Anything I like about America also exists in Japan, for the most part.

Based on the latest research and the quality of air nowadays, I think face masks are a simple way to protect yourself but mostly protect others. All the literature on viruses suggests people shouldn't be trying to get constantly reinfected. However, in the US and other places wearing a mask even in medical or work settings can cause bad outcomes for you.
