Moved to Ghana from the Uk. Life in the Uk is hell, its all about work work work and nothing else. 95 percent of ur wages goes into rent and bills leaving them with nothing at all. People are actually surviving in the Uk. They have the worse weather patterns. Very unpredictable. Always wet and cold. Ghana on the orther hand is more chilled and relaxed. But u definitely need to have a business here to survive so anybody planing to relocate to Ghana should plan ahead b4 doing so
Kay, you absolutely smashed this interview! Living in the UK is a mental hell-hole, so many of us are leaving or at least considering it. I would love for the people abroad to take heed of what we're saying because if you don't hear, you will feel it when you find out how bad-minded England and America can be. It's true when you say we need to change our mindsets! I am from a Caribbean background, Jamaica & Barbados, and many people there also raise the same arguments Jefferey made based on experiencing poverty - no disrespect, but it's a defeatest mentality and sad that so many believe that all our life problems are resolved in the West like the Europeans are God. Both in Africa and the Caribbean people always say they believe in god, but they worship the white man like he is god and wonder why things are not going better for them. White people worship god in a way that justifies them stealing everything. I am not sure, you have live in ghana before , we live in a country where the inflation rate is about 42% interest rate is about 35 - 40%, to get a job is another thing , even if you get some, the pay for even a degree holder, Averagely ranging from $200 - $300 per month . You employer can even choice to pay and nothing can be done to him/her . For every entrepreneur and as a start up, when you venture into new business, there are shock that might come and you need money to support it . To get a long is a hell and the interest rate to is very high (35-42%) compare that to the west.
Most of us Africans living in the States are in debts and cannot even afford a plane ticket to visit our Mother Land. I grew up in the streets of Sierra Leone, West Africa as a refugee. I was so excited to when I met my USA girlfriend and came to USA.trust me as hardworking as you can be. Africa is my home and I miss it every day. My family and I are now trying to pay off our debts and go start over in Africa. Great debate. We all need to collectively go back and build our home

There are so many people in Ghana who are living a better life compared to some of us here in 🇺🇸 America . Think how successful Jeffery would be in Ghana if he built some public toilets along the motorway and kept them immaculate instead of going all the way to New York to clean someone else's toilets for minimum wage.

I live in the west. Left Africa where my my government did not even know that I exist. That is what neglect is. Lead people to seek opportunities some place else. But now after over 30 years, I want to come back and put everything I learned on the table and teach others to do as well.
Us folk born in the West see the opportunities in Africa. Those born in Africa see the opportunities in the West. Therefore, the solution is for us to embrace each other. Use the resources - education and money - made in the West to develop Africa, if possible. I will add that African nations could extend longer visa stays and an easier, faster route to citizenship for Diasporans too.
Africa would be in a much better spot if they had only reached out to the Diaspora and made strategic partnerships. All African countries had to say is "look we can not offer you very much but come here for a short stay so you can detox from all that racism and hardship in the west, before you go back." That in itself would have helped so many diasporians around the world.

Its a real paradox that to build Africa we need the diaspora mindset, and yet so many Africans can't seem to attain that mindset without first growing up in the diaspora. There are lawyers, doctors, accountants and every type of skilled professional you can think of with UK qualifications who don't make that much. What's he planning to do - rob a bank?
The problem with what he said that you have to leave Africa to find success is Mindset. When you live in developing countries many times you don't see opportunities right around you. Yes travelling open your eyes to the very opportunity. But it generally takes a shift in mindset.

It is not because I don’t love my Island but there are no opportunities for me in Jamaica . For the pass twenty years I have been living in Florida. And because of the opportunity that was given to me I was able to buy my mom a house cash in Jamaica. She was so happy. every day she call me to say God bless you my daughter. I’m saying this to say that if I was still living in Jamaica I would never be able to buy my mom a house. Listen I heard that Singapore is very wealthy and developed. Kay is killing this interview with his great knowledge and understanding of his history and background. He is very knowledgeable about his facts and can make a non-biased viewpoint because he has lived in both worlds and has the experience because he lived it. Jeffery on the other hand is making some true facts concerning poverty within Ghana but he has a Western mindset that he needs to change fast if he really wants to help his people to have better lives. There will be poor people everywhere in this world. Can we stop poverty? yes, I believe we can if can come together and put the proper systems in place so that people can be provided for in all stages of their lives and don't have to feel poor and downcast. I live in the West, and I know the hardship here. It has it good points also but will I say Africa needs the West? I think NO. As an American, I’m still with Jeffrey. He’s not overly idealistic and caught up in emotion. He speaks reality. People say don’t come to Ghana for a job. What are Ghanaians suppose to do? Not everyone can start a business. People need decent paying jobs most of the time. So, yes, use the West to get ahead and use that money in Africa. At least until Ghana can provide jobs for its non-entrepreneurial citizens. One size doesn’t fit all. It’s easy for us in the diaspora to ignore the advantages we’ve received from the West when we go back to Africa. It’s not fair to guilt trip Africans who desire that advantage.
He could have made his point by saying he wants to make that same money and come back home to invest but he is making it look like Ghana is a hell hole you need to leave and not even look back . These comments are very ignorant.
With today inflation and interest hike, it impossible to save money from the west and to invest in Africa! You keep running in a loop hole of debt that never end! I have been living in the west for 20 years and can attest to that!
And who's going to create the jobs and fight for good pay, pensions, free education and a high quality health care system if everyone japas? What Jeffery and his ilk don't appreciate is that ordinary working people in the West - not governments and oligarchs - fought for the systems he admires and wants to benefit from. I don't think it's a guilt trip. I think it's a great debate but for most of us Africans living in the diaspora, we know the struggles here. Go to LA, Chicago, Charlotte, NY, to name a few, and see the homeless people. Go to the suburbs here in the US and see how people live. And that's the reality too. It's bigger that just the "emotions" I know so many rich Africans who never left the continent. Yes there is a "working system" here in the States but only for the rich folks that that don't care about us. There's poverty everywhere. Not only Africa. The point here is, in order to build Africa, we Africans need to change our mindset and wrong narratives been fed to us. I feel comfortable in Africa. We respect the outsiders in Africa but in USA, I deal with racism at work, out shopping with my kids, my name, hair, and accent will not give me certain jobs here in USA. I fear for me and my kids life here with all the gun violence everyday. I feel safer in Africa, my American wife and interracial kid are comfortable every time we visit. Which is why we are planning on moving back. I used to think like Jeffery until I came to USA myself. It's not all gold and silver overseas. In USA people judge you for basically every single thing if you are black. Even being an interracial couple, people give me sh*t all the time, or will say go back to where you came from. So many ignorance over here. If we all run away from the continent, then we're loosing, we're putting a dent to our economy while boosting the ones that don't like us. I get it, working a minimum in USA or UK might seem like a lot, but if one thinks about generations to come, one should probably go build wealth in ones home land. Also if anyone is speaking with emotions and less facts is Jeffery. We've been using Gold and knew the value of it. The "white man" didn't show us. He needs to research and feed his mind with the right tools.
As a Jamaican who left Jamaica at 18 and migrated to the US, I understand where Jeffrey is coming from. My friends who stayed in Jamaica after high school and after working for a year could not buy a home or a car. I was able to purchase those necessities in a year as a nurses aide then went on to register nurse in less than 2 years. As a young adult I didn’t want to go back to JAmaica because the opportunities are not as plentiful but now as an older Diasporan, I’m now of the mindset that I need to go back and help build my own country since in the US you’re just a number. Kay also made excellent points but it took a while for him to free himself from the UK system and realize he should go back to Africa. Since he did not grow up in Africa, his mindset is different since he’s looking from the outside in. Jeffrey definitely should be encouraged to leave and then in a few years, he will probably appreciate what he has in Ghana. We should stop trying to convince people who don’t have the mindset and work with the people who want to give back to their community.
Very true! Some of us in SA r privileged with education/ engineering backgrounds. So we can innovate. Life in west Africa is hard! Much better in SA with the economy in Pink european hands but getting worse under politicians!

I think ur right. I left Africa at age 9. Grew up in the US. I've been going to Ghana and Zumbabee trying business. When it flops I run back to America for capital. The biggest problem in Africa where developing a business is of concern is TRUST. Being there I realize that it's a real issue that lends itself to poverty. The Chinese, the Indians the Arabs plus support one another however, not the Black man. They will prefer for you to die with your gift and ambition than to assist you. It's call the crab mentally. Fun fact: There is around 207 billion Ghana cedi in circulation in Ghana right now which is equivalent to £15 billion pounds. All you have to do is position yourself so that you can tap into some some of this money by providing goods and services. You can be rich no matter the country you find yourself in. All the giants of the world feel they have the final say because on reason is, their military is strong. Where does the military strength stand of African countries compared to the west? Very interesting conversation. Tho I support both ideas, I’m 💯 for Jeffery. The system in Africa isn’t working unlike Europe and America (tho they have their own challenges). I know it’s a process and we will get there but we are moving at a slower pace as a continent because of poor leadership. For most Africans it’s not about who brought civilization but who is still living up to it. Africans still live in the past and forgets to forge forward. I believe what Diasporans should do is to help hold our leaders accountable more than we want reparations. Because even if reparations are given these same corrupt leaders will embezzle it all. Again, I believe that once we are waiting for this change to materialize, the African should take the least opportunity legally presented to travel and work abroad earn something to feed his /her family, build a nice house, create employment opportunities back home and employ some youths. I live in the UK and the average salary is definitely not £20,000 unless someone has no experience, no qualifications and is under 18 years old. I became a social worker in 2000 and my starting salary was £25,000. When I stopped working as a Social worker in 2020, my salary was £36,000. I earn £20,000 in my part time counselling role now, plus run a counselling business. Everyone I know who has a degree or experience is earning over £30,000 a year. It also depends on where people live and how they budget. My dad was Ghanaian and my aunt from Ghana couldn’t even afford to pay his hospital bills when he got ill. My Ghanaian cousins have all moved to America because they can’t afford to live in Ghana. There are a lot of factors involved.

Diasporans have a different work culture. Right now agriculture is wide open and many diasporans are buying land and doing big business in the villages. Average Ghanaian is not interested. Recently many Ghanaian professionals are leaving their office jobs to do farming business because they are wise and they see the future benefit. By the time Ghanaian youth see the benefit of agriculture and food export to the Chinese markets, it will be too late. The second advantage is new ways of thinking. Diasporans is programmed to be on time. Ask Ghanaian to be on time and see who is late more often in a one month period compared to most diasporans!!! That's just one example!

Jeff is a contrarian but he's making equally good points. Diaspora think in terms of vision. Local folks think in terms of daily bread. There's truth in BOTH. Daily bread will make you want to leave (because you can't worry of future if you die today) but vision is essential for a liberated future (after you eat :)). Kay is talking about "we", not recognizing that a lot of local folks have been talking about "we" since independence - BUT there is also a "they" in most African countries, which is the political elite that doesn't give two damns about "we". This is also a reality.

I live in USA 🇺🇸. I ALSO HAVE BEEN TO ACCRA GHANA 🇬🇭 (CITY) 2019 and also Koforidua and Okorase. I stayed for 3 weeks and i definetly experienced some different things. People thought i was rich. They also called me white woman. prices of everything was increased as soon as people seen my face. I was harshly judged but if i had to choose ghana or usa i would choose ghana. This is the reason in Ghana 🇬🇭 you are free and you can live. In usa you are in bondage. Material things dont matter only freedom. ❤
I will say this as a Nigerian who has lived in the US, LEGALLY for about 25 years .I am not telling any African to risk their life to come to the WEST. But life in Africa is GREAT for the children of politicians and their friends ! My sisters who live in Nigeria have very good jobs because of my father and his connections ! I came to the US legally .I did not know anyone and I got a job the first week ! I had to UPDATE my Nigerian qualifications , and that took about 4 years and once I did that I was equal to any American and started getting high paying jobs. I know doctors who when they first came to the US from Nigeria worked minimum wage jobs for years, while they took exams to verify their Nigerian medical degree . Today they are earning half a million dollars or more a year!! Moved to Ghana from the Uk. Life in the Uk is hell, its all about work work work and nothing else. 95 percent of ur wages goes into rent and bills leaving them with nothing at all. People are actually surviving in the Uk. They have the worse weather patterns. Very unpredictable. Always wet and cold.

I am not sure, you have live in ghana before , we live in a country where the inflation rate is about 42% interest rate is about 35 - 40%, to get a job is another thing , even if you get some, the pay for even a degree holder, Averagely ranging from $200 - $300 per month . You employer can even choice to pay and nothing can be done to him/her . For every entrepreneur and as a start up, when you venture into new business, there are shock that might come and you need money to support it . To get a long is a hell and the interest rate to is very high (35-42%) compare that to the west.

As an American, I’m still with Jeffrey. He’s not overly idealistic and caught up in emotion. He speaks reality. People say don’t come to Ghana for a job. What are Ghanaians suppose to do? Not everyone can start a business. People need decent paying jobs most of the time. So, yes, use the West to get ahead and use that money in Africa. At least until Ghana can provide jobs for its non-entrepreneurial citizens. One size doesn’t fit all. It’s easy for us in the diaspora to ignore the advantages we’ve received from the West when we go back to Africa. It’s not fair to guilt trip Africans who desire that advantage.

I feel comfortable in Africa. We respect the outsiders in Africa but in USA, I deal with racism at work, out shopping with my kids, my name, hair, and accent will not give me certain jobs here in USA. I fear for me and my kids life here with all the gun violence everyday. I feel safer in Africa, my American wife and interracial kid are comfortable every time we visit. Which is why we are planning on moving back. I used to think like Jeffery until I came to USA myself. It's not all gold and silver overseas. In USA people judge you for basically every single thing if you are black. Even being an interracial couple, people give me sh*t all the time, or will say go back to where you came from. So many ignorance over here. If we all run away from the continent, then we're loosing, we're putting a dent to our economy while boosting the ones that don't like us. I get it, working a minimum in USA or UK might seem like a lot, but if one thinks about generations to come, one should probably go build wealth in ones home land. Also if anyone is speaking with emotions and less facts is Jeffery. We've been using Gold and knew the value of it. The "white man" didn't show us. He needs to research and feed his mind with the right tools.
As a Jamaican who left Jamaica at 18 and migrated to the US, I understand where Jeffrey is coming from. My friends who stayed in Jamaica after high school and after working for a year could not buy a home or a car. I was able to purchase those necessities in a year as a nurses aide then went on to register nurse in less than 2 years. As a young adult I didn’t want to go back to JAmaica because the opportunities are not as plentiful but now as an older Diasporan, I’m now of the mindset that I need to go back and help build my own country since in the US you’re just a number.
Kay also made excellent points but it took a while for him to free himself from the UK system and realize he should go back to Africa. Since he did not grow up in Africa, his mindset is different since he’s looking from the outside in. Jeffrey definitely should be encouraged to leave and then in a few years, he will probably appreciate what he has in Ghana. We should stop trying to convince people who don’t have the mindset and work with the people who want to give back to their community.

All you have to do is position yourself so that you can tap into some some of this money by providing goods and services. You can be rich no matter the country you find yourself in. Yes. We need to take control with what’s ours. Kay, you spoke very well. To add: African countries need to invest heavily in their military! All the giants of the world feel they have the final say because on reason is, their military is strong. Where does the military strength stand of African countries compared to the west? I wish we could look into that a bit more.
I think they need military for security persons but they don't need to invest like the west does. Humanity is moving out of the take what's yours for my benefit era. Africa needs to understand they already have what they need. They don't need to go to the united states or europe. Those are countries built on taking from Africa. Now Africa needs to Keep what is theirs, and make them pay the full market rate for anything the west gets. Now because the west only Knows Oppression and taking things through Violence. There will be wars and Conflict because that is the only thing they know. Unfortunately it will most like take world war 3 because the west has zero interest in a fair deal. The only fair they understand is we get everything and you get the scraps. We just have to stop falling for the okey doke, on this leader is bad because they won't give us everything we want.

The system in Africa isn’t working unlike Europe and America (tho they have their own challenges). I know it’s a process and we will get there but we are moving at a slower pace as a continent because of poor leadership. For most Africans it’s not about who brought civilization but who is still living up to it. Africans still live in the past and forgets to forge forward.
I believe what Diasporans should do is to help hold our leaders accountable more than we want reparations. Because even if reparations are given these same corrupt leaders will embezzle it all.
Again, I believe that once we are waiting for this change to materialize, the African should take the least opportunity legally presented to travel and work abroad earn something to feed his /her family, build a nice house, create employment opportunities back home and employ some youths.
And for those saying it’s not always about money. I’m here to tell you that you are all LIARS who are covering the truth. There is joy in waking up and not thinking of what to eat.

I live in the UK and the average salary is definitely not £20,000 unless someone has no experience, no qualifications and is under 18 years old. I became a social worker in 2000 and my starting salary was £25,000. When I stopped working as a Social worker in 2020, my salary was £36,000. I earn £20,000 in my part time counselling role now, plus run a counselling business. Everyone I know who has a degree or experience is earning over £30,000 a year. It also depends on where people live and how they budget. My dad was Ghanaian and my aunt from Ghana couldn’t even afford to pay his hospital bills when he got ill. My Ghanaian cousins have all moved to America because they can’t afford to live in Ghana. There are a lot of factors involved.
This is great to see and hear. The conversation is start of the change in progress... there are many truths... and it is inspiring to see consciousness evolve before my eyes. The shared knowledge is powerful. I hear the similarities in the dream. Systemic oppression is real. Change is happening and the world knows much more of the truth

Diasporans have a different work culture. Right now agriculture is wide open and many diasporans are buying land and doing big business in the villages. Average Ghanaian is not interested. Recently many Ghanaian professionals are leaving their office jobs to do farming business because they are wise and they see the future benefit. By the time Ghanaian youth see the benefit of agriculture and food export to the Chinese markets, it will be too late. The second advantage is new ways of thinking. Diasporans is programmed to be on time. Ask Ghanaian to be on time and see who is late more often in a one month period compared to most diasporans!!! That's just one example!

Jeff is a contrarian but he's making equally good points. Diaspora think in terms of vision. Local folks think in terms of daily bread. There's truth in BOTH. Daily bread will make you want to leave (because you can't worry of future if you die today) but vision is essential for a liberated future (after you eat :)). Kay is talking about "we", not recognizing that a lot of local folks have been talking about "we" since independence - BUT there is also a "they" in most African countries, which is the political elite that doesn't give two damns about "we". This is also a reality.

I live in USA 🇺🇸. I ALSO HAVE BEEN TO ACCRA GHANA 🇬🇭 (CITY) 2019 and also Koforidua and Okorase. I stayed for 3 weeks and i definetly experienced some different things. People thought i was rich. They also called me white woman. prices of everything was increased as soon as people seen my face. I was harshly judged but if i had to choose ghana or usa i would choose ghana. This is the reason in Ghana 🇬🇭 you are free and you can live. In usa you are in bondage. Material things dont matter only freedom. ❤

I will say this as a Nigerian who has lived in the US, LEGALLY for about 25 years .I am not telling any African to risk their life to come to the WEST. But life in Africa is GREAT for the children of politicians and their friends ! My sisters who live in Nigeria have very good jobs because of my father and his connections ! I came to the US legally .I did not know anyone and I got a job the first week ! I had to UPDATE my Nigerian qualifications , and that took about 4 years and once I did that I was equal to any American and started getting high paying jobs. I know doctors who when they first came to the US from Nigeria worked minimum wage jobs for years, while they took exams to verify their Nigerian medical degree . Today they are earning half a million dollars or more a year!! You will not get the high paying job as soon as you step off the plane, but with time and hard work America is truly a land of opportunity!! I wish even 10% of that opportunity existed in Nigeria !

In the West, we don't know how to build a house/basic shelter or grow food. Some of us can't start simple fires to cook. We have no/limited space resources to grow our own food.
