SQUARERULE FURNITURE - Making a Dovetail Joint bench
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лис 2024
- In the summer of 2022, I finally completed the cherry bench that had been on hold for a while.
The middle pillar was additional work, and although it is a simple structure, it was a bit difficult as it required perfect dimensions and alignment.
Because each board was stored for a long time, there were too many dents and small scratches, and during preliminary assembly, I hit the wrong hammer and created a crack in the board. Due to time constraints, it was not shown in the video, but additional butterfly reinforcement work will be done.
Thank you for watching.
Name : Dovetail Joint bench
Material : cherry
Size : 1200*280*450H
Finish : AURO 126 Oil

Your work is amazing and you show there is elegance in the simplicity of design. You have a beautiful family.
Thank you for the compliment. We will work harder to make furniture! 😍
Looks great. Thank you for showing fixing a gap in your dovetails. It’s good to know I’m not the only one making those fixes. And a professional who makes beautiful pieces needs to make repairs too.
Repairs are always happening. Hahaha thank you for your sympathy. have a good day!
Congratulations to your well deserved award! Watching you humbly work on these has made me a better woodworker. As an American I take a lot of time laying out and marking each piece as close as I can. But the we just make out cuts much quicker. Watching you take the extra time to make your cuts as precise as the layout has slowed me down and my joints fit much better! Thank you from abroad!
Thank you for your congratulations!
It's a little difficult to interpret. I'm sure I can communicate well with you haha.
My son is studying English hard.
He dreams of one day being able to freely discuss woodworking!
Always remember safe woodworking! Have a great weekend!
Congratulations on the UA-cam award!
Thank you very much! !💕💕💕
Thanks for the video! In sketchup instead of multiplying your copies like you did at 2:11 you can just drag the dovetail geometry to the other end of the board and then DIVIDE by the number you want. So to get the result you have here, drag geometry to where you want the last one to be and then type “/4” and press enter. You will end up with 4 equal divisions or 5 equally spaced geometries. I hope this helps
As soon as I saw this post, I got goosebumps.
I opened SketchUp, made a pin at the end like you said, and did /4, and something amazing happened.
@@squarerulefurniture i am so happy this helps! :) you have nothing to be embarrassed about with the quality of work you do. I love your videos. Thank you
It seems like there is no end to learning!
thank you. Have a great weekend!
Or use a ruler and angle it until you get the number of divisions you want, a simple trick and it works!
A bench isn't a simple bench when it's made by you, great job! Best regards!
Hello friend, it’s been a while since I said hello!

These are cotton gloves that are easily available in South Korea.

thank you~!

Have a happy weekend and thank you!
I love that you also show the new tools you buy in these videos. Have you tried a western dovetail saw yet?
Yes, I used it about twice. The sawing direction doesn't suit me a bit, so I mainly use a Japanese saw.
Great build.
Thank you for watching! Have a happy weekend!
Congratulations on the 100k!
THANK YOU! ❤
This design is stunning. The perfect bench? Thank you for sharing this. I would like to make a video request of you sharpening your hand planes. Your videos are my inspiration to woodwork!
I just found your youtube short for sharpening. thanks! Excited for your next video
Thank you so much for your interest and watching. Have a nice day!
😉
Hi, beautiful as always. Can you tell me what finish you are using? Thanks.
I use auro 126 oil made in Germany. ❤❤
Congrats on the new play button.
Thank you for your congratulations! 💖💖💖
I do enjoy watching you work to make such beautiful furniture. Congratulations on your UA-cam plaque! I do have one question. I would like to know the name of the T-shaped tool you use to measure a distance from an edge. I've seen them before, but it looks like a better tool than my combination square. Thank you.
Made in Japan.
It's a Matsui Scriber Gauge, but it's not available on Amazon.
Search for Matsui Scriber Gauge on Naver or Yahoo Japan.
@@squarerulefurniture Thank you so much. The scriber gauge looks like a much better tool than using my combination square.
The downside is that it's a little expensive!
congratulations with your 100k plate!
It's all thanks to you! thank you!
@@squarerulefurniturehave been following you since less than 10k:) great work and i am happy for you!!!
I know! You are my old friend!
Please take care of us in the future as well. Thank you always
Great video. First congrats with the award.
I love this bench, especcially the stretcher with the vertical braces. Very original.
I also have a question about the dovetails.
You have always been a very clean and practical man. Simplicity and elegance.
I am a graphic designer, not a wood worker and i always followed the design principle that 'Form Follows Function'.
Those super skinny dovetails, do you honestly believe that the form follows the function? They are so thin, that they look like they weaken the joint instead of strengthening them.
Is this purely about esthetics and your own vanity? Or do they actually 'work'?
Lovely kids by the way and i can't wait to find out what a mortise plane is.
hello. It's a bit difficult to interpret, but it seems to be about the joint and the size of the pin. It seems natural that as one side becomes relatively larger, the other side becomes thinner. Usually, the work is divided equally between the tenon and the mortise, but a lot of the aesthetic aspects were reflected. It's a bit difficult, but when discussing joint strength and durability, we consider the area of the two joints.
If the area is the same but the sizes are different, the durability is bound to be relatively low, but we tend to work as long as it meets the durability required for our use. (Here, it is mainly important to know in which direction the force will act and whether there are additional reinforcements. .) I don't know if it's a sufficient answer, but the conclusion is that although it focuses on the balance between design and durability, the aesthetic aspect is also reflected. If you have any questions, please comment anytime.
thank you!
Watching him fix the crack… “holy crap, he is human!”
sure ! I make a lot of mistakes too!
Can I ask, what were you checking for at the very beginning of the video (0:20) when you broke the off cut piece on the table saw?
Also - Congratulations on the award! Your quality of videos and craftsmanship are fantastic and I look forward to each of your videos.
Check the progress of cracks by looking at the cross section of the tree.
Usually, the entire cracked area is cut off.
Thanks for watching!
I expect more . It’s very pedestrian
It's difficult to interpret, but thank you!
Stunning, can I ask the wood you are using? Cherry?
Yes, it is cherry wood from North America!
@@squarerulefurniture thank you, I look forward to your future videos
thank you!
At about 9:17 you are using sliding tool to lay out. It has the big t-head in it. where did you get those and what are they called?
Made in Japan.
It's a Matsui Scriber Gauge, but it's not available on Amazon.
