For me the idea of putting things away instantly doesn't work with my brain. But doing a 5-minute pick-up three times a day has the same effect and I find that far more manageable and less stressful.
LOL - loved your beat-up wall. Not internet pretty but the lunch boxes and back packs aren't in a pile on the floor and you know where to find somthing in them at 8 pm at night instead of searching the house for where the back pack might have been dropped. It is simple and convenient and no one has to think about it. That is really how organization should work
Me too. Some things I have done is to break it down into smaller tasks like what was stated in the video. I also have started using a timer on my phone. It's amazing what you can get done in 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes.
@@lilypuddthis is my favourite way to get started! I set the timer for 30 minutes/an hour and I say I’ll just do what I can in that time. That’s usually enough to get me going to finish it off.
I think this is my biggest problem! I’m not saying you have it but I have adhd & many people don’t know that this is one of the more problematic symptoms of adhd, just getting started. ADHD is an executive function issue which is why it’s a problem getting started and organizing your thoughts in order to figure out how to go about it. My point is that whether you have it or not, many people find it helpful to follow content creators, Drs, or others that talk about this stuff and give tips, advice etc on it
I am in the process of cleaning out and organizing my craft room. It is taking forever because when I find a large quantity of things that I know I hardly ever use, I can't process what to declutter , so I get overwhelmed, freeze up, and then I give up.
Love your videos! One of my biggest organizing mistakes: I organized our pantry, but didn’t put labels on the baskets. I just assumed everyone would see what the baskets contained and they’d keep like items together. Nope. Chaos won after only a week or so. I was so discouraged I didn’t fix it for a couple months. Now that the baskets are labeled everyone knows what goes where. It’s been successfully organized for over a year now. 😍
My mom has done this lol. We have very different ways of organizing and associating things. One time I used our PASTA POT MADE FOR MAKING PASTA to make *gasp* PASTA. She got SO mad at me because she always uses a strainer instead when it comes to three of the pastas we use (I can't even remember which ones), and a specific amount of servings determine which strainer she uses. When I tell you this wreaks havoc🤣 All of that is to say, what makes sense to us individually is totally valid, but we as humans sometimes take it for granted and forget that just because it makes sense to us doesn't mean it "makes sense." If that makes sense😅
This is exactly what happened to our family. I organized my parents pantry with the same dilemma. Over time after labeling, everyone got it and now we don’t need the labels anymore
And I am retired and like I said pushing 70 there’s only so much you can do in a day and then if you have a very busy day, it takes another day to heal but I think my biggest job is trying to get rid of stuff
For upkeep, don't walk back & forth in rooms, have a basket. Anything that doesn't belong in your current room goes on the basket. When you move on to the next room, you take from the basket & put in if necessary. This way you don't get distracted before your room is done.
@@cjhoward409This lol. I'm pregnant with twins and when it got too painful to spend all day running errands, puffing back and forth around the house cleaning was the only exercise I got! 😂
I never declutter because i dont allow clutter to begin with 😮 Friends say i have Ocd i think its called. The reason my home is always neat, tidy & clutter free is because its the way i was raised. I had a very strict disciplined military father who ran all 5 of us kids like a platoon of soldiers. All orders had to be obeyed pronto. Only sickness was the exception. We all did the dishes, mowed the grass & shoveled snow. We learned to cook, do laundry & how to iron. When i become an adult & lived on my own i had no problems how i lived at all. My entire work career every boss i ever had praised me for my organizational skills in being productive, saving time & money. For me its always just been a normal way of life. Before my father passed away from cancer in 2010 i thanked him for helping me & giving me the basic life skills to take care of myself & my son. Well this has been my story & wish all success in decluttering & any other chores you might tackle. Best wishes 😇💙
Sometimes I wonder if my kids would be different if I was more like your father. I grew up in a very tidy home. I’ve tried really hard to keep those habits alive in our own home and my kids just don’t seem to care. The same kinds of consequences and/or punishments I had as a kid just don’t seem to bother my kids🤷🏼♀️like AT all. I don’t get it.
On the other hand, my mother believed, "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself." So, I was never taught to cook or clean. While my mother was whipping through the house, I read.
OCD is not just a fairly common preference for neatness. OCD is a debilitating anxiety disorder that can only be diagnosed by a qualified mental health professional. It consists of obsessional, intrusive thoughts, and/or repetitive behaviors, compulsions, that are difficult to stop. Sure, obsession with cleanliness, neatness, and order can be a symptom, but so can problematic hoarding.
I read the book "The One Thing" which helps. It is about focusing on doing one thing to completion instead of scattered results. Asking yourself, what is the one thing I can do that by doing it will make my life easier. For me, making sure to clean out the kitchen sink, emptying dishwasher is it.
That’s part of the Fly Lady routine which was published 15 +/- yrs ago. It’s (her routine) been so successful that I’m seeing it being incorporated into newer routines, and just goes to show that good ideas bring on more good ideas. 💕
What a timely video for me! Two months ago we had our carpets cleaned, we them moved the kids from one bedroom to another, that eliminated our guest room so that furniture ended up in the office/craft room and it is a MESS! I pride myself in organization but you would NEVER know looking at that room. I’ve been in there a million times to get it organized and am so overwhelmed I leave and close the door as tight as possible. 🤪 Tomorrow I’m going to clean the desk. That’s all. Just the desk. Wish me luck! Thank you for such great content, I love what you put out!
@@ChessieChess I got in there and started. I made very little progress but I started it. My goal is to spend a couple of hours a weekend in there until it’s done! Do you want to work together on our said rooms? Accountability/encouragement partners?
Thank you for talking about false expectations on Pinterest versus reality. It's a real source of frustration and a sense of wasted time for me when trying to declutter / organise a space and it doesn't look picture perfect! I also liked how you showed your space with hooks for your kids' bags and talked about functionality and needs over anything else. It's definitely something I needed to hear. Thank you! ❤
I would paint or wallpaper the unfinished drywall going down the basement stairs to look cheerful, though. The BIG question is -- Do your boys actually faithfully hang up their backpacks and lunchboxes on those labelled hooks? 🤔 Mine would have needed to be reminded/nagged every. single. day. of. their. lives. (SIGH)
A pile is where I put the stuff that I don’t know what to do with, don’t want to toss, and think “hey, I’ll fix it later”……knowing full well that I’ll probably never look at or touch again, unless I’m desperately digging for an all important thingy-paper needed right now because my life depends on it…..then the pile’s a mess to never be touched again. What needs to happen is for someone to invent “the smart paper” that knows when it’s contents are no longer of any use, and voluntarily vanishes.
I’ve been decluttering my closet for daaaays, reorganizing it, & adding decor (fake plants, for example), and I’m LOVING IT!!! It’s one of the smallest spaces in the house (think of regular sized shower or so - maybe slightly bigger), and it’s becoming one of my FAVORITE spaces in the entire house!! 😂❤
Also, I completely understand function over beauty & AGREE with it, but…sometimes beauty actually = function…the prettier & more long-lasting my cleaning tools are, the more likely I am to actually do the mind-numbingly mundane tasks that have to be done…❤
Once when I sorted books, I made 4 piles: Keep, Kids, Thrift and Think About. So when I went to get boxes/bags for some of them, my mom came along, saw multiple stacks of books, packed *all* of them in a big box and put it in the garage. :I She was so happy to help me! So I thanked her and after she left, I had to dig the box out, resort again -- and then I was done. Lesson: always make sure you are helping, not hindering.
I’ve been getting rid of polystyrene and cardboard boxes over the last few months and filling the bins each week. Couldn’t believe how much there was as I’ve been decluttering for 7yrs and I’m organised. (Some was left over moving boxes.) Also getting rid of the ‘what if’ stuff and that’s been 100% trash rate too. It’s been helping me go through what I thought was sentimental too. My op shop is going to have to open an 80s section. So freeing!
Guilty guilty guilty of alll the things! I was doing so well a few months ago. Then I got distracted and was sick and now I’m back to being overwhelmed. So you just gave me the boost I’ve needed to move forward. Thank you ❤
I love how you said we cannot all the Pinterest worthy at all times. I am legally blind one eye is completely blind and the other one is legally blind. Lighting is the most important thing I can say in my house it helps me function and complete all of my house management responsibilities every day. I can't have those really cute pendant lights I need practical real daylight lights. I would love to have cute lights and lamps but I can't I need real lighting. One benefit is I can't really see Pinterest post! LOL I can see other people's houses if they're lit correctly though. The other thing is everything he has to have a home when you're legally blind when things have a home it's easier to find them. Decluttering also helps because there's less stuff to navigate in order to find what you're looking for when you don't really have the ability to look for it yourself! I lost my vision at 30 and now I'm 44 I am a full-time wife and mother and I take care of my house and cleaning and cooking and laundry every day😊
I am currently doing it all wrong. Reorganizing 450 sq ft apartment all at once. Everything is all over everyplace. But that is me. I sort out the things you do not see, like closets, and work towards the general mess. I am praising myself for seeing the piles go to where they need to go. I am taking the time to put quick masking tape labels on everything, later on I can think about making circuit labels . A lot of the crazy happened when I brought in a LOT of craft materials from my old house. I have been at it for weeks, and I do not recommended it for anyone, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and my spaces are so much more organized. So the moral of the tale is, you may have to go about things a way that makes it worse until it gets better. Once this overhaul is finished I can organize like a normal person.
I’m in my 50s and my children are all over the age of 18 and I still have all the problems you just described I wish I had had someone like you when they were six 10 and 14! I would’ve been so much kinder to myself
Your advice to always be decluttering has been so helpful. It has become my habit as I tackle little areas throughout the week to always be working to remove what isn’t needed. With 3 little people there’s still plenty of extra stuff but it helps so much!
I've started doing 15-minute decluttering challenges and it's so helpful! I set my timer and tackle a specific space until the timer dings. If I want to continue, I do. But I let myself stop at 15 minutes if I want.
I do a similar thing. I put the kettle on and will race to empty the dishwasher before it boils. I like the idea of the 15 minute declutter - it makes things less daunting.
It makes me feel so much better to know, that I am not the only one that makes these mistakes! I need to remember that it’s all a process and it’s an ongoing one at that!
OMG! You hit the nail on the head for me with the piling. I am so guilty of piling. I love (and will now use) the saying “pile pow wow”! 😂. I need more “pile pow wows” in my life. Thank you - I love your videos - so realistic.
If piling up things is something a person tends to do, at least try to pile by staggering items in the piles when possible, so that it can be seen what is in the pile .
Great ideas! Thank you so much for the unrealistic expectations section. There’s just no way you can have the time, money, and energy to keep a home spotless with small children. I tried in pre-Pinterest days. You can’t control the gifts coming in. Each developmental phase seems to require more stuff, too. It’s overwhelming because it’s overwhelming! I ended up copying my kids’ preschool; the school had centers for each activity. I called them departments. When someone would ask where’s my book, I would say in the book department-the bookcase. Where’s the glue? In the glue department in the linen closet. I whipped up baked goods in the baking department. It did not produce organized adults, but it did save my sanity and make my life much easier.
I love this. The piles yes thats me and its so true you never get to them once you make them then it becomes either more piles or bigger piles over time. My husband and i struggle with this. And we struggle to declutter because we have so much and no storage space doesn't help. I love hearing not pintrest perfect i love when you influencers are so real. I also love when you share mistakes you make. Thank you so much for all this. This summer my husband and I are working on decluttering and getting stuff out if the house and making more room.
I really appreciate you and your honesty... You always make me think You always make sense You always remind me I'm not Crazy 🤣 And you always remind me to be kind to and love myself 💖
I've been talking about "purging" my clutter for years now. Thank you for making this video - it was difficult to watch the entire thing, but I knew that I needed to hear it. Smaller tasks are definitely the way to go for me. I just have to go into a room with blinders on - looking at an entire room that needs a lot of work instantly triggers my "maybe tomorrow" response.
My stepson’s bedroom was so bad, that, even though I enjoy decluttering, it was a hoarder’s dream (mostly clothes he hasn’t worn in years), and, after 20 mins, I had to leave. Fortunately, he’s taking care of it himself (starting with laundry basket after laundry basket after laundry basket of clothes; I’m 68, and never owned that much clothing in my entire life!).
Great video. I have one last area to declutter but my problem is that in my basement (and if I am honnest it applies to other rooms) my clutter IS so well organised it looks good … but I know it is there so it still bothers me!
Great ideas, as usual. I have finally learned the there needs to be a designated place to store everything, otherwise, no matter what I do, there are messy piles everywhere. I love your videos, thank you💝💖❣
Agreed, Debra. I like Dana White 's videos, another great person's online videos. She promotes asking oneself " Where would I look to find this item?" Then, putting it there, and thinking of that place as the item's home spot I realize that I have many things and many categories, and have grouped similar categories together This has helped a lot.
Just discovered you and am inspired! Side note: If those meds are in the bathroom, I would recommend keeping them in a dry, cool cupboard. The heat, changing temp and moisture can affect their efficacy, even when in a plastic container. Many blessings to you and everyone!
These words and ideas are So true, make so much sense And are So doable! That’s what stops me in my tracks all the time…” oh my gosh, my entire house needs declutterring “…which makes me anxious, which in turn causes me to freeze up into inaction! This advice makes sense and makes the task seem not so scary!
I think piles are a great step on the sorting/decluttering journey, but not the destination. You can’t stay there. I think you are correct on the maintenance. It’s also the hardest, IMO. Great video! ❤ Shirley
Boy oh boy did I need this one. I’m a crafter, live alone, each room is craft supplies, mainly for card making. I have a craft room, it’s filled up, and has been. When I last year other half a yr ago, I felt that All this space can be filled with crafts because no one comes here, my 6yr old grandson when I watch him, he looses it here, lol
I tend to beat myself up because my spaces do not look "Pinterest Perfect" - so glad others understand this! I try to keep things organized, and while it's not perfect, it works for me. Same with our clothes - we just need to try to not be so perfect and just be us! I also struggle with stuff that I don't want to/can't throw away yet, but i don't know what to do with it. So it ends up in a pile.....for a long time! Thank you for this video - you are precious and so down to earth!🥰
This Video was a Fantastic Help to me 🎉🎉 The Bedroom was Exactly my space with the Problem… while every other space gets my attention and Care my bedroom was always the out in the morning and return at night when done for the day… the amount of time I have spent on guilt and headspace could have overcome it But I saw it as one project ( ha ha) Today after watching your video and Putting Away All condemnation - I tackled it for 10 minute increments four times and got a whopping amount done. I just ended up telling myself - this is not a one project deal and tackled one thing then another, it was Mighty Freeing. I like to make my reset time for areas 10 minutes and under excluding the kitchen ( that takes more time). So I am So Looking forward to decluttering the bedroom So I can just reset Easily ❤ Thank You
Great video! When I started decluttering I was overwhelmed & tended to get nothing done. It was more...move it to another place until I decide what to do with it. So 1 evening I had about a half hour to myself before bed & I caught my medicine cabinet out of the corner of my eye as I walked past the bathroom. Lightening bolt! I decluttered it within my half hour. The next night it was my spice drawer and my jewelry box the next. I found the key for me! Small bites of time. My other mind trick (for me) is I ask myself if I could only keep 100 things, would this be one of them? It really helped with sentimental items. Or I pretend Im moving to a smaller house. Would I take this? Anyhow, it took 2 years but Im pretty much done. Now Im maintaining. I stopped shopping just to shop & I watch what I bring into my home.
Thanks for sharing this! I often feel my place needs to look like the videos on u tube & tik tok. I like that you said do what's works for me! I really enjoy you videos!
Thank you for saying all of that. It was what I needed to hear. I keep walking in my bedroom and thinking ugh this mess, but with a 2 year old and a 3m old it’s hard but I am always tired. 😅
I have gradually be getting my house organized to a good standard. I have decided that if I can't sleep, get something done. Anyway, this time around I have come to really understand the need for things to organize into. They give an infrastructure that makes everything sustainable. Eg. to the left of my bathroom sink under the counter is small deep cupboard with two sections one shelf. You can't see or reach to the back of it. I found freezer baskets that fit beautifully and can just be pulled right out easily.
I loved your bit on piles. I haven't heard that before from any of the other homemaking pros. My mother was an expert at that. Always little piles here and there to put away later. She wasn't a hoarder. But then, when the housekeeper was coming, things had to be tidied up. My sister recalls her sweeping her little piles willy nilly into the nearest top drawer. Quite funny, looking back at it.
I’m 77 years old and you taught me a lot. Number one was don’t have piles of stuff. That helped. Also you have to re-organize it more than just once. Thank you so much.
The most important part of your video for many folks is the health sponsor! I'm not kidding! Many clutter and organizational issues start there. Not just the obvious, but the underlying emotional issues for some. Thank you so much!
I am a big fan of your channel and others like Minimal Mom. Both have been really helpful to me. However, I’ve learned one thing: I will not stress about not being 100% organized 100% of the time. I’ve made major improvements, but it simply not worth stressing over or losing my peace over it. I do keep my master bedroom fairly organized because my husband hates clutter, but, my office is on another level all together!
8:15 #5 Combining dissimilar items - This is what I always tell friends and family that want to be more organised. “Keep like with like” is the easiest way to start.
I am on a decluttering journey, I’ve FINALLY realized I have to much. STUFF & all this STUFF is stressing me out, I TRULY feel happy in a clean clutter free home THANK U 🙏 for all ur amazing tips
Thank you so much for your content!! I have to constantly come back and watch videos like this. I had a pile on my dresser for months from emptying out luggage and purses in a pinch. This video made me not only get up and clean it, purge, and declutter but rearrange how my dresser was in my room altogether. Thanks Kallie!!
Thank you for this video. It inspired me this week. I have had my fabric boxes out in my living room for.. ok well we don't need to say how long... and just got overwhelmed when I first pulled them out to measure, fold, catalog and organize on boards to make them easier to see and find. Between your advice of breaking the task down on a list of what needs to be done as smaller goals, and Cassy from Clutterbug talking about setting an alarm for an hour and just do what you can, I made progress on this eyesore. I didn't get a noticeable dent, but I got started, and that felt good. Going to work on it more tomorrow and hopefully over the next few weeks... yes there is so much of it... I'll finally have made a "time to go" pile and the keepers on boards and organized.
I love #2. I have a card table covered with boxes to sort. That used to be my decluttering workspace. Now I have no workspace! It's holding up moving items out of storage to put there. I will make a list of steps to tackle it. Thanks!
So true! I am overwhelmed with many areas that require major decluttering! It’s such a big project in so many areas that I wait for a weekend but still can’t start it! I love the 15-30 minute idea!
I did this with decluttering my wardrobe. Instead of doing it all in one or two days, I spent my morning getting dressed and slowly but surely worked my way through every piece I own. The ones that didn't fit me anymore or that I didn't like, I through away, sold or donated them. it took me about 11 months, but now I'm finally finished and exactly know what I have and want to wear. :)
I would love to see a video where you help someone like your friend with their sunroom! It would be great to see the entire process like making the initial list, figuring out what to do first, doing it, moving to second, etc and how to keep the room from being a disaster during the process.
I've watched your videos for some time now, and your best advice is "Be kind to yourself . . ." You will be bitter if you aren't kind to yourself. Very profound.
I can share a lightbulb moment that I had, that has helped me look at organizing with whole new eyes. Remember that the pictures you see on the internet, tv, videos, and magazines are just that. They are pictures. They are snapshots of a dynamic (changing) situation. And sometimes that's not even true, sometimes you just see pictures of contrived or staged items (advertisements for containers etc) that wouldn't even be a realistic shelf, cabinet, closet the moment the photo was taken. For example a dainty closet system with empty containers in a picture might come out of the wall if you set it up and then moved your stuff in there. The problem with this is that real life is more like a movie, not a photograph. It's a moving, changing process involving different things. And yes it does need maintenance. So whatever system you come up with needs to allow for flux, movement, and upkeep...aaaand sometimes review and adjusting. Leave a little room in your canisters for a bonus size of pancake mix. Put your stuff in places according to how often you reach for them, not how pretty they are on the shelf. Etc etc.
Hi Kallie! I just came in here to say that I don’t need a planner, I actually don’t like planners in general, BUT I just ordered your planner because I’ve been watching you for a while and I trust your content! So I have to give your planner a go!! Thanks Kallie!
My kids closet has been my doom that I have finally started to tackle. I had been puking clothing in it to store but it became a horrible stressful situation and to dig out the clothing I needed became a marathon. So I Bought hangers to put up the clothes that they aren’t wearing yet or not the right season(they have a dresser for current.) I then put their toy bins in the closet so we can control the toy dumping that happens way too much and makes the whole room overwhelming. I’m going to now with the new space made in the bedroom to make shelves for books! And it feels so good to get it done.
One thing I've learned in the past year is that if you put "the pile" into a basket or bin, it is no longer a pile. 😂 You still have to deal with it eventually, but it just LOOKS so much more tidy in the meantime.
@@denisetarabori553 Doing that is my downfall. I'm sitting in my den and looking at all the bins and boxes and shopping bags piled under and on the table that I "use" as a desk. I started tackling the bags, etc. last week and am doing it 10-15 minutes at a time. Now I am able to keep up with my daily paperwork because my table top is clear enough for me to work.
@margaretlake lol every time my boyfriend 'cleans' everything goes into a box/bin/bag not to be opened again for at least 6 mths. Then he forgets what he did and we'll be looking for something specific and its no where to be found.
And some thing about me schlepping around with a basket picking up miscellaneous items I carelessly leave strewn about makes me feel a little tiny bit shamed! L O L, which in turn, makes me more mindful of carelessly leaving things about.
I’m a pile-maker. How can I tackle it instead of piles? For kids toys I always got my kids involved. I didn’t say, “go clean up your toys”, I was specific. I would say something like, “put all the Legos in here and tell me when you’re done”. Then, I would praise them and have them do the next small task. They learned how to clean up and it gave them a sense of accomplishment as well. Every mom I shared this with has thanked me.
I love to know that I'm not the only one who makes these mistakes and I love to organize!! I need to organize my deep pantry and I'm dreading it.I wish I had pull out shelves like you. I hate piles!! They drive me nuts!
I always try to organize so that I could find basic items even if I had a blindfold on. There are so many things to have to think about and process that it really helps to avoid the need to think about where something is or to have to dig for it. Ugh, you are so right about how nothing belongs in a pile. So sick of piles!
7:24 And some people have different categories for what is considered similar items. Like me. I've tried putting all my t-shirts together in the same drawer and all my jeans together in another drawer. It doesn't work for me. Instead, I'm now putting my t-shirts and jeans at the same level of formality in the same drawer. And it will make it so much faster to get dressed, when I know I'm not about to accidentally pull out a "nice" t-shirt on my way to do yard work. I'm also going to have to eventually dispense with the chest of drawers completely, when I can afford open shelving for my closets, but that's not today's discussion. 😅
decluttering : I use the Marie Kondo approach, make a big pile of stuff and dig up item by item until it's sorted ; way more satisfying than bit by bit
I needed this video/reminder so badly!!! I've been procrastinating too much lately. I told my husband I need to watch one of my organizer people. Hopped on to YT and there was this video! Thank you! I'm making my list now 😅
I watched another video that made the distinction between clutter in stasis and clutter in movement, that some clutter is necessary for life. I think it's really important to distinguish between these things so we don't drive ourselves crazy thinking that zero clutter is the goal.
The only way to keep a home clutter free is 1. Have a place for everything 2. Have a process to put back everything into that place 3. Have separate time included in your everyday life/ routine to clean, put away, and keep tidy. 4. Have a weekly, by weekly, monthly time to do the bigger tasks 5. Share the jobs within your family evenly 6. Make it fun- it is not terrible if you’re enjoying it! Good luck! Take time yo sit down with the family to have suggestions for changes- as they all live there!!! Also one of the biggest issue- don’t let repairs get out of hands!!! Only well kept homes can be nicely maintained!!!
I agree with all this but I think it’s easier said than done when you live alone AND don’t know how to do a lot of repairs AND struggle with mental health + hormonal changes/fatigue/insomnia
@@ChessieChess Believe me, I can honestly relate! I learned these from my own miserable mistakes !!!😆😆😆 By the way, cleaning and organizing is a never ending process unless you have so little, that it’s not an issue ( because you are smart and minimalist!) But then would you be reading this? 🤷♀️
@@funfan515 Hi, the thing most orginazing/cleaning/minimalist channels agree on, is not necessarily to have the hime clean and tidy all the time. You live there, thigs are going to get messy. The point of an organizenld home is, that it is easier and faster to clean up, when it gets messy.
This video is so true! We moved two years ago, and after decorating all the bedrooms, hall stairs and landing, we pretty much ran out of money! Everything is so expensive! Pinterest is an amazing resource, but as you say, it’s not real life. I have stopped trying to live up to the ideals I see on there. I am very organised, but there is always more to learn. Thanks for all your ideas. Greetings from UK.
Basically, I couldn't agree more. Yet, from my experience, I think you need to take breaks between decluttering sessions. I'm talking from expewience. I needed to realize what was most important to me, like paper craftng book-making, knitting and crocheting, and embroidering. After I goit a hold of where to put it all into the space created by declutternig I was happy and I'm able to access my stash by the way I'm going to use it where. This wasn't easy, believe me. Take your time to arrive at the decisons. I love to do crocheting and kniting, and embroiddery in my comfortable TV-chair, I do paper crafting at my craft desk. Thus I put the supplies i need close to the lace whee I will perfrorm the craft.
Fantastic video! PILES - Thank you for addressing this!! In my life PILES BEGET MORE PILES. I make piles, if I don’t get to them shortly (the stuff in the pile is stuff I don’t want to do because it will take a while or too much work) I transfer them to a bin or a bag that can hold multiple piles of stuff I’m putting off When I notice that I have a few bins/bags (full of previous piles) I put all of them together in a corner (in my previous house I would put them in the guest room) so the rest of my house looks clean neat and organized (which it is) Unfortunately, I’ve now created a massive overwhelm pile…that I have even less of a desire to address.
Last spring I put close I wasn’t wearing in under bed boxes. I have taken out Three sweaters for the winter, but what’s left is going to be donated. Since I don’t like Goodwill I will donate to a no kill shelters resale shop.
Glad I watched the video. Learned that I’m not making mistakes with my organization methods. I am a firm believer that organization is about an individuals needs/want within their space. What might work for some, will not work for others.
One of the most important things I found that helps with decluttering is that when I buy something to replace an item that is either obsolete or doesn't work anymore, just get rid of the old item. Whether it's throwing it away, donating, or whatever, just get rid of the old item. And put the new item immediately to work. My kitchen is almost done and I have been throwing out old stuff. How many bowls does one person need, for instance. A lot of those old bowls are going into a box and getting donated. I have lots of old towels and they are going to the local animal shelter. The same with sheets and blankets I no longer need. That is helping a lot in keeping the clutter down and it really helps me to function better both mentally and physically. The stuff is gone and it makes my brain cells happy!
OMG... are you inside my apartment??? I just found you and I love it!!! I'M A FAN. I'm a pile maker and I need to work on change. I'M SO HAPPY I FOUND YOU
Great point about maintaining organization. As I go into any drawer or cabinet I look to see what is going on and reorganize as I go so that I never have a big mess. In my home, it’s usually the other people who put things away in the wrong places.
I discovered that the most important part of organizing is maintenance. Taking the extra few seconds to put something back is golden.
That is so true !!
This is the way I live as well. Being a (cozy) minimalist helps as well. So much easier to dust/vacuum/clean in general.
💯
I think you're right. That is where I fall down the most!
For me the idea of putting things away instantly doesn't work with my brain. But doing a 5-minute pick-up three times a day has the same effect and I find that far more manageable and less stressful.
I had to laugh about piles. My husband says I’m a “pilot”……”Pile it here, pile it there”. Thank you for such great content. You are a joy to watch.
LOL- “pilot”😆
In the UK, piles is a non medical term for haemorrhoids. 😂😂😂😂 sort out your piles! Ouch! 🤭
@lindalaw5466, Here in the US ,piles is a casual term for hemorrhoids, also.
@@temi4116
Never heard that before
@@temi4116I feel a little ignorant, I'm in the US but I've never heard this term! Just out of curiosity can I ask what general region?
LOL - loved your beat-up wall. Not internet pretty but the lunch boxes and back packs aren't in a pile on the floor and you know where to find somthing in them at 8 pm at night instead of searching the house for where the back pack might have been dropped. It is simple and convenient and no one has to think about it. That is really how organization should work
I suffer from "paralysis by analysis" and find it difficult to start something until I figure it all out.
Same way!!
You are a delight, Kallie! I am still trying to organize at 76, and you are a big help!
Me too - also 76 and trying to get organized
Think it’s the Swedish Death
When I tell you this wreaks havoc🤣
All of that is to say, what makes sense to us individually is totally valid, but we as humans sometimes take it for granted and forget that just because it makes sense to us doesn't mean it "makes sense." If that makes sense😅
Excellent advice! I have a huge problem with distraction.😵💫😁
Although it’s good exercise to keep walking around. 😅
@@cjhoward409This lol. I'm pregnant with twins and when it got too painful to spend all day running errands, puffing back and forth around the house cleaning was the only exercise I got! 😂
This is genius! I get so distracted all the time and constantly have to remind myself what I was doing
great idea
❤you are so blessed to have been raised that way ❤
@@margaretlake
You can still learn it!
It’s also your own interest!
Unless you want to rely always on someone else 🤷♀️
@@libbylandscape3560 I heard it first from Kallie and I'm shocked that it works.
Yes to those, and for me, making my bed, putting newspapers in recycling, and opening mail each day and paying whatever bills arrived.
How did it go? I have a room like this. I just don’t know where to start, so I never start
@@ChessieChess
I got in there and started.
I'll invest in that 😉
They do that now with receipts, they used to last for a long long time now receipts start to vanish over just a very short time.
For me a pile becomes a mountain when i know i have to do something with it, but i do not have the capacity 😢 to do something with it.
I know I’ve done a great job decluttering when my calves and feet feel very light! Congrats on the refresh!
Congratulations on your small progress with your closet !!!!! Mines next wish me luck !!!!! ❤
I lost my vision at 30 and now I'm 44 I am a full-time wife and mother and I take care of my house and cleaning and cooking and laundry every day😊
Wow! You put life into perspective for me. Though I don't know you, I'm really proud of you. You go girl!!
That’s my reminder.. you have to keep it up! Maintenance required.. it’s not a one and done situation!
💯
Me too !!!!
Being human is always ok!
Theres an other day tomorrow 🫶
You’re not the only one making those mistakes. I am too!
I am guilty of every single one of things you talked about. I think I may have some direction now! Thank you ❤
I love this.
You always make me think

I've been talking about "purging" my clutter for years now. Thank you for making this video - it was difficult to watch the entire thing, but I knew that I needed to hear it. Smaller tasks are definitely the way to go for me. I just have to go into a room with blinders on - looking at an entire room that needs a lot of work instantly triggers my "maybe tomorrow" response.
ME TOO oh my gosh I’m SO overwhelmed by it all
My stepson’s bedroom was so bad, that, even though I enjoy decluttering, it was a hoarder’s dream (mostly clothes he hasn’t worn in years), and, after 20 mins, I had to leave.
She promotes asking oneself " Where would I look to find this item?" Then, putting it there, and thinking of that place as the item's home spot
I realize that I have many things and many categories, and have grouped similar categories together
This has helped a lot.
"Just because your organisational structure falls apart does not mean you are disorganized."
Thank you so much for that encouragement!
🤦🏾♀️The way you called me out and laughed at my vertical piles🤣🤣🤣😭❤🙏🏾
The piling up is kind of a natural occurence in my daily life 🤦🏼♀️😅
I was just now recommending this channel to a friend & moments later an upload! Perfect timing!:)
I think piles are a great step on the sorting/decluttering journey, but not the destination. You can’t stay there.
I think you are correct on the maintenance. It’s also the hardest, IMO.
Great video!

Everything single thing was spot on 🙌🙌🙌🙌 I was nodding so hard like I was at church and the sermon was hittin my soul!
Thank you for being so real and honest. This is the GREAT advice!
So I am So Looking forward to decluttering the bedroom So I can just reset Easily ❤ Thank You
Thank you, I feel so much better about my bedroom, less guilt! I do need to come up with a system that helps me keep it better organized!
So darn true. Get rid of all the things that we don't use or have a purpose for it.
Less is more and easier to keep up with.
As an organizer, you have hit on very realistic things. I will save to share with my clients.
Good points! Especially about how it's not that I'm bad at organizing, it's that I didn't upkeep it. 'Upkeep' is the magic key!
Ugh! The pile thing! I've been working on that one for years.
Thank you for your videos sister! 🥳 Keeping a clean and organized house is the best.
Wise woman! Thanks for being real and allowing us to not have a perfectly clean, updated, trendy home. Do what works for you! 😊
Etc etc.
Learning to leave visual space. Surprisingly calming!
Group similar things! Truly believe this makes life very efficient
NAILED the "expectations" encompassing so many facets of our lives. Social media definitely has a giant impact on that. You just got a sub!
One thing I've learned in the past year is that if you put "the pile" into a basket or bin, it is no longer a pile. 😂 You still have to deal with it eventually, but it just LOOKS so much more tidy in the meantime.
I so know what you mean!!! 😊
I’ve heard of that for flat surface clutter. Like your end table or bathroom counter. Put bits that live there in a tray
I always feel better when I listen to you I'm pretty good at organizing and maintaining But motivation o I can't seem to get going
So true, setting the bar so high, just do it you and manageable.
I appreciate how real and relatable this video is. Great advice as always.
Love, love, love what you said about our thinking, maintaining and doing small tasks each day. Thank you!!
The only way to keep a home clutter free is
1. Have a place for everything
2. Have a process to put back everything into that place
3. Have separate time included in your everyday life/ routine to clean, put away, and keep tidy.
4. Have a weekly, by weekly, monthly time to do the bigger tasks
5. Share the jobs within your family evenly
6. Make it fun- it is not terrible if you’re enjoying it!
Good luck!
Take time yo sit down with the family to have suggestions for changes- as they all live there!!!
Also one of the biggest issue-
don’t let repairs get out of hands!!!
Only well kept homes can be nicely maintained!!!
I agree with all this but I think it’s easier said than done when you live alone AND don’t know how to do a lot of repairs AND struggle with mental health + hormonal changes/fatigue/insomnia

Believe me, I can honestly relate!
I learned these from my own miserable mistakes !!!😆😆😆
By the way, cleaning and organizing is a never ending process unless you have so little, that it’s not an issue
( because you are smart and minimalist!)
But then would you be reading this? 🤷♀️
@@funfan515 Hi, the thing most orginazing/cleaning/minimalist channels agree on, is not necessarily to have the hime clean and tidy all the time. You live there, thigs are going to get messy. The point of an organizenld home is, that it is easier and faster to clean up, when it gets messy.
...bi-weekly*... 😊😊😊
Thanks for the reminder about setting appropriate expectations for the life that we live and not for Instagram.
Just have to say thank you and I appreciate every day you commit to showing up for you, because that helps me show up for me. Hugs from Esquimalt
Ty again for another great video, awesome tips and organizational ideas. Love your videos!
I am working on decluttering and started picking a project instead of trying to do the whole room at one time. Still a work in progress
Fantastic video!
PILES - Thank you for addressing this!!
In my life PILES BEGET MORE PILES.
I make piles,
if I don’t get to them shortly (the stuff in the pile is stuff I don’t want to do because it will take a while or too much work) I transfer them to a bin or a bag that can hold multiple piles of stuff I’m putting off
When I notice that I have a few bins/bags (full of previous piles)
I put all of them together in a corner (in my previous house I would put them in the guest room) so the rest of my house looks clean neat and organized (which it is)
Unfortunately, I’ve now created a massive overwhelm pile…that I have even less of a desire to address.
Love #2! That is exactly what I need to do for my whole house. Thanks so much for the idea.
Thank you so much! I need constant reminders & nudges to keep working the process! Please keep reminding us through these great videos.
