Impressive resume Dave. I really enjoy your work. You're to the point without being too "technical" and you don't add stupid "comedy bits" in your reviews. I look forward to your reviews every week.
I'm afforded a full week with each vehicle I review so sometimes you'll get that "been there, done that look". I try to wash and vacuum each vehicle before the actually video shoot but sometimes it'll get dirty in the process. I appreciate the comments - Dave
@Evan, once you take the front wheels off and fold down the back row of seats, you can put two bikes in the back; it won't look pretty but you can do it - Dave
I'd love more power and torque like everyone else, but when I test drove the 2.5 CX-5 I was pretty amazed. It's more fun to drive than the 6 and has less road noise. Everyone who looks at this on paper and is only concerned about 0-60 or hp numbers is really missing out on a great commuter/family road tripper that can tackle the twisties. That said, it would be really nice if you could get manual on the 2.5 or something a bit quicker than the slushbox, the fake manual mode is pretty blah.
Just bought a '14 end of May. I traded on '10 Outlander. dorve home on Friday Saturday wen on errands and it would not start Mazda roadside towed back to dealer and they gave me Mazda5 to drive over weekend. I loved the Mazda6 On Monday even with help of Mazda tech suupport could not revive my original purchase Luckily they had a twin to my purchase and they had it ready when I got they after work Monday. No problems with it and I totally love it Great gas milage nice pep Bought GT all options
Great Review Dave. Thinking about one myself. I'll wait until the fall when the Diesel comes out to test drive one. 170hp and 310 ft lbs of torque and even better gas mileage! Win Win.
All you have to do is be completely honest with the sales people.Tell them you are strongly considering this car or the rav4 but the only reason you are having difficulty is because you have heard alot about the road noise and you want to take a longer test drive on the highway. They are their to help you just be honest and straight forward. Nut if it was my choice i would go with the mazda 2.5l
I average 29.5mpg with the 2.0L mtx version. I can get 37mpg on the highway if I do 60mph.. that deteriorates quickly as you go faster. The car is designed for driving in the city though, great mpg in city. The suspension is a bit hard and the seat comfort is average, not great. Just over 100k miles and I have clunks from the front suspension and transmission/axels make noise when first starting out from idle. The car started burning ton of oil and changing the pvc valve fixed that. Car looks good but lots of road noise and things feel a bit cheap (more road noise) compared to my old 2001 focus zts.
What year do you have? And do you recommend picking up a 2013-16 used? Thanks! I really like the car, but I’m still tempted to just go the safe route and get a Toyota Corolla
@@dexgray4581 I have a '14 and now just over 200k km. Toyota Corolla isn't even in the same tier, do you mean Rav4? I like the v6 Rav4s from like 2010 the new ones I wouldn't recommend the engine isn't that impressive and has issues of its own. The suspension was also not great. Try both though, the mazda just feels much better. Toyota feels more budget. But if you can get the v6 Rav4 that thing is great! Its well worth the sacrifice in looks and interior quality. You get 270hp in a small SUV.
@@radekw708 I only meant Toyota Corolla bc it’s an easy fall back even though it’s not a cross over SUV that I know and trust… it’s just me basically asking you, in your opinion, even though I love the look and feel of the Mazda CX-5, is the Corolla far more reliable and long lasting, that it’s no longer a good idea to go for the Mazda. Thanks for your experienced opinion and help!
@@radekw708 but if it came down between those two, now that you understand my sensibility between the cx5 and Corolla, what would say? Only asking bc I know the Corolla will last me 300k+ miles, but the cx5 has many appealing factors
gutless in a good way or bad. And in any car when you depress the accelerator petal passed 75% it turns of the a/c compressor until you let go and the car goes back to normal acceleration. But the fan should not cut off.
yes but that was 2000 and before. You should ask your mechanic on honda transmission or ask around. I would get the mazda because i like the styling and im a mazda fan.But what ever you pick you will be happy with.
Probably they had a good experience with the brand so they stick with the same brand coz its not they will change, just like they say why fix if its not broken,
what are you taking about. When it had the 2.0 best in class mpg. Up to the 2.5 and it has one of the highest mpg. The 2014 mazda6 has 38 mpg on the highway. Only the altima with a boring cvt get 38 and its EPA estimated so its true. Also since Mazda has left ford any website is placing Mazda among the top most reliability ratings.
Does anyone reading this, have a 5 or more year old CX-5 ? Have you had any problems with the transmission ? I'm getting a whining sound from mine. Surely a five year old CX-5 Sport Nav with SKYACTIV transmission with only 64,000 miles on the clock shouldn't be making this sound (?) Please tell me your experience.
I noticed your 70.3 hat, so Im sure you haul bikes around also, is the interior cargo size big enough to fit 2 bikes in along with gear? Now I am shorter than you at 5'7" so my bike size and seat height will be shorter.
I love how the cars in all of your reviews have that "been there done that" slightly used look. Do you guys have a jar of "show dirt" or is that all from every day use? :-D
Please,please,please...i m going to buy this one day after tomorrow,,,do the wind noise is too much inside...i take very short test drive and was unable to figure out...i am confused between this and rav4,,ll buy one of these on tuesday,,,i
But a little wider tires doesn't do too much for grip. Better tires do. And I think most buyers would care interior volume more than tire width for small SUVs@WilliamSantiago
RDX is almost $10k more expensive. Hardly a comparable product. Honda transmissions are above average, and I know people who got 250k before encountering problems. The CX-5 is more comparable to the Honda CR-V, which is a lot less fun to drive.
I can't emphasize this enough - Dave solo videos are 100x better than ones w/ Alex The Caddy, who has zero charisma, insults Dave in a not-funny way, and just has this Aryan jerk quality about him. Everyman driver is Dave Erickson. Dave is a star.

Cx5, cost and fuel economy alone, best part is its still fun to drive and has nice comfort features

Great little vehicle. We opted for the CR-V, but will go with the CX-5 when the diesel arrives.

I almost bought one, but I did not like the very narrow 225 tires. For the 19" wheels they should have been at least 235's if not 245's.
I appreciate that, thank you - Dave

How come this mazda cx5 is not selling well despite good reviews?
people tend to stick to the same manufacturer regardless of information

Turbo went on my CX-5 on a 64 plate SE-L Nav (January 2014) when JUST outta warranty. Mazda honoured the repair though.
how is the interior noise on the highway?
Which would the top five 4x4 , fuel economy be, by your standards?

Great review, Dave!
Best crossover SUV out there
i would pick the rdx but all honda products have transmission problems at 100k so sell it before that or be prepared to fix it.
Good review on a good cross over
@kssnyder2, From your mouth to Motor Week's ear :-) Thank you for the vote of confidence. By the way, are they accepting applications? :-) - Dave
I know this was last year, but if you remember: I've heard the transmission on these is not very good. What do you think?

Which do you think is better
Mazda cx 5 or Honda CR-V

It means he's like 5'9

Dave can't, John Davis hasn't aged a day in 20 years.
Dave is practicing to take over Motor Week
Nice one!
Gutless in a bad way. I was giving about 1/3 of its power and the Ac cut out.
Maybe*

150 Hp in base model for this type of vehicle seems very low.
it is
Skyactiv engine- good. Bigger more powerful Skyativ- better.
agreed !
I'll wait for the diesel, that should be worth the wait.
You weren't waiting
Amazing
Superman is hidden in almost all the videos. :-) Keep your eye out in the future. It's pretty cool to not take things too seriously.
But here's a question that we've all been waiting for: should we wait for the 2.2L Diesel?
Lmfao poorly aged comment

@Leyawiin84, Maybe you can start a petition :-)
4 cylinder for a suv? no thanks - engine sounds like an old movie projector - 2:35
That's the direct injection. They all sound like that.
