Sometimes entry level isn’t the cheapest option. I’ve got a new Audi TT and in reality it actually cost less than the new A1 with the deposit contribution they offered. The A1 is a stunning car but it’s worth checking out more expensive models first to see what the finance packages work out at. They may cost more but the gfv is higher and deposit contributions can be far larger so the actual amount you finance can be less. The irony that I’m going to struggle to pay less than I do now for a car further down the range. Worth noting :)
@@ariqnabil8063 I know the starting price. I meant in reference to this particularly car. Even though it's fully specced, £30k for a supermini is ridiculous. Especially when the A4 starts from just under £29k
That always makes me chuckle. “Let’s make the dash super soft to touch, but we’ll leave the doors hard and uncomfortable. No one rests their arms on the doors anymore.” Hands up how many people actually spend their spare time fondling their dash? Hmmmmmm?🧐
@Reece Collison I think you could easily just make an interesting design out of the plastic. So many dashes are just solid slabs of boring plastic. I love it when they add some flair
Despite the hideous styling, fake vents and bloated size, the thing that bothers me most is Audi's new badging system. Why oh why is there a "30 TFSI" badge on a 1 litre turbo, it's not a 3.0 turbo it makes 0 sense. Heck if it referred to the car having 130bhp it wouldn't even bother me that much, it's just such a meaningless number.
It is just as meaningless as the systems mercedes and bmw use. What the heck does 220d say? 220hp? No. 2.2l? No. And now bmw: 330i: 330hp? No. 3l engine? Not either. You see? Other than that i think this car looks really good. Without a doubt the best looking car in its class and you can clearly see its adressed to younger drivers
@@gerritsteiner8273 I completely disagree with how BMW have butchered their naming convention too. It used to make sense, my old 325ci was a 3 series with a 2.5L engine and that's how it should have stayed imo. The old A1 was far from perfect, but as an overall package made a lot more sense.
I seriously dont understand these types of cars. A car is meant to be transportation. Youd think manufactures would learn how to make food passenger space in a passenger vehicle. Plus I dont understand anything below a compact vehicle. Things get to small to be practical at all. I just parked next to a first gen beetle today in my 4runner and wa baffled how that was one of the best selling cars of all time. @@aribuwu Fantastic! Absolutely love the car, but will be upgrading to an S3 or similar at the end of the year. I have the A1 sport 30TFSI Manual, and it’s been a really lovely first car. Insurance on my first year at 17 wasn’t bad either (£724 with no black box, and I live in London so was expecting to pay much more). The car is a lot of fun to drive (especially in sport mode - dynamic as Audi calls it). But, I think it’s time for an upgrade soon as I want something a little faster, and with some upgrades that I couldn’t get on the A1. Overall, highly recommend it (especially the manual as the gearbox is great). Haven’t had any major issues with the car, just a few minor things like an issue with the tire pressure indicators, and I had to have the MMI replaced as CarPlay stopped working.
I miss the older Audi interiors with the swivel wheel controls in front of the gear selector and the infotainment screen that sits on top of the dash ☹️ these latest ones feel like a dollied up VW interior. That you pay triple for.
The Mini arguably does the job better as premium hatch even if's not particularly practical. From the get go it just has a lot of character whereas the A1 while nice doesn't really stand out and there's little to justify it over paying the same for a better equipped Polo. The Mini is the kind of thing that can at least be affordable provided people don't go nuts with the equipment; in a lot of cases you won't miss some of the extras anyway. Most would be happy enough with DAB radio, Air Con and Bluetooth. There's a lot of equipment cars have that people won't ever use.
What most of you don't realize is that this specific car is fully loaded for 30k. You can easily get this car for 20k with all the things that you need.
I am sorry Audi but that's just not working. You get way more for your money in every other small car from any other brand, even if the quality may not be as good as the Audis (Yet still plastics all round the car which usually causes the main reason for criticism with any other brand) I mean this is still the small car segment where people don't wanna spend loads of money, they just want a good looking practical city-car for everyday use and not pay a fortune. Absolutely way too expensive for a small car or any car this size. For 30k you get the next bigger car from any other brand with almost the same equipment. But I think thats just the badge people are paying for whatever reason.
It might be Audi's response to the Mini, but what works for that car is the value it gives, you get so much compared to this overpriced box that sadly will still be sold.
I just can’t see it selling to people with a healthy budget because the competition in luxury hatchbacks is fierce anyway but when you can buy a low mileage and 6-12 month old TT or a Jaguar XE and the list goes on. It makes people rethink
@@wheresthelambsauce8705 An A3 is expensive for it's class and not really offering that much more nowadays compared to Asian manufacturers. You pay the difference because it's a *premium brand* .
Need to read up on their cars more. Because you can have the map display in the instrument cluster. When you are using Android Auto, you have to experiment. And that's in either the SEAT Skoda VW or Audi.
There are a lot of people posting negative comments about this car, mainly because of the price. It's important to remember that the one reviewed is very highly spec'd (tech pack £1,650, comfort pack £1k etc). I am looking at buying the 2 litre model (with a fair number of extras) and list price is 27k (on Carwow!). If you wanted to, you could spend £18k on this car.
I have the 2019 S-Line model with the New 19 reg. It's the 2 litre, 200bhp, 40tfsi version and I have to say it's a bit of a pocket rocket. The clunky gear shifts at lower speeds are a bit of a nuisance but the sport dynamic mode will give you a gainly boost when you feel like flying. Plus, it was a mere 22K with all comfort pack but excluding the satnav. Pretty decent in the end, and looks like a mean-bean from the front, obviously ignoring the overdone plastics.
You are basically paying for them to enable software built into the car, I know a guy who is good with computers and he was tinkering with an Audi and discovered some of the things you pay extra for can be enabled if its a software based thing.
@@gravemind6536 of course, because it cuts down costs. While other manufacturers use that opportunity to give the customer more features for less money, audi locks them away and let's you pay extra for it. It is kinda sad really, especially people out there still trying to justify the price.
Cars in UK are dead cheap. In the NL it starts FROM 26K euro something like this would easily go over 35 maybe even hit 40 grand. I REALLY like this car, but the price is too much in NL. I'll wait for the Mazda 3.
@iTz_Simo-_- I actually like Audi. It is probably my favorite brand at the moment (it wasn't even close a few years ago) But It is too damn expensive. I expected this to start from around 20-22 thousand Euros but 26 is just ridiculous.
@iTz_Simo-_- Ah that can happen. Sad to hear. I currently got a 2016 VW Polo (facelift). Works really well and smooth. Not perfect but definitely good for a supermini. Drives even better than the 2016 Toyota Auris, that I had for a short while (Got some short time lease contracts). So first impressions of VW group are quite positive. That is why this Audi was so interesting. From 2019 I can finally get some long term lease contracts. So i will probably go for the new Mazda 3 hatch. What problems do you have with your A1? Honda Ckvic is a solid choice.
audi is the luxury brand of vw. not sure why everyone is complaining about the price. its simple: with the audi you pay a little extra for the brand and overall luxury feel and look of the car.
I have to say, above the premium badge of it being an Audi, I personally would think a golf or polo would be better value. Optional extras that others include as standard puzzle me on this car. Think I'd prefer a higher end Polo maybe. Convince me otherwise maybe 😗
@@jigrodrigues There is no advantage, they are both overpriced. Just an example since the Mini is "equally premium" and you spend way less money on one.
I know I am young and that I almost grew up with smart phones but who still uses in car built sat navs anymore. Your phone is infinitely better thanks to constant updates and well tech company's being better at software.
I had an old shape A1 on hire a few months ago in 1.4 TFSi S line sportback spec. Looks wise, quite smart inside and out. But it did have a few flaws. Strange vague steering feel around the dead ahead position. A somewhat clunky gearbox. But the worst point for me was the engine noise. One of the most raucous powerplants I've come across. I trust these issues have been addressed with this new version. Ironically they seemed to have ruined one of the old cars plus points - the neat looks. The A1 also continues to be a very overpriced car for what it is. Its simply not worth the money.
The A1 that I tried was alright but certainly not worth the money didn't feel or drive like an Audi roof was too low at the back for passengers over 5ft 10. Might as well get the Polo instead since it is actually more practical and drives the same.

That ambient lighting is a cool feature, too.
£30K for a supermini?!
Its start 18k dude are u blind?
@@ariqnabil8063 I know the starting price. I meant in reference to this particularly car. Even though it's fully specced, £30k for a supermini is ridiculous. Especially when the A4 starts from just under £29k
and 115hp
@mipmipmipmipmip lol, they know people with more money then sence will just pay for them because it has an AUDI badge on it.
@@ariqnabil8063 Still way too much for car without armrest and 3 cilinder engine
That always makes me chuckle. “Let’s make the dash super soft to touch, but we’ll leave the doors hard and uncomfortable. No one rests their arms on the doors anymore.” Hands up how many people actually spend their spare time fondling their dash? Hmmmmmm?🧐
Think it’s because the dash is always where you’re looking, those soft touch materials do look better too and makes the car look more premium.
The dash needs to be in better quality than the door, for safety reasons in case of a frontal accident
True, I think that this new system is a total shit
LMAO exactly I saw "30 TFSI" on the back and assumed it had at least 200bhp
I agree 100% ,totally pointless.
I'm a young driver and I can tell you for a fact that most younger drivers, even in good professions like mine, can't and won't want to spend £30k on a slow supermini. The old A1 was far from perfect, but as an overall package made a lot more sense.
Sat in the back with two other adults in my sister's previous gen A1 yesterday, safe to say it was my worst experience in a car EVER
Toyota Argo.... It’s really a 2 seater with +2 in the back. No headroom or legroom at all.
It is so tiny and looks so uncomfortable and too small to be a family car.
@@baronvonjo1929
Because we do need smaller cars. Its easier, cheaper and more economical to drive. And i never have people riding with me. I always drive alone. So i dont care about the backseats and boot.
This car is poor value - way too small and overpriced
Mini costs the same and is much worse. It is the best small premium on the market.
it's not overpriced you idiot... For the best car in the class with wolrd class tech you have to pay a lot. If you poor busterd just buy Polo or Fabia.
@@TheEryk03 Idiots are those who buy "premium" cars and believe they get value for their money. This is probably the most stupid car one could buy? It even looks old and cheap and most certainly comes with the crap VW Group quality.
@@Sherukka you know shit about cars. A1 is the best premium small car. Deal with it haters.
@@TheEryk03 I've owned both an Audi 1 and VW Polo, so can only talk about personal experience. The Audi 1 is far too compact, and you're paying for the brand. I prefer the Polo which is much better value. Hopefully you'll educate yourself more in future than go by fancy pics and clips ;)
Love Mat's sense of fashion and style. Burberry looks so immaculate on you.
Can’t wait to pass my test and hopefully buy this car
I seriously don't know what I'm gonna do without carwow 😁..
You can get a specced up Polo GTI for under £23K! dread to think how much the 2.0 litre version of the A1 will be.
Which is a pity, because that RS1 could be a nice little fun car. While the prices aren't released yet, one thing's certain - it's Audi. Naturally it'll be overpriced.

So glad the buyout on my 2015 A1 is £3k. Buying that and selling comfortably. Knew it would still hold value
Just bought mine so excited for it to come on hopefully Monday 🤩🤩
How’s it after 2 years?
This car might be overpriced, but I still love it
I love the screen and controls angled towards the driver. I don't understand why that's not a more common feature.
In norway, this 1 liter, 3 sylinder car costs 41 000£. That’s madness...
That's socialism for ya.
I'm 5'6 and gave this car a test drive. Im a pretty small frame dude and have to say. It felt super nice to drive.. I might just get one
It's funny that a lot of the features mentioned in this review are the same features I have on my current A1.
There's a lot of equipment cars have that people won't ever use.
yeah but you would have to drive a mini
What most of you don't realize is that this specific car is fully loaded for 30k. You can easily get this car for 20k with all the things that you need.
Are the window wipers optional?! 😀
I am sorry Audi but that's just not working. You get way more for your money in every other small car from any other brand, even if the quality may not be as good as the Audis (Yet still plastics all round the car which usually causes the main reason for criticism with any other brand)
I mean this is still the small car segment where people don't wanna spend loads of money, they just want a good looking practical city-car for everyday use and not pay a fortune. Absolutely way too expensive for a small car or any car this size. For 30k you get the next bigger car from any other brand with almost the same equipment.
But I think thats just the badge people are paying for whatever reason.
Lenkrad you can get an A3 for this kind of money, the a1 has never been excellent but this one is a let down
Exactly. I think Audi forgot that the A1 is in the same class as the Fiesta, Fabia and Polo.
6:48 thanks for the demonstration of a tall man banging his head of a door mate 😂😂
very disappointing cabin appointment for the price
Quality, ambience, attention to detail
It's not bad, but for 30k?
30k for cloth seats
Audi has outdone themselves again! The new design language is brilliant. Exciting times ahead for Audi for sure...
I love how in detail this is. U da man!
Need to read up on their cars more. Because you can have the map display in the instrument cluster. When you are using Android Auto, you have to experiment.
And that's in either the SEAT Skoda VW or Audi.
Omg Matt pulled a red one out of the polos, does he know how lucky he is to get a red one. 😂😂
The interior looks so much like a VW and ridiculously priced.
Mat looks smart in the glasse!!
It's an illusion though
...and in the nice Burberry jacket ;)

£150 to change the ambient lighting colours 😲
You are basically paying for them to enable software built into the car, I know a guy who is good with computers and he was tinkering with an Audi and discovered some of the things you pay extra for can be enabled if its a software based thing.
@@gravemind6536 of course, because it cuts down costs. While other manufacturers use that opportunity to give the customer more features for less money, audi locks them away and let's you pay extra for it. It is kinda sad really, especially people out there still trying to justify the price.

Everything about this review is so British I love it
Cars in UK are dead cheap.
It Starts at 21k in Germany so just make a trip to Germany and buy there

audi is the luxury brand of vw. not sure why everyone is complaining about the price. its simple: with the audi you pay a little extra for the brand and overall luxury feel and look of the car.
I have to say, above the premium badge of it being an Audi, I personally would think a golf or polo would be better value. Optional extras that others include as standard puzzle me on this car. Think I'd prefer a higher end Polo maybe.
Convince me otherwise maybe 😗
30K for this washing machine?! Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but could you not buy a new MINI Hatch JCW for that?

@@jigrodrigues There is no advantage, they are both overpriced. Just an example since the Mini is "equally premium" and you spend way less money on one.
