Danny should take advantage of this by playing d5, immediately threatening to win a piece and taking advantage of Arin's cluttered setup, but he instead goes wrong with... 5. ...d6 ...which is not a catastrophic blunder, but it is a bit too slow. 6. f4 Another error. This was Arin's chance to finish the trade of pawns and unpin his queen, but be instead wastes another move pushing his pawn on the edge of the board. Danny should play Nh5 here, defending the pawn that he's up by, but worried about Arin's a-pawn, he goes... 9. ...b6 ...giving Arin another chance. Rg5 Dan takes the hanging rook and the game is effectively over. Overall, Arin is still improving. If he has a game where he's good about seeing undefended pieces and considering what Dan's trying to do, he can absolutely win. We're all rooting for you, buddy!
Arin's biggest problem is that he's always terrified of doing a bad move and expects every move he makes to be bad, so he falls into a spiral of decision paralysis followed by panicky moves. Also ADHD making it difficult to let a silence stand.
I would love to see Dan and Arin just play chess on camera with a real board. With game grump themed pieces in pink and blue. Just see arins constant frustration on camera. That would be so fun!

Arin eternally losing in chess is a testament to his patience... or lack thereof. He's the video game boy, not the chess boy. He's not the one who checkmates
Was there any reason Sitar music was playing and not the music from the game? Are some classical songs now not covered by copyright? They’ve had it in previous games and even mention “Ave Maria” during the game
Was gonna say, I’m not upset or anything, but I feel like part of the charm is Arin raging over the music lmao. It’s an interesting choice to change it without mention when they reference the music directly in the video
I do remember that, it was during Dan's playthrough of Getting Over It. I remember laughing so hard because he DOESN'T do that, he does the opposite of that all the time 😂
If this chess match was an actual historic battle, Arin’s king would be an absolute legend. The man fought to the last. He basically fought an entire enemy kingdom to a stalemate by himself

Man, Arin not taking that pawn at 13:40 for several turns just killed me. That being said, Dan is not invincible by any means. I think his most vulnarable point is that he doesn't develop on board enough. Most of his heavy hitters just chill in the back, applying 0 pressure. If Arin can play with 100% of his concentration (which is hard for him, I know), and don't make blunders - he can win EDIT: Oh, and the end result of this is just perfect. Right after he said the thing
For all the different chess games they've played, it's always regular chess. I wonder how they'd fare at versions like 3 way chess, hexagon chess or 4d chess with multi dimensional time travel or whatever its called
For anyone wondering about where the 'Peter what is this?' clip is from, it's "Is this Dan's favorite new game | America's Next Top Model [3]". Time stamp 40:50. Enjoy!
Arin's officially reached the stage of chess player where he's trying to eat the pieces while Dan isn't looking, only Dan's still sitting there watching him.
12:40 Ok, seriously, I'm hypnotized by the bit of singing Dan does here (before it turns into the usual hilarious Game Grumps singing nonsense). As an enthusiast of historical music (such as Bardcore) and foreign music (also Bardcore, but when it's sung in older variants of languages), this sounds so lovely and I can imagine like, a gentle song with how gentle Danny boy was singing.
Dracula really is a good book! I like the way it's told more than anything really. Journal entries, newspaper articles, correspondence between characters; it's super cool! Same reason I really like World War Z by Max Brooks.
The moment Arin goes for the rabid King route, I can just imagine an animation where King Dan watches as a naked gremlin Arin with a crown goes for a shanking spree on his pawns and tried to go for his rook. Then Arin's bishop holds up two guns against the two pawns about to try to get to the edge for a promotion until it got eaten by the other rook. Dan is like, "There's only one now! Wtf are you all doing?!" And Arin is trying to stab him but there is a barrier preventing him for coming closer so he goes to try shanking another nearby pawn. Then when he got two Queens, Arin was all like: "Yes. Step on me, Queens." and they were like, "Hmm. How about no?" so they pushed for a Stalemate.

Good, weirdass castle-less game. Next year, I suggest the recently released Checkmate Showdown. It's chess, but every capture between pieces is a 2D fighting game match! With factors like initiating, forks and reinforcement adding powerups on the relevant side. Because pawns just capture without a match, they are in some ways infinitely powerful. It's really interesting and strange, you can have pieces that you're good or bad at capturing with, and I think it would tip the balance some way back toward Arin.
Before I started, I predicted that Arin would start psyching himself out within 5 minutes. And sure enough, at 4:34 and only 3 moves in, Arin started the process of spiraling into despair.

You guys should really do a cross-over with Daniel Naroditsky. He's on UA-cam, is a GM, and has experience teaching newbies. It would be interesting to see if he could train Aaron up enough to beat Dan within a given time-frame.
@@UltraMaXAtAXX Honestly whoever, I just picked Naroditsky because I think he's pretty good teacher based off his videos. But Levy or Cramling would be cool, too. Definitely feel like Levy would play up to their style of content more than Naroditsky lol
I love the juxtaposition of them trying to figure out the last time they played chess as they move in the menus passed the recordings of the last four games they played, which proudly proclaim they were (mostly) on 4/5/2021.
I think I’ve found a way to even the odds for Arin here - Chess Boxing. You play chess for a certain amount of time. One that time expires, you begin a one minute round of boxing. When the round ends, you return to chess.
I feel like Arin is one more game away from having a really good game of chess, you know? Like, a real slugfest game that has moments of lengthy decision-making followed by rapid, back-and-forth moves by both Arin and Dan until Arin eventually *shatters his own mental* in _the final moves_ of the game. I can't wait for Arin to think he's gonna win, accidentally hand Dan the coup de grace, then shit an entire gorilla. He's just a few games away guys, don't worry, he'll get there.
Arin threatening Dan's king with a great knight move and then completely abandoning it to die really gives a good idea of how quickly he forgets about anything crossing his mind

I'd kill to see the Grumps attempt 5D Chess with Multiversal Time Travel. I think it'd finally put them on the same level since neither one would have any clue what the fuck was going on
You guys should really do a cross-over with Daniel Naroditsky. He's on UA-cam, is a GM, and has experience teaching newbies. It would be interesting to see if he could train Aaron up enough to beat Dan within a given time-frame.
Levy would milk Arin for memes. Maybe Anna Cramling too?
@@UltraMaXAtAXX Honestly whoever, I just picked Naroditsky because I think he's pretty good teacher based off his videos. But Levy or Cramling would be cool, too. Definitely feel like Levy would play up to their style of content more than Naroditsky lol
there’s something so peaceful about doing work while listening to Arin losing his own peace over chess with Dan
"It has given us opportunity to cry 'check' in some ways in this chess game,
which we play for the stake of human souls." -Dracula, by Bram Stoker
wow i commented "I wish they play more chess" just last week. they do listen
"Peter, what is this?" killed me for some reason
Always in for a good time when these two kings play chess
"I can see your brain thinking in your mind" has the same energy as "at age 6 I was born without a face"
16:45 Bionicle Sex Lore is one of the best usernames I’ve ever seen
18:54 "oh, he's going to take dans unguarded pawn"
>stops halfway there, unprotected
"dan's going to win this one is't he."
This is easily the funniest episode I’ve seen in a while
That intro gives me "Bienvenue, powerbottoms!" vibes and I am all for it XD
I was going to be mad at Arin for publicly making fun of his fans, but watching him flounder in chess made me feel better.
I literally just learned that chess boxing is a legit thing like 2 days ago. This would be a great 10MPH episode.
I fully expect and pray that in whatever game they play theres a weird line of dialog and either go "Peter what is this?"
Did they get copyright strikes for Ave Maria? Because this Sitar music fading in and out while they talk about Ave Maria is super distracting.
Arin threatening Dan's king with a great knight move and then completely abandoning it to die really gives a good idea of how quickly he forgets about anything crossing his mind
that sitar in the back going hard
"Peter, what is this?" was my FAVORITE bit from that series, I'm so glad Dan rewatched it 😂😂
I love that Arin's Jimmies immediately get rustled when he loses pieces.
Anyone else having the occasional moment where the background music gives off a vibe of Muriel Bagge (R.I.P. Thea White) playing her sitar?
Why are we hearing different music? Was there a licensing dealio with Ave Maria and other songs in Chess Ultra?
Arin: why do I keep losing?
Also Arin: (describes all the moves and ways that Dan could beat him in that moment)
