I got a second bike which takes mudguards and a rack , that way I can have small panniers and take extra kit or stow layers I have taken off . I'm lucky in that being retired , I can pick my days , I think that there is no need to stop riding or use indoor kit , just accept that rides may be fewer and shorter .
That was a really enjoyable day out; as ever, I’m grateful for Charles’s patience with me as I learn to be a better tandem pilot. Turning to winter tips, in my early days cycling I made the mistake of wearing thick socks to try and keep my feet warm; however, all that did was make the shoes too tight which constrain the blood flow and my feet were still cold. Last season though, I discovered knee length merino wool ski socks which work really well (especially when combined with an overshoe).

Almost in total agreement Roy, although as someone who nearly always rides solo, I motivate myself with the thought of being as miserable as the weather outside if I don't get my cycling fix. I draw the line at icy roads though, either by avoiding the higher risk back roads or by avoiding the bike altogether, I don't consider the risk of injury worthwhile.
@@rogerbodger I learned not to ride in icy conditions the hard way, Roger, although it took three falls to get through. You are clearly highly self motivated with the daily long commutes you do, and then you ride for pleasure at weekends! Like you, I get grumpy if I don’t get out for a few days.
@RideWithRoy sometimes the hard way is the only way to learn 😄, in my case coming off on black ice, turning back for home only to find more black ice a few minutes later, luckily no injuries other than a bit of a knock to my confidence
Roy , the problem we have as cyclists and it is all over the country, motorists actually believe that they have the right of way on the roads and too self important to any road users always in a rush to get where they are going ,ive even seen them using mobile phones while driving . In all honesty, there isn't enough police to tackle this problem and your last comment about your neighbour speaks volumes of self important drivers . Kind regards Dave S.
Agreed, and that’s why I report bad driving with video evidence. Two of my local forces are very good but Nottinghamshire fails miserably. If more of us report then the word will get around not to mess with cyclists!

We are a long way from you, Kevin, based in Grantham, Lincolnshire. This part of the county has the rolling hills of the Vale of Belvior, just across the border in Leicestershire, so makes for some beautiful cycling. Nothing to disagree with there. It's always nice to have a destination and build in a coffee break. The day I fitted mudguards was a real turning point to winter rides. Still don't like the cold or rain much but at least my rear end stays dry.
What tips can you add help with cycling all through winter and where do you draw the line?
