Just Imagine, It's 1998, you're in front of an old CRT computer that has been recently upgraded, you coudln't find a copy of Quake II because they sold out at your local store but instead you got something called "Unreal" and your friends had been talking about how good the game was so you decided to give it a chance, you waited a couple of hours for the game to finally install and then you start it, the intro is promising, an overview of an ancient castle, you start the game, you're inside of some prison, after what seems like an eternity you escape and then... Your mind is blown forever...
So, I'm gonna be speaking with zero nostalgia bias here, as a 15 year old playing this game for the first time only a few days ago... I am just. Blown away. I had actually bought this game because of how much I liked the first Unreal Tournament... and I am so glad I did. Even after growing up on games like Halo: Reach and DOOM 2016... this game from 1998 just managed to blow my mind. In the beginning, I didn't think it was going to be much. Just boring, slow trudges through some random ship. Then when I walked out, and this music started up... I knew this game was going to be something special. I can't imagine how amazing this was back in 1998... what a great game this is.
This track still blows me away. What an amazing fucking introduction to a new world full of adventure, wonder, mystery and danger. It's like stepping out of the crashed UNSC pod from Halo CE, to step foot on Halo for the first time and see the ring rise up through the sky and come full circle behind you. Very few games make me feel like this anymore. These utter jaw dropping moments that make you feel immersed in a new realm of possibilities, completely taken out of you chair, you forget you're staring at a screen. It's a window into another life. I'm not sure what it is, probably a big part of nostalgia bias.
To be honest, this was one of the best games I've ever played, and to the surprise that this game was created in 1998, even I didn't believe it, but at the same time it has the best soundtrack that is very creative for different scenarios. . But it is a pity that it is not so popular for this generation. I think that in this century we need more games like UNREAL.
Never forget leaving that creepy space ship, and coming out to this beautiful landscape like, truly surreal game ahead of it's time. And what a soundtrack
Couldn’t be a more perfect track for the moment you walk out of that ship into a beautiful unknown and Unreal alien world. I’m glad I was privileged enough to experience it. Just perfect
I still remember how this blew me away the first time. The timing of it and use of this track for that part of the game. It was all so masterfully executed and the atmosphere just pulled you in right from the start. That was the undisputed golden age of FPS PC gaming and I'm glad I grew up with it.
One of the best soundtracks of all time. The soundtrack nails that sense of mystery and wonder Unreal had. Let’s hope Nightdive will remaster this game in the future !
I’m only 18 and hadn’t played the game till very recently but stepping out onto the planet I forgot the name of already and hearing this was an amazing experience I’m hoping Nightdive can remaster Unreal someday
@@jaeded3921 that is ironically the reason why must people played Half Life instead of this game. Half Life ran on a potato. Unreal required you to have a very nice rig in 98 to play it 30+ FPS. So it kind of flew a bit under the radar back then. But all the people who played it remember it fondly.
@@EpicShitForYouAnd now its a hidden gem that many wont know about.. Epic really should be ashamed of themselves, delisting Unreal from stores was truly evil of them.
@@jaeded3921 a decision nobody understands. No idea how they thought that was a good idea. But it is their IP so they can do with it what they want. It feels like they want to bury the past and therefore Unreal at this point unfortunately.
First step out of the Vortex Rikers. See the hopping strange bunny and look at the horizon. Walk to the little house near the small lake. Yes, you're in. Wow, look at the waterfall and the crashed starship.
Hi guys, if you’re looking for original music in the style of classic Alexander Brandon, check out my track Exotic Adventure - martinemes.bandcamp.com/album/instrumental-collection
You never know what might happen to the gaming industrie ;-). By the way, there are lots of mods for unreal 1. So if you want another unreal game you can just go download one of those mods on oldunreal.com.
I do understand the feeling ... that being said however, and to also add to the video poster comment (thanks by the way man! truly epic! ;- ) ) ... we already did have a few very good surprise on the front of creativity in the gaming industry. And that includes soundtrack, some exemple that seems fitting to me are : ua-cam.com/video/wMDw_3wJEcE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/1-TqhLywR8s/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/jDSydWq6SN0/v-deo.html ... or anything from Darkest Dungeon really ;) I understand the feeling, and it's true we are drowned in a metric ton of crap these days .... but it seems to me more due to an overproduction problem and excess focus on profit than a true and complete lack of creativity as a whole .... personal opinion of course :)
If only it was legal to imprison people who disliked classic games made during the Golden Age. If you're some zoomer piece of shit who hates Unreal, you should be locked up and forced to beat it on the hardest difficulty without cheats. Good taste will be forced into your head, or you will stay out of my industry forever.

The music gameplay and the atmosphere is what made this game so special.
I got it bundled with my brand spankin new voodoo 3. That was an experience.
Heh, I have recently found an original Unreal CD
Ablosutly
Magic, just magic. Yes, nostalgia but my god this was groundbreaking at the time, the music, the atmosphere, depth etc..
yes
At the time.... thank god music/atmosphere is timeless.
My favorite track. The minute you leave the ship at the start of the game... My mouth would just drop
+samuel desbiens (views scenery then whistles)
+samuel desbiens I had the same reaction
samuel desbiens same the music and the visuals of the world match up very well.
Don't forget those tentacle monsters on the ceilings who yell a mumbled "AURGH!"
I will never forget that moment
The sense of dread and mystery that starts at 1:31... Give me back the times when the gaming industry was about creativity.

The action part of this track is... *unreal*!
the first time i exited the Rikers and saw the open world with this music...my jaw hit the floor.
the jump from 2d to 3d gaming was so... impressive, thats why is so shiny
The most powerful game experience i have ever had. It was unreal.
enter into a memorable alternate reality everytime i remember this song and game

I hope that epic makes a full-blown remake of unreal with the original team
Sadly highly unlikely..but there is actually even like two fan projects to remake this??
the original team likely has better things to do with their time these days.. why don't you make a game instead?
Someone has already remade Unreal 1 for UT04
