Beautiful! As a teacher of 27 years experience let me say you are fantastic at explaining clearly and in a logical order. That’s so important for a newbie! Thank you Karen. All the best. Susan Taja
I love your video about warm sunset,it was very helpful! And I always stay to the end of the video. Painting is like kids, the infant stage, the messy teenage years and then maturity.
I can't imagine anyone not watching until the end. I have no problem painting to the ugly stage. I want to know what to do after that to pop the colors and work the magic! I gain so much from watching you. You explain things well. Mahalo!
This is stunning! I love the looseness and yet the tiny areas of detail. I have never painted with soft pastels and I’ve not been able to achieve this with oil paint. You’ve really inspired me to give this medium a try starting with the clear gesso and warm underpainting. Thank you!
I’ve been researching a little more and I’m wondering if there is any way whatsoever to create on a rigid (say birch) panel and preserve it in a way that it can be hung without needing to be behind glass. Thank you in advance for your time.
This time I couldn't wait for the end result. Wow! Especially the purple you added on the trees. And yes, please i'd like to see the art graph demo. Gràcies.
Karen you are such an excellent teacher. Love the underpainting technique. Also you comments on how a textured surface can keep us/ the painting from becoming overly tight. I also love how you embrace the fluidity of the underpainting and let that inspire you. Great reminders that the photos are just a reference or launching point for a painting, and not to try and reproduce a photo.
Thanks for reminding us of the "ugly stage and to stick with it". That has helped me so many times! Yes, another lesson about the underlining with the art graf! Beautiful painting!!!
I would love demos on both the art graf and how to change the picture to cool tones. Lastly, I appreciate you saying which sets of pastels you are using, but I wonder if at the start of the video you could show us the handful of individual colors you will be using in the painting? I like to paint along with you as practice at moving along more quickly and as a beginner it would be easier to pick out my little collection before starting rather than try to grab them with you as we go. Thank you for your wonderful and generous instructions and envouragement ♥️
Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate you watching! Sometimes I choose my pastels in advance and sometimes I don't. When I do I will be sure to remember to show them! I do show my pastels for many of my demos over in my Patreon group. We have monthly paint alongs which you might enjoy!
@Susan I find the clear gesso chews up the pastel too much and it doesn’t take many layers either. Maybe I need to embrace the texture like Karen says…
Thanks for sharing. You are right about the tendency to take your work too far. I’ve seen a few other tutorials of yours where I thought the piece was perfect and then you kept going! We’re always learning!
Thank you for your UA-cam videos. I have looked a short time ago to the end of this video and impressed with your purples and orange. I would love to see art graph demo and detail of brand etc. I would love to join Patriot but don’t have time due to work etc but when I retire I would be considering you as my option - in the meantime I will continue with your UA-cam videos. Happy painting. Elenor in Australia.
I don't if it helps, but I heard that youtube only tells you play time, and not where in the vid we're watching. I watch your whole vids, but in parts. I tend to keep you or Stuart Davies on in the background. I find your voices comforting and sometimes I learn cool stuff and see lovely art come through too, but it also means that I might pause a video and come back to it later. I know on his channel a lot of us do that and it's really messed with his analytics too. So please keep trucking on and I'm sorry I'm messing up your stats.
I really love your way to add the marks and texture by applying gesso. I tried that and love the effect too. Wonder will you use gesso on Uart? Maybe not necessary? But Gesso on watercolor or this kind of paper is very stylish. Beautiful painting. Thank you for sharing
Oh, what a fantastic tutorial! 🎨 To watch you paint, is like magic though....🙏 Sooo good, and still so educational. ✨️ I am a super stiff painter, and really struggle to get loosen up! So I will definetely give that gesso a proper go! About that ink - is Derwent Inktense ok to use - as its compressed ink too...? 🤞 Thank you so much, Karen. ⚘️
I love this tutorial and need to know more about pastels. I watched it twice. It’s a great pastel painting, although I have to say that I liked it best at minute 17:40 and also 19:00. What would you use to set the pastel if you were putting in some acrylic paint in a final layer?
Glad it was helpful! I don't work with acrylic so I don't have a good answer for you. If you do mix media with pastel and pastel is on the top layers the painting will need to be protected under glass.
Hi Karen - great video, thank you. I have a question, I paint with pastels on top of an acrylic underpainting, which has a textured clear gesso base. I couldn't apply so much pastel as you do, as it won't adhere. I assume the very thinly applied acrylic is causing the problem and that doing a different underpainting means that your pastel stays put? Framing is a nightmare for me, as dust always goes on to the mount around it, but I would love to be able to build up layers as you do.
Acrylic underpaintings can be tricky if the painting is too thick . It needs to be the consistency of watercolor or the pastel will not stick to it. If it is thin enough it shouldn't be a problem so I am not sure what is happening for you! Thanks for watching the video!
@@KarenMargulis Thanks for getting back to me Karen. My underpainting is extremely thin as I like dribbles etc, so I don't know why I am having problems. I have ended up using the hard square pastels more than, say, Unison (which I love), as they cause more of a problem. I'll just have to keep experimenting to see what works! Many thanks for all your wonderful videos - I find them fascinating and informative. I live in the UK, so can't come to any of your workshops, so really appreciate your generosity in showing us different techniques in this wonderful medium.
Can you do a video where you show how to use pastels with limited colors and mixing colors in a painting? I'm not in a financial situation that allows me to have anywhere near the huge selection you have so I'm not able to follow with your demonstrations or many others.
That is a great idea! I have done some lessons on using a limited palette on my Patreon group but I will add your suggestion to my list! Thank you for watching!
I think that if people leave, it’s the grating sound of that pipe foam insulation on the paper as picked up and amplified by the microphone - it’s pretty rough!
Yes, please...demo the art graph! This was such a great lesson, that ended with a beautiful painting. Thank you!
Coming soon!
Yes! Would love to see Art graph underpainting demo
Love that orange glow!
Love it! Those colors are gorgeous!🎉

Thank you!

I would like to see you demo the art graph. Thank you.
DEFINITELY !!! I'd love a live demo using this black block. This is a great technique!

Loved the process! I must get brave & loosen up 😁
You can do it!
Karen you are my favourite teacher! I m so happy when you relase a new video! 😘
Thank you very much!
Wow very atmospheric and reminds me a little of Frazetta. I think this is really good.
Thank you very much!
Wow 🤩 beautiful texture and colors!!! Thanks 🙏 again Karen. Love this!
Thank you so much!
Absolutely stunning! The layers and texture you achieved made it a very loose impressionistic interpretation.
Thank you very much!
Yes please, can we see the artgraph! Felt inspired by this one, thank-you.
Thank you! It is on the list now!

Awesome! Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
I understand the ugly stage. I love this video.... working your color magic. I tend to get stuck in detail so I really appreciate your teaching.
Thanks so much for watching!
🏵Burning sunset. Extremely impressive scenery! Brilliant!
Many thanks! I appreciate your comment!

Yes would love to see a video with the art graph technique. I'm still trying to like paper with gesso. I like what you have done with it.
Thanks!!
@Susan I find the clear gesso chews up the pastel too much and it doesn’t take many layers either. Maybe I need to embrace the texture like Karen says…
@@1DaTJo I don’t like the texture of clear gesso but I’ve been experimenting with Pastel Ground and it has a finer grit to it and like it better.
@@susanhester thanks. Is it like sanded paper? I’m trying to find some product that creates a surface similar to uart or luxarchival.
@@1DaTJo it makes watercolor paper have a fine sanded texture. I still prefer Uart but I’m still working with it.
Thank-you, Karen! So great to see your experimentation with new surfaces!

Thank you for another great demo!
Glad you liked it!
I love the finished painting!

Is the art graph similar to Derwent inktense sticks?
Yes very much so!
Maybe people leave at ten minutes because they get excited and run to get their pastels out. 👍
That is so kind!! Thanks!
I have a large easel, where can I buy that blackboard that I see you have there? thanks. You really got some mad skills there lady...kudos!
