I have learned so much from watching your videos! You are a wonderful teacher. You explain things so simply and clearly. I'm always amazed how I learn something new every time I watch another of your videos. Your way of sharing all the little tricks and details that go into pastel painting make me an avid viewer. Thank you for so willingly sharing your expertise with us!
Karen, Thank you for this very informative video. Greens can be a challenge. The dirt and variety of values that you explained bring it all to life! Very helpful!!!
My illustration teacher used to tell us not to worry about how it looks when you’re building up the painting because in his words, “it will suck until it’s done.” But your paintings never ever ever suck even when they’re at the most basic stage. Even at the most basic stage when you’re creating shapes, your paintings are stunningly beautiful and they just get even more beautiful as you progress. And best of all you teach us how to develop all this beauty for ourselves.
Watching you create with pastels es so much sense! All the advice about composition, colour values, focal points and what to leave out is priceless! Thank you for your inspiration!
This is a great demonstration of how to use contrast between the red/green complementary pair to create colors that pop! We love the suggestion to use denatured alcohol- it works with a lot of dry media, like graphite and charcoal, too!
Very inspiring tutorial!! I have suffered from artist block for years but I can feel that I need to start painting again for my mental well being. I just don’t understand why it’s so hard to get going!! Your tutorials are some of the best 💕
@Linda G I have just started on my drawing and watercolour journey and I believe the answer to your question "why is it so hard to get going?" is that it can be a lot of work. I always thought the people that painted well were gifted and that was that. But in reality it's hours and hours of learning, experimenting and practising. Cheers.
I just finished a painting that was WAY TOO GREEN!!! All the tips at the end of the video are going to help me correct this. As usual, I'm NOT finished yet......I got my punch list to head me in the right direction...... Thanks for this video...
THe KEM TL curated florals set I ordered is scheduled to arrive this afternoon and the timing is perfect for trying this demo! I’m in your patreon group also and since you use the set often it will also come in handy there. It can also function as a versatile workshop/class set and fills some important holes in my pastel collection. As always an insightful teaching resource today. Thank you! (Happy to see a reference to the Smokies where the DH and I spent so many happy times in our youth-now in the apple country of New England-no complaints 😊).
Hi Karen. Have painted in every medium except pastel.Have sennelier soft pastels and Jack Richardson pastels. Would you suggest any other. Variety is the spice of life.
Hi Ken you have great pastels. My personal favorite are Terry Ludwig pastels which are a nice square shape and slightly less soft that the Sennelier pastels so they make a great marriage!
Thanks for watching! I like green paper for just about anything. It is a nice neutral . If I was painting something with a lot of green I would be sure to underpaint with some warmer colors.
It's so beautiful! I wanna try it, but I have only a limited colours of pastels since am an oil painter. I love watchin' your videos. Really inspiring. 😍☺️🙏 You and @Susan Jenkins are my faves! 😘
Thank you Karen for this tutorial! So inspiring! Which type of paper should I need? I'm used to paint in aquarelle paper. Could I use that? Or you use a particular type of paper specifically for pastels? Thanks again, greetings from Argentina!
Yes you can! Canson mi-teintes paper is also goo and economical. I like to use sanded papers. I am not sure what kind is available in Argentina but look for something that says sanded paper for pastels.
Hi Karen, I love your videos. They've taught me so much, One thing: I notice that you cough frequently when you work and I expect it's from the pastel dust. So I hope you are using a mask when you are not on camera. The pastel dust can really be bad for your lungs and I want to keep watching your videos!!! 'thank you so much
Lovely. Really haas that summer day feel

Can we use turpentine?
