      I doubt it, it´s hard to get constitutional reforms done unless there is some consensus in favour. The FN want a more authoritarian state on the Victor Orban model, the left want to return to a parliamentary Republic like the fourth Republic.
      The Macronites want to keep the Gaullist constitution.
      What will happen if Marine Le Pen wins the presidency in 2027 is it will inevitably produce a constitutional crisis as much of what she wants to do is explicitly unconstitutional.
      She effectively wants to use a referendum to increase the presidency´s execuvtive powers (and they are already substantial in France!).

      Not really. But, well, quiet a lot is happening, so it's hard to catch it all accurately (especially with the opponents accusing each other).
      Two examples :
      1. Ciotti is not the ex-leader, he still is the head of the LR. While big-shots of the LR oppose his decision and tried to oust him, the vote was in an illegal manner (they didn't even check who was voting, the vote was counted as "all those who are silent are for" and those who spoke up were shut down with no debate). He has support from many LR militants and many rightwing voters want a rightwing alliance.
      2. Marion Marechal didn't defect of the RN, she left political life for several years before coming back to a party that was closer to her views. And, she didn't ask the voters to support the RN, but the national union (lead by the RN), which was the objective of her party (to form a right wing union).
      I haven't arrived at the leftwing shenanigans yet so don't know if they will be accurate or not.

    • @EKsUrbanTracks
      @EKsUrbanTracks 3 місяці тому +15

      The illusion of choice, it feels more like a trap.
      Voting for your fave might not be the best strategy depending on the outcome you wish for. I used to vote FOR someone, but the "choices" have been so terrible that you ended up choosing the best candidate to beat the one you hate the most, or the least crappy one that has a chance to really win.
      You can't not vote, because it'd give other voters more power, you can't just "vote away" and waste it, and protest votes do not count. You know this ballot is important and all you can do is motivate people who are disillusioned by our biased elective process to just vote.
      Also voting at the start of Summer, just as people leave after a year of being fucked left and right, is a guarantee of a low turnout.
      I hope I'm wrong.

    So many questions, maybe somebody here can answer them:
    1. Isn't there a minimum electoral campaign length? Three weeks between calling the elections and the first round seems like a short time for alliances to be made, campaigns to be organized, leaflets to be printed and so on.
    2. I know the French President can dissolve the Nation Assembly, but it is the Government that organizes the elections. So why was Macon allowed to set the dates of the elections?
    3. In some countries with a presidential system, the President cannot be involved in political debate while in office. By default, he resigns his statute as a party member. Why isn't this the case in France? Does it go back to the establishment of the Fifth Republic and de Gaulle's demands?
    Thanks

    • @Tasiturne
      @Tasiturne 3 місяці тому

      the two votes for the assembly must be between 20 and 40 days after the dissolution is announced (09/06) so the choice of when is limited by that time frame
      For the third question he can participate in the sense of ''defending '' the party program but cannot organise a debate between himself and the opposition
      Macron can say '' hey you shloud really vote for the guy in your city who represent Renaissance'' bc it helps him, if he loose the elections he will have to choose a prime minister from the winning party even if it's not his wich we call ''cohabitation'' (it happenned twice in 65 years)
      Tldr: there's two options
      1- Macron party wins the elections and reinforce their power to vote laws etc
      2- far right or left coalition wins and Macron has to appoint a PM from said winner party (cohabitation)

    i would advise to not use "far-left" to describe "La France Insoumise", as ithere was actually a legal battle in france to recognize the movement as a "radical left", not "far left".
    for people looking the the difference in france, "far-left" movements usually are revolutionary in nature, looking to overthrow the capitalistic/republican system to replace it with a communist/anarcho-syndicalist state, nowadays by vote, strikes and pacifists actions.
    the "radical left" tradition is in what we call "democratic socialism" that usually looks at keeping and reinforcing representative democracy while transforming the capitalistic economy into some degree of a socialist one (usually, and it's the case for LFI, its applying Keynesian economics, by keeping a private market and property but making it very regulated by the state, and increase wealth redistribution to decrease inequalities and increase production).
    calling LFI "far-left" would imply that someone as Franklin D. Roosevelt would be a far-left American president.

    The French election has completely eclipsed the UK election internationally. The UK is like a little local election somewhere down the country, whereas the French is like a critical bi-election which can shift the balance of government power (in this case the EU Council and Commission). The French election will effect 100's of millions of EU citizens outside of France, whereas the UK election will effect zilch outside the UK. This is perhaps a very clear example of how brexit has diminished the UK's relevance. It has got very little to do with knowing the outcome, the implications are far more long term than simply what happens in the next month.
