I keep watching this over and over. I still don't know HOW on Earth you hold that last note so beautifully and long and strong in "A New Life." Gives me chills and leaves me in awe every time. The audience must have been bowled over!!!!
Hearing you sing A NEW LIFE always gives me vibes. That scene with Lucy getting fired from the Red Rat..... Spider is literally the craziest and creepiest boss you ever want to work with. Wow.
I love this song so much. I tried so hard to master it over the years. I'm good ........ until the key change! Dang it!! No one does it like you, Linda!!!
Linda's performance of "A New Life" in this video demonstrates why she won the Theatre World Award and was nominated for the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. She exemplifies Sanford Meisner's advice on acting: "Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances."
I would have Loved to have seen Linda give her acceptance speech after winning the Theatre World Award. I've only very recently become acquainted with the musical theater community, actresses such as Kelli O'Hara and others, Linda is Still my Top favorite singer/actress although Kelli O'Hara may be tied with Linda now. I would have loved to see Linda win a Tony award if not for Jekyll&Hyde, perhaps for her role as Camille Claudel (even though I was never fortunate to see her as Camille either, but I've heard little sound clips, and her acting was great, dramatic and emotional).
Linda, Thank you for posting these! They bring back such wonderful memories for us too. My wife and I, living in Houston, were extremely fortunate to be sitting in the audience at the Alley Theatre in Houston for the 1990 Jekyll and Hyde debut. We were amazed by the the music and lyrics, production and performances. But, we were absolutely mesmerized by your fantastic performance as Lucy. We have seen most, if not all, of the different production treatments for Jekyll and Hyde. From your debut in 1990 at the Alley, your pre-Broadway tour in 1995 at TUTS (3 times), the second national tour in 1999/2000 (twice), the revamped North American production in 2012 with Constantine Maroulis, Deborah Cox and Teal Wicks (not a huge fan for sure) and a couple of regional productions. The debut in Houston, the pre-Broadway tour and the second national tour productions are truly our favorites. Before the production was revamped and tweaked so differently. To us, and I would think to most anyone seeing them, your original performances of Lucy are an order of magnitude better than all the others that have come after. The tone and tenor of your voice, your range, stamina and complete control you have bringing perfect subtlety and effortless power to these songs simply awes us to this day. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with so many of us. We hope you continue to post these types of videos that you find interesting and willing to share with your fans (longtime and ones just discovering you).
Once again I stayed up late just to watch this! It was so bittersweet getting to the end of this series, because I’ve so thoroughly enjoyed you walking us through this production! Please do more like this in the future! Wishing you a happy and healthy 2022 full of blessings. I can’t wait to see you perform again and hopefully I’ll be able to meet you again too! It’s been much too long since the last time. You and your music being so much joy into my life, thank you! Until then, I look forward to watching on here.
Thanks for sharing these videos and recollections. It's summer in the Southern Hemisphere, the butterflies are abundant, and the birds are out and about with their young. I'm in Tasmania, and it's actually time for the young Devils to leave their mums and find their own territories. I might see one, as they come to steal my duck's eggs. It's a fine exchange. Here's hoping 2022 is filled with joys and blessings.
Or When does the heart stop pounding?, My Gosh The Emotion in This performance, and the Delivery of this performance. I don't know that I should Dare to even say this, but I'm going to anyway, I think the delivery of This particular performance outshines even her Broadway performance just because of the visible emotion she delivers in This performance of "A New Life".
@@brookemartin6101 I totally agree Brooke! This is a "heart pounding, goosebump, heartbreaking" performance! Will they applaud?!? Yes! A thousand times yes! Thirty plus years later we can still hear the applause! Unforgettable!
Watching A New Life brought back memories of sitting in a theater in 1996 and watching the show, this definitely was the goosebumps moment for me. And watching this video definitely did it again, you were spectacular (and the audience didn't just applaud, they exploded)
Oh Linda!!!!!! A New Life has been my favorite piece of yours since I first heard it many years ago, quite possibly during the pre-Broadway production. It spoke volumes to me….still does to this day.
luminescent. i used to listen to this time after time to practice the technique for belting, and for extending long notes. still brings chills and tears to my eyes.
BRAVA!!! Stunningly gorgeous. I, too, am glad that you ended the piece where you did, We were still mesmerized by your voice and performance, It would have been a downer to end it with brutality, Thank you so much for this stroll down your memory lane which has added some new memories for me, Happy New Year to a beautifully gifted lady,
I've so enjoyed watching these Jekyll and Hyde highlights and hearing the backstories behind each one. I was in the Alley Theatre audience during the 1990 premier in Houston. I'm still attending Alley Theatre productions (season ticket holder here), but THIS one will forever remain my favorite.
Happy New Year Linda! That number…A New Life…is entirely wonderful from first note to last and your voice is absolutely beautiful as always. Thank you for continuing to bring your music to the world and for sharing your incredible gift.
Thank you. I have always wanted to see J&H clips from the 1990 Alley Theatre, but to be able to see these clips presented by THE Linda Eder is such a special gift. Your commentary and insight coupled with these surprisingly good copies...I can't even right now. I was a teenager in the late 90s when a friend of mine lent me a copy of the Original Broadway Cast Album, and I will always remember the first time I heard you singing. I immediately ran out to buy the "It's Time" album and the double disc J&H album. You have been my all-time favorite singer ever since. "The Other Side of Me" will always be my personal favorite album of yours, but your song "Even Now" from "It's No Secret Anymore" is (I think) one of the greatest songs of all time. I will never understand how "Even Now" did not become the biggest smash hit single ever. If when you are going through "those VHS tapes" (and are taking any requests) and ever find something on "Even Now," I know I would love to see it! (I had to ask!) Seriously, though, thank you again for sharing all of this! Happy New Year! And I'm subscribed!
Thank you for sharing your personal experience during the production and performance of J & H. You are an artist who really has and stays connected to her fans which creates a feeling and bond that is real and tangible. Your performance of "A New LIfe" is glorious and you must have held that last note so long by a sheer act of will (besides your training, experience, and talent).
I called my best friend Alexis today, and she was singing A New Life at the exact same moment. She told me she was thinking of me while singing it. I just sent her this video. 🥰
Awee. It made me cry when you were telling the story about FRANK/ and him asking GREGORY BOYD.."do you think the audience is going to applaud?" 28:48 and at that moment HE TEXTED YOU! That is special. I am so glad (even if there were times of heartache) that you and Frank joined together to make so much incredible, life changing music, music that will live on! And of course, your beautiful son. You are so blessed!
Thank you for the visit to a most magical time. Some powerful (and of course, beautiful) performances! Thank you again for posting these videos. What is interesting about the duet between Hyde and Lucy is that the lyrics echo comments sung in "The Girls of the Night"--and some of the music for duet recall rhythmic (and even melodic) segments from the earlier number as well. As someone who saw only the Broadway version, it's fascinating to see how the show evolved.
That song "A New Life" is my most favorite and impactful to my own life. I've seen you in concert dozens of times through the years and often wondered why you don't sing it in your concerts. Wonderful to watch these videos. Happy New Year!! and thank you so much.

Ok so listening to A New Life leaves me very emotional. I recall seeing you in the show on Broadway and getting teary when you sang this. Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm a sentimental dope and your omission of Lucy's death scene gave me closure, in a way. I always thought her death was an unnecessary narrative choice banking on shock value that perpetuated the idea that prostitutes are inherently undeserving of happiness. I know it was to put the nail in the coffin that we should despise Hyde, because up until this point he'd only slaughtered bigots who'd scorned him. Yes, I know it's supposed to be every bit as heart-wrenching as it is, a shocking bait-and-switch, but I can't reconcile the unsatisfying dissonance her ending leaves in my mind. She deserved more dignity. I almost think it should've been Emma/Lisa he targeted instead, out of rage that Lucy had fled from their violent and codependent relationship, and what he is left with is a "more honorable" woman that Hyde doesn't as carnally and forbiddingly desire. Emma/Lisa's death would've had near the same effect because she is ultimately just as innocent as Lucy, but there's more of a reason for Hyde to target her. A win-win plot-wise since Lucy gets to close her arc on a high note, probably being the first prostitute in theatre history to not either be villainized or die tragically, and the narrative gets to keep its dark and shocking nature by martyring the other innocent in the picture. But obviously that would've ruined the dramatic ending wedding sequence, so I do understand how and why this choice was made even if I'd have personally tinkered it differently. My fanfictiony autism-spawned ramblings aside, it should really tell you how much soul you breathed into this role that we still mourn Lucy Harris 30 years after the fact. Thank you for sharing this series and ending it where she, indeed, proved the cynics wrong. A New Life will always give me chills.
Where to start with this take. First and foremost the board of governors are not "bigots", hypocrites yes, but they were 100% right about Jekyll's experiment being unethical and dangerous. Point two. Lucy is a prostitute which is dangerous profession. It has nothing to do with stereotypes of "fallen women" being seen less as or expendable. Point three: No. It doesn't make sense for Emma/Lisa to be targeted. Your reasoning seems to stem from "well she's upper class and chaste and therefore worthy of scorn." It makes zero sense because Emma never comes face to face with Hyde until the very end and the fact that it's not Emma who Hyde is obsessed with. Lucy's death makes narrative sense because her influence not only brought about Hyde, but her death also heralds his death. It is the finally straw in his depravity because he kills an woman who, although is a prositute, is an innocent victim of the circumstances in her life. Her death completes the Jekyll/Hyde's character and the whole narrative arc the show runs on. Ffs
@@1SpicyMeataball I'm not sure I understand the vitriol you have for my interpretation. I am happy that you feel so strongly for this musical as well, though. It deserves reactions like ours. My judgment is clouded simply because I love Lucy Harris and am loathe to watch her die, buried among her foremothers when I'd been lulled by the false promise of her new life. False promise of breaking from this archetype suffered by the Violettas and Carmens before her. And so maybe the decision to kill her is, in fact, narratively sound, it certainly made me feel something after all. I hope your day has been bright in spite of the ire my humble take brought you.
I’ve really enjoyed this series. Thank you for making it and sharing your memories from this time of your life. Have you sent any of these videos to Mr. Wildhorn? Would be interesting to see if he has any fun memories from this time. Thanks again, you’re the best!
Careful - your forgiveness and healing are showing. ;) Yes, Jeremy knew how to be a musical director for you better than anyone since. No hating on Billy. And thank Dog for Ozzie! That said ... You made me remember the Christmas that I came to visit (wait, should I preface? Visit? Thought you live there? Well I do know, but when I visited my parents were healthier and didn't need live in care) - AND anyway I came to visit and Dad had had enough of the old artificial tree. So I said "What's your point. We have 12 acres of trees. Ya wanna go get one or can I finish assembling this lost-cause bastard? " - He took the bait. But then came home and insisted that his mother never had it in water and it would be just fine. Uh Huh. I'd been storing my 3K+ collection of German vintage and recent Radko hand-blown glass ornaments here in the garage. So, I dug them out. And decorated a tree with no water. 2 days later my mother woke me up at around 2 AM because as the needles were falling off, and there was no water to support the drooping limbs, my ornaments were hitting the floor. Like rain. He later said "Ya know, I think back then we had it up Christmas Eve, and then down a few days later. Maybe that's what I was thinking of." This was Thanksgiving.

Is that chuck Wagner? I saw him on one of the national tours. He was great! And a nice guy. I wish he'd done the cast album. One of them, anyway...
Maybe that's what I was thinking of."
This was Thanksgiving.
I have the same Rudolph. Lol
You should do Svengali I think it’ll be fun
