Part of ADV riding is having a "base" plan with flexibility. Point being, go with a base plan of knowledge as explained. But, be flexible to camp, hotel, or whatever. This way you are not stuck on a rigid plan where if something goes wrong or changes, you can adapt. I always ride with all supplies to survive on my own. And, as a type 1 diabetic, I must be able to be self-sufficient. So much more weight there than just riding. Good explanation Pav

I’m 67, and I have type 2 diabetes, congestive heart failure, and a kidney transplant, so I agree, being flexible and self sufficient is pretty important :)
I’m retired, so I’m able to start my trips without any reservations or any definite plans. For the most part, I have unlimited time, and that helps a lot. But, I’m generally ready to start working my way home after 3 weeks. I always have a general direction planned and a number of possible destinations. My maps might have hundreds of notes on them. I mark all of the possible routes I think I might want to take, along with fuel stops in areas where that might be an issue. I also mark interesting places I might want to stay, eat, or visit. The no reservations or definite plans probably only works because I travel alone. I’m in the USA. I’ve been coast to coast and border to border, a few times, and from Mexico to Alaska all in the last 3 years. I really enjoy that my freeform method of travel kind of freaks out my family and friends, so that may be part of why this works for me :)

I travelled in New Zealand for 5 weeks. The only plan was when to pick up the bike, and when to drop it off.
Every day I got on the bike and rode out of town. I rode all day. If the tank was less than 1/2 full I'd stop at the next petrol station I saw. If I got hungry I'd stop and have a meal. About an hour before dark I'd put "backpacker" into the GPS and ring the nearest one in front of me and book in. It was the best trip of my life. Every road was perfect, every view spectacular. Every meal delicious. Every backpacker's was welcoming.

Correct. "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!" A loose plan is not a strict plan but it is still a plan! Thanks again Pavlin. Best adventure bike channel on the net!

Lots of people might start care free, but unless someone does everything for them, most people evolve into a planner of some sort. Even if it's just a rough outline, with built in flexibilities.
It's the most efficient way to enjoy your time to it's best.
    Ride safe, happy travels 👍

I think when people says they travel without a plan they mean no set route and maybe no booking for the night. It comes down to your definition of "plan".

Balance is the key. Actually, having a plan what to look for makes the travel more exciting, like having a goal to reach 👌🏻

Good point Pavlin. It's an oxymoron: my plan is to have no plans ha ha. I personally plan down to the smallest detail especially the things I intend to visit, the worst thing is having been to a far away place and maybe missing out on something really interesting. But then once I travel I have no difficulty changing my plans based on how I feel, my health, the weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Having planned well in advance also helps me a lot to change my plans if necessary.

Great video as always, and thank you very much for posting. Completely agree with having a plan. I live in the Western US and when traveling through Southern Oregon, Nevada, Utah, etc.... I am mindful of when and where to fill up, so have a plan for fueling, but do in fact deviate as you noted. One thing I do is make a campground reservation; I do this as it eliminates the stress of looking for a place to stay, so my thing. Note, camping is the best way to go! As far as eating, follow your advice, eat out! Yeah I carry a couple of cans of chili just in case, and.....I do pack a stove to brew my french press coffee! Anyways, wish I was over in your neck of the woods as I would love to talk, and when you make it over to the states, let us all know as I know a bunch of folks would love to meet you in person.
    Take care brother!

The problem with most detailed Plans is that the detailed Plan becomes obsolete the moment it is released.
Planning is another thing, it's the ability to use the available information to realize a project. A travel project.
Gathered and systematized relevant information allows you to quickly adapt to a changing environment.
My choice is planning, not a dogmatic plan.

I’m NOT bored, I have an ‘okay’ budget and, plenty of time … I’d STILL plan, though. My mate has driven from London back home to Zimen (Karnobat) many times, in a truck, with plant equipment on a trailer & he blitzes the journey in under 2 days. I’d LOVE to make the journey on my new bike but, it scares the shit outta me & I’d need to plan it to the ‘Nth degree’.

I don't know. For me a plan is when I set a route and some timelines. Passport and wallet and GPS don't count as planning. So you get your passport, but have no intention to cross borders, you take your GPS, but you don't set a destination except maybe when the evening comes and you need to find somewhere to sleep. Following your logic I should leave my home in underwear and barefoot, cause anything else would be considered planning.

I think we should make a distinction between having a plan and being prepared for whatever circumstances one might find himself in.

Planning part is an integral part of traveling.
Even deciding to travel with out of a plan is an actually a plan!
Anyway - planning is fun as well as preparation! Plan don't have to be specific for every day or kilometer but still - it is a plan! Picking a direction and setting time range ( or even no time range ) is a plan!

Pavlin, the festival in Latvia is a mass meeting format, and direct questions, an event where you have little control. Just like you say, you better have a plan of what you're doing there, otherwise you might get lost, for example: Do a little research on each of the riders sitting on the panel with you. Set up at least two cameras on your behalf. One in front of the entire panel, another behind watching the entire audience, and possibly one that you hold in your hand and take close-up pictures of yourself and your colleagues at the table. Your success depends on your preparation, that's how you claim, and I can only agree with you completely.

A lot of people are so full of bullshit it runs out their ears. You can smell them coming from the otherside of the mountain. You better have a plan and two backups at least. Lot of what if's out on the road in a strange place. Two big things you can't control, weather and other drivers. Safe travels. If all plans work out you still have a hell of a ride ahead of you. May want to check border checking status of Finland before hand.

Definiere „Plan“! Niemand startet komplett ohne Plan und zickzackt in der Welt herum! Ich verstehe den Sinn dieses Videos nicht.... Jeder nimmt seinen Pass mit und sorgt für einen vollen Tank. Oft fahre ich in Richtung auf ein fernes Ziel, aber ohne genaue Route und weiß morgens nicht, wo ich abends schlafe. Das ist meine Art von „ ohne Plan“. Alles Gute.🙂

Traveling without plan is traveling without brain. Of course no-one need a list for every minute or mile. But a kind of frame in which one can move is absolutely necessary. Otherwise all can end up badly.
