  • Watch "Why I Ride | Shortfilm", a new shortfilm by Fred van Leeuwen (The Image Engineer) and Rider's Block, documenting a rider and his Royal Enfield Classic 500 custom motorcycle.
Filmed in Mosselbay, Wilderness, George, Betty's Bay, and Gordon's Bay, along the coast of South Africa, this film takes the viewer on a journey as the rider explores the roads and the reason why he rides.
Filmed on a Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema 4K and the Sirui 50mm f1.8 Anamorphic lens.
Special thanks to Sunshine Co & Sirui South Africa for lending me this lens.

If somebody asks me, why i ride. I allways tell them, there are a million reasons why. But lets make it easy, life is allways about getting to a destination, reaching something. Riding a Bike isn‘t because it isn‘t about where you go, or why you go, the only thing that matters, is the moment. And in that moment, your free.

37 years ago I was a 16 year old Aussie exchange student in central Illinois in the US. I discovered a ‘69 650 Triumph under a tarp in my host father’s farm shed. He hadn’t ridden her in years and said if I could get it going I could ride it when ever I liked so long as I stayed off the main roads. No license of course. A country boy from South Australia having grown up riding and working on bikes I got her running straight away. Through that summer I rode her everywhere, exploring back roads all around Danville. One time after a full day working for my host father re-roofing a barn on another of his farms I took the long way home. It was a beautiful balmy mid-western summer evening, the sun going down, fire flies dancing in and out of the corn fields that flanked the road, the warm wind tugging tears of joy from the corners of my eyes as I wound that old trumpy out to well over 100mph. A benchmark sense of freedom that I now know I am not likely to ever match. But I keep riding and I keep trying! Thank you for a great video mate!👊

We've not been far away from each other: As a high-school student from Germany in Vermont in Indian summer of 1973 I visited my cousin, too. Her husband would had let me ride his enduro ... Back in Germany my brother taught me on his BMW R 75/5. And my parents gifted me a Honda ... Now I live near the danish border and again I have a Honda. One of the best decisions in my life. I'm not able to walk more than 30 meters because of my lunge, at home I got an electric wheel chair, which is not such comfortable seating as on my Honda. Riding through a wood, smelling the taste of mushrooms gave me the feeling, it's not all over, there is something more.
I am thankful for the guardian angels around me, protects me, so I am able to see the beauty of the landscape.
I wish all of you always a secure ride. Be good to yourself. Thanks for you video. 😇🙏

"In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame.

On a motorcycle the frame is gone. You're completely in contact with it all. You're in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming."

My wife wanted to learn how to ride. So i got her a 450$ 1983 honda 450 nighthawk from a coworker. Said all it needed was a battery.
I didnt ride at the time.
So she signed up to do her moto class.
My neighbor asked me after seeing it in my garage if that thing even runs. (He rides)So i ran out , got a battery came back and it started up. He told me what lever did what.
I was in shorts and flip flops.
Road the clutch out into first. Almost dropped bike at first stop.
Caught a straight away and shifted till 3rd gear.......no helmet . Eyes tearing from the wind.
I was 36 year old man who felt like a child.
Hadnt felt that kind of pure joy since my childhood.
The same day i signed up for my moto course. Been riding for 4 yrs.

I ride because there is a sense of freedom about riding a bike. We've got millions of miles of roads to explore together and enjoy. We all ride for different reasons. But the one reason we all ride is for the feeling of freedom. There is a sense of freedom about riding that you just don't get from anything else. Wars have been fought over it in the past. As we all know.

What is this sense of freedom only motorcyclists can experience? Not being a smart ass or anything, I just don’t understand. In so many situations, they’re the absolute worst tool for the job. While the fuel economy might be better/gallon, we’re still talking about a 3 gallon tank on average? Even at 50 mpg, we’re talking 150 mile range on average? Getting soaked in the rain, roasting in the heat? I get the open air ride, but a convertible sounds more sensible. So what is it about putting yourself at such a disadvantage and through hell? Image is the only thing I can possibly think of

From the mid to late 1980’s to early 2000’s I road daily ( when able to ) for some reason I went the next 20 years after that era getting a pit in my gut every spring ,telling my self “next year”, year after year ……this past Xmas season I found myself with a lil extra cash and luckily my mind went straight to “ find a bike “ instead of to “I should pay off a credit card or some other bill” … bikes got expensive in the last twenty years ,so $5k got me an ‘09 FZ1 that’s “ been well ridden” for 30k miles already ..and it was in at least one “slide” type accident , but held up fairly well considering …bottom line , it turned out to be about the perfect bike for me ! Nice enough looking ,in the style I love (standard upright seating inline 4) and fast enough, handles well , etc etc …., but not too nice that I have to worry about daily cleaning after a ride ,or that if I forget to chain it it’ll disappear immediately… got lucky on those fronts and it took me a minute to realize I didn’t need anything nicer ,faster , cleaner ( though I’m still always looking 😂) ….but now all I’m doing is slowly going through maintenance and doing my best to keep it running great ,but , most of all… I feel like I’m living again finally !

great production work on this film. I like the part of " Lean into it " that's what I'm trying to do. My son got me back into riding motor cycles again. i rode as kid but stopped when I moved to California. Now living in NJ and being much older it's a great way to Lean into Life. Enjoyed your film. Hi @fredvanleeuwen I recognized the Outeniqua Pass from the 1st seconds of the film... a road I know like the back of my hand. I dance this pass on my Transalp XL650V several times a week between my home Oudtshoorn (my lovely Karoo) and everything between Still Bay & Plettenberg Bay (all of the Garden Route). Only after watching I read the text below and sure enough there it is...
You had me before any sound. Then at 2:15 - 2:50 you give the most accurate describe the essence of what riding a motorcycle is. The way you combine the video at fast speed + the calm, leisurely audio of both the narration & music, just further strengthens the true story you tell so well in this video. Fantastic job and a pleasure to watch.

your vid touched my heart....least to say. Because, more or less, I feel the same level of freedom, nirvana when ever I go on a ride on my RE Classic RE BS 3 variant. Had been riding since 50 years or so, .... In a way, the Motor cycle makes soul connection and instantly takes you into a nirvana yet fully awake and reflexive to the road conditions. Very difficult to articulate,,,, you have so beautifully conveyed and picturized. Wishing you many miles of smiles.

10:03 I used to ride, but family and finances got in the way so when someone offered me a decent amount for the bike I had l accepted it and never replaced it.
Then I got old and the kids started families of their own. I retired, paid off the mortgage, sold the house and we moved in to something smaller and I found l finally had some spare cash.
Whenever a bike went past i would follow it with my eyes. I realised that the time in front of me is limited and if I don't get back on 2weels now, I never would.
I toured my local bike shops and made my choice.
That was 4 years ago and I am riding after a break of 30 years. I opted for a scooter, a Kawasaki j300 as my wife used to be an enthusiastic pillion but her health means it would be impossible for her to get on a motorbike.
As a teenage rider I used to think of riding as being like flying an aeroplane but in only 2 dimensions.
One day I will get too old; I'm 72 as of 2023, and I can't see it happening any time soon.
Back in the early '70s in a book by an American evangelist, he talked about dealing with people on various types of drugs. One of the things he said was that bikers didn't do drugs - they didn't have to! They get high just from riding. I don't remember much of the rest of the book, but that has stayed with me for over 50 years, and I ride whenever I can.

It really makes me wander sometimes how guys who arnt into motorcycles survives. Idk. Just seems like a strange life. I grew up in a family dealership. Raced. Worked. Rode. Almost Every aspect of my life for as long as I can remember has involved motorcycles. Street. Trail. Moto. Dual. Choppers. Bobbers. Cruisers. Sport bikes. Stock bikes. Cafe racers. New. Old. Vintage. I love them all. At the root they are all motorcycles but they all offer unique riding experiences. Not to sound sappy or anything but I just can’t imagine life without motorcycles. I’d just feel empty
