You are my favourite lego youtuber. ❤ and I have a question for next tuesday: what are your top 3 most wanted themes to return? Also, what qualifications did you need to become a designer?
Sometimes people with creative jobs suffer from a condition where they feel unable to produce any new work, e.g. authors can have writer's block. Did you experience something similar when you were working for Lego and what was your strategy to overcome "Designer's Block"?
I am very much enjoying your Tuesday Talks. You present a unique perspective as a former Lego designer. A lot of questions related to your prior Lego job and Lego workings which I think is to be expected and I find very interesting. I appreciate your candidness and honesty and I appreciate your own bias/likes/dislikes presented in a very respectful way. Ok so a question. Sorry if it's been asked already as I can't remember. What, if anything, do you know about Lego Trains, current and historical, and do you think Lego will continue their new train production pattern, change it, or possibly stop it altogether?
Absolutely love this series, I also like how long this video was. Like a podcast!! Thanks for answering my question! It’s fun and encouraging to hear all about the hiring process. 😅
Did you learn anything about the graphic design process from coworkers while you worked at LEGO? How does the day to day differ, and is it as hard to become a graphic designer as it is to become a model designer?
The Star Trek Brick Licence has been picked up by blue brixx, a german company. And their Sets are amazing, and they´re doing it all, Weapons, Shuttles, 3 different sizes for most popular ships...it´s insane if you´re a collector.
Follow-up question on where you buy your LEGO: why do you prefer to shop via the LEGO-store rather then other retailers? Does it have to to with the VIP system? If so, can you explain how it works?
When building a set, do you organize the parts in each stage before building or just leave them in messy piles? What do you perceive to the pros/cons of sorting or not? I recently built Assembly Square modular and with many bags (and bags in bags) in a build stage, it felt overwhelming without stage sorting.
If there is a new element included in a set, how much input does the designer get on the form and function of that element? When in the design process do new elements begin getting produced? Are they ready in time for designers to use them when prototyping the set or only for final production?
When designing specifically play features for sets, are they tested digitally with some sort of physics simulator? Or do you just build it irl? And in the case of play features that rely on new elements, do you have to wait for a prototype element to test the play feature?
Why is the same LEGO piece sometimes a lot more expensive in certain colours? Is this the case while designing, or does it only happen in the aftermarket?
Though you can’t sell the sets that you are sent from Lego, what would happen if you sold pieces from them? For example, since you often take your sets apart and sort them out, what if you accidentally sold some of those pieces in bulk on brick link? Would that be a problem?
Is there a "brick pit" like in Lego Masters that designers can use when they're designing a set? Are employees who are not directly involved in the designing process allowed to visit the designers' area or it's off limits for them?
Hi Tiago! A question from me and my wife: do you have any thoughts about the environmental impact of Lego manufacturing? What do you think about Lego's contribution to plastic pollution?
I have (what I think it is) an awesome idea to submit to Lego Ideas. However, I've been posponing it for a few months because of the minifigures. Do you have any idea or advice to how to design them?
Have you considered participating to MOC contests? Like Iron Builder, Vignweek, brickscalibur… It would be cool to have the process documented on your channel
You mentioned that you are not allowed to sell the review sets that were sent to you by Lego. I assume that you can't give them away as a present either. Does that imply that you have to keep those bricks forever?
Hey Tiago! Despite me not having bought any Lego products in around 20 years, I absolutely love your channel. I think I’d like to get into Lego building as a hobby, and was considering picking up one of the “Classic” sets to amass a ton of pieces all at once. I was wondering if you had any recommendations in that department? Thanks!
Do those working in the retail Lego stores get the same benefits as those working in the actual offices? Like the employee discount and perks? I know those working at the parks don't since those are not owned or operated by Lego, but I've always wondered about the retail stores.
I don't hear you talk too often about Minifigures. I know you're more about the build, but do you have any favourites? I personally got into Minifigures before truly getting back into buying sets. I have a random specific attachment to the Riddler minifig with the question mark staff, I think from the LEGO Batman Movie sets. Also, the figures from Rivendell are all kinds of awesome.
24:14 I actually have that box right beside me here. I kinda set myself a task of using the parts in each of the colour-coded bags to build something totally not animal-related. So far I've made a spaceship from the light blues, a skyscraper from the darker blues, and a bouncy castle from the pink/purples.
So glad you have seeped up with the Tuesday talks. As LEGO is shifting towards being more environmentally aware do you think LEGO will return to 9v train track to help reduce battery dependancy.
Hi Tiago; At lego, I imagine not every build stays in tact and is pieced out after a while. Who is responsible for taking it apart and sort it. Is there a special sorting robot of sorts?
I’ve heard you say that golden or silver pieces in a set can bring up the price of the set. Why is this? I assume that there is no real gold or silver in the pieces right?
Love this series! Maybe you've already answered this, but... How does a designer go about proposing a new piece mould? If it's a completely new type of shape that can't be achieved by combining multiple smaller parts, how do they incorporate something new into their design?
When working with an established IP, how is that relationship handled? Does the IP owner (like Disney) ask for a specific thing to be built, or does Lego have freedom to brainstorm cool ideas and then just get permission from Disney to sell it?
Do you think Lego would ever lean into the more therapeutic benefits of building and creating with Lego (this is coming from someone who often uses it both in her counseling sessions and just personal use). Do you ever just go and build something after a long and hard day and feel better afterwards?
Hi Tiago, what do you think of the old Mixels line? I really liked the idea of small, separate sets that could be combined into a larger, different composition from the sets that made it up, I don't think it's something that has been done much. Thanks for the answer!
When a Lego designer builds their prototypes, who fetches all the pieces? Does Lego have a dedicated team that brings requested pieces to the designer? Conversely, who breaks down those prototypes and puts away all the pieces? Is that also handled by a special team? How does all that get managed at Lego?
Great episode! What do you think about Lego City for Adults theme? There could be: Lego houses fully enclosed, nice size for $100-200 Mini modulars Module parts of a house/apartment, similar to the Hogwarts Castle sets system. Realistic cars (similar to the vintage taxi and moving truck gwps), but like ones that people have nowadays . Realistic airplanes, helicopters, boats, trucks, etc.
No, though I did get a project to 10k in the past. Former designers are no longer LEGO employees therefore they can participate in official LEGO contests. I have!
I know that you won't know the definite answer for these examples, but I'd love to know your thoughts on how Lego sets like the Osprey and recently the Temple Of Doom can get so far through the design process before being cancelled? Surely any major issues would have been picked up earlier on in the process? As a designer, were you ever aware that a set you were designing could get cancelled at any minute?
Do you ever add an extra challenge to building Lego sets for your own enjoyment? I like to try and have all the studs' Lego logo facing the same direction. It really makes me think about how each piece belongs in a build (and helps stretch out the enjoyment of smaller sets)
How much effort and thought do the 3 in 1 put in the B and C models? See they an afterthought after designing the main model or is it thought of together?
Hi Tiago, what is Lego's attitude to leaks of new sets? Does it really annoy them, or do they just take the attitude that it's all good marketing and advertising in the end? Thanks for all the great videos!
I love these videos. My question for next time is do you have a set that you enjoyed the build a lot but the final product was just OK and if you have a set where you didn't like the build experience but love the final product?
Would you consider having a second camera to the right of centre so your editor has another option than repeating the jumpy quick zooms, and could you keyframe the questions so that people can skip to the next question if they don't need to hear the entire answer? I love the content but the repetitive zooms distract me from what you're saying.
I think they should keep doing these anniversary sets of classic themes every year like Winter Village instead of as a massive multiverse wave theme. AFOLs are more likely to get these kinds of sets than full waves that are more kid/toy friendly designs. Afols have shown time and again they don’t like the sets aimed at kids but then complain they don’t get full waves anymore.
Who choses the general idea of a set? Is it the designer or is it a different team and the designer gets a price and a general concept and he just needs to build it?
Hi Tiago! I've heard Lego employees get one day each month to work on anything they want. Can you share some of the projects you've spent your free day on?
Hi I have a question for the next Tuesday talk: I want to become a LEGO ambassador, but in order for me to become one I need to be a part of a LEGO community or something like that, but I’m having a hard time understanding how and where do I find them:/
If you yourself want to become an ambassador, you'd probably want to go the "fan media" route (like having a blog, YT channel, stuff like that). In that case, the people that follow your stuff are your community. There is more about this topic in the last or second to last Tuesday Talks episode, I think.
The rumor is that Star Wars helmets are done and will get replaced with Midi size ships (like the Super Star Destroyer that is releasing in May) and/or more dioramas. We'll see. Btw great episode Tiago, I really enjoyed it :)
How early do designers hear about future sets? Say Lego wants to release their first set with a new IP, would most designers at Lego hear about it a year in advance or does that new set's designer have to keep it secret from others at LEGO? PS: Lego certified stores do have passports! Thanks for bringing them to my attention, got mine :)
Totally disagree with what he said about Space and Castle. I'm not into either of those themes but fans should be happy about Lion Knight's Castle? Not every castle fan is going to be able to drop £300+ on a Castle set. A lot of those people want it as a theme so it can have that same detail but be smaller, affordable sets.
In Childhood LEGO sets, LEGO Pokémon? TIAGO TUESDAY TALKS #1 you point to nonexisting link to the movie about Lego City from 2019, does it exist somewhere?
YES, more Tuesday Talks. Say, do you get annoyed when people constantly ask questions about your previous job, be it in private or on the channel?
It is to be expected. He presents himself as a former Lego company employee to his audience.
That‘s his THING, so…
You are my favourite lego youtuber. ❤ and I have a question for next tuesday: what are your top 3 most wanted themes to return? Also, what qualifications did you need to become a designer?
I love Tuesday talks so much. Please keep it up!
How long would it take you to think up the ideas and create your 3 in 1 LEGO sets?
Sometimes people with creative jobs suffer from a condition where they feel unable to produce any new work, e.g. authors can have writer's block. Did you experience something similar when you were working for Lego and what was your strategy to overcome "Designer's Block"?

Do you know the website rebrickable where people upload their MOCs? It actually got me back to Lego after 20 years!!
Did you learn anything about the graphic design process from coworkers while you worked at LEGO? How does the day to day differ, and is it as hard to become a graphic designer as it is to become a model designer?

Thank you Tiago ! I have a question : do you have any advice or technique to properly install the stickers ? Cheers from France 🙂
Great episode. Thank you. I would like to hear more about the ovens and the baking of sets!
Do you think LEGO will make a detailed chameleon set ?
Are lego sets designed with a price in mind, or is the set redesigned to fit a certain price point after it is approved?

Is there a "brick pit" like in Lego Masters that designers can use when they're designing a set?

Hi Tiago! A question from me and my wife: do you have any thoughts about the environmental impact of Lego manufacturing? What do you think about Lego's contribution to plastic pollution?
How does Lego decide which sets to send you?
For instance, some reviewers got the new LOTR set but (unfortunately) you didn't
Did you meet the team that sculpt heads/minifigures? Are they still do it in clay or do they switched to digital?
I have (what I think it is) an awesome idea to submit to Lego Ideas. However, I've been posponing it for a few months because of the minifigures. Do you have any idea or advice to how to design them?

Hey Tiago! Despite me not having bought any Lego products in around 20 years, I absolutely love your channel. I think I’d like to get into Lego building as a hobby, and was considering picking up one of the “Classic” sets to amass a ton of pieces all at once. What do you think is the most successful lego theme also do lego designers design sets with real parts or on a designer studio/platform
is bricklink designer a good choice for a new Lego fan wanting to build their own MOCs?
Awesome video Tiago! Please continue doing lego and videos as well! :)

Which mid priced Lego set would you recommend for the building experience to someone who hasn't built Lego in quite some time?
How long does it take for a new lego piece to go from the design process to production and into a set?

Q for you: what was the very first thing you did when starting a new set design at Lego?
Why does Lego retier popular sets which still sell well? Seems like it just makes good design super expensive and less accessible
