glad to find your intelligent articulate review of the p52, not many out there currently, thanks JON. like some others out there (i think), trying to decide between this vs the 2018 Macbook Pro (with vega), or vs the X1 Extreme ...or even the P72. thanks for talking about the display options, very helpful ...and important to consider in the final analysis when making an expensive purchase like this.
Dude, thanks for the great the review. It is going to play a large part in my decision. Also you format is spot on answers first details later. Brilliant!
I have a problem with P52. Whenever I run two or more 32bit applications, it freezes. Does anyone else have the problem? Is it solved? I reinstalled the operating system. Nothing helped.
Nice review! I have the same model, but with the 1080p matte display, and you are not the only one with high thermals. At idle, it sits around 60C, and at full load it gets really close to 100C. Its a great laptop despite this thermal issue, but hopefully with some better thermal paste, you can get lower temps (I plan on doing this when the warranty expires)
Hi, what about temps now? Is it still "At idle, it sits around 60C, and at full load it gets really close to 100C. " did you find any explanation of this issue, or how to solve it?
There is a feature in Lenovo Vantage that will sense when the computer is on your lap, and automatically run cooler. I find this helps a lot, especially for when my P51 vents lava air onto my thighs.
I got the 1080p screen and it's great. I was worried it wouldn't be, but between the battery life improvement over the 4k and the matte screen I am very happy. It is pleasant to code on and seems perfect for the size.
Love my P52 to this day, bought it from an A/V shop that was getting rid of laptops because they were getting stolen/lost. Still had almost 2 years of warranty (32GB, 2x2TB NVMe, P3200 GPU, 8850H, 4K). Getting ready to do PTM7950 because even undervolted it throttles.
Don't worry abouth the necessary of your videos, you are a first man on UA-cam which told me about the overheating of this laptop, it's has a nice 4K display, sound, ports, a six - core processor from the 2017 and 128Gb of RAM, but OVERHEATING. I have a doubt to buy on eBay right now, thank you for that, because I planned to spend all my sholarships for a nice used laptop and ThinkPad probably. Have a nice day¡¡!! Hello from Ukraine¡¡!!
power limits (TDP) of the Quadro P3200 and 8850h cpu can easily overwhelm the cooler, however I have removed the fine mesh on the bottom intake vents, and now use honeywell PTM7950 for the TIM, and thermals are as good as they are gonna get, which does allow it to keep a higher clockspeed than even what I got in this video. Very happy with the current setup, and still use this laptop as my daily driver!
Really enjoyed your review. Here's a subscriber! Looking forward to more content on the P52 as well as other stuff! Do you plan on doing tutorial-type videos on softwares you use?

You can, however if you didn't order an HDD straight from lenovo you'll need to purchase the HDD sled and data cable separately from Lenovo. If you did get a 2.5" drive right off the bat, you can just swap out to an SSD.
@@b1n0ry3 I will sure post my findings on reddit (r/thinkpad), although my machine is not scheduled to arrive before the 11th. The 4K panel on the P72 is non touch (thus matte), which (AFAIK) is not an option on the P52.
I read somewhere you have to buy some extra parts to install a normal 2.5" drive as the computer normally only comes with a M.2 drive preinstalled. Is that true?
You would have to find the sata cable but that's it. I ordered mine with just the lowest end 500GB 2.5 so I would have everything I would need for an SSD upgrade. You can purchase m.2 drive much cheaper if you don't go through lenovo (that's what I did), but I understand not everyone wants to reinstall their OS on a different drive right after purchasing a new computer.
The MSI GT75 8RG will give you better performance due to the shear horsepower of the 1080 compared to the P3200. Not to mention upto an i9 processor. Cooling will be way better on the MSI as well BUT the msi laptop is much much larger, and heavier. I would guess more expensive too? I don't know who makes the panel for the MSI laptop, but if it states 100%RGB, it should be pretty close to the performance of the panel the in Lenovo once properly color calibrated. If you want to use the laptop for gaming and don't mind the larger size go MSI, if you just need something for productivity, photo editing, and video editing go Lenovo. Hope that helps!

Jon, thanks a lot for your P52 review. For the 4k screen, does it support any pens. Did lenovo ship any pen with yours? Have you tried it with pens? Would be very keen on knowing your feedback regarding the pens.
@Jon Soffa, thanks for the awesome video. The teardown was very helpful and your comments throughout provided gems of information (the RAM for example). Could you comment on the _push and pull_ of the two cooling fans? For example do they pull cool air from the sides and bottom and expel the hot air via the back vent? I'm thinking about rigging additional cooling but I don't want to work against the laptop's airflow. Thanks again for the great videos!
Good Question and thanks for the kind words! The fans pull air from underneath the system as well as above (through keyboard where it can), and expels it through the side and rear of the unit.
Hey Jon, just wanted to say thanks for responding to my question! I was planning to have a fan behind the laptop blowing to assist cooling. BUT I realise from your feedback that I will be working against the rear vents and hindering the airflow under the laptop. Seems the only way to provide additional cooling is to put fans directly under the intake... might require some 3D printing here...
@@gividill other option too, is to get a laptop cooler/stand (amazon has a ton of them). That is if you are going to use an external monitor because I think most lift the computer too high. Most have fans underneath that push air upwards into the laptop. This is an option I was looking into. Just need to find the right sized on that directly has fans underneath the heatsink fan intakes on the laptop.
