I think this story pertains to the song “Yeh zulf agar khul jayee toh acha……….”
Here the lyrics seemed to be incomplete as per the Music Director Raviji’s version. He was not able to compile the tune he wanted. He searched for Sahirji,but could trace him. Seeing the desperation on Raviji’s, Rafi Sahib requested him to leave it up to him, which he eventually did, and Rafi sahib illustrated the word “Acha” in different modes as it came along. This is as per his biography written by Sujata Dev. This was also told by Raviji in some interview.

विविध भारती के समक्ष साक्षात्कार में रवि साहब ने बताया था कि काजल का ही एक गीत जो राजकुमार जी पर ही फिल्माया गया है, जिसका जिक्र आपने भी किया ," ये ज़ुल्फ अगर खुलके...", इसमें जब रवि साब रफी साहब को धून समझा रहे थे तो रफी साहब ने हल्के से पूछा, क्या इस में थोड़ा सा मैं भी कुछ जोड सकता हूं ? रफी साहब को कौन ना कहेगा ?रवि साहब ने जब हां कर दी तो रफी साहब उसमें कुछ जोड दिया। यहां तक तो ठीक है,पर रवि साहब आगे बताते हैं की इसमें ८५%लय और धून रफी साहब ने ही तैयार की। आगे जाकर वह गीत भी हीट हों गया ये भी सभी जानते हैं, उस समय की पीढ़ी आज भी गुनगुनाते थकती नहीं।
