Honey Lemon Soda....that manga keep me sane to finish my last year of university. I remrmber reading this on breaks when I didn't work on my final project, my licence. Nursing school was so hard, still I got to graduate and work as a registered nurse. Shojo manga is my guilty pleasure ❤

I’ve really been enjoying the manga “The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today.” It’s about a large cat who takes it upon himself to take care of the housework to support his human, an office worker, so she can keep bringing home money for cat food! It’s hilarious and heartwarming. I highly recommend it! An anime is supposed to air in July.

Have you read Children of the Whales Colleen? I think it’s probably the most underrated current, ongoing Shojo which is a shame given Shoujo's current state. It would have been a great way to pull in more fans. On the bright side, it's almost complete and a quick read.

I have Mermaid Scales and The Town of Sand on my shelf waiting to be read right now. I picked it up because I loved the art style and the Ponyo vibes. I’m glad to hear that it’s good and lives up to the Ghibli aesthetic. Also the story with the boy in Tokiko’s class-just hearing you describe it made me tear up. I’m definitely not prepared to read the actual manga scene!

I am so thankful for your review of Mermaid Scales you cannot even imagine!! Sorry for talking about personal stuff here, but this manga means a lot to me, especially now. [TW: death, s*icide]
You see, yesterday I was on a funeral of my cousin who was only 15. I don't want to go into details, but the reason that he stated in his letter was the pain from dysphoria and the fact that he could not turn back time and get his childhood in his proper body. The moment that my uncle told me about those sorrow events was the first moment that I heard that he was trans and a fellow lgbt+ person and generally it just saddened me that lately we never could catch ourselves up, bc I was in med school in another city. When he was younger we played a lot though, and I considered him my fav cousin.
The last time I saw him irl was 2 years ago. At that age it's obviously a lot of time. It was his birthday and I wanted to spark some interest in manga & anime in him. So I went to manga store and I had a really hard time choosing a good story that will interest him, would be a short series, won't make me look like a source of depravation and it won't scare the parents so they could buy him other mangas (FYI in my country some conservative Catholics sometimes like to spread "satanic panic" when it comes to manga, anime and video games; 95% ppl think of them as freaks, but overprotective parents can be especially susceptible to this esp if they page through manga and see some weird stuff - been there, seen that). And when I took all these factors into consideration there was not much left. I was mostly thinking about Yon&Mu Cat's Diary by Junji Ito, because he loved cats and it was probably the funniest cat manga I've ever read, but then I thought: what if he discovers other works by Junji? Or *worse*: what if his parents discover other Ito's works? So the cashier brought my attention to "Mermaid Scales..." it had a lovely ghibili vibe and honestly I fell in love with its story and dreamy style, so despite worrying it would be too boring or slow for him I went with it. He LOVED it, and it sparked his long interest in Japanese culture. I couldn't wait for the moment we could finally meet up and talk about our common interests. Unfortunately it never came.
After all these years I forgot the name of this manga and the details of this whole situation; it was only brought up bc I spoke to his close friend at his funeral, so I could do the bare minimum and get to know his name and pronouns (the whole family is obviously constantly deadnaming him and the funeral was a festival of a deadname and it just sat wrong with me). So after a funeral I went on the internet to search for the title of this manga, remembering only the slow ghibili melancholic atmosphere, cute art style, mermaids and the vaguely marine title. Found it after 3 hours. Now, I go on youtube and what do I see? Your video. Maybe it's silly, but this coincidence gave me a lot in this hard time. Thank you!

Love hearing you talk about a variety of series and genres-- you honestly inspire me to strengthen and improve my Reader's Advisory game working at my local library! I often struggle with finding the right balance of appeal factors to use when recommending series to patrons, so I use your works as an example of how to get that passion across in a more informative manner. :) Mermaid Scales was peak cozy Ghibli vibes; hope we get more of the authors' works in English soon. And more English josei in general. So happy Vertical is publishing another Kyoko Okazaki title this summer! And you've sold me on trying out My Home Hero.

Haven’t been reading too much the past couple weeks since I was focusing on wrapping up Winter anime seasonal and checking out Spring premieres, but some of them include:
    - Mermaid Scales & the Town of Sand (“Cozy” really hits the nail on the head & I also loved the more simplistic art for this type of tale. Could see this making a really lovely film adaptation esp if a director like Naoko Yamada or a relative newcomer like Yutaro Kubo adapted it with their own directorial style).
    - Loving Yamada-kun at Lv 999 (Checked this out due to the anime PV and I thought it was pretty cute! We’re introduced to the FL at a low point for her, but overall I love her attitude and the series never seemed to unnecessarily draw out certain story elements that could have easily been).
    - Burn the House Down (Haven’t caught up yet and don't need to say too much since it was covered in a previous video, but it definitely hooked me early on and can’t wait to see where it goes)
    - Plus some of the latter volumes of Maison Ikkoku & Children of the Whales that I've bought over the last couple month.

Yesterday i started looking into the reprise of the spear hero again. It's a spinoff of the shield hero series after the Spear hero goes bananas in the main story. It is extremela dumb but also very funny. I have not gotten into new manga this year but I did get the first 2 volumes of Fabiniku even though I already watched the anime. It is very funny. I also finally really started my 86 collection of Novels. Haven't read those yet, because I am still stuck at Spirit chronicles. I need to read more. But I also haven't finished my current games yet. Being lazy and easily distracted is hard.

My Home Hero sound amazing even though it’s outside of my usual genres.
Speaking of yakuza… curious if you have Yakuza Fiancé on your radar? It has similar vibes to Love and Heart and also similar-ish to Love of Kill, in terms of pacing and action. I finished both volumes in a rush then had to immediately re-read them, and am currently dying for volume 3 😅 so I highly recommend!
