Hey Cuz! When UA-cam's creepy algorithms say where Evelyn goes, ye shall follow and suggests "Say It Loud." I'm here for it! Azie ended the first video saying, "Black culture is American culture." Would love more videos driving home the important role we have played (and continue to play) in influencing American culture. Mainstream society will have Black people thinking they are degenerates while they appropriate elements of our culture, so yes we celebrate all of the Black Girl Magic, Black Boy Joy and Black Pride as reminders of our greatness when others will have us believe we are less than! There's a feeling of tokenism (for me) with celebrating BHM. Would love this as a platform for showing what it looks like to celebrate Black culture everyday through books, music, food, etc.

Excellent job, ladies and bravo to PBS for being bold and showing the importance of celebrating everyone! Loving yourself, culture, community, and your heritage is not racism - especially when others have tried to destroy it over centuries. It's about having balance. Loving your culture and your race is not insulting other cultures. No race or culture is better than another.

As an African immigrant, I can tell through a history of war that the cause of war is always division, knowing exactly who your tribe is and who isn’t your tribe creates a visible division between countrymen, creating internal wars and domestic terrorist attacks. Race divides, it is better to look at what unites us than what divides us, that being said there is nothing wrong with loving your race and ethnicity as long as you love people more. If we could embrace our humanity, and love people first before loving our ethnicity, maybe less wars will be started and more lives will be saved. Also don’t get so self absorbed with one’s culture that you don’t recognize and admire other cultures, other people.

    • @honestfriend767
      @honestfriend767 5 років тому +2

Nathan Tompson I heard about what is happening to the whites there, again another example of race and ethnicity dividing a country and people returning violence with violence, the endless cycle of war. I wish we would all listen to Martin “I have a dream that one day right there in Alabama little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” Why can’t we end the war with love for each other and friendship that knows no distinction between races.

Your culture is not your race. Black people in other parts of the world have nothing to do with African-Americans and African-Americans have nothing to do with them. Your culture is American, African-American to be specific. But you also live with culture since whites are the dominant group in the USA.

  • @ceres090

To me, black pride is expressing your joy and standing up for the rights of your people and others, in spite of the consequences. I think of those whose lives and careers were ruined for as little as a fist in the air, or joining with other communities to feed hungry children in the city. I think of the young mother who was arrested at a black lives matter protest. I think of how they fight for change and risk it all to say we too deserve rights and protections. I think of how this country makes it just shy of illegal to be proud of who you are, and how these people rise above the onslaught of negative imagery and taboo. I think of them, and say to myself, I can be brave too. I think of them, look at my skin, and smile.

Loving it! Congrats internet cousin, Azie nice to meet you, and great job to the Say It Loud gang.
Would you guys consider doing an episode of blacks in science fiction since Azie threw up the Vulcan live long and prosper? And not just Nichelle Nichols and her connection to MLK Jr., but like Octavia Butler or more recent Tomi Adeyemi. Also the intersectionality of black identity in the US. Ya'll hit on it with the cheering for everybody black but...maybe from a historical perspective? Giving up or holding onto your first culture, like Arthur Schomburg, to assimilate as a black American.

Good lord, it’s been three days, this *really* needs more views. Let’s not lose you two’s valuable voices to the UA-cam machine!
I think, as a white boi myself, I’m more inclined to default to you two’s opinion on the matter as people who not only feel that pride themselves, but understand why you feel it and why it’s necessary. I think the point that black American are an ethnicity as well as a race due to the forced distillation of disparate cultures into a single conglomerate is a really interesting point because despite what the far-right would say, there hasn’t really been anything like that to that scale of deliberation and magnitude done to white people; there’s still many areas in the US that serve as hubs for people of a singular “white” ethnicity as much as there is a mix of ethnicities, not to mention the general cultures of certain regions, certain environments, even specific cities, and even specific sections of those cities. And yet, there is a small yet powerful group gaining traction within the US that seeks to reduce all that to a singular idea of culture to hold all white people and exclude everyone else. Black culture, at least from my perspective, isn’t singular so much as it is united, and “white” culture isn’t even that, so to reduce either down to such a small dichotomy for the purposes of exclusion and bigotry... It’s really telling when someone says “white pride”. “Southern pride” sounds moronic and you’ll hear it echoed from the same people more often than not, but it can communicate the idea of an actual culture (bear in mind, a culture that’s still bawling and bawking over the Civil War); “white pride” is just degenerative, it says nothing to power because, well, we _have_ power, it’s not pride against shame, it’s just dangerous self-flagellation.

As a white person I’ll never understand black pride fully because I haven’t experienced life as a black person. I didn’t realize how little I knew though until my brother and I moved in with a black husband and wife. Before then I didn’t know that your race made a difference in whether people were willing to take foster kids in. I remember hours of calls sitting in Macdonalds with our social worker kept asking if people were willing to take two Japanese kids. We’re only half Japanese but the social worker kept saying Japanese kids Japanese kids and when I asked her way she said that some foster parents won’t take in kids of certain races.... I was Naïve enough to assume it didn’t matter anymore. Living with them was eye opening because I watched them face racism frequently. they were interior designers who had the skills to design, install and build or sew all their pieces. They told their clients that they had a carpenter and a seamstress because people would try to pay them less or assume they didn’t know what they were doing because they downgraded them to no more than black laborers or something. Not that my opinion makes much of a difference but I think it’s awesome they can do both! And the dad used to be a high level stock broker in New York until someone screwed him over and he took a big hit in one of the recessions of the early 2000’s. I remember the dad getting really angry when he found out that I was being called a nigger at school because I lived with them. I mean I was upset but as a Christian I was more upset as being called a witch. They were proud of their blackness and their Jamaican culture and were always open to educate me and my brother and answer any questions we had. They were proud of their blackness though they understood how society views blackness and adapted accordingly based on the situation. For example they talked differently at home than when working with clients. To me as a random white person they showed black pride. Interesting random fact! They were also Jewish and proud to be Jewish! They were really in your face about the Jewish thing sometimes. Lol.

Iam a Brazilian from the most African influenced culture State in Brazil and I remember saying on TV in the 70's about the Black is Beautiful slogan. I was in my early teens and in my innocence I thought " What they don't Know?" . I didn't realise then that how lucky I was to be raised in a household were my parents were so proud of their parents and their stories. The difference was that we learned in school the influence in our food, in our language, religion and behaviour from the mixture of people (native Indians, slaves and the Portuguese) that made our country.
I had heard also stories of many ways that my father heard racists comments bad knowing that never made me feel ugly or inferior, exactly the opposite, it made me feel stronger to acknowledge what my ancestors survived.
We are the Survivors of the Fittest! and that is everything to be Black and Proud!
    AXE!

First off huge "THANKS" ladies for the content you are producing. I am really enjoying the questions and answers you are giving us. We are seen so much as a monolith that showing that there are differences in thoughts, actions, beliefs, and all things otherwise is so helpful. I think that black pride is just as important today as ever; we still live in a world where we are told that we are not good enough on many levels and the generations following us need to know that they are smart, beautiful, creative, worthy and deserving of love and admiration. Things are not what they used to be but they are still not what they could be. By lifting each other up we are actively turning the tide on the hatred and self degradation that has been done to us as a whole.

I think that a pride movement is important and relevant for any group of people that are commonly expected to apologize and defend themselves for simply existing.

Black pride is more important to me today than ever because I'm a mother and I have school age children. When I learned that the minimum Big 3 historical black figures weren't being taught in school (MLK, Rosa/Harriet, Thurgood) I knew I had to take matters into my own hands and educate my children beyond the surface curriculum even more than I already was.

I am a cis white woman from Germany and I found this very insightful. I shall now go and binge a few episodes. I’m currently reading ‚This will be my undoing‘ by Morgan Jerkins and to other white folks reading this, who want to educate themselves: I can highly recommend that book.

Please do a black Twitter episode. I love this episode!!! Absolutely black pride is necessary today. Seeing more of us in our natural hair glory and having family time as we do is so encouraging that we are moving in somewhat of the right direction. Please keep it up. I'm subscribing to everything "Say it Loud"!!!😁😁😁

I agree! #BlackPride is all about celebrating the beautiful things that make black people unique! I grew up hating my kinky-curly hair, because it was not socially accepted like my white friend's straight hair. However, today, as someone who's consistently rockin my natural fro, i make it a point to love on black women of all ages and their hair ! 🖤🖤🖤

At my school I was working on a poster project where we would put things that are important to us on it and I wrote #blacklivesmatter. I'm white and my school was predominantly white and this white girl and lightskin boy said to me I shouldn't write it because it's offensive to people and should rather write #alllivesmatter . This really upset me and still effects me to this day why do people refuse to let black people celebrate themselves??? I explained to them it wasn't negative in any way , rather it's celebrating success of black people even so All the white kids were against me I just wish I could've done something more. I'm glad y'all made this video I hope it helps to educate ignorant people like I can't thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️this has given me more knowledge so hopefully I can successfully educate more people in the future . One love ❤️
