  • ABOUT THIS VIDEO
    If most people intend to live the simple life in Slab City, eschewing a world of material things, there are a few who push the envelope of ingenuity to create for themselves a home with all the comforts of many a "normal" home. Ryan, Peter, and Jessie are three such people. In the inhospitable desert of Slab City, they have engineered themselves a homestead that is simply beyond belief. In this video, I was honored to have Ryan, who calls himself a "pretendgeneer," was gracious enough to let me tour their homestead. Inside a large hand constructed shed, they have hydroponic, evaporative cooling and lighting systems to rival anything in the on grid world. They define ingenuity in every sense of the word. They are even in the process of digging a cool storage root cellar. Jessie also showed me some mind-blowing macrame she does to earn extra money.

    ME & MY TRAVEL VAN, LITTLE RASCAL
    I am a transgender gal living in Northern California, and I have developed a passion for travel, especially cheap travel. Living in a small van allows me to travel very economically. I save quite a bit of money not having to stay in hotels. In addition, my van gets great gas mileage so California's high gas prices are not too much of a concern. I do my travels in a 2016 Ram Promaster City Van, "Little Rascal," a vehicle I am gradually fitting out for comfortable travels and boondocking.
    MY RV BACKGROUND: WHAT I OWNED
    This is my third travel recreational vehicle. I previously owned a 1974 GMC motorhome, a 1988 Coachman class B camper van, and my current van, a 2017 Ram Promaster City. I named it Little Rascal because It is small, like me. I purchased it used, in mid 2017, with 20,000 miles on it to support my travels and adventures on UA-cam. I did some initial remodeling in September 2017, then used it for short, overnight, travels. With my friend, in the late winter of 2017, we traveled over 7,600 miles back and forth across the US in the van. In the summer of 2019 I traveled to the Upper Midwest, Canada, and Mexico, gaining additional experience and learning more about van life and living as a nomad. I deemed the van not comfortable enough for boondocking, though, and used cheap hotels. As time went by I picked up many tips from RV guru Bob Wells and his UA-cam channel, CheapRvliving, on how to live simply and comfortably in small spaces. I recommend his UA-cam channel if you think the nomad life is appealing.

      We don't worry about rolling blackouts or food shortages. We have air conditioning, running water, flushing toilets, refrigerators, a chest freezer, solar backup, supermarkets, minutes away, etc etc etc.

      @@fckjb284 I was wondering about rolling blackouts...I have never experienced them here in SE USA, but we have been warned by our electric co-op that it may happen. It hurt my heart for some people from those 2 states who spoke about rolling blackouts during an intense temperature spike last summer. I was wonderng how it works.

    I don't mean this to be a negative comment but something you did not mention is the trouble that goes on in Slab City. It's full of drug addicts and tweekers. They come at night to steal things and if they don't like you, they burn down your homestead. It's common out there for camps to be burned down at night or when left. The fire department doesn't respond due to so many calls. There are people there with only a mattress to sleep on. They constantly go around to mooch and steal from other people there and if you don't give them anything, they come back and burn you down or steal things. I'm sure this guy has to guard his camp 24/7. When newbies come to visit Slab City to be cool and hang out with the homeless, they get drugged and then raped and robbed. It's true, look it up. There's a lot of bad stuff that happens out there. I'm just giving fair warning to anyone watching this and thinking it's some sort of utopia. Be careful.

    • @RabbitSide
      @RabbitSide 3 роки тому +6

      A lot of what you say is true, except you’re a bit off with the fire stuff. Lots of camps burn down out here but 90% of those are accidental. Intentional camp burning is usually thief vs thief. The fire department will absolutely respond to all calls. They’re out here at every fire we see.
      Other than that fire stuff, you’re right though. There is a lot of meth out here and because of that, a lot of theft. We’ve been out here for about 5 years and don’t have any problems. We don’t need to fend off thieves and can go out and do stuff without worry.
      If you hang out with bad people and do bad stuff, bad things may happen to you. Stick to yourself and don’t just trust everybody, and you can be fine. I think the reality of the place is right between the “slab city is hell!” And “slab city is heaven!” Videos lol

      Don't try to minimize how dangerous that "city" is. Tweakers, criminals, mentally ill homicidal misfits and arsonists is the MAJORITY of that "city". I always get a laugh reading the comments on Slab City videos...so many gullible people that think it's nirvana.😂😂😂💣🌡🌡🌡🔥 🔥

    I was wondering what everyone does with their human waste, there was one video i watched said they used a bucket, but what happens after that bucket is full? it will only hold so much.

    • @RabbitSide
      @RabbitSide 3 роки тому +4

      We’ve dug a very deep “septic”!tank that our trailer’s black tank empties into. It’s near full but there is a tree planted next to it that is growing very fast!! We will soon stop using that hole and instead dig smaller diameter holes next to other trees in our gardens. We have a caddy on wheels for emptying the black tank and we will then empty that into the smaller septic hole in the garden. It’ll have a lid and vent pipe. Once it’s full we move to another hole and repeat the process. That way the waste going into the ground can be used up by our trees.
      As for the bucket thing, you’re supposed to then set that aside and start using another bucket. After some time the waste breaks down into “humanure” and it’s usable for compost. The bucket method isn’t very sanitary and there are other methods that are better. Look up “the humanure handbook” for more on composting human waste. We are fans of the “clivus multrum” design.

      @@rosieokelly OK. How often do you need to do that? Your misting system seems like it is dual purpose. Simultaneously cooling the air, and keeping the dust down. BTW, I was wondering if you had ever considered growing Duckweed in your fish pond. It is not only a favorite food for fish and chickens, but is a plant high in Omega 3 fatty acids. Innovative agriculture ROCKS, and you are definitely in a place wide open for creative experimentation.

    That place was probably the best Homestead ive seen, outside of the East Jesus place.
    Theres a romanticism with the Slabs that i see in all of the YT content, as well as some Docs about them and Nomad life. It strikes this thing with ppl, some to break away from the paycheck cycle, and others to make something out of nothing. But, as others say and plenty of content to see, its a Homeless camp. A video i saw recently talked about going to the Range and not being able to smoke cuz ya get hounded.
    Id do a drive by, and i had a moment where i thought itd be cool to make a go of it. But its just like anywhere else, except a lot more crazy, from what i have seen.

    Good grief, you interrupt the guy every time he opens his mouth. You ask a question, he starts to answer and you can't hear the answer, because you quite simply wont shut up.
    Reminds me of new guys at work that know nothing and when you try to explain it to them they just keep talking like they already know the answer. Ill actually stop talking, look at them until they stop and then say " are you finished? You wanna learn now?".
    This guy Ryan is absolutely amazing. That place he has put together makes me so damn jealous. Jealous in a good way. Not envious, just jealous.

    This video would've been so much better if the camera man would've just let Rabbit give a tour! He keeps talking over Rabbit which I find to be super annoying. I didn't 3ven wanna watch it after a while cuz I didn't wanna give him a view but Rabbits place is so cool I like watching videos about it.
