  • I’ve been learning a lot about how to incorporate personal style into my historical clothing. Although I’m by no means an expert, here are a couple of my personal style tips to help you make and own historical clothing that you really love that suits your personal style. These are just some things to think about when you’re choosing your next big historical costuming sewing project!

    THRIFTED. KING SIZE DUVET, SHEETS,AND PILLOWCASES. 😎
    SOOOO much yardage bc its soo much wider, and typically more neutral patterns/colors. Plus like..really high quality linen, cotton, less than $10 typically.

    I really like the comment of wearing what you would have worn if you had lived in that era.

    Good call on the colours. Most of my wardrobe is black or grey but I never make black or grey historical clothing. Think I’ll try that next and see if I wear it more.

      . . . yeah, that one was very on point. whatever historical or not, I am often drawen to beautiful fabrics or styles that I just would not wear or do not fit what I need. intrinsic floral prints on white would go so perfectly as a 18th century dress . . . but I do not wear white, or bright color, no matter how pretty it looks, it just does not suit me. Or deep red tones, they worked well with my natural color, but I dyed my hair with henna and now it clashes terribly . . . for 6 years now and I still reach for that specific color.
      I adore fall colors . . . but am naturaly a cold typ and aside from my hair they most often do not work for me.
      My colorpalate shifted from mostly black, some navy blue and a bit of olive green and the red as a teen to lots of dark, often desaturated blues, black and variations of teal, which gets to be the most vibrant. Since the henna I also wear some dark browns and greens, as well as light gray.
      what looks apealing and what one would actualy wear really is not the same.

    Thank you for this sage advice and I think you are spot-on with every point. Oh, and I must make that velvet vest you are wearing!

    This was extreamly helpful, thank you!
    Oh, I noticed the color thing so much. When Fabric shopping I often get drawen to way more vibrant, bright and boldly patterned fabrics, than I would actualy wear.
    I would only add "Do not buy fabrics you do not knowwhat specificly to dow with" as a side note. It ties into the dont buy if when it is cheap point. The thing is, even if it is exactly your color and styl and all, I you do not know what to do with it, it is just as much a waste, if you get an idea later you might find you bought way to little or much . . . it is just sad.
    And mybe, do not start with an elaborate piece that does not combine well, but something simple to make (like a skirt or petticoat) and versatile enough that you get good use out if it even before you built your whole weardrobe.
    Even if you absolutly would wear the famouse AD cape with the weardrobe, it is not the ideal starting piece if it does not mash well with anything you own now and thats frustraiting.

    I really love that -- Wear what you would have worn in the era. Love your outfit. Have we seen that skirt before? I'm thinking not.

    As a beginner history bounder and a minimalist I'm going very slowly. I have had a capsule wardrobe for years and I love it so I'm not willing to completely give that up. In the beginning, well, I'm still a beginner, I wasn't even sure that history bounding was for me because I adore my black jeans, it's all I wear, but I absolutely love the Edwardian era so how could I merge those two and be happy? So far I've purchased several lace jackets and lace tops that work very well with my black jeans. I've also been experimenting with the traditional Gibson Girl hair updos when I wear my lacy shirts. I found some lovely cameo jewelry and am even hand sewing a lacy reticule in cream and black to coordinate with everything. I can history bound in my black jeans and I feel confident and beautiful.

      Oh I love the idea of a historical capsule wardrobe! If I were you I would focus on accessories. The same plain Gibson blouse + walking skirt is going to look really different with a bow tie vs a statement belt.

    • @sarahferguson0
      @sarahferguson0 2 роки тому +4

      @@thesewloartist yes! And speaking of belts, my teenager is heavily into costume design and found me a wonderful belt that I've been wearing. He also showed me how belt placement really makes a difference. Like, in the later Edwardian era women wore their belts higher on their waistlines vs at their natural waist. He showed me some pictures and I can really see the difference that it makes. Also those early Edwardian belts with that point vs later belts. Now when I'm thrifting I'm always on the lookout for belts that will give me that vibe. So far I haven't had any luck but the search is half the fun!

    Great video! Helpful and interesting :) I have what I hope comes across as constructive criticism rather than hate though. My intent is to be helpful, not hurtful. The background music was really distracting. I thought that might be helpful to know for future videos so thought I'd mention it. Really appreciate your thoughts on inserting your own style into historical outfits though. I've been playing with this a little bit over the past year too and it's always nice to see/hear what others are doing :)

      Wow, I went back and took a look at this video after uploading it, and the music is terrible! When I was editing it, it was so subtle you almost couldn't hear it, but I see exactly what you mean. Yikes!

    The cape cult as a trend...I like prints, I just dont like floral prints. It always looks like wallpaper and my grandma's upholstery to me.

    • @thesewloartist
      @thesewloartist  3 роки тому +10

      Oh my god, I can’t believe I didn’t think to mention the cape cult! So true. I totally got sucked into making one and it doesn’t really fit over the puffy sleeves I usually wear, so I probably shouldn’t have made it. I’m definitely handing out a lot of advice I don’t personally follow in this video 😂

      @@thesewloartist it's an oldie but goodie! I may try it one day, but I just dont think it will flatter my shape.

      Haha the cape cult! I've been intending to make one just so other historical costumers could recognize me in public, but I don't know if I will ever get around to doing it!

    • @SingingSealRiana

      that cape is awesome, but if it does not fit your weardrobe . . . I think of makeing it once I got enough basic stuff to combine it with, with the cloths I got now i would not wear it . . . also I wuld want to make it out of fabric way to expensiv for me at the moment ^^
