    With current markups in my area, the Outlander PHEV is running about $18,000 less than a Rav4 Prime!
    Makes the Mitsubishi look a good value.

      RAV4 prime has a 2-3 wait time in my area. They'll gladly take your cash to get on the wait list though.

    I have one for a month now and have still not visited a gas station. I have a level 2 charger i installed myself as im an electrician and we have cheap Hydro elecricity rates at home. I can top up at work for free. Its not for everyone, but when our gas gets to $2.30/L hell yeah

You dont just show the obvious, like interior, exterior, but you also provide comparisons to other vehicles, very well. Layout and format of the vid is excellent. Again, very very good review!

    Had my 23 outlander phev 2 months now. I found the same as you with full battery and Regen starting the engine.... But if I start in forced ev mode and the innovative pedal on.. the Regen starts working quite quickly after a few kms of driving (confirmed by the Regen dial on the cluster) it uses the friction brakes up until it has the room for recharge and I can snag a few ex kms of Regen per trip. Vs having to figure out when I can use B5 on the paddles without the engine kicking ion

    Wondering if off-grid users of this PHEV could extend use of home batteries by plugging in the PHEV 1500 watt outlet to recharge them, useful for long dreary weather spells?

    why no comments about the remote control via App? e. g. is there a on-demand control for (pre) air conditioning / heating? is it cloud based or still only via wireless LAN connection diretly to the car (which means, you have to be near the car)

    You didn't talk about fuel economy when operation in tarmac mode, charge and save combinations. Normal is strictly hybrid mode using battery power and engine when battery is depleted. But what aboutvdrininy at 100 kph in tarmac mode? Also what about when in parallel mode and the engine is directly connected to the generator and running the car versus the battery running the car as in normal series hybrid mode. How does the power mode affect fuel economy when driving sanely?

    Honda Clarity PHEV owner here. From a niche owner standpoint, I really like the concept & vision Mitsubishi has with the Outlander PHEV: larger vehicle, increased road capacity with the AWD setup, and still enough electric power for daily commuting. Fuel should be improved on, but I would love to transition from my Clarity to this.

    Thanks for these reviews Alex. An interesting car. I find getting a feel for fuel consumption difficult with PHEVs as like you say the mpg is quoted just for the fuel used with no value given for the power used to charge the car. I’d find a total dollar value for a trip a more useful metrics. I know fuel costs and electricity costs can vary but if you can use the same input costs for the same trip to get a dollar value to compare cars, I’d find that more relevant, or at least another metric to consider

      The dollar value will vary widely based on your fuel prices (gasoline and electrical).

      @@afcgeo882 Yes agreed but my point was that if Alex had a table recording the fuel consumption and electricity consumption of PHEvs tested on a consistent test route then he could enter the same fuel and electricity cost to get a comparable dollar value that would be more meaningful than the quoted PHEV fuel use number that is meaningless. Viewers could also use that table with the mpg and electricity usage to enter our their own local fuel and electricity costs so we could get a comparison that is relevant to us. I just find the advertised PHEV fuel usage absolutely meaningless and not comparable to anything.

      @@therealjeffg I guess he could make up some numbers, but gasoline costs vary from day to day and he lives off the grid, so he doesn’t pay for electricity. It would be a big burden.
      Plus, while that would provide a comparison on fuel efficiency, it wouldn’t be applicable to anyone else as they’d have very different maths applied.
      For example, my electrical cost is 23 cents per kWh, but my gasoline prices are fairly average. In CA, you can get electricity for as little as 13 cents per kWh, but the gasoline prices are much higher.
      That changes the equation.

      Biggest problem with assigning a value to electric charging is that there is a MASSIVE price difference between charging on the road at charging stations where its often very expensive, and charging at home which can be really cheap.

      @@BoopSnoot There is a MASSIVE discrepancy in home electric rates as well. As of February 2023, rates varied between 10.35 ¢ per kWh (Idaho) to 28.38 ¢ (California).

    Do you know the Outland PHEV is part of the Federal Tax credit ? I see that Japan is considered a free trading partner when you check the EV tax credit gov website.

    Nice enough vehicle but some weird design choices. Almost like they had 2 or 3 design teams working with different subsets of their design requirements and didn't begin to work on integrating them until the subteams were mostly done.

      I look at the Outlander and don't see much in the way of design at all. I see a Nissan Rogue body that's received a questionable from fascia that was probably drawn on a napkin around 11pm one night after someone at Mitsubishi had drunk several litres of sake.

      @@tjs114 My comments weren't intended to address the exterior design. Such design choices involve aesthetic considerations to a much greater degree, and functional constraints to a considerably lesser degree, than other aspect's of a vehicle's design, and I don't see the point of arguments that depend largely on aesthetics. _De gustibus_, as the saying goes. You can argue all day about the looks of the car and just end up agreeing to disagree.
      The 'weird design choices' I was referring to involve the car's functionality: the way the hybrid system works, especially how the car integrates its electric and ICE drive systems; its battery/regen management; the choice to combine a large battery and a low-capacity Lv 2 charging subsystem; the way F/R power splits are managed; the decision to put a third row in while still staying within certain dimensional constraints, etc.
      There are things about the overall *functional* design that seem to suggest that the people in charge of different elements of the overall design didn't have mutually consistent objectives, or that little to no work was done to integrate the final design into something coherent. That's what seems weird to me.

      @@MLHunt I think what really happened is they are trying to integrate the last gen version of the Outlander PHEV into the new Rogue platform as cheaply as possible. That's probably why it has a Chademo connector, for instnace.

      0-60MPH is 6.5 seconds tested by MotorTrend, Alex said that he got 6.8 seconds which is similar to MotorWeek.

    Love this car especially as I am able to run my home or shop when we have planned blackouts.. from the battery.. however where I live fly the kiddies seats at back an give me a spare wheel rather

    I'd rather see 6 5'5 people in this than 1 5'5 person in a relatively giant Camry, even though there are already too many CUVs out there.
    Shout out Ava Max and the tonneau cover really should've been magnets instead of hook and loop.

    My guess is that the big selling point on this as a PHEV is that it has 3 rows. For me the RAV4 Prime is better because it’s more efficient and has more horsepower in hybrid mode, similar horsepower in EV mode and goes farther on a charge with a smaller battery. But this car seems good for what it is. I had an argument with a coworker about how the MPG works on a plugin hybrid. I couldn’t convince him that it acts as if the electricity it free so it’s not MPGe. I have my Prime set so the it shows the MPG for each separate trip. So on a long trip once I run out of EV range, I know that it will show accurate hybrid gas mileage after my first stop.

      The Alex on autos channels has detailed videos with Chrysler Pacifica PHEV showing that electricity is calculated in conjunction with gasoline displaying real MPGe even driving only in EV mode. Alex specifically singles that vehicle for coopting the electric energy and gasoline to give a real world MPGe.
      On contrast Chevrolet Volt considers electricity free discounting its use. All PHEVs fall somewhere between these two extremes in calculating MPGe.

      ​@@chezzyperson3339depends. Sorento PHEV has a $5-8K dealer markup (ridiculous). So, there's advantage one for Outlander.
      Sorento has a little more room 3rd row...a good selling point if you're using 3rd row often. If not, it's a wash.
      Outlander has a heat pump, which means no gas engine needed for heat or A/C....Sorento must run the engine for either, so if you live in a hot climate or cold winters, Sorento is running the gas engine much more often.
      Outlander has better AWD. Not a big deal if you don't get off the roads, but if you do...big bonus for Outlander.

    They did such a great job on this SUV for the most part... but holy that tonneau cover is whacky. And the main screen is kind of half hearted. And this convoluted hybrid set up.
    I don't understand why the OEMs don't follow the BMW i3 REX approach to PHEV tech. Make the petrol engine a very small, light engine that acts like a generator only. The drivetrain should be fully EV. It just seems like the i3 fails in that they only gave the gas engine a tiny fuel tank.

      Fuel efficiency in the i3 system is very poor, and the engine is not intended to be run continuously. I3 was a much smaller car with worst fuel economies than almost all phev except the outlander.

      Also going up a steep hill, the REX could only muster 45mph. It relied on the bottom end of the pack for buffer, but if that ran out, things got pretty dire

      Because that only works if you use a small Diesel engine. Thermal efficiency of ICE engines is poor, so a gasoline engine will have to be on a lot of the time and at high RPMs just to provide charging power. Electric motors, on the other hand, suck at highway speeds.

      That’s the difference between a PHEV and an i3 Rex. The Rex is a 100% EV with a generator designed to limp you to the next charging station. PHEVs are hybrids with large pluggable batteries that have more flexibility in their energy usage. The distinction is especially important for tax purposes.

    Good review as usual. What is the cost difference between the total ICE Outlander vs. Hybrid Outlander? Most people probably do not have 240 V in their garages and it’s not cheap to have a 240V receptacle installed by a licensed contractor (of course, cost varies based on where the electrical utility entry is in the home. Still not a viable option for people who have to park on the street or living in apartment buildings (most don’t have outdoor receptacles). I’m still not sold on EV’s at the present time. Fuel cost have be inflated by political decisions and their is environmental and human health impacts for making batteries that is being totally ignored. Refined oil (gasoline and diesel) still has the biggest energy capacity per volume and weight. The cost of vehicles has risen dramatically with the gov’t mandates toward electricity and tax incentives for EV’s. Most people cannot afford the extra money to purchase an EV or PHEV because of inflation and gouging by vehicle manufacturers. The higher cost of EV’s is just driving up the cost of ICE vehicles, as well, because dealers know that people cannot afford EV’s.

    Try starting in ev priority by pressing power that ev than power and break for a couple seconds for less engine starts.
    For the hill climb try b2 to b0 (+paddle). That should stop the engine starts.

    I think this model is domed to fail. PHEV buyers are into mpg. This style of hybrid just gives bad MPG when not on a plug every 35 miles.

      Volvo’s 450hp PHEV models are selling hot. If 450hp PHEV can do 27mpg unplugged, a lot buyers are happy.
      This model though, it’s indeed in an awkward position that excels in neither 0-60 nor mpg…

      As a PHEV buyer, PHEVs are less fuel efficient than mild hybrids. If you are actually running on gas during daily driving then it has defeated the purpose

    It must be novel to say you'd get better gas mileage with a Kia. Kia's aren't known for great gas mileage, but they beat this Mitsubishi. I don't know if that shows improvements at Kia or just how inefficient Mitsubishi is across the board.

    Well the concept is there but they're just doing it wrong. Same way the volt did it and how mazda wants to do it, make it strictly an EV and have a gas range extender that has 0 mechanical linkage to the wheels. After the battery gets down to say 15%, or theres more demanded from the electric motors than than battery can provide, it turns on the gas extender to generate more power. But the generator only runs at x rpm for peak efficiency and only goes on/off. And due to the nature of it being a generator it just runs at a constant speed regardless of whats happening with the vehicle, generating a constant stream of power

      This seems so obviously a sensible approach that there must be some reason why the powertrain engineers can't get it to work as a practical matter. BMW and GM both tried it and ultimately abandoned it. Maybe Mazda's rotary range-extender engine will prove to be the third time charm.

      @@MLHunt Europe has had quite a few Diesel hybrids and they’ve all been extremely efficient, but new anti-Diesel laws are killing them.
      The basics are simple: electricity, given its direct drive torque and regenerative braking, are perfect for low speed, log drag driving. Diesels, given their low RPM efficiency, are ideal at highway speeds. Diesel hybrids are just very efficient, even in serial mode, because they harness the advantages of both system, while eliminating disadvantages of both. Gasoline engines, on the other hand, are good at both, but great at neither.

      @@afcgeo882 you reference the 'new anti-diesel laws' as if there isn't isn't a sound scientific basis for regulating the O3, microparticulate, and other problematic emissions diesel engines generate.
      Tetraethyl lead makes petrol engines run at considerably greater levels of efficiency. It's a shame misguided government regulations banned its addition to petrol blends.

    I have a 2017 Chevrolet Volt and it beats this thing on every parameter. I can do 80 MPH in EV mode and I get 55 miles on a charge. At 85,000 miles, the Volt is going strong. This and other newer PHEVs have too many caveats to be in pure EV modes.

      Your Volt is a much smaller car, I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t more efficient given that your car weighs a good 1,200 lbs less than the Outlander PHEV. That’s like bragging about how the Outlander can carry more passengers and their cargo than your Volt. Well duh.

      Your rooting for your own demise. Fully electric vehicles are going to destroy the planet. Where are we getting all of this lithium? Where is the electricity coming from? Range anxiety, no thanks. Oh and fully electric vehicles, next pandemic the government will switch all cars off. Miss a payment, you can't go anywhere. Miss 3, it drives itself back to the dealership. Have a warrent, drives you to the police station. That's where we are heading with fully EVs. Evs will be the downfall of modern civilization.

    Thumbs down! A 26MPG gas car on an EV Channel. Laughably pathetic. I wasn't a fan of the long term F150 Lightning, but at least it was all electric. This video belongs on your regular channel.

      If I owned it I'd probably rarely use gas. It has more EV range than my current PHEV with which I used only a few gallons each year. It's too big for me though.
