  • Will OLD Carrot Seeds Grow? I Took a Risk...
Carrot seeds are expected to be viable for 3 years- after that, their viability is said to drop dramatically. So will seeds that are nearing 6 years old grow?
I took several older packets of carrot seeds that were packed for 17/18 (so harvested in 16/17) and decided to sprout them for viability- if viable, they'd get transplanted out into the garden and grown for delicious fall carrots. I also grew some old beet seeds, too!
The seeds were slow to start, but finally, there were signs of life! At least 50% if not MANY more sprouted, which was more than I'd anticipated! Some of these seeds most definitely endured poor storage conditions, likely sitting on very hot trucks and in hot stockrooms during summer weather. These seeds were not purchased at the original retailer (they came from a liquidation outlet.)
I then transplanted them out into a clay bed, with a little bit of manure tilled in. I did not cultivate them in a way that favors large root growth, and I knew that. I didn't thin- thinning meant more weed competition in the late summer, and I had no time to weed these carrots. They were planted a bit late for the area (they went in around the second week of September) and we had unseasonably cold weather early on- this slowed their growth. Clay produces stubby or malformed carrots, and I always plant more to compensate. As I thin them for eating, the smaller ones will be able to either grow larger, or produce seed in the spring! Win win!
I harvested a good amount of carrots in this video, but no where near all of them. I was leaving big holes and gaps for the remaining carrots to fill in and grow. These were so sweet and delicious, especially after all of the cold weather they've gone through!
As you can see, those old packets produced an excellent carrot patch! There are tons of green carrot tops! So if you have some old carrot seeds hanging around, I recommend pre-sprouting them and giving them a chance!

I really thought I'd have a low germination and that clearly backfired on me 😂 once I finish picking the rest, I'll leave many plants to seed & net them so they don't cross with the wild species!

I have some old carrot seeds too. You have given me a good way to weed out the bad ones. Great video. I am with you now and waiting to see what you do next.
