I feel sad for the older guy. I completely understand him as i feel the same way in any country in Asia. In the past they were much more relaxed on the rules all through out Asia. Thailand and even the Philippines now require a considerable amount of money in a savings account with their government to obtain a residence visa. Mexico also just hiked the monthly allowance you receive in order to obtain a residence visa.
When i visited Goa they did not have the 180 day rule then, and i met lots of British retirees had bought homes in Goa hoping to spend the rest of their lives there. The new rule of 180 days much have been a shock for them. They now have to make a visa run every 9 months.
These folk bring in their money into the country, which is the much needed foreign exchange for the Indian government. It does does not make sense why they would want to stop that?? I have noticed that sometimes the government might get upset about an issue and than retaliate, almost childishly. But it is so cruel to others. Sri Lanka just deported all the Russians and Ukrainians because of what one bar owner did. Just does not seem fair. The sad part is tourism brings in much needed revenue, foreign exchange currency. With that foreign currency the country can buy oil, weapons etc.
i completely understand how he feels with so much uncertainty especially when one is advanced in age. It is not easy for us to just pack up and catch the next flight to another foreign country and hope to return. And then an immigration agent who is having a bad day or does not like you, will try to challenge you on all the times your passport has been stamped. It seems so unfair. They say that with the upcoming elections in India not much is going to change. 😢

Yes, that new rule in India was certainly a shock to many people. I didn't think they'd actually enforce it until some people I knew who went to the border (like Neil) were told about it. It's a big change from the way things used to be, from what I understand. Luckily, I was already planning to stay for less than 6 months, but I've met several people who were forced to leave/change their plans because of it. Not sure why they decided to do that all of a sudden, but possibly it has something to do with the current government, like you said.

That food must have been really good for you to have cleaned your plate! 😅
i feel like crying, i just spent $10 at McDonald's and i regreat every bit of it!! You have all that food for just $3.40. And like i said i ate the cheapest combo sandwiche. I realized that i should have asked for special sandwich as they handed me a sandwich that had been prepared a while back and was just sitting on the shelf. i forced myself to eat it. It was awful.

Haha, yes, food prices in India are so much different than in the US ... and a lot of tasty stuff.
      Ah, too bad about McDonald's!
