- "Jane" by Jefferson Starship off of their "Freedom at Point Zero" album which came out in 1979 and featured David Freidberg on bass.
I got this bass (and recorded this video) back in December, around the time I started working at the home heating oil delivery job. I thought it was only fitting that I post it as I run down the clock at that job. I gave my two weeks notice on Monday and start a new job the week after next. It was a physically demanding job and I was becoming concerned with some of my moving parts wearing out prematurely.
What is harder? Leaving a job that you "like", but where you are beaten like a rented mule? Or, leaving a job that you "don't like", but where you are treated with generosity and respect? For me, it was the latter.
As much as I loathe starting new jobs, meeting new people, and disrupting the status quo, I'm determined to find a job that is a good fit for me during the balance of my working life. Fortunately, the job market is good for CDL drivers.
For whatever reason, this was the bass that got me talking - the Epiphone Thunderbird (I'm not exactly sure which model) through a SansAmp Para-Driver.
Oh, when I'm imitating Lynn, this is pretty much how she talks to me when she asks me a question, except there's a lot more finger waving.
Now that I think about it, does this song even have a chorus?
Odd question: Have you ever considered straying off the record's bass line and improvising something here and there?
Have you seen his Rio cover?
@J Paul After I posted the comment, I immediately figured how awkward it would be if he actually improvised quite often. But alas. I don't get around to watching every cover, be it because the song doesn't interest me or I simply don't get around to. Also I don't know all the original bass lines so I couldn't compare.
Check out his One Thing Leads to Another cover. He throws in this cool improvised line near the end...
Hi Thrano. I pinned your comment because I thought it was interesting. No, I don't often ad-lib or improvise in my covers. On the rare occasion that I do, I will most always make a note of it, unless it is something that I do at the very end of the song, at which point I'm assuming that most people have already tuned out. Since I started my channel I've always tried to play the bass-lines I cover as closely to the way they were recorded as I possibly can. Of course, I'm not perfect, but that's what I strive for and I try to capture as many small details as I can. Sometimes, because I'm a finger-style player, I have to come up with ways to emulate what I'm hearing and I will always put in a disclaimer about that as well. A good example of that would be my "Planet Earth" cover which was played with a pick on the album. I do have a playlist titled "Learned For Live" where I play the songs more like I would in a live situation, without so much attention paid to detail. Some of the people who replied to your comment came up with some pretty good examples of when I stick something of my own in a cover. Thanks and take care!
@@TJH3113 Thank you for the in-depth reply! I get your reasoning, it's player's preference. Personally I try and deviate wherever I think it'd sound neat. Or wherever I lack the skill to adequately play what's on the record.
Keyboards, and bassline kind of remind me of "fantasy" by Aldo Nova.
There was so much great hard rock right around 79 to 83. One of my favorite periods.
Aldo Nova came out three years after Jefferson Starship
I can definitely hear that!
Hold the line by Toto comes to mind as well.
I was thinking it sounded familiar to something, but could not think of what.
That's an awesome introduction.
Tell Linda thanks because we are now covering the song and I always look to my mentor for guidance. :) Great job as usual sir!
Thanks a lot!
Not only a great bassist, but also an awesome husband. You're a good role model Troy. Thanks again for your wonderful work. God bless.
Thanks Shane!
I haven't heard that in forever, such a great song!
I hope you liked it!
You and I have the same mindset to get the details even in the simplest songs. Side question, what foam heads are you using for your masks? The ones I get seem to be just smaller than the mask. Still looking for that perfect base
@@noifcustoms I always believed that the magic was in the details. The masks are mounted on slat wall using brackets made to display sport or motorcycle helmets. They are just stuffed with paper.
No way you rock that was awesome 👏 thanks I'm going to get on that one my wife loves it too
Thanks. Go for it!
Another great yet little known/played track with an awesome bassline. Excellent job, my friend!
Thanks a lot!
Jane is one of my favourites, a great song. Thanks for the bass line!
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it.
A classic. Great choice by your wife and you. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot Rob, I’m glad you liked it.
Never disappointed with any of your bass covers. The Master !
I’m sure I will at some point, but until then, thanks!
You rock my friend. The song does have a chorus. We thank Heaven for the guitar that got you talking. I too am considering a job change.
Thank you Walt! Go for it! Life is too short to stay someplace where you are not happy.
Love that bass and the video. That's one of my all time favorite tunes.
Thanks Todd, I'm glad you liked it!
Jefferson Starship...cool sound and obviously great Mickey voice🔊💯
Thanks Paolo! I'm glad you liked it.
I’m digging that tone!!
Me too! Thanks.
I've loved that song for a long time but I didn't know the name of i. Thank you Lynn for asking Troy to play it. I love it too. Hope you guys are well. Hllo to your mon Troy!. This is a strong spirited song. Thanks Troy and Lynn. Marvine :-)
I'm glad you liked it Marvine. I'll be sure to tell Lynn. Had lunch with Mom yesterday. Did you get my email with the owl pic?
@@TJH3113 I ADORE Thunderbird basses, that thing is beautiful Troy
great song; great job brother...i always assumed the bass mirrored the guitar on that part as well ha
I think so too... and thanks!
Been listening to this song for years on the radio and I don't think I ever knew the name of it was Jane 😄 Enjoyed the listen 👍🏻
I'm curious as to what you might have thought the title was?😂 Thank you David.
@@TJH3113 Honestly, I just had no clue, I only knew that when it came on the radio, I might turn the knob up a little more 👍🏻
Troy, that was brilliant….
Thank you Kim!
I found this last year while taking Bass lessons with School of Rock - you're my bass hero! If I lived near you I'd love to take lessons, but I live in CT - Darn!
Very cool! I'm in New Windsor, NY... 45 minutes from Danbury.
@@TJH3113 I'm in Guilford (east of New Haven). My friend Vivian lives in New Windsor!
Great Job as always Sir !!!
Thank you very much, Scott !!!
You make any bass you play sound great! Awesome, as always!
Very nice of you to say. Thanks!
That's a beautiful Thunderbird. Also one of my favorite Jefferson Starship songs, I liked it even better than we built this city.
Edit: also I wish I would have read the description about certain jobs. I've been a custodian for the past 12 years and the county board where I live. I was a 230 day employee and the new superintendents came in and cut nearly everyone. My wife and I and other custodians were cut back to 205 days. Which means no summer work. I don't want to leave this job and start all over again somewhere else but I don't know what to do. We'll never ever get our days back, I guess we'll have to save back more.
Thanks. I think it's a great bass. I'm glad you liked the song.
Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that you were treated that way by your employer. They really know how to get the least out of people, don't they? I hope you find a solution.
Built This City is technically "Starship", not "Jefferson Starship". It's also been placed on various "worst song ever" lists, which seems a bit unfair considering all the awful stuff that's been released over the years, but I do recall it getting on my nerves back in the day lol.
Very cool 😎. Looking forward to the next video
Thanks 👍
You know what Troy?
I really enjoy you,hit this right away, "Troy speaks again....." lol.
Always do what wife asks,29 years here on Chicago. A lot of nice basses=very nice Wife!
Jim
Haha... thanks! We're at 29 years as well! It will be our 30th in October. Congratulations to you.
Absolutely - Happy Wife = Happy Life
I am in the process of doing this exact song as my next bass cover video and needed help with the reggae bit in the middle so saw that you had done this cover. Thank you so much for the help buddy. I will tag you in the video when I upload it. Cheers sir. ;)
NB I have only just noticed that I commented two years ago below so I had forgotten that I had seen your cover before but it was great to see it again. ;D
Glad I could help!
This man can play anything 🤘
Haha... that's what you think! Thanks for the sentiment though.
@@TJH3113 will you take suggestions for your next song cover?
I always consider suggestions, I don’t often take them though.
Ohhhhhhh yeah we're rocking now 🤘🤘🤘!!
Haha! Thanks!
I'd gotten some Ktel mixed cassette ~1980 and 'Jane' was on it and I've liked the song since.
Right on! They left this one off of "Freedom Rock"!
Another great song choice here, Troy. Always loved this one. I especially loved it when it was used for the opening theme music of the “Wet Hot American Summer” projects. Great playing, as always. And your shtick of being so reluctant to talk never gets old. Ever! Such a treat for UA-cam.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it, Tony! I've never heard of that show. Believe me, it's no shtick. I really do hate to talk.
Love this song! Good job Troy!
Very cool! Thanks a lot.
I've always loved that song and was surprised it wasn't in my music library. It is now! Thanks for another great video!
Glad you liked it!
i dont know why that grunt at 3:00 is cracking me up so much
😂
😆
I was playing the drums when you uploaded so I had a good virtual jam with you 😄
P.S. that bass tone is to die for
Very cool! Thanks Philip.
Love that growl and crunch of the Tbird. Kinda want to get one myself, as to my ears, NOTHING else fills out the bottom rumble like a Thunderbird.
I like it too... and I think these go for around $400 new and, of course, less for a used one? I actually overpaid a bit ($400) for this one, but it came with a really nice case that goes for $130.
Such a great bass line. I love the use of space.
Glad you liked it!
Killer bass tone, Troy!
Thanks!
This song was on the jukebox at my first job. Mountain Mikes pizza, I would play this and Pink Floyd Money every day before I went to work my shift
Awesome!
Quite a classic as always man! You rock!
Thanks again!

Troy, this is great! 😎 Nice to hear this song again, so nicely covered.

Hey, Troy!
Nice job as always.
I don't think I remember this song from before.
Even though I like it.
Seems cool to play.
Thanks!
Hey, thanks!
Great song indeed Troy. Amazing band. Hope you & yours are well.
Thanks!
Something special about that NIKE bass tone.
I think so too!
Another great bassline Troy. It's an interesting song structurally because, arguably, it doesn't have a chorus since there is no lyrical motif that gets repeated. You could argue that its structure is Intro/Verse/Bridge/Verse/Bridge/Mid 8A-Mid8B/Solo/Verse/Outro. I goes to show that you don't need to follow conventional structures to write a great song.
Thanks. So, it really doesn't have a chorus then? I wonder how many songs like that there are?
@@TJH3113 It doesn't really have a chorus. It's structure is more based on tension and release in the way that it ascends to the harmonically to B in each section and then drops away from it. But there are lots of songs that don't have choruses - frequently narrative songs where a chorus would only interrupt the flow of the narrative. Lions by Dire Straits and Blue Oyster Cult's Then Came the Last Days of May are good examples.
Amazing man, I just watched your yyz tutorial and I’m so glad u are still posting. Thanks for all the helpful tutorials man, I appreciate u
Thanks so much, Noah!
As far as I’m concerned no other “Jane” song stands a chance against Jefferson’s. You did great justice to arguably the catchiest song of 1979!!! Amazing as always!! Thank you!
Thank you Emilia.
It's a great example of a bass line that leaves plenty of space for other things.
Very true!
Cool, I haven’t heard this one in years! I thought Micky Thomas was a great vocalist and this song just rocked out. Craig’s solo might not have been anything ground breaking, but it fit the song perfectly.
Vocals sound incredible!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Look up some recent videos of Micky! He's 75 and still sounds mint!
Excellent as always! I'll always remember this killer tune. I heard it live at my first concert in 1980 at The Asbury Park Convention Center.
Thank you very much! Very cool!
The bass really makes this song...
I think so too...
Excellent playing Troy. I'd love a full on Gibson tbird. I have an Epi, a real handful, real thick neck, hard work to play but still enjoy it, doesn't sound that great but I wouldn't be without it.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. To be honest, I like this bass a lot but could not imagine a Gibson Thunderbird being a whole lot better. The neck is very thin on this bass... almost Jazz Bass thin and very comfortable to play.
Oh yeah great song and nice cover🤘🤘🤘
Thanks!
Nicely done my friend. I played this song a few times in my old rock covers band years ago. It was always a lot of fun to play. 😃👍
Thank you very much. Very cool!
Love it! I have the same bass. Can’t figure out how to attach a photo though..😭😭
Thanks a lot! Very cool, I like this one quite a bit!
Just added this to my UA-cam music "Classic Rock" playlist. Thanks!
Very cool! It was my pleasure.
Here we go, lol. Thanks for making my life alot easier
That’s what I’m here for.
@@TJH3113 hey brother! It sounds to me like every other time on the verse and more often during the end of the song right after the G, It sounds like an subtle E coming in before the D. Maybe it is just the guitar, but I believe I'm going to play it since the bass is so sparse anyway
Haha you're right...it doesn't really have a chorus! 🤣 Man I love that bass & that tone. Awesome cover and good luck on the new job!!!
Right? Is the part that I'm referring to as the "pre-chorus" actually the chorus? I think it's a great bass too, especially at its price point! Thanks! The search goes on!
@@TJH3113 I think so but this one has me stumped 😅
Wow, what a memory rush, haven't heard this in a long time, but I was thinking about that main riff not too long ago, I thought it was Loverboy or one of those similar late 70s / early 80s radio rock bands, totally forgot this was Jefferson Starship. This kind of rock is so forgotten today, but it was big in those days, bands like Saga and Aldo Nova and so on.
This is one of those songs that I'd never change the station on. Not that I was in love with it, I just found nothing offensive about it... and it's pretty catchy. Someone else mentioned how it sounded similar to an Also Nova song.
@@TJH3113 Yeah, I don't know if there is a name for this type of late 70s/early 80s hard rock, but it's good listening to. The kind of stuff you have on while you're working construction or in an electronics repair shop or something (both of which I actually did).
One of the first songs I learned on bass by ear was, "Stranger" from Jefferson Starship. Very simple, I know. It was a stepping stone.
Very cool! I'll have to check that one out.
Love this channel.
I appreciate that!
Great bass sound!!!
Glad you like it!
Nice turnarounds👍
Thanks
Great job Troy :-) You should find a way for the Zulu Warrior doll to be visible in your videos going forward. LOL
Thank you Corey. I believe he is.
That bass sounds awesome in the hand of you Mr Hughes. And not that anyone asked but that lick at 3:19 onwards kinda sounds like the chorus of the AC/DC song 'What Do You Do For Money Honey'.
Why thank you, young Daniel! I'll have to check that out.
Thanks for pointing out the single note, which for some reason I always thought was a double. I'll be dipped !
It was my pleasure!
Another classic, thanks Troy!
Thank you very much.
Great song.
It is, isn’t it?
Great song choice Lynn! Awesome cover as usual. Yes, all of your points are the same parts that piqued my interest as well. Thanks for sharing with the T-bird grumble and snappyness 🙂👍
Thank you very much Dan!
You’re awesome dude!
You too!
I swear that if I was blindfolded and had to listen to 50 bass players, I could pick your triplets out of the the bunch. I can't put my finger on why yours are so distinct to me. Nice work on the song. Any chance you could make a video of Lynn and her finger waving technique?
Wow, thanks for the kind words. Thanks for the idea. I'll run it by Lynn.
This one has been in my practice list for a while. I always want to play both notes during the main riff- so tempting. I really liked this song ever since it came out in... 1980? I just wish it had a heavier rhythm guitar tone. Would sound so much cooler that way. I think it suffered from too much 'Top 40' style production. Drums, keyboards and especially the vocals sound really good though-Mickey Thomas was a killer singer.
Its funny, this song and Find Your Way Back are the only two Jefferson Starship hits that I like, and they have a lot in common.
Cool! Same! Micky Thomas can still belt it out... I think he's like 75!!!
I like your tone no matter what bass you are playing. The exact model of this one is Cassiv IV Pro. The original humbuckers are Gibson USA TB-Plus with ceramic magnets. I like this guitar sooo much. Its in my whish liat for sure
Thanks so much Diego. I'll have to write that down. I've seen some other models out there with chrome covered p/u's and a different style bridge. I think it's a great bass. The guy who works on my basses has worked for Sadowsky and currently works for Carl Thompson, as well as building his own "boutique" basses, and thought it was a great bass too.

No problem 👍
Troy: when you described Lynn coming to you to learn Jane I was laughing so hard because your portrayal of the it mirrored exactly how my wife Marcia approaches me to learn bass to a song she just heard on the radio or some downloaded copy she loves. We have a lot of similarities (age, interests, music tastes, bass, etc) I think it's just cool and why I enjoy your channel so much. Plus....as an added bonus you are just a great bass player with a good ear. What more can I ask for as a dedicated viewer 😉?
Lynn is an anomaly. She can be incredible quick and direct or she can take the absolute long way around when making a point or asking a question. One of Lynn's sisters is name Marcia. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
Awesome. I think the upbeat is played in the upper octave first 3/4ths of the verse though.
Thanks Al. It's possible.
Nice choice. There's a good cover from some known guys "M.Portnoy, J.Hoekstra" ect. That have a heavier cover on Y.T. you might like. You do a good job going through the song. "Pre chorus " or maybe a bridge even though it's perhaps not a traditional bridge. Anyway, I can see how I might want to pump 8ths on the verse rather than one note. Also that chorus picks up a bit. As you show, thanks for doing this song. You always do a great job and I appreciate it. Anytime I have a question about a song I fall back to your channel for correct answers. Good luck on your upcoming new job! I think that you will be at home an comfortable in no time. Being the new guy ain't great but its rarely as bad as I think it will be. Hope a few words from my experience help.
Thanks. I'll have to check that out. And thanks for the vote of confidence, as well as the well wishes on the new job. I don't have my hopes up, but we'll see what happens.
Pretty straight forward, LMAO! well done
Thanks Edward!
Very nice. As per your usual presentation. I really like your analysis, when you share those.
I know you like YES, based on previous videos. I have wondered if you listen to any of Rick Wakeman’s more recent work, specifically his recently released “The Red Planet”. Bassist Lee Pomeroy adds beautifully to many of the tracks and in (what I find to be) interesting ways. for what it’s worth…
As always, thank you for sharing your talents with us.
Thank you very much.
No, I've not heard any of Rick's recent stuff, but I'll try to check it out. I saw Rick and Lee a few years back with Rick and Jon Anderson's version of Yes and they were all incredible. Also saw Lee play with ELO!
@@TJH3113 that is very cool you have been able to see those people in concert…in person. As I have been paying closer attention to what Lee has done, I am further impressed. Truly a crime that the bass tends to be left in the background with little attention paid to the fundamental role it plays.
That is one of the many reasons I like your videos so much, you are shining a spotlight on the bass lines of the songs you cover, and you do it really well. You don’t jack the bass line all up, showing off yourself, although you obviously are very skilled and could really do a lot to make yourself the center of attention but for those of us that watch and listen, you are helping draw out the magic of what is already there and why the song is interesting. I have read many, many comments from others in response to your videos, where people are saying they had no idea the bass lines are so complex, etc. Ya, helping us appreciate music through the power of bass!! 😎
Thanks Troy 😁😁😁
Any time!
Was that Peter or Dave playing bass on that track ? That Thunderbird sounds amazing btw.
According to Wikipedia, it was David. He wrote the lyrics as well, I believe. Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Thanks Patrick. I'll have to check that one out. Next week is my last week. I'm going to try something else out. There were aspects of the job I actually liked, but it was way too physical a job for me to do at this age. I was really starting to feel it in my knees and I've worked with a couple of guys with bad knees and it's not a pretty sight. That being said, they treated me great and I'm leaving on very good terms, so the door should be open if things don't work out at my next gig (which is just a straight driving job). I'm proud that I stuck with it for as long as I did (nearly 8 months). It was the hardest I've ever worked in my life.
Great song and great cover! I enjoy your commentary. What is the big black pedal on the desk to the right of the frame?
Thanks Jason, I'm glad you liked it. That is a SansAmp Para-Driver.
Bassically, the D and A are to emphasize the up beat of the verse.
I get it, but I think it would have had a bit more impact if the guitar and bass played together. I wonder how they approach it live?
@@TJH3113 I checked out a live version. However, I could not distictly make out if the bass line in the live version was different than the studio version.

Not a big deal as it's way below your level but, if you have the time, I would enjoy seeing what you come up with for the bass line.
structurally, a chorus should have the basic motifs of the song repeated at least twice trough the song, but here, they also repeat in the verse, so im not sure, you could say the have a middle section after the first ''pre/post chorus''
I'm wondering if what I was referring to as the "pre-chorus" is actually the chorus?
@@TJH3113 it could be, but it doesn't have the feeling of a chorus, it also doesn't repeat that much on the song, a chorus usually repeats twice on a song and it's like the peak of a song, that part just sounds like a buildup
You need to try a vocal cover of this song. Haha.
"Haha" is right!
Active pickups?
No, passive.
