For color comparisons, I would love to see comparisons between M. Graham Anthraquinone Blue and Daniel Smith’s Indanthrone Blue. I’d also like to see comparisons between different brands in quinacridone rose and yellow ochre, and maybe burnt sienna?
A bit sad to see the end of S2, but I'm looking forward to S3. I have Sleeping Beauty on my pallette, and I will find any excuse to use it! I'm glad you did this, I was thinking about getting the Kingman, and now I realize it's not what I'm looking for. Thanks for saving me some money, Oto! 😃
I love them! It would be so cool to just be able to play with both. I have a self control issue and could easily build this ridiculously large disfunctional palette, just for the sake of looking at all the colors....;D Thank you Oto! Great video.
First, I truly want to thank you Dr. Oto, if I can ever afford more paints I weil come back to all these showdowns and know which is worth my money to me. I seem to be as odd duck; I love the Kingmans green. It's such a light ethereal green! Thanks again for all you do! I have learned so much. ⚘💚
I love both of these SO MUCH. The colors are so unique and beautiful! I'm really glad you were able to get these with Patreon support, I think you could paint really unique pieces with these colors ♥
Thank you so much for this series! I'm a fairly new watercolor artist, and much more interested in this aspect of it than I expected to be. You and Denise Soden (In Liquid Color) have helped me so much in determining which paints (brands and pigments) to buy.
According to the Daniel Smith online store, both of these colors have a MSRP price of $32.54 (US). But, DS is offering them for $22.78 each. Then shipping would have to be added in. If I could afford to get just one of these paints, it would be the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. I know that genuine turquoise comes in a variety of greens, blues, and eveything in between. I also have learned that to tell if a stone is genuine turquoise, I can take a cotton swab dipped in acetone and rub it across the stone several times. If no color comes off, the stone is genuine. If color does come off, then it has been dyed to look like turquoise. Turquoise is my birthstone and I've learned a lot about the stone over the years.
Oh my goodness ~ I think I’m going to have to buy both of these colors!! They are gorgeous! Thank you Oto! I’m so sad the series is ending. I look forward to more videos!
Beautiful colors! I have the SB turquoise & love it. But I found out from a jeweler that the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise mine closed down in 2012. So, it makes me wonder how they continue to get enough stones to make the paint.
Both colors are soo different, but look so summery fresh to me. :) I love the purples of the sleeping beauty turqoise and the soft pastell blueish greens from the kingman green turquoise. Very beautiful colors. I bet they look great with gold.
I know this video is older but my mom just let me pick out two Daniel Smith Primatek Colors for xmas. I picked Sleeping Beauty Turquoise inspired by this video, and Amethyst Genuine inspired by another of your videos. I'm super excited to get the two colors and am re watching the videos :) These are also two of my mom's favorite gemstones so I'm going to paint her something with the two colors as a thank you.
That sleeping beauty is a beauty, out of my price range though unfortunately. Thank you so much letting us get a closer look at it, I'll be adding it to my wish list
I have the kingman because I have an ring of kingman turquoise. It separated with time. But it is beautiful here. I might pull it out again. Thank you.
Get them both! At least over here in the US they're around $22. That's less than an evening out at a medium-nice restaurant. For both of them. I guess y'all at the other side of the pond have to pay customs too. Get them both and forego a night at your favorite restaurant.
I want them BOTH, specifically because I want to create a brights pallet AND a pastels pallet to be able to achieve different looks based on the project I'm doing without the need for a lot of prep beforehand to create the needed colours. I would really love to see comparisons between brands. Schmieke, M. Graham, Holbein, Daniel Smith, Graumbacher, Winsdsor & Newton etc. Maybe choose some of the top primary and secondary colours and do the comparisons in a chart style that way? Just a thought.
I have sleeping beauty and Amazonite genuine. I like neither of them. They were left along deep in my drawer. I regretted buying them. I can’t think of a use for their week performance. After watching your video, now I feel a little better about them. Thank you.
I love where both turquoise is mined and wow those colors are so beautiful! I can’t say I have any use for these two paints specifically before watching this..:now I have to get the Kingman green but will prob get both just because they both are beautiful!
Well shoot I love them both for different reasons! I like the Kingman color for pastel tones and the Sleeping Beauty is almost like a good granulating Cerulean color.
I much prefer the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise but i was thinking the granulation of the Kingman Green Turquoise might be nice to mix for the fall leaves muilticolor mixes with the reds, oranges, yellows and browns. Which heavily granulating colors would you use for great fall leaves mixes whether you use Primateks or not? Thanks!
omg please PLEASE do a list of overall daniel smith colors pallette you'd recommend to get that will mix and be most versatile I am so confused still as I'm sure many are after buying many.. wasted money too on wrong colors..
Been looking for a pale green for my palette, I was gonna pick up cobalt green pale but Kingsman Green Turquoise looks soooooo pretty and soft i just had to get it, cant wait to play with it!!!
I got a tube of the Kingman from my neighbor and it had dried solid. I cut it open and put in a jar with some warm water and was able to resurrect it. I had no idea it was $20 a tube! I do love it but that sleeping beauty is just glorious... thank you Oto! Looking forward to series 3.
kookatsoonjan yes exactly... cut it up the side then mixed it with boiling water and let it soak for a few days. Then let the water evaporate and put it into pans. Worked perfectly!
I love SB Turquoise! I use it a lot. However as someone else mentioned, I had never heard of Kingman Green Turq. Thank you for sharing! Your new series sounds really good.
Irit Landgraf has a video where she mentions that Schmincke's Cobalt Green Turquoise is very similar to the DS Sleeping Beauty Turquoise in hue, but is MUCH cheaper. I have the Schmincke one and when I compared the two (I have the DS dot card) I really agreed. The Schmincke one is stronger tinted, but when used moderately they are super similar. Just a tip in case anyone is interested! (Irit shows the two side by side in that video btw)
I know this is an old episode and you are struggling but just a fun fyi.... the sleeping beauty mine is what they call dry. So all the rock that they can get out is out. These turquoise colors come from basically the same mine owned by the same family. You know dance with the one what brung ya! 🤣. So they are now selling the green turquoise. Daniel Smith must have been a dream come true to use all the left over rock to make paint. That’s using it up. Keep up the great work going to go get my own tube.......tubes!!!!!😁. Stay safe!!!
I got a tiny dot sample of the D.S. Cobalt Turquoise and thought it was super close to the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. The Cobalt Turquoise is only series 3.
They both come from the same mine. Sleeping Beauty ran out years ago and the Kingman mine is trying to continue to make money by selling the Kingman green. The Sleeping Beauty is absolutely gorgeous and I would prob take both. I do flowers. I’m sure I could find some flowers I could use them for. Thanks for the info. 😁
Kingman Green reminds me of a more intense Malachite. They're both weird colours but pretty on their own. Im not sure I would have any mixing advantages for them.
Thanks for letting me know there is a synthetic malachite. I shall be interested to see how close in hue it might be to Kingman green, which would be my choice. I have a love of pale subtle greens, the SB turquoise does not grab me, and I am not so precious about what I do to wish to spend that much on that particular hue, beautiful as it is. This has been like window shopping! Great video as usual.
Hi OTO, despite turquoise being one of my favorite colour I find these two very unworthy, considering the steep price one has to pay to get them. Beside I think I can probably mix both colours using my beloved PB16, I’m sure the result will be quite similar minus the granulation of course . It goes without saying your video are always a delight to watch, very informative and well made. Can’t wait for next season! 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼
In Canada, Daniel smiths series 4 are 28.99 plus tax. They only sell lapis lazuli, no other series 5s at any of the five art stores I regular so I haven’t checked their price but it’s probably thirty dollars plus Yikes
The SB Turquoise is really lovely, but not so sure it needs a place on my palette. Unless I want to end up with one of those monster 100+ color palettes, LOL! Trying to keep mine to only 33 is so hard. But as a specialty color, used on occasion from the tube, I could use it that way. It seems close to DS's Cobalt Turquoise Blue, though that may be just my monitor. I wonder how long they will keep this color since the SB mine was closed down six years ago. I'd like to know how big DS's stockpile is, and how long they estimate it to last.
I'd love to see their pigment warehouse! I bet it's like an aladdin's cave. 33 is a really good number to keep. I usually have twenty-something colors on my main palette then a second palette for less frequently used colors.
If only I had Hermoine's bag I would carry every color in their line, plus a lot from Sennelier. I guess us Muggles aren't going to have that option though. *sadface*
emmmmmm both of these are too extreme to the green and blue to be turquoise but as individual colours they are both great colour ......... i would like to see a swatch mix of these two colours to see if you cud get a balanced middle turquoise, thanks for the video
I just saw the SB Turquoise at one of my local art stores today. I'm going back tomorrow. It's the last day for the 40% off coupon that I've had a boat load of. I have 4 stores to stop by tomorrow and Sleeping Beauty is the one of the tubes that I plan on getting. BTW, I've got to correct you. You've done 42 colors. You had 2 vids that you had 3 colors in. Thank you so very much for doing this series. Thank you!! This has helped me tremendously.
completely different. Phthalo Turquoise is intense, high tinting strength, non granulating transparent color. SB Turquoise is much lower in tint strength, etc.
I have an old tube of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise that is not this beautiful blue. I recently started using my DS paints after being away from them for several years. Does anyone know if SB Turquoise is fugitive? Mine is a dull greyed blue. It was purchased directly from DS.
It's classified as excellent in lightfastness but I wonder if it could be a chemical reaction over the years? Fascinating to know what caused the color change.
I've heard that SB Turquoise is not recommended for lightfastness - and the color changes . . . I took it off my palette, reluctantly . . . have you actually used it over time??? ,
Gorgeous colors, and both probably in short supply. Unfortunately they are among the few of the Daniel Smith colors that are somewhat fugitive according to Jane Blundell's lightfastness tests, along with Alizarin Crimson, Prussian Blue, Rhodentite and Aureolin (janeblundellart.blogspot.com/2014/09/next-lightfast-test-results.html). Fortunately the other Primateks are very lightfast. Looking forward to the new series, these are so much fun!! Thanks, Oto!
What a wonderful note to end on! Thanks for showing these two off. It's great to see them side by side. The SB Turq is my kind of color 😍
Me too. It's such a beautiful color.
For color comparisons, I would love to see comparisons between M. Graham Anthraquinone Blue and Daniel Smith’s Indanthrone Blue. I’d also like to see comparisons between different brands in quinacridone rose and yellow ochre, and maybe burnt sienna?
oh I love those ideas. You always suggest such good comparisons. Thank you so much :)
So happy to hear that these videos have saved you money. What do you use the SB turquoise most for?
I love them! It would be so cool to just be able to play with both. I have a self control issue and could easily build this ridiculously large disfunctional palette, just for the sake of looking at all the colors....;D
Thank you Oto! Great video.
Hahahahaha I’m the same!!! I’m happy to hear that I’m not alone
I love that we all have difference preferences for different colors :D So glad you are enjoying the showdown.
I love both of these SO MUCH. The colors are so unique and beautiful! I'm really glad you were able to get these with Patreon support, I think you could paint really unique pieces with these colors ♥
I just love the dainty, delicate color of the mixes using Kingman Turquoise! I also love the subtle granulation.
It does make such lovely soft color mixes as you say. So soft.
Oh my gooooodness. I wouldn’t be able to decide between them. They are both GORGEOUS.
This was such a great season! Thanks for all your hard work and yay for Patreon for making it happen.
Thank you so much for watching the season!
Thank you so much for this series! I'm a fairly new watercolor artist, and much more interested in this aspect of it than I expected to be. You and Denise Soden (In Liquid Color) have helped me so much in determining which paints (brands and pigments) to buy.
I’d like to see the colors mixed together!
I have both and I love them. I use kingman green in most desert scenes. So fun. 🥰
According to the Daniel Smith online store, both of these colors have a MSRP price of $32.54 (US). But, DS is offering them for $22.78 each. Then shipping would have to be added in. Great choice Donna, I would go for the same too!
cool! but I heard this color fades overtime sadly..
You can find them for $19.52 on dickblick.com. Have fun!
Sleeping Beauty Turquoise makes a beautiful sky. I even prefer it over cerulean or cobalt blue for sky painting.
I love rewatching these color showdowns 🌺
Oh my goodness ~ I think I’m going to have to buy both of these colors!! They are gorgeous! Thank you Oto! I’m so sad the series is ending. I look forward to more videos!
Thank you! Hopefully, it will return very soon!
Beautiful colors! I have the SB turquoise & love it. But I found out from a jeweler that the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise mine closed down in 2012. So, it makes me wonder how they continue to get enough stones to make the paint.
I wonder just how much of the turquoise they bought!
I wonder if DS hoards and stockpiles when they find a limited resource.
Do you think this will be like the much hoarded Quin Gold? I totally missed the boat on that! lol...
Jodi Higgins I wasn’t even aware there was a boat at the time!
Crystal Schranz - me either! LOL
Ty for all your color showdowns. ..they have certainly helped me as a beginner....
So glad you found them useful. Thank you for watching the videos Kathee.
Wow! These are both so beautiful! SB Turquoise would be my first pick.
Great choice Jill! My choice too.
Both colors are soo different, but look so summery fresh to me. :) I love the purples of the sleeping beauty turqoise and the soft pastell blueish greens from the kingman green turquoise. Very beautiful colors. I bet they look great with gold.

Loved this series so much
Been looking for a pale green for my palette, I was gonna pick up cobalt green pale but Kingsman Green Turquoise looks soooooo pretty and soft i just had to get it, cant wait to play with it!!!
Aw yay! So glad you went for the Kingsman. It is loooovvveeelllyy.
I would love a pigment around half way between these two colors.
I agree, sleeping beauty is my favourite out of the two too!
kookatsoonjan yes exactly... cut it up the side then mixed it with boiling water and let it soak for a few days. Then let the water evaporate and put it into pans. Worked perfectly!
Beautiful colours! I myself was very intrigued by those colours when I started using Daniel Smith watercolours. Lovely video as always!
So glad you enjoyed these videos! Thank you for watching Amysaur.
I prefer sleeping beauty. Beautiful name and beautiful color!
What a great finale! If I ever have money over then I think it would have to be the sleeping beauty. And per green!!
Great choice, I would go for that too!
I love SB Turquoise! I use it a lot. However as someone else mentioned, I had never heard of Kingman Green Turq. Thank you for sharing! Your new series sounds really good.
What do you normally use SB turquoise on?
I use it in skies and backgrounds mostly when I want to have a lot of granulation. I mix it with other blues. But also, recently in a peacock.
Irit Landgraf has a video where she mentions that Schmincke's Cobalt Green Turquoise is very similar to the DS Sleeping Beauty Turquoise in hue, but is MUCH cheaper. Just a tip in case anyone is interested! (Irit shows the two side by side in that video btw)
@D James It's both disappointing and somewhat of a blessing somehow, since it couldn't turn grey on you as you didn't use it! 🙈
I bought both thanks to you.
I know this is an old episode and you are struggling but just a fun fyi.... the sleeping beauty mine is what they call dry. So all the rock that they can get out is out. Kingman. There’s two neutrals and I like that.
This is a great one. I've always wondered about these two colors. I bought Lapis Lazuli and I have been disappointed with it. I found it very weak.
I'm so sorry that you were disppointed with the lapis, yes I've heard it's very weak :(
I once purchased lapis lazuli and I was very disappointed. It looks weak, even in strong tints.
emmmmmm both of these are too extreme to the green and blue to be turquoise but as individual colours they are both great colour ......... i would like to see a swatch mix of these two colours to see if you cud get a balanced middle turquoise, thanks for the video
You are so welcome Ian, thanks for watching!
Best yet!!!
Thank yoU!
@@OtoKano you are very much welcome 😚
I didn't even know that there was a series 5. I could do without either tbh, especially since I know how expensive series 4 can be.
I just saw the SB Turquoise at one of my local art stores today. I'm going back tomorrow. It's the last day for the 40% off coupon that I've had a boat load of. ha ha thank you Kat. I love a correction that tells me I did more than I thought :D Thank you! Really hope you get that SB turquoise!
How does SB Turquoise compare to Pthalo Turquoise?
completely different. Phthalo Turquoise is intense, high tinting strength, non granulating transparent color. SB Turquoise is much lower in tint strength, etc.
@@OtoKano thank you
Comparison between different brands. Yes, please! If they behave almost identical I will buy a cheaper brand 🙂
I need the sleeping beauty
Have Kingman and Rhodonite
I have an old tube of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise that is not this beautiful blue. I recently started using my DS paints after being away from them for several years. Does anyone know if SB Turquoise is fugitive? Mine is a dull greyed blue. It was purchased directly from DS.
It's classified as excellent in lightfastness but I wonder if it could be a chemical reaction over the years? Fascinating to know what caused the color change.
Regina Rooks according to Jane Blundell’s website it’s fugitive and she does not recommend using it.
Thanks for the feedback. It was very disappointing when I discovered my paint had turned.
I've heard that SB Turquoise is not recommended for lightfastness - and the color changes . . . I took it off my palette, reluctantly . . . have you actually used it over time???
,
Not over time yet. I am planning a lightfastness test with all the DS colors I have very soon.
A few people have questioned their lightfastness, so I am going to do a lightfastness with them very soon!
The dilemma of my dreams :).
They are both beautiful but I still want sleeping beauty... One day lol. They are super expensive here.
They are so expensive here also. I wish these came at a more affordable price.
Love sleeping beauty turquoise. Paid 12 usd on amazon
You got a great deal there!
