    Like Xmas in July. Too many nice things arrived to mention, but that incubator, nice, what a great surprise for your modern homestead. Love the thunderstorm special effects, and the Mr. Bigs crow bomb in the middle of it. Nice to see your ladies, and the Mrs. looks great with the new egg basket. Sorry to hear about the baby ducks. The remaining ones look lively and healthy.

    Just ordered mine today. Started saving eggs the other day going to raise our meat birds from eggs up. Plus we want more ducks so we need this for that as well. Picked up the same one along with the heating lamp you just got. Used the discount and I pretty much got the nipples for my rabbits for free. Can't wait the kids are super excited. Thanks for sharing wouldn't have found out about coops and more if it wasn't for you.

    Well done to Jason on supporting Lumnah Acres which is really nice of him and if I were stateside I'd definitely consider him for any poultry hardware needs. Those incubators look well designed and I hope you finally have some Icelandic chicks hatch out. Sorry to hear about the duckling(s). Gina's dress was really pretty today and you're a lovely family :)

      Well you will have a much larger audience in the next couple of years. Your channel is not only entertaining but very informative. I have learned more watching your channel than any other homesteading channel as it pertains to animals and your land management. You also have a wonderful presence on video and a natural ability to communicate with your audience. You and your family are very generous to share your lives with your viewers.

    Hey Al that's the same exact incubator that I use here on my channel. I have a series on incubating chicks using that incubator. Btw for Olivia you shouldn't mix different species of fowl, quail has a different incubation period and if you timed the eggs so they'd hatch at the same time the chicks would trample the tiny quail. I hope coopsandmore comes out with poultry netting. Take care

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому +1

      That would not be good! With the quail! They are working on the netting! Woot-woot!

      Portugee Prepper Do you have easy instructions on how to set it? We have one similar but the humidity I believe is too high. The defaults are 37.7 degrees Celsius and 77% .

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому +2

      You might want to get a hydrometer and see what that reads compared to the incubator. Our other incubators are 10% off

    • @portugeeprepper6821
      @portugeeprepper6821 7 років тому +3

      AllmendingerNDHouse I have a little series of videos that cover my experience with this incubator. It covers a lot of things, like on which X water trays i filled to maintain my humidity. But I also feel like climate plays a big role as well. Example it's been 80-90 degrees here with 90-100 humidity outside if you don't have ac climate controlled house or room your humidity levels will be tough to control at 50-60%, you also could use your basement temperature usually maintains well there. Also I agree with Al get a secondary thermometer/hydrometer to make sure your readings are consistent, and I'd run the incubator for 2-3 days before entering any eggs to get a baseline on how your incubator reacts over a longer period. Hope this helps

    Quail eggs raised locally are used extensively for solving allergy problems. 9 little raw eggs a day for like 2 weeks and you are supposed to be good for a year . . . raw makes it pretty tough for me to get down, but they don't taste bad and are small enough to swallow in one gulp. Now you can also buy powdered pills of quail eggs which aren't local and are pretty messed with, but people still use them. These eggs are also sold in French restaurants and are considered an aphrodisiac in many countries. Quail are easy to grow too, but the males are brutal on the females if numbers aren't right, so often end up butchering males quickly.Thanks!

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому +2

      Thanks! I didn't know that about quail eggs! Great info and thanks for sharing!

    • @eaglegoldengate4184
      @eaglegoldengate4184 7 років тому +1

      yeah, and I forgot to add that quail have a higher body temperature so there are no worries of salmonella in their eggs if eaten raw. This means they are great for raw egg recipes like home made mayo! The big difference for city dwellers is that there are usually no ordinances within a city for raising these birds . . . somehow they've escaped regulation! They are constant eaters and mess up a cage more quickly than chickens, I think . . . . Many people are raising them to release them back into the wild to repopulate and also to hunt.

    Yes you can put quail and chicken eggs together. quail run about 15 to 16 days to hatch. The birds feather out at about two weeks. The quail start laying at about 6 weeks and a few days. Quail multiply very quickly.

    Someone did the math and said quail eggs are more efficient regarding weights of eggs vs weight of bird food. They also mature faster if you want to eat the birds. I plan on starting with chickens and transitioning to quail.

    I am guessing that as a tight wad the incubator with the yellow turner that you bought for $5 was that cheap because there was a part missing. If you look at the open end you will see spikes like on the other end that go through a rail? I wouldn't mind betting that rail is missing

    Same thing as the chinese incubators. Since companies just buy them customized with their logos. Those turners are the ones I bought to replace the ones it came with. I figured why not get both sets of the turner trays for the same price as the quail chinese incubator from a usa ebay seller? Mine is a different model but there is a model from china exactly like this. Anyway the one I bought was the 96 egg incubator and then I bought two of the red turners you have with your new one. The incubator was $78 and the two turner trays together were $80. If I wanted to buy the quail version of the chinese incubator I ordered it would have been $160 (as the two trays of quail turners is 288 quail eggs, 144 eggs each).
    I mention this because they all have similar problems. As they have very little insulation they don't maintain the heat well, making the motor work harder, and they have to be opened to add the water when it's needed and it can also make the motor work harder as some days it needs a lot of water lol. Anyway my fix for these two problems is this:
    Keep it in it's box. Once assembled use the box to put the incubator in, take bubble wrap if you have it (I didn't do that the second go and my hatch rate, although decent compared to most people who have these incubators, wasn't as good as when I used the bubble wrap) put it between the plastic and the box. Then take the styrofoam that fits your lid and cut out the bit with the digital read out it's really easy. Keep that on top. It keeps it insulated much better.
    For the humidity issue and making it so I didn't have to open it all the time I took a clear condiments bottle from walmart (less than a dollar, the ketchup mustard bottles work too but you can't see the level of water as well) they have a pointed tip. I got some aquarium plastic tubing (the kind that goes to the air rock things). I drilled a small hole and lead it all the way to the bottom level (my incubator has two levels) through the grating. Then when I needed water I just gave it a squirt. Also if you have a cheap hygrometer it would be good to calibrate it sort of or at least get an idea since it isn't always what it says it is on the digital reader that is built in.

    • @SunnieDIY
      @SunnieDIY 7 років тому

      Oh I also forgot problem 3 that I didn't previously mention baby feet can go through the grate. I know I have baby quail so it's worse but since I have two levels the first time I incubated eggs one poor unfortunate little quail stuck her foot through the grate to the fan (the two level model has a fan for the top level floor so air can get to the bottom). New born chicks can still have this problem though not as common but the best fix for all this is cheap dollar drawer liner. It's rubbery and has holes so air can still flow properly but baby feet stay safe.
      A lot of people had serious problems with these incubators losing tons of eggs just to have a few hatch. Most people ordered those eggs too so that really sucked for their pocket books. Out of 288 last time (since like I said mine had two levels full of 144 quail eggs each) 235 quail eggs hatched. One egg from my homemade incubator...... That didn't work out (it was an experiment) So 234 out of 288 (thats 84% hatch rate, and some of those eggs weren't even fertile and some had hairline cracks I didn't see when I put them in I should have candled them first there were just so many).
      This time I had 100 total hatch out of 129 I believe (I had both levels set up but only one turner in the top level and I didn't fill it the whole way. I think I have lost about 20 of them due to some just not being strong, some getting stepped on during feeding and water time. It happens when you hatch a lot unfortunately and quail are very tiny. Anyway when some people were getting a quarter to half hatching for me to get so many to hatch I really think it improved my hatch rate to adjust it. I wanted the 96 egg turner since for normal eggs it actually holds more than the one with the quail egg bits. So in my purchasing it that way I got both sets of turners for the price of one.

    • @SunnieDIY
      @SunnieDIY 7 років тому

      I recorded all of it I just haven't put the videos together and put it out there yet but it will be my second video. Just getting use to editing videos lol. I hope I was able to at least describe it well enough in comment to help you avoid some of the problems others had and the liner definitely helps chicks not get their little feet in the holes when it's hatching time. I took out my turners all together on hatching day though just so they could run around and not hurt each other climbing on the turners lol. I'm sure they would be fine it was just me over thinking it again but I wish I had realized to add the liner earlier. Not sure if your plastic bottom has a huge hole on one of the sides but mine do on both layers. I think it's for the cords to come through and since all of these seem to be prefab all parts fit their models I wouldn't be surprised if yours had it despite not needing it being only one layer. BTW this is Mistress Phoenix (I commented on a lot of your earlier videos under my other profile this is my new profile for youtube specifically lol).

      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for sharing the great info! Is that why I haven't seen Mistress commenting lately? :) I cant wait to see the video when you edit it!

    • @SunnieDIY
      @SunnieDIY 7 років тому

      Thanks, it's all really new to me. It's not that I didn't find purpose in my old job, it's just it's getting old lol. Since I am online all the time for work just about anyway I figured might as well give this youtube thing a shot. It's definitely a lot different than graphics editing (which despite not being what my job is known for lol it still involves that when I do my own listings etc). I am great at editing pictures but there are sooo many buttons on Adobe Premiere. I bought a copy of the last stand alone version (cs6) despite the warnings it was far behind the new monthly one but it's been very good to me so far lol. I have a quail culling video but it's private. I think I did ok with that one. I didn't do it the normal way I used a needle (air embolism) to put them to sleep without medicine (since medicine would taint the meat).
      I used my old work email and since it was up any time I commented that's what my name came up as but I couldn't use that for youtube videos lol... My real name is Sunnie by the way. I'm going to re edit my quail video but I am not sure if I want to put it out there since it might cause problems with monetizing with the rules always changing lol. Not that I can right now but I would like it to be an option at some point. I hear adsense gets particular about those kinds of videos. I'm working on editing it right now.
      Likely going to post it Friday maybe on the incubator stuff. Since you just got yours though I just wanted to make sure you knew of some of the issues before you put eggs in them. I watched a few videos on the version I have and a lot of people complained so I decided it was cheap enough (as incubators go) that I could alter it and not get too mad if I don't get a good hatch rate anyway since no one else was seeming to do well with them either. I wasn't expecting so many to hatch and it was crazy when they hatched it's like winter didn't want to end this year lol. I had them all in the living room with me in those plastic bins with lights.... Something else about quail... Those little boogers start flying a bit at 2 weeks old......
      Turns out also that one of my dogs (Sierra) likes to kill them... Since she is such a calm, sweet, motherly type personality I never once suspected her until I caught her. I thought they had gotten out and maybe it was just too cold since they weren't fully feathered out.... Nope she caught them broke their necks without leaving bite marks. Also they aren't like chickens for the most part, so that assumption caused a lot of unnecessary stress lol. Now that it's warm and they are outside "free ranging" in their bird netting pen they are doing loads better (that too had it's ups and downs... Just a lot of learning this year lol). There was a fox and issues with that but now that the chicken pen is expanding the space between where the fox will come if he comes back and where the quail are. Before I expanded the pen he would come in the middle of the night and sit by the quail pen and the poor things would jump out to it (thinking he was in with them and panicking, despite their wings being clipped they are amazing jumpers when scared).
      He can't see the net very well so he hasn't dared try to get in the pen, and since expanded hasn't even come back more than the once where he saw it was like that and left. It has it's draw backs being it's very flimsy and easily torn but it's strong enough to bounce the fox off of it when he ran into it and my big dog Talon running head first into it. Since it's hard to see my theory is the fox doesn't want to break in just in case I run out like usual and he panics and gets stuck in the outer layer of the pen. Which is great since I didn't want him to come back. I don't want to hurt him just want him to live far away from me lol. The chickens go in their coops at night so if he did sit by their pen they wouldn't be bothered anyway and the quail are too far from the new edge so they have no reason to panic... If they do they get into the chicken portion of the pen since it surrounds theirs.

    that is the one we ordered we have a hundred dollar box sitting in are closet that i'm to upset to just throw away! to us $100 is a lot. You can't buy the new parts for it. It beeps all the time and you have to run and reset it a lot. so you're going to want to have it in your bedroom so you don't have to get up in the night to set it. the wire that hang down you have to make sure it's in the box! we haven't had it long but think about it if you use it the very first day you get it you only have 2 days to return for a new one on a 30day guarantee and that what happened to us the heater went. We are very sad with it

    Does it always rain that much in the summers where you are? Our summers are very dry; send that rain west!
    Hope you don't mind, but I shard this video on my farm page: facebook.com/BlueRavenMicroForestFarm/
    That incubator looks as if it is a much better design.
    Those are *nice* cones! My ducks were really too big for chicken cones, but the small turkey cone openings were so big my ducks just slid through. Those cones have smaller openings for the necks. Very nice.

      Thanks for sharing! It has only been raining like this the last 2 years! It is crazy! Yes the design so far is much more user-friendly! What brand did you use? We have a turkey cone from rites farm we used last year for our turkeys and it worked great! Can't wait to try these ones out!

    We have had better luck with an incubator without the styrofoam. Our's has the heating and fan in the top, digital readout for heat and humidity and automatic egg turner. Had great hatch rate. The other one with the styrofoam the heater with out in no time, readout was unreliable and had zero egg hatch.
