Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro Lens - More Than You'd Expect!

- Canon’s 100mm f/2.8 L Series macro lens was first released in 2009, but let’s take a closer look at how this lens holds up and performs for video and photos. Overall this is an outstanding lens, and while it works very well at f2.8, I’ve been getting the best results between f4 and f6.
There’s also a little bit of weirdness with the stabilizer and rolling shutter, but it’s very manageable and doesn’t affect still photos. Otherwise this is an awesome lens to add to your lineup, and remember, it’s always a smart idea to consider renting camera gear before diving in and making a big financial commitment.

Please include time stamps for dad jokes😄
Where can i find your class?
I love Canon glass. Nice explain for people on what all this stuff is about. 👍👍👍
I've seen that you're still using Canon glass even on the new Sony!
Love macro lenses! Great for some crazy close b-roll. Congrats on 30k!!
Thanks man!
That's my favorite lens even for portrature. The detail on that lens photos is epic! The bokeh... oh God!! Love it even more than the 70-200
It’s REALLY great for portraits. Definitely underrated there.
Great video Tom !!! 🙌🏽🙏🏼
FIRST! Also I love you!! 😘💜💜💜
I have this and I love it. One of my favorite lenses of all time 😊
Great content. Thank you.
Great review and information. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Regarding the stabilizer rattling when you shake the lens, I heard a tip from a photographer advising people to turn the stabilizer off, on their Canon 70-200mm lens, when the camera is on, before storage and transportation, because it locks the mechanism in place, and protects it from damage. Your lens is probably rattling because the stabilizer was left on before the camera was turned off and the lens removed.
Awesome video Tom! Came across your channel through your podcast with Peter! And now I'm looking into buying this last the past few weeks and look what kinda video pops up hahaha. I was already convinced I was going to buy this lens, but great to get some extra validation on why I should buy it. 😁
Awesome! It's a really great one for sure.
ULTRA DAD MODE ENABLED (explaining why dad joke is funny) 😂😂🤣
We’ve reached the next level.
Great information! The rental process really sparked my interest! I have always wanted to rent a lens! Awesome work!
It’s a great way to access gear. 👍
Great video! Have you tried the old 180mm L macro? It’s very sharp wide open.
I haven't! But I know it's always been a pretty popular one.
The 11 inch minimum focusing distance is measured to the sensor of the camera, not to the lens... which lets you get even closer! Curious to hear your thoughts on the 100mm Macro RF canon lens & it's Spherical Aberration dial.. I have not yet had the chance to play with it too much, but It seems like it might have some fun applications.
This thing is really a Swiss Army knife. I shoot at least half of the b-roll for my videos on this lens
Yes! Incredibly versatile.
Awesome!
Can you do a follow up with this lens?
What would you like to know?
The macro is so much fun
Yessir!
I have the same lens I've noticed when the aputure is at 2.8 and removed the lens from the camera you'll hear the shaking of the stabilizer more then when it is at F10 above
Oooh, how interesting. I need to experiment more.
The rattle is most likely because you remove the lens when the camera is still on.
Always turn off the camera before changing lenses, otherwise the lens is not locked into position.
That also explains why the issue is not consistent 😀
Most lenses are mist sharp 2 stops above wides aperture. That also align with your experiences 😀
Love my 100mm 2.8 L Macro ❤️
Your body Eos R’s stabilisation will help on the video side, the older IS on this lens isn’t too great on non IS bodies though.
NICE!!!!!
Thanks for the close up look at the macro! Also is that big macro available at all McDonalds locations?
Only participating locations for a limited time.
Hey Tom, thanks for another awesome video! I own the lense too and figured out the rattle sound from the lense is the IS. You have to switch it off before you switch off the camera. That should stop it, I figured it out after a year of owning it
Perfect! I figured it was the IS, but I couldn't figure out how to stop it. This makes sense.
@@tombuck yeah, you mentioned you figured it was the IS. I hope it works for your lense. Thank you again for teaching us so much on UA-cam. I learnt a lot from you
Hi, I don't have that close up with my canon 100mm f2.8.cant work that one out and I have ised the 3 different switches on the lense. Do you have any clues.
With My 85 1.4 you have to turn off IS before detaching the lens. No shake . However when I forget, it shakes like crazy.
Good to know!
Tom Buck no idea if that’s a thing or not. Does it work for you ?🤷
Great job, Tom. I love this lens myself! The EF 100 macro non L lens is great also, but lacks IS, although it’s about a hundred dollars cheaper
I've never used the non-L version, but I figure the price difference is so minor, it's worth it to go for the red ring.
Love your videos. And your podcast. I wanted to point out (because I'm that guy) that when measuring minimum focusing distance, it's measured from the sensor and not the front of the lens.
Thanks for that!
LOL Big Macro! well done haha
Thank you, thank you
What is the chair you are using?
It’s the $60ish office chair from IKEA 👍
Does the shaking stop once the lens is powered via the camera?
It's tough to say for sure, but it does seems like when the IS first becomes active is when it really kicks in.
@@tombuck Sorry, that was probably too obvious. Love your channel! Great review of the MV7
Thank you so much!
I'm totally feeling the Wrath of these videos. They're Super Rad!
You should tell your mom, and your dad. 🤙
@@tombuck
Hard stops when manual focusing?
You can keep spinning the ring, but the focus will stop when it reaches the limit.
what camera do you use to record this video
This was the Canon EOS R 👍
@@tombuck how do you set up lighting for this video
5:35 don't you dare stopping these.
I would never do such a thing! 😁
If your doing any video work and using this lens on a tripod, you should turn off your IS.
You won’t see that “wobble”.
Dang I paid to much. Pic of coin with a chip error or cracks in it. After the pic taken the chip is not focused. Not clear at max zoom. What am I doing wrong. F4 100 then use the light meter to get the light. With flash and light no flash qith light. I must be doing something wrong
Hmm, it's possible that you have a defective copy. If so, Canon's warranty should cover it. I will say that mine is sharpest around f5 or so.
"BIG MAC-ro" for the win! Comes with special sauce for beautiful images and video. Bwaaahaaaahaaa! Good points about "tiers" of lenses and being aware of your own use-case needs. Bonus tip for LensRentals.com - if you like the lens, they have a "keeper" option to purchase most of their rentable gear at used prices after rental period.
The Keeper option is always very tempting. If the prices were just a LITTLE lower I’d definitely be in big trouble.
@@tombuck Yep - I hear that. One thing in my favor is they don't usually have many options for Fuji ;)
Was on another channel watching camera rigs. A clip caught my eye. I was like That’s Toms room. ua-cam.com/video/heJ9hWNb10g/v-deo.html Go to 13:10 Just letting you know 🤷🏻♂️
How bizarre! They wrote an article about tilt shift lenses last year and included a link to my video, which was super cool. I’ve used StudioBinder videos in my classes and stuff before, but it’s strange to see a random clip from an older video of mine (they did put a little credit in the corner) 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for the heads up!
Woah! Changed the name of the channel? No longer the enthusiasm project? 0:
Eek! I did that about a month ago because I was finding people getting confused pretty often. I still kept the TEP name for my podcast though because I love it 👍
@@tombuck Really?
I must have been under a rock for a month. I didn't notice. Hahaha
How dare you not immediately notice a branding change to my UA-cam channel! 😁
Great lens no doubt but nothing comes close to the Legendary Nikon 200mm Macro. I regret my life selling that lens
Oh wow! “Big Macro” 🤦🏾♀️
It’s ridiculous how proud I am of that.
Lol. That was the ultimate dad joke.
Now they cranked the price to 1300 wtf!
Really?! How crazy. It's a good lens, but I wouldn't spend that much on it.
