For the rich Filipinos, celebrating their 18th birthday (for girls) is like celebrating a wedding - it is a major celebration!!! I remember when one of my friends celebrated her 18th, she received a brand-new car from her dad, a Tag Heuer watch from her boyfriend, and her parents threw a huge party (similar to the Cassy's and Mavvy's) at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati. Btw, this was 27 years ago!

Not only rich family celebrate their debut like this, its kind of a tradition to celebrate it in a special way or wedding/Ball type, it does not necessarily need to be extravagant, what is necessary is the Candles, Dance and Treasure because it is the purpose why the party is held. Each has its own meaning: treasure is the gift u will give to the celebrant that she can use as she enters adulthood; candles are tasked to make a wish for the celebrant and to give her a special message; as regards the dance, the first dance must be with the father, and it signifies its first step into womanhood and the father's acceptance of the fact while the last dance is for the special someone/suitor.
Some people who can't afford hotels specially those who live in province, conduct their program/celebration in a public sports court and avail cheap resources that they can afford.
However this kind of celebration is NOT mandatory. some debutant prefer an intimate or typical parties just like what I did, there are debutant prefers to use the money supposed to be spent for the celebration at their own choice like buying phones or car.

It is a fancy celebrity birthday party, not a typical tho! most debut party was celebrated mostly with 18 roses and 18 candles to dance and giving wishes and blessing by friends and relatives. Good reaction!!

You got to brace yourself girl! My fam threw a surprise party for me( though not grand), and invited some people I haven’t seen in quite awhile, few I didn’t know. It was a relief I can act unbothered but hey, the cringe is real while listening to their speeches.

Debut Celebration is common in the Philippines, but only for those who can afford, be it simple or lavish like this one in the video. If am not mistaken, it originated in France by Aristocratic Families intruducing their Daughter, who already reached maturity, as first appearances to Society for possible suitors, that means ready for marriage.

My mom explained to me that the tradition of the debut was because in the olden days with the high society set, a girl is not allowed to go "out" in society before 18. This would probably mean that the girl cannot attend social events or go to parties. Once she reaches 18, she is then formally launched into society by holding a debut ball where the debutant would traditionally have a cotillion dance. This tradition of a debut ball is not exclusively done in the Philippines but is instead a tradition which is a remnant of the American era (when the Americans occupied the Philippines during the late 1800). In fact, I believe that in the southern states of USA, they still hold cotillion balls for girls belonging to the high society set when they reach 18. But in the Philippines nowadays, it is not anymore exclusive to the rich and high society. It became more of a milestone for a girl who is celebrating her 18 birthday by holding a party. The party can be as simple or as grand as the family can afford.

    Me???
    Never celebrated my birthday..
Just that for me to celebrate it is totally nonsense.,..
And one more thing I'm an "introvert" and I can't bare being the center of attention..
I'm just thankful I was born,
not only me but everybody should be, even if you've suffered a lot you should still be thankful you are born.
    "Suffering is part of living..."
And one thing I want everybody to know is that if it's your birthday it wasn't supposed to be you who's celebrating and taking gifts from everyone but it is supposed to be your beloved "mother".
Why? Because it's the "day" her sufferings end from 9 months of having you in her womb and it's also the "day" where she is to undergo into an "unwanted pain" just to have you be born in to this world...
"If it's your birtday, remember also the one who gave birth to you, don't be too greedy and just give attention only to yourself just because it is your birthday...."
Has anyone in here dedicated the day of their birthdays to their mother/parents???

This is not at all true... Their are different ethnicity in the Philippines, Tagalog and ilokano people usually do this esp. celebrities... For us in the highlands this is not our culture

Not really. My classmates aren't that rich but they can still afford to have their debut. As long as you can afford.
