    I got myself one of the Robesons when I realised that the £300+ price tag worked out to putting aside just a £1. a day for a year &, with the year’s waiting list, I had the cost covered without feeing the pinch, (from just the small change I was accumulating at the end of most days), especially since John doesn’t require payment until he’s ready to deliver the palette. By the time John was ready to deliver, I’d had the money ready & waiting…in fact, I now have 2 of these Robeson palettes, purchased with the same strategy, & I just love using them & have used them in Scotland, Canada, the Caribbean & in London. They are works-of-art in themselves.

      That's a great strategy and it was on my mind when I ordered this one! From ordering, it gave me a year to get the money together, which was a great cushion and I was able to cover the costs with painting sales. I do also periodically look at buying a Robeson one too as I do really like the look of them but as I've got this one I just never get round to taking the leap (though I'm jealous that you've got two of them!!) - Quite agree that they're like works of art in themselves, it makes me happy every time I use it!

    I like the fact there are less color wells. I enjoy mixing from a fewer set of colors to have more color harmony in my work, so I see 12 wells as more than enough. If I had to use a palette with 24 wells it would be miserable because most of them won’t ever get filled.

      I'm with you on this! I get overwhelmed when I'm faced with too many colours, much prefer trying to mix everthing I need from a more limited palette.

    Thanks for the review John. I really shouldn't buy any more watercolour boxes, but this looks ideal for studio use and plein air.
    If it takes a year or so to complete the order then I have time to salt a little money away to pay for it; yes? Thanks again John. I hope it will be with me in time to use when I finally get my art channel up and running! Cheers John in Brum

      Hi John, I know what you mean about 'shoudn't be buying any more palettes'! I've been using this one for a few months now and I can honestly say it's wonderful to paint with. So far, what with the weather, I've only used it in the studio but the reason I opted for this model is that I wanted one that would work well in the field too! As for your idea around payments, you're quite right. John asks for a small deposit at the point of order, then contacts your about a month before the anticipated delivery date to request for the remaining money, which gives a bit of time to squirrel some money away each month. Let me know if you order one, and how you get on with your art channel - Thanks John.

    Hello John, interesting video thanks. I'm right handed so I'd hold the brush in my right hand and the palette in my left hand via the thumb hole so is your LBBC box left or right handed please?
    Oh and for your viewers wanting to avoid beading on any palette, give the surface a clean with Jif or Cif scouring cream. Do ensure that you remove all traces with a thorough wash of cold water afterwards. Best wishes, Dudley

      Hi there and many thanks for this, I'm glad you found it interesting. I'm right handed like you, so with this palette, if you're looking at it top down, and the thumb hole is towards the right hand side, your left thumb goes through the hole and the palette extends (and can rest on) your left forearm. Hope that this helps!

    I’m covering this palette but $$$$. Jackson’s Art has a similar plastic Liz Deakin version.

    • @johnhaywoodwatercolours
      @johnhaywoodwatercolours  4 місяці тому

      Yes, they are expensive and definitely an investment! I've not tried the Liz Deakin range but have heard of them. Before buying this, I was using the Holbein range of palettes which I know remain very popular and I picked all of mine up on EBay!

    It’s removable so you can wash it easier.

    • @johnhaywoodwatercolours
      @johnhaywoodwatercolours  3 роки тому +1

      haha, yes of course! That makes sense (though I’ve still yet to remove it in over two years of use!) I normally give it a quick spray and wipe down with a bit of kitchen towel and it comes up as good as new!

    Great review, John. Thanks for sharing. Do you find the washes spread out equally in the mixing wells or do they tend to bead up? That is my number one pet peeve with a palette, which is why I currently use a mix of ceramic plates and baked on enamel trays. If you're doing an updated review in the future, it would be great to see a demonstration of mixing using the palette. Thanks for the review. :)

    • @johnhaywoodwatercolours
      @johnhaywoodwatercolours  5 років тому +2

      Hi Conor and many thanks for this, much appreciated. Yes, the washes do spread out evenly. I see this most notably on the large flat mixing area. It's hard to explain in words the difference so you're quite right, a little demonstration that compares mixing on this palette compared to some others would be really good. I will try to do something along those lines as I think it would be useful for others to see too - my only problem is that I'd far rather be painting than making videos so it may be a little while before I get around to it!

      @@johnhaywoodwatercolours Hi John, thanks for your quick response and for agreeing to do a demonstration of mixing watercolour on the palette. There is very little on UA-cam about palettes like these and your video is a welcome addition, along with any future additions. I understand about wanting to paint, as opposed to making videos, so there is certainly no rush. I admire your patience in waiting eleven months for the palette to be made in the first place. Thanks again for sharing the video.

    It does not chip? there seems 2 small chips on the rightmost mixing well, outer edge??

    • @johnhaywoodwatercolours
      @johnhaywoodwatercolours  3 роки тому +2

      Hi there and thanks for this. I think what you can see is either some paint, or the end of the removable brass hinge pin! I've been using this as my main palette now for over 3 years and it hasn't chipped anywhere. I made a leather case so it's protected when I'm moving it around and I do look after it and, so far, I've not had any chips in the enamel.

    If I can keep at this "Watercolor thing" I may treat myself to one of these pallets.
    You mention three colors: Neutral Tint, Turner Yellow, and Transparent Yellow. Which actual brands and colors are you referring to, please? I am using Daniel Smith, Neutral and am wondering if you use it too. I see that you set this pallet up a little different than your blog post of equipment has on it. Tastes change over time. Thanks so much for sharing your information, here and on your blog, John!

      Robert J Hopkins Hi Robert and thanks so much for this. You’re right that tastes change so the odd colour may have changed between this layout and what’s listed on my blog/website. All of the colours I use are Winsor and Newton with the exception of a Lavender by Holbein. Nothing behind this choice other than they’re what I started using from day one. I can’t recall ever feeling let down by my paints - it’s pretty much alway ‘user error’ that lets me down! Hope you stick with the painting (and if you do, these palettes are great!)

      wjfbailey yep, I really like The Holbein Palettes and there a lots of painters far better than me who swear by them! I was using Holbeins before splashing out on this one. I’ve used two different sizes, a 500 and a 1000 (or a 250 and a 500?) let me know if you want any more info or details about them!
