      Mitchell Scott thank you. :) I’ve always heard good things about m Graham. That’s what Mary whyte uses and she mentions them a lot. I use their gouache and love it. I need to get a set and try them. I also hear good things about quinocridone (so?) colors. I worry about mold with the honey in m Graham. I guess it’s only an issue if you close it wet and leave it though.

    • @mitchellscott1843
      @mitchellscott1843 6 років тому +1

      I like their gouache too...I live in a dry arid climate so its not been a issue for me, they don't dry completely hard like WN or DS in palette but they definitely firm up to the point there not runny or anything.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  6 років тому +3

      Mitchell Scott sometimes I think about building a small taboret and mounting one of those porcelain Tom lynch palettes on it. I’d probably load some m Graham on that where it would sit open. It’s super damp here in Pittsburgh haha we didn’t expect it to be so wet and rainy. Beautiful though 😄

    • @mitchellscott1843
      @mitchellscott1843 6 років тому +2

      Ha...maybe in damp Pittsburgh they may be a bit runny? But hey MG is from the rainy humid pnw so maybe even at that its a nonissue :)

      @@mitchellscott1843 Some people in extremely humid locations can't use M. Graham (at least in portable pallets or paint boxes) because they won't dry up enough to stay in their wells. May be ok for a flat studio set though.

    Wow. I’ve never heard such a clear and poetic explanation of the painting process describing color mixing, glazing, and dimension. What seemed like a random lay down of color, emerged as a scene and a portrait-the seeing the 3D face come to life was especially magical. Thank you so much for sharing your process and pearls of wisdom-I learned so much! 😊🎨👍

    love the videos! you are quickly becoming one my favorite artists and am super excited whenever I see you upload a new video! question for you - I'm relatively new to gouache, but have been having trouble mixing greys. Do you mainly adjust the values of your greys like the ultramarine/burnt sienna mixture using white? I always run into issues when trying to get that nice desaturated grey to start landscapes, or mixing the right consistency to do cooler shadows on buildings. you seem to manage that effortlessly so would love any tips if you have a moment :)

    We use almost the same colours. I also have Venetian Red in my palette, although I almost never use it (now I have a reason to keep it there). I always use Naples Yellow when I’m painting portraits. I like to mix it with cobalt teal and just a bit o Quin. Rose for the shadows. Ultramarine blue is possibly the most useful colour that I have and cobalt teal and perylene green my favourite ones.

    This is soooo informative and fascinating. I also use Daniel Smith watercolors yet I have a totally different palette! I don’t think I use a single DS that you use (oh wait... Ultramarine blue- so one). I have so much to learn though. I’m surprised that you use so much yellow ochre! It was one of my least favorite colors because it’s so opaque- until very recently. I’ve been trying the Zorn palette in oils and acrylic and I’m shocked by how much I love it (since none of those colors are my favorite). I want to try Zorn for watercolor. Karla Smith hi Karla! Thanks for watching. This box is a Roberson box. It usually comes with oval shaped domes for deep pool mixing. There are cheaper alternatives if you want to practice on something before upgrading to a box or custom made box. Holbein also makes a great box. The 250 is great for travel and much cheaper. Great information. But is it really $545 for the box you have?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому +2

      Well- some things.. 1. The price has increased on them since I bought this one ($375 at the time).. 2. Having built and refurbished many an antique and new brass box myself for fun- I can say that it is worth it for the guy making it. The process is not hard but it is terribly tedius and time consuming. 3. Depends! It's not a bad thing to think something is not worth it. May be it is not to you. Sargent could paint a masterpiece mixing on the palm of his hand. The object doesn't matter unless it matters to you. For me- yea! I love this style of box. You may prefer plastic and to spend that on something else nice.
      Finally- there ar emore affordable options. Craig Young is a little cheaper- but still expensive. The most bang for your buck I've seen is Brass Palette india- who makes a box like this for around $300 or so.
      Heck- if you want to build one yourself I could teach you. Just be warned it's super time consuming and if you don't already have half the tools it may end up costing around $300 anyway.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Рік тому

      Neat :) I like them. It gives an extra punch when I want it - I don’t often use bright yellow, red or orange and when I do I want the power.

    • @creativecolours2022
      @creativecolours2022 Рік тому

      @@JaredCullum You are right but cad colours are a bit problematic in their mixes particularly if you want to paint with multiple layers. They can give easily muddy mixes, that is what I mean and that is the reason why I don't use them. I paint mostly realistic botanicals and portraits nowadays and I rarely go out for urban sketching.
      But as I saw on your videos you use gouache and mixed media quite often. So using cads makes sense.
      Your work has changed in time btw. Your painting style evolves.I mean you haven't stick to a particular painting style as a lot of artists do so often and that is very good.
      I'm not saying that as a compliment or something. That is my objective opinion.

      Jenna Caruthers thanks for watching. I love gouache. I actually hand made my gouache palette. I’m currently working on making a larger brass version of my gouache box. I tried Prussian blue but it just never happened for me. It comes in Schmincke sets and I used to carry it always just in case but found I stick to my guns on ultramarine for almost everything and cobalt or cerulean to basically boost that one or temper it. Maybe I’ll pull the Prussian out again for a shot or put a small limited palette where that is my only option for a while. Force myself to learn what it can do.

    Love your channel and have also been enjoying your gouache paintings. Do you recommend putting your gouache paints into pans in a metal palette? Will they dry out too much or do you like to put them out fresh. Since I'm starting out new with gouache I don't want to waste my paints if putting them into a palette would be a mistake. I trust your advice. Thanks.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  6 років тому

      Jane Schafer thanks for watching! You can but it’s sorta more of a hassle than it’s worth. You don’t save much and you can never ever turn or tilt the tray it’s in because of its wet it’ll pour out and if it’s dry it’ll chalk up and fall out. If you’re new and don’t have a ton of gouache paintings to do in a row I’d recommend just using tubes on a palette or butcher tray. A little at a time as long as you don’t hold back. Check out Lena Rivo on here. She and I use a similar method of a small plastic tray. :)

The palette choices are extremely versatile and allow so much freedom to experiment!! Two Questions: which of your brushes were you using for this video? @JaredCullum  6 років тому

      Tami Jacque hey Tami! Thanks for watching. I am using an escoda prado 12.
      To dull saturation you want to eliminate the brightness of the color. That can be achieved by adding a compliment to gray the color down and adding white or in this case, correct, more water/less pigment. If it were gouache you’d have to use a lot of white but with watercolor I just keep it very light so that it recedes into the distance. :) hope that helps!

    Hi Jared, thanks for sharing this very informative tutorial. I would like to ask if you could please share your thoughts about this flat-well Roberson palette after several years of using? I notice that when the palette is open, there could be a gap between the lid and the table as the lid is not the same height as the body. Does this make the palette wobble when mixing washes on the lid?

      Hello! I have been using it for years now. I ended up swapping this one for the larger FW palette when I started making them for fun. I hate to say it because I know they are expensive but they are worth it. Especially little brass.. His craftsmanship is really great- although I know he’s one of the most expensive boxes there are. I have not had any issues with bending or even chipping like I’ve seen on other kinds.
      It depends on what makes you happy though. It also is nice that they retain their value. But (obviously) it doesn’t make painting better or easier haha. It is sturdy but it’s mostly just something to make you happy using. I know some people can’t stand the thought of it because of the expense but people spend their own money on their own weird things. Having actually made these boxes i understand the price. It’s not particularly hard to make but it is tedious and takes a lot of time to get it right.

      Oh- and the lid. It is slightly smaller than the base. Base being .5 inch and lid being 3/8ths. It doesn’t wobble. All the weight is in the center base with the paint. It will wobble if you use a thumb ring version. But you can put little rubber stops on it or I use a piece of wood I cut a hole out of the center where the thumb ring sits for mine I made with a thumb ring.

      @@JaredCullum Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I have been wanting to purchase a palette like this for a quite a while and also prefer mixing the paint on a flat surface. That's why I am just wondering if flat wells would work well with the Roberson style palettes. I definitely agree that this palette is well worth the price. There have been people investing over 2 grands in gadgets like a customized keyboard. Not everything has to be compared to the mass production value.

      So you could do a couple things too. Check out the binning Monroe- it’s larger and flatter laid out.
      Also- they’re totally customizable. So you could ask for ovals in the lid for big areas and the flaps flat. You could order a binning Monroe totally flat too which would be large and flat like the Holbein boxes. Just something to think about. :)

      @@JaredCullum That's really cool! I will definitely look more into the range of options. It's good to know that there can be customizations. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and information about the palette.

    Thanks for sharing your color choices and showing your beautiful new brass box! I love seeing new paint squeezed on the palette. 😍 I recently discovered Quin. Pink of Daniel Smith, it is such a nice pink color. I used to have Payne's Gray in my palette but I swapped it with Neutral Tint which I now prefer. I have also added Quin. Gold,which I now feel is essential! I find Cobalt Blue to be a little similar to Ultramarine, so I use Phtalo Blue instead. I started with a Schmincke set too so we have similar color choices. 🙂

      Jacqueline Mendoza I’ll have to check out quinn pink. I tried neutral for a bit too but just decided I like the blue tint. I kinda wish it wasn’t so grainy in Daniel Smiths line. Thanks for watching! :)

      @@JaredCullum I use Schmincke's Neutral Tint, I have not tried the DS version yet. I may stick to Schmincke for Neutral Tint. 🙂 I also noticed that you don't have Viridian or Phtalo Green on your palette!

      Jacqueline Mendoza I would stick to it. I used to use Schmincke for everything and love how smooth their color is but I can’t get it locally and I use a lot of watercolor. It’s easier to go to the blick here and get DS which is IMO the best I can get here. I don’t. I think about vididian all the time haha I had it for years but never used it so I dropped it. Same with pthalo colors. I had ph blue gs but never used it. I have it in my other palette just in case though- my larger box. :)

      @@JaredCullum You can buy Schmincke in individual tubes from an art store here that sells online called Art Nebula www.artnebulaph.com. I know they ship internationally. A 5ml tube costs between $4 - $7.🙂

    Hi, what is the weight of your box? I'm wondering if it's something that I could carry around in my travel kit. I couldn't find the weight on the Little Brass Box website.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  6 років тому

      Sylvia Ramos it is not terribly heavy. It is more heavy than a little Schmincke tin box but not as heavy as the other hand made brass boxes I have seen. Hope that helps :)

      davidamosphotography well- they’re expensive, sure, but I’d rather the craftsman get paid for the consideration and hard work and a product with materials that will last generations. There are less expensive alternatives if you like the structure. Clover boxes are plastic alternatives.
