Awesome. Delightful bit of steampunkery there.
I still think the wimhurst model of counter-rotating wheels, like if you had your magnets like that, and put coils around the rim on the other wheel, that would double your relative speed between magnets and coils giving you more bang for your input buck, as it were. I don't know if I'm thinking on that right, but it Seems like counter-rotating magnets and coils would dramatically increase the output of the low torque generator design without too much extra effort on the input side. If anybody wants to run with that notion, feel free.

@@ThinkingandTinkering I know, I know :). I also know I likely won't get around to it any time soon. Maybe once my kid's not in toddler mode, and I can make him my mad science assistant lol!
it's just I'd hate for a clever notion to languish in this damnable distractable brain of mine if it could inspire somebody, ya know?
When I was "That Guy at the Hardware Store" I didn't usually have exactly the solution, but the thought Facilitated the solution more often than not. People would come from all over town to get my take on weird problems, as I would get them thinking in different directions, at least identifying what the "X" was in their equation, what sort of thing needed to happen right "There" to make it work. That's really where my mind shines- a different angle on problem spots.
It's the blessing and curse of my particular neurodivergence. I see things and make weird connections. I suck at the follow through, left to my own devices. Know thyself, it is said.
So I throw out ideas, just in case anybody finds them useful or inspirational.
(as opposed to an armchair "you know what You should do?" which I know everyone despises. I'm aware it can come off that way. Never my intent)
I Love your clockwork design though. It's just awesome.

Awesome thank you for sharing. I bet you could make a larger green energy version using coil springs from a car? I could also see a larger diameter shaft to take a large whimhurst wheel. @@ThinkingandTinkering that It certainly would. Would need a mighty crank handle/ winding key to counter the torsional stresses from a spring so large. Reminds of some of the self propelled tourbillon mechanism. On larger clocks. Horological society might like a go at building one? I even wonder if Elon musk fancy a go a clockwork hybrid? For his new Tesla. I know da Vinci had a go a clockwork mechanism, and bet he would love this one. We do have one advantage now days is the access to materials like magnetic barings and gears. Or the ability to make them. I’d even propose a magnetic torsions spring might even do the trick. Anyway that’s me with my head in the clouds thinking my way into outer space. Box now long gone. Flywheel and springs next upgrade for sure. I’d say the clockwork torch from the early 2000s would be a worthy entry here.

@@sk8pkl I don’t know if someone would take the time to crank them one by one. where multiple units are concerned. if cranked by a single handle. Then planetary gears could be used to wind them simultaneously. Providing the crank is the sun wheel with a large cog leading to smaller cogs on the springs. With as many torsion spring around its circumference. It will need a ratchet mechanism on the winding shaft to prevent a deadly release of energy as your cranking it. You would not want that to hit you in the face with backlash.

@@jasonhaymanonthedrawingboard the clockwork mechanism has already a load on its spin so it would never "back lash". Take time to understand everything first, dont rush thinking too quick too far. There are many ways to go about this for shure. It is also very efficient, but obviously not so practical. Anyways, it is very interresting! It's a bit like the gravity light, but different.

Or instead of the disk you could hook it up to that windturbine generator you made and see what kind of output you get

Gearing also making the flywheel lighter would help with the lack of torque. the balance in the mechanical bits making it lighter might increase rpm as well. Adding a smoothing cap or a boost controller to regulate the voltage might make for brighter led as well.

Building bigger. Using two large coil springs, flat-wound and a battery, with car or truck starter Motors to wind the springs so you could run 24/7. It's self-winding and could run your whole house or a neighborhood.
Of course you can always add on to it with a giant Paul and pendulum and a huge flywheel. It's just a matter of getting the timing right. And with today's Tech, no big deal.
Remember those wind-up swings for your kid's...?
    And the Tesla turbine...?

  • @Darthmufin

Stuff like this is fascinating but there is a suspiciously or shockingly low amount of this stuff. It's actually very hard to find videos like this as a result, as most results are wind up cranks to charge batteries, or how to wind up watches, its very frustrating.
I don't care if it's not practical, it's just cool to have a mechanical way to store energy but also convert that mechanical energy into somewhat steady electrical energy. Saw someone on youtube before using a gravity generator similar to this to power a radio, so it never needs batteries

Might be off base, but would nitinol be a better material for a wind up spring? Seems like by applying temperature, you could make the spring as limp as a noodle to wind it (using very little mechanical energy to wind it) and then stiffen it after it's wound up. (Releasing a lot of energy as it unwinds.)
Not free energy as changing temperatures requires energy above and beyond the mechanical energy to wind it, but it would be interesting to see how efficient or inefficient it would be.

I forgot to mention, the springs in these are dangerous they can virtually explode if you try to disassemble the spring/drum assembly, also know that the mechanism version with the diecast spring drum is the most unstable to handle as the containment drum is often hair line cracked and broken or fractures under disassembly allowing the spring to violently whip in circles with a hooked shaped talon at its trailing edge it is razor sharp, especially if the end is broken from over winding. Do not take the drum apart! use extreme caution when messing with the drum assembly, treat it as a grenade, as it can take out you sight, one of my favorite power sources, I have a few, the fly weight governor is a favorite of mine on any machine, good luck and be safe with these.
