I never really elaborated on what was different about the musicthing turing machine, but the biggest difference, on labyrinth each bit is a trigger AND a voltage (pitch). With the turing machine, its just triggers, on or off.
The turing machine derives a pitch from the whole byte, the pattern of triggers in the 8 steps is converted into a voltage. So the same bit pattern would always result in the same voltage (ignoring the control available with the expanders).
Labyrinth randomly assigns a voltage whenever a bit is flipped to active, decoupling rhythms and melodies, opening up a lot more possibilities.

i fucking hope theres a minitaur in this labyrinth
in the sense that theres a beast to chase you around : yeah its finding good notes.
😅
That costs extra.
I do believe that's a guaranteed !
😂😂😂
Thanks for this, Jorb. I appreciate that you started the overview with the sequencer-it actually really made clear to me what this thing does, and as a result makes this the best video I have seen about this thing. Nice work cutting straight to the “heart” of the beast! Thanks!
such a beautiful thing. It's like the Subharmonicon on LSD
You explained the relationships between the modules better than anyone I’ve seen yet, and made bangers throughout. Thanks man!
I don't need this, I'm doing okay with my Hypemaster-5000, thank you.
What is a hypemaster 5000 ?
This is the sort of thing that I like. (The synth and Jorb talking about the synth).
First video I've seen with tones that grabbed me. Thank you!
Happy to do it, cheers
Seriously scratching my head as to why anyone with a decent modular rig would ever get this instead of any of the more capable generative sequencer modules. Anyone without such a rig will not get nearly the full potential out of it again leaving me scratching my head as to why they would get one. In any case to each their own and for those enjoying it 👍.
This intro to the Labyrinth is more than just a minor tour... 👀
@@synthnerd4539 can't help but go deep 😅😭
@@JorbLovesGear Go deep enough, you might get a PhD Theseus out of it.

Clever cookie ,-
This bit of kit is actually quite inspired. Really digging it for potential use in my music production :)
Killer video as always Jorb! Thank you for all your thoroughness and commentary! Greatly appreciated always 💜
Superb video. Wonderfully done. 🖤
@@LisaBellaDonnaMusic very high praise, thanks for watching!
Thank you for this comprehensive Labyrinth field guide - well done!
Keeping the triggers but changing the cv is a really cool take on the turing machine!
@@els1f totally agree, it's mega flexible
great jorb! thoroughly enjoyed it, actually the best video i've seen on this fun toy yet, thank you! glad I ordered mine two days ago, less time to wait to try it out!
this will go nicely with my Xenophone Synth
Hey Jorb, amazing video! I was on the fence about buying one of these, but this definitely sold me on it. However it was bit more expensive than I was prepared for, so I won't be to afford my medication 😕
Love me a good Jorb ramble ( the parts in between are also nice)
That's incredible. That's all the stuff I'd want to do…
Nice 1 fella. Looks like Moog have made an absolute beast and I want one. Your hack to make the sequencers swing was interesting, but were they not actually just triplets?
Nice demo and as someone else already stated, most appealing sounds out there (exception maybe from Andrew Huang x Undulae EP but it is heavily processed)
Love the morphing blend of sin/tri you made at 20:40
Cool but not €600 cool.
It's for the types who don't like playing notes in real time at all
@@DendriticFractals- playing in real time is fine but not always as creative as this.
Last demo just took me out from my couch ,somewhere...
That was a great tour de force , from the great Jorb ! 😘
it is similar to my modular setup. I almost always use the quad turing machine in O_C module to generate random looping quantized cv. So fun to jam with and layer with drums
Jorb. Always enjoy your videos bro.

The most interesting feature to me is the Turing/shifters element, would you say it’s similar to Phazervilles DualTM in Ornament and Crime fw?
@@Jin-Hu I don't know dualtm super well, but the most unique part of the Labyrinth is assigning each bit it's own pitch / voltage, instead of using the whole byte to define the output.
I mention that in the description
The Moog Klang Machine. I'm here for it.
Best explanations of Labyrinth! Thank you!
Seams like every one of these Moog semi mods gets me just copying it with other Euro as a patch and making it better, like getting all those outputs you wanted. It’s nice to have Droid to make the interface and all these functions already out there in Euro. Thanks Moog for the 500 patch idea. Wa hard to copy the Subharmonicon because of the 6 oscillators, but this one is easy to recreate. Yes, he fist one costs more to recreate, but my rack is equipped enough now to make this from scratch and anything else moog obsessed our way….
Finally, someone who gets this thing.
With midi, has anyone heard if there will be updates to features, and maybe a plug-in editor like Minitaur has?
i dont know what the editor could even change, probably just sequence steps? Minitaur is digital control of analog circuits, so can control via midi. WIth labyrinth, most of the panel controls are straight up analog.
@@JorbLovesGear Ah. Well, limitations create moments of invention. We're already playing with moog synths without a folder, as a Buchla, with interesting results. Just to see what's possible. Stop for a listen.
Would someone make a Bowie meme with this already! Thanks Jorb!
@@defjeff2907 I can't believe I didn't do that, I'm such a puppet guy
As long as you don’t get turned into The Prince of the Pit Of Stench, it’s all good.
Great vid Jorb for something fundamentally difficult to describe 😂
Great video as always man!
Hmm great explanations of this unit. Thanks!
pretty sweet for a single desktop unit, compact and fun. Gj moog o_O
For those of us that have a lot of eurorack modules… what would re-create this… seems the sequencer is the only thing that would take some logic modules and finesse… the rest of it is just making sure every module has cv control over every function… 2 vcos, a wave folder, vca, vcf(s) maybe 2 mixers, atten/invert, old sub ring module ;] I’ll see what I can muster up- cheers
that scope is Hainbach level dude :D what is that ? :D :D :D
The Lab. is pretty interesting, but not an instant hot buy i think.
I bought a Mother-32 for an ambient modular setup I'm building, and I love it--but damn this video for making it clear the Labyrinth is the Norma to my Big Ed. Great video as always. It would be a sin to put joining your Patreon off any longer.
@@M4NNHEIM would be a really really good pair
Using this reference for any piece of gear I want to replace now.
the mother 32 is lovely. when you combine it with another low pass filter, you get a chance to truly appreciate its high pass.
the high pass filter on the mother 32 is special in the way it does a poor job at being a high pass when the resonance is turned up. the way it works is that it's actually using the low pass filter, and phase inverting it against the original signal. when the resonance is turned up, the phase of the signal being passed through the filter changes, thus reducing the effectiveness of the high pass. ironically, if you make it track the keyboard, it can greatly enhance the bass as you can turn the resonance up and really highlight the fundamental or the second/third harmonic without losing the low end or high end. however, it's largely impossible to appreciate without an additional low pass as it's still fundamentally a subtractive synth whose oscillators need to be sculpted in the high end.
JORB! Hope those 3 hours go by quickly
HA thank you I'm breaking my fast already
Nice job man. Great overview. Very cool machine.
@@DoctorRevers thank you! Yeah I think it's great
Excellent video! Do you think this synth is a great next synth to add to the Mother-32, DFAM, and Sunharmonicon trio? I also have a 104hp eurorack case filled with utilities, clocking, and modulation for the Mother-32, DFAM, and Subharmonicon. Would this be a great addition to that trio (Sound Studio) and if it would play well with it?
I have the ONA as well as an extra voice. Added the FONT as the filter.
The reason i like Jorb is that he uses the word Jam as a verb, as it should be...
Clocking with an Osc 😱 He must be stopped.
I can see the power of Labyrinth. The open minded part of me likes it, but the nostalgia-motivated side of me, not so much. Hmmm.
Very nice.
very nice musical examples
thx for the review. doesnt seem like my cup of tea tbh this labyrinth. i could probably do similar things with my sub37 for the vco and some max4live ableton plugins to get that sequencer thingy, then again, not into modular at all. Too expensive and not musical enough for me, ie I like poly's, I like things I can poweron and play that are in key. Life's too short
Modular is a lot of fun, but I’m glad I got out early. Some very simple tasks end up costing a lot of money!
Great video!
About the 'swing trick'. I was planning to send a midi clock signal from Ableton to the Labyrinth, but that won't give me any swing (of course). Do you know any other 'swing tricks' for people who don't own any other Eurorack gear? Thanks
I don’t get the seq amount knobs in the VCO circuit. These could be switches, IMO. There are already attenuators next to the sequencer LED’s.
@@PWMaarten is a lot more flexible when you can modulate them but not at V/octave. Maybe an osc is patched as an lfo, and you are just changing its rate per step. Etc etc etc
@@JorbLovesGear fair enough, I retract my previous statement. For modulation purposes the attenuator makes perfect sense.
Edit: I never replied this fast!
It's nice! Thanks for the video! What osciloscope are you using? Been after one for a while, looks like a good one
I didn’t really like this synth for some reason. I don’t really know what it does. They all say it’s a percussion synth yet all I hear are melodies. 32 or mother can probably do that
You don’t have to route the CV from the sequencers to pitch- just use it to modulate other parameters. The sequencing and modulating routing is what this synth is about (same with dfam and subharm imo). What it “does” is really up to you.

Moog came back from the dead with this.
@@MarcasLancaster we got the spectravox not that long ago, and the mavis before that... They were hardly "dead"
@@JorbLovesGear I meant in terms of relevance to myself.
A bit too much distortion going on for me, covers up the sound of the unit. Love that you've got a saw wave going, although the cost is too high for me. Very metallic sounding machine without it.
What kind of filter is it? A ladder filter? I am guessing so. Do you lose a lot of bass? The filter and the residents sound amazing.
@@RJ1J wavefolding can sound harsh, without it or the mixer drive it would all be low harmonic waves.
2 pole, but I'm not sure of the exact architecture. Presumably a ladder, man I can't believe I didn't mention that.
