Generac Generator gas leak simple fix!

- Here’s a simple fix to solving an annoying gas leak from the carburetor which is common in Generac generators. My Generac GP5500 was leaking gas after sitting idle for several weeks.

Thank you so much. I was trying to get ready Milton, and my heart sunk when I saw gas leaking. I tried what you said, and it worked perfectly. Now I don't have to try and find another generator 2 days before the storm.
YO!!!! thank you so much 😅. I've done what you said. It would start and shut off. So I got a small hammer and tapped the carburetor to help loosen up the gunk, and it started like nothing. Thanks again
I ordered a whole new carb for it to not fix the problem. Lol

This is just what I needed to hear! Thanks man! I was getting ready to take apart the whole carb (for the first time) and happened upon your video. I did the exact same thing leaving the fuel lever in the ON position! Put it away in the garage and had a decent leak in no time! I’ll turn it off and hopefully that’ll work!

It didn't come on once I tried putting it on with the fuel gauge off and all, but after trying a few times, by the time I turned on the gauge, it normalized. Thanks again

Thanks!! I have a 5000 with the same issue. Worked great!! We lost power this morning as result of a snow storm. I needed power to charge my work computer. After performing the steps that you suggested, my generator has been running without leaking for 2 hours.

I have the Generac pressure washer that has been leaking gas. I took the carb off and replaced three gaskets and two o-rings and it still leaks🤷♂️🤦♂️. I’m going to try your suggestion next. 🙏

I have had this same problem with a different model. I've been leaving that fuel switch in the "on" position after use... Darn... Smh Shame on me! And I even wondered one day if that mattered. Welp apparently, it does. Thanks for this video!

1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards.
2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house.
3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules.
4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but did you try to crank it up in the ON position while gas was leaking out to see if it would start, stabilize and stop the leak?
Sorry for late reply. Honestly it was so long ago I don’t recall, but the leak was extremely slow so I don’t think it was still dripping when I started it.
do you always cut the fuel off and let it run dry? I have cut the fuel off, and let it run for a bit, but not until it runs completely out..wrong?

Yes I always let it run dry until the fuel is completely gone. That’s really the only way to prevent this phenomenon from happening In my opinion.

I used my cell phone - I believe it was the only option I had.
I do t know why phone designers dont just turn the efing camera 90deg then everyone will be happy, cos to be honest it feels goofy to film with 2 hands on a tiny phone.
