Some interesting facts about feet in the Vietnam war. The vietnamese noticed that Americans love to kick things, so they put traps inside coconuts. Also they made traps called punji pits which were just sharpened bamboo spikes inside of holes. They realized the GI's could see them easier so they made them just small enough for a foot to step in. They were also tipped with human feces to cause even worse infections. GI's then started putting some sort of armor on the soles of their shoes so the vietnamese countered that by making the trap wider and connecting 2 spiked boards with a strap. The soldier would step on the strap and into the hole causing the jaws to come up and poke into the easily punctured canvas sides of the boot, still causing damage and infection. Feet are super important.
He called him Lt. Dan for two reasons, One he served under him and he respects him regardless of the way Dan treats him in return. Two when Dan lamented to him over the loss of his legs and mentioned his own name in rank in passing Forrest said this and only this in response "You're still Lr. Dan." As simple minded as that sounds he pretty much told Taylor he's still who he is legs or no legs and while it took him a while he managed to realize that.
probably it was meant to emphasize, or rather serve as a nod to, the fact that in the military, there was no color distinction, and the two (gump and bubba) bonded so much during training that any notion of a race barrier to them is non-existent, acting as if they were like brothers, hence the obviously rhetorical question "are you twins?" But it also evokes the race struggle back home, maybe contrasting how these two different worlds (military and civilian life) viewed race. I think the looking at each other was for comedic effect. It's also to prevent a horrible condition known as "Trench Foot", which soldiers were exposed to with prolonged exposure to moist, cold and damp conditions that their feet are in. Since it was shown that Forrest, Bubba and the platoon were walking through streams and wet ground, their feet are exposed to these aforementioned conditions. Lt. Dan Taylor even established the routine doings of changing socks anytime they stopped, which is because sweat can cause Trench Foot, but has a lower and more progressive risk of doing so.

I remember this song in my mind in 2006 flying into Southern Iraq. This was my Uncle's favorite song when i used to listen to it on the old 45 RPM records in the very early 1970's when Uncle came back from Vietnam on his way to Fort Campbell.I guess every generation of soldiers had their theme song of their era. While i was in Iraq i had this uploaded into my laptop and would wake me up as an alarm to get ready for a patrol or convoy.Yep i was just a soldier like my Uncle and my Dad.....
Forrest Gump is a great movie. Funny and dramatic all in one. This scene has both. It’s sad to see him be sad to leave his mom behind but funny when he meets his PL for the first time. I can relate to all of it now after going through my experiances...
They are so right about the feet. I have spent my life fishing in the Mekong and the reservoirs around it in Thailand and Laos. If you do not dry your feet every time you get out of the water, they corrode. Imagine the worst zombie feet you can, and then double it, and you are getting near what happens.
@@chiefmojorising1 They ARE CG helicopters. In addition to the famous scenes blending Forrest in with JFK, LBJ, etc., ILM did a lot of CG shots multiplying extras. Most of the extras in the football and Washington rally scenes are CG copies of a few hundred extras repositioned and cut together. Even a big-budget movie like Forrest Gump isn't going to track down and rent two dozen Hueys for one shot.

This scene shows that Lt. Dan: 1 Does care about the lives of his men, at least initially; 2 Understands that the most basic instinct of any grunt is to survive; 3 Gives very pragmatic survival tips; 4 Is willing to share some welfare with new guys who don't even have any footing in his unit.
Forrest Gump mom's best line in the whole movie is at 0:19 of this clip right before Fortunate Son by Bob Dylan is played. Sally Field (Forrest's mom) says " You come back to me ya hear"?
sang yeon youn I thought that part was interesting also. My grandfather who was an adviser in Vietnam before the Gulf of Tonkin false flag saw Forrest Gump with me when it came out in the theaters. He told me he never would have saw it if he knew it had the hollywood Vietnam bs in it. Anyways I asked him if there were that many hueys regularly when he was there, he said way way more, they were carrying in endless streams of material and men at times.
Love the irony how he says to keep good care of your feet and then he loses his and also said not to do anything stupid and the Forrest saves him by risking his life to save his.
In my history class we did a song analysis of songs written during the Vietnam era to look at the sociopolitical mindset of the time. When they played this song a girl in my class said this. "This was from forrest gump" She had never seen the rain I guess.
my grandpa went 4 years to vietnam during the indochina war. He also told me they had a lot of booze (wine for us), and that "feet thing" is quite accurate ! Luckily for me he made it
The shot of a mother hugging her son. The shot of a silhouetted helicopter panning out to a machine gun. The shot of a battle hardened soldier looking disdainfully at two green eyed rookies with wide eyes. Everything about this scene is literally movie perfection.
"And A Hard Rain Fell" by John Ketwig is an excellent books to read about a young man's experience in Vietnam. What a horrible war that was. We sent boys over there into a hellhole.
***** WOW!! we had more wars then I thought. I guess they where just mentioning the ones they knew the audience would know and be most aware off. I didnt even know off the Mexican one.
I have so many friends who were in all US military branches from 8 American Wars including Vietnam. My uncles father was in the army for 28 years and was even a colonel and was in Vietnam. It is unfortunate I never got to really talk to him almost at all before he passed away in September. He has been in Huey's and all. He did have nightmare's of his helicopter shot down and his own men dying right next to him and all but I heard some real cool stuff about him. They did go through a ton but those who did survive, many are actually some of the coolest and nicest people and can tell you many things about this war many don't know and it is amazing the stuff they can tell you. A friend of mine was also a USMC sniper over there for 2 or 3 tours and it is a shame how they were treated when they returned cause they were just doing what they had no choice to do or prison or die. Many are great people too. Another friend of mine is a Vietnam Navy veteran and he had a father in the 82nd Airborne and this friend is just all around a good guy to talk to. You can truly only imagine what some went through but you still want to keep in touch with those you know who served cause they love someone who understands and appreciates their service and sacrifice. For me, I am a huge supporter in appreciation for veterans of any war so I make sure to keep in touch with my veteran friends I can.
>Vietnam war movie >Fortunate Son by Credence Clearwater Revival starts playing >Children refuse to look into history and understand our past and would rather focus on social media and current events
"IT'S JUST A MOVIE"????, Like any story well told, with sophistication, and complexity, this one connects with abstract truths that pass right by us under normal circumstances. Watching these scenes, so carefully crafted to a high degree of accuracy, and ambience is "extremely powerful" for me and millions of others. Despite some inexactness, or inevitable misrepresentations, there are many powerful themes, classical and contemporary contained in it. While the Author may not have meant it. Forest in one sense represents all young soldiers, certainly in Vietnam, but all wars. In one sense, no matter how brave, consciously valorous, intelligent, or trained a soldier is, all warriors are in a sense mentally debilitated, when the power of (Self Preservation), (Adrenaline), (Ear Piercing fear), and (confusion) grip you. When an inexperienced boy enlists, or is drafted, the obliviousness, is beyond belief for most recruits. We all have to die, but why do so many humans choose to end life for themselves, or others before they have a chance to fully love the family they die to protect? The humor is great and gives reality to scenes, because people use sardonic gallows humor in the face of fear, and uncertainty. The meaning viewers attach to these scenes are extremely potent. View them with respect.
Ltn. Dan: "take care of your feet" and "try not to do anything stupid to get yourself killed" Also Ltn. Dan: Looses his feet and tries to get himself killed.
To all veterans of the Vietnam war: I had family who fought in Vietnam. I heard how veterans were treated by a school assembly and I’m truly sorry for the way you were treated. You deserved better.
You ever pause and realize just how much Forrest's mom must be constantly worrying over him knowing what he has to face on his own in the world? Yet she holds her fear back and believes in him when nobody else will so he has the confidence to succeed in life despite his limitations, like that is some damn good parenting!

Have a scumbag friendly fire scene, have a war is pointless scene, have a can't win em all metaphor, have The Doors, Hendrix, CCR, and Stones/Motown music ambiance, cast nobody who was even in the war, deliberately leave out any media interpretation, don't show how the other side fought other than the tunnels, body bags everywhere scenes, lead characters getting fucked up on something scene, war is a racket scene, lead character learns a moral lesson scene.
well , if sergeant is not battle hardent , he proboly is dead in that war :D
You basically just described the entirety of the Vietnam segments in Black Ops.
I mean... they totally skipped the War of 1812.
and mexico, spanish american, korean, .... whatever

It sure is. LoL
You twins?
.... No, we are not relations, Sir. 🤣😝
This movie made me listen to 3 songs:
"Fortunate Son"
"Soul Kitchen"
"All Along the Watchtower"
Exactly the same happend to me with the only difference being that i discouvered a 4th instant classic for my playlist. Listen to "Califonia Dreamin' " from the mamas and the papas. It also appeares during the Vietnam part of the movie after Bubba convinces Forrest to join his Shrimp buisness after the war
and also "For What It's Worth"
I also really enjoyed "Free Bird".
People are strange
Not going to lie, as a 12 year old when this movie came out, I quickly became a fan of The Doors thanks to this soundtrack
As somebody who went in the army, i can tell: Lt. Dan was a great leader!
agree to the disagree
Willingly die when still alive ...yeah..that'd hard officer to find
Guys who served in the Army don’t say they went in the Army, unless they’re talking about taking a crap. 😀
@@jwf1964 its a kid probably lol
"was a great leader!"? You know he's not real, right?

Sonny Anderson 😂
🤣🤣🤣 that line just killed me
kitty 1905 me too! One of the funniest scenes in the movie! 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍👍

The "You twins?" scene cracks me up every time. The face of Lt. Dan after Forrest's response is hilarious 😂
Wish movies like this were made more often :/
Yeah but if anyone tried to make a movie like Forrest Gump today, it would never be remotely close to pipping Forrest Gump
Yeah
It was ok, pretty dumb putting him in every historical event of his time period though.
@@LordTalax It's a movie, they can really do whatever they want and it was clearly a gag.... weird to see this criticism often tbh

Forrst Gump is one of my most favorite of movies. "I sure hope I don't let him down." was one of the funniest moments in this movie,
This is Gary Sinise's best performance so far, absolutely gripping
Always bought tears to my eyes, especially after the hurricane. Gary Sinese played an amazing role in this movie
Of Mice and Men was good too. He played the heck out of his role there
@@Dakid015 added to watchlist, thx
I saw this movie years ago, and it's only just now that I'm picking up on the "take good care of your feet" foreshadowing.
That was a given in Vietnam !! The "crud" that could infect your fee could ruin you and make life so miserable !! Always try to have dry socks and keep dry- impossible though !!
I think that there's an unwritten rule that to make a proper Vietnam war scene you MUST have CCR music to accompany it. Thank you veterans.
"Somebody in his family had fought and died in every. Single. American war."
Korean war: "Am I a joke to you?"
They do call it the "Forgotten War".
@@crazy4sian I know, my guy.
Also forgot War of 1812, Mexican War and Spanish-American War.
A Police Action lol
America was technically never in the Korean war. They were under the flag of the UN.
FNGs = F**king new guys. FYI.
Is that really what that stands for?
TheAaronmcmahon11 Yep. Military shorthand / slang, almost any branch.
Never knew that
Well, I thought it was Fresh New Grads or Guns 😂
@@danielappleton153 huh, must be an army thing. in USMC we just call em boots
Lt Dan in the film was an outstanding officer. Clear and to the point without educated and arrogant jargon. He was in the wrong branch but im biased. God bless all our Vietnam veterans. Oorah!
This movie is a must see for all generations
Forrest Gump never fails to make me cry. It's a perfect film.
No it isn't.
It's good, but Family Guy makes fun of it's issues perfectly.
Any vietnam scene in a movie has to be preceded by CCR music. Its just the law.
What about All Along the Watchtower Hendrix version?
Helicopters and Fortunate son fits so well and perfectly that no one can change it...
Travis Smith Yep i remember that one as "let the Hadjis hit the floor".
Iraq was tough, sir?
Good job
Sorry but i really wonder that , did US Soldiers rape iraqi womens ?
reddevilparatrooper thank you for your service.
Always tears me up when he leans into his momma 😢 I loves this movie as a kid and still do it just holds up so well
Forrest Gump is a great movie. Funny and dramatic all in one. This scene has both. It’s sad to see him be sad to leave his mom behind but funny when he meets his PL for the first time. I can relate to all of it now after going through my experiances...
That "You better tuck that in.. gonna get that caught in a trip wire" line from Lt. Dan still gets me in stitches
Underrated line
2:12- I like it how they had to look at each other for a couple seconds to remind themselves they aren't twins!
Fun Fact: "Vietnam" was actually filmed in South Carolina
They are so right about the feet. I have spent my life fishing in the Mekong and the reservoirs around it in Thailand and Laos. If you do not dry your feet every time you get out of the water, they corrode. Imagine the worst zombie feet you can, and then double it, and you are getting near what happens.
such a beautifully filmed scene!!! Love all the Hueys flying in the background!!!
Yeah today it would have been stupid CG helicopters
+chiefmojorising1 Only if it was a low budget film.
Playing Fortunate Son during an intro to the Vietnam War is just freaking genius. Love that movie.
at the final of the movie LT. dan became one of the realest friends of forres. and that was so heart wharming.he even repaired his legs and attended to forrest marriage. that's truly the best frinedship i've even seen into a movie
Those two rules still applies in every war! I fought in 3 tours in Iraq as an infantryman. It was literally as simple as that and you had a great chance of survival.
( Lt. Dan ) Whats wrong with your lip ? ( Bubba ) I was born with big gums sir. ( Lt. Dan ) Well you better tuck that in , your gonna get that caught on a trip wire.
FUNNY AS SHIT !!!!
🤣💀
That chopper landed soo smooth!!!
This scene shows that Lt. Dan:
1 Does care about the lives of his men, at least initially;
2 Understands that the most basic instinct of any grunt is to survive;
3 Gives very pragmatic survival tips;
4 Is willing to share some welfare with new guys who don't even have any footing in his unit.
He was always tellin us to "get down" and "shut up"
GET DOWN!
SHUT UP!
Forrest Gump mom's best line in the whole movie is at 0:19 of this clip right before Fortunate Son by Bob Dylan is played. Sally Field (Forrest's mom) says " You come back to me ya hear"?
(1:15) That is a lot of Hueys.
sang yeon youn look at all those chickens
sang yeon youn that's a lot of fish
sang yeon youn I thought that part was interesting also. My grandfather who was an adviser in Vietnam before the Gulf of Tonkin false flag saw Forrest Gump with me when it came out in the theaters. He told me he never would have saw it if he knew it had the hollywood Vietnam bs in it. Anyways I asked him if there were that many hueys regularly when he was there, he said way way more, they were carrying in endless streams of material and men at times.
bob person I think that was a reference to Jurassic Park
+sang yeon youn I always thought that was sort of meant to be a joke
Love the irony how he says to keep good care of your feet and then he loses his and also said not to do anything stupid and the Forrest saves him by risking his life to save his.
In my history class we did a song analysis of songs written during the Vietnam era to look at the sociopolitical mindset of the time.
When they played this song a girl in my class said this.
"This was from forrest gump"
She had never seen the rain I guess.
my grandpa went 4 years to vietnam during the indochina war. He also told me they had a lot of booze (wine for us), and that "feet thing" is quite accurate ! Luckily for me he made it
This is definitely one of the best movies ever. I hope many more generations watch and enjoy it
My grandfather and great uncle fought in this war and I can’t imagine what they went through
God bless them for their service ✝🕊💖
The shot of a mother hugging her son.
The shot of a silhouetted helicopter panning out to a machine gun.
The shot of a battle hardened soldier looking disdainfully at two green eyed rookies with wide eyes.
Everything about this scene is literally movie perfection.
"And A Hard Rain Fell" by John Ketwig is an excellent books to read about a young man's experience in Vietnam. What a horrible war that was. We sent boys over there into a hellhole.
When the trees start speaking about different kinds of shrimp and all the ways to cook them
I am the lorax i speak for the trees, and for some reason they are speaking vietnamese
I’d take notes and then shoot them an hour later
Such an important and meaningful movie. A mirror for everyone of us, our life choices and what really matters in life.
I love how Lieutenant dan ask you twins putting aside their colour, even if it was a joke still a beautiful moment
0:44 Thats a nice landing
Every single American War?? they forgot the war of 1812 and the Korean in the 50s
That's why people call the Korean war as the forgotten war. The director apparently forgot about it too.
LOL.... you are so right!!

Yes, the cold and cruel irony
Ironic. He could save others, but not himself.
When Lieutenant Dan asks if their twins and they have to pasue and check just made my day. Love this movie so much
Lt. Dan nailed it. Best army advice I can give to new recruits is take care of your feet 🦶 👣
That chopper pilot that dropped that bird in on a dime at :50 was a focking pro !
they can do whatever they want 'cuz it's a movie, if it was real, i will clap and jump of from the chopper
It was probably Robert Mason.
That lake scene was great. You can see Forrest face , he was sad and scared. Comfort a of mother.

Ltn. Dan: "take care of your feet" and "try not to do anything stupid to get yourself killed"
Also Ltn. Dan: Looses his feet and tries to get himself killed.

The first time I saw this movie I was about 15 year old and I was totally amazed. I have started to be interested about 60´and music of this era.
Your never to young to have a Vietnam flashback...
this movie is simply wonderful. one of those i can't help watching over and over and each time something gets into my eyes
I am a retired combat vet and my dad was a Vietnam vet...so this hits home
My dad was to.
Before I went, my WWII marine dad told me "never volunteer, keep your bowels open, and your feet dry."
They should've had Forrest interviewed by Adrian Cronauer ( " Good Morning Vietnam " ). :)
Never get tired of this movie. This clip always get me 🤣🤣🤣
You ever pause and realize just how much Forrest's mom must be constantly worrying over him knowing what he has to face on his own in the world? Yet she holds her fear back and believes in him when nobody else will so he has the confidence to succeed in life despite his limitations, like that is some damn good parenting!
As a wounded combat vet of the Vietnam War, I have to say that 'Forrest Gump' was one of the best movies I've ever seen. One thing though...We never had a door on our 'toilets'.
