To be honest, Joe Taslim as Sub Zero is perfect casting
If they can get Iko Uwais as Kuai Liang for the sequels, then The Raid pair will be reunited once again. Plus, I Can Buy Iko Uwais as Joe Taslim’s younger brother.

@@mightydiverse3812 nah kano and kabal saved the entire middle of the movie. This shit did not live up to the hype. I loved Lewis tan in wu assassin but he was seriously miscast. As was mileena reiko and nitara. Jax looked the part but these people are shit actors
@@nicholasbennett7367 did u check my review? Check out my you may understand. Kano would have done good but mis-used, talkative for less seriousness as a gang leader and a Sonyas follower/fake ally. Kabal shouldn't even be as it's a reboot not a continuity, especially with no Striker and with his fast move but still being intercepted by Liu kang (again mis-used). Only Sub-zero parts that's it.
The sequel either needs to kill off Cole Young or make him a supporting character.
Making the movie about him was a mistake.
If the kill him in the beginning I think it will win over everyone
If they went with that but... well, make his true birth nake Liu Kang and reveal that later.... that'd have been more interesting and play off of the original movie's 'Liu went to America'.

As a huge scorpion fan, this movie is flawless for me. They finally did scorpion right. And Kano was by far the best part of the movie. That really surprised me.

Like it? We fucking loved it! Of course more would have been pretty damn sweet, but what little we got was fucking awesome!
I mean we have no control over how much screen time our favorite characters get, so I don't wanna spend time focusing on not getting that. I wanna focus on what I enjoyed. It definitely left me craving more, & that's a good thing if they're really planning on more movies!

Sorry for spoilers: but the Johnny Cage tease is there, when Shang Tsung mentions bringing armies, I thought of Baraka, and it would be great to see Shao Khan and Kitana post-Mileena death
Brian Thompson should come back as Shao Kahn for the sequel to Mk 2021 if we get one. We had no original actors come back to reprise there roles so I think to have at least one it should be Shao Kahn.
I loved it. Mortal kombat yet again is the best video game movie of all time. Both 1995 and the 2021 version they both hold the same spot.
Exactly. Loved this movie, it was unbalanced but when that got it right goddamn did they get it right.
I didn't like the plot, but once I started watching it like cut scenes like the game. I enjoyed the rest of it! SUB-ZERO has always been my favorite!!!
They really made sub zero into a complete beast in this movie.
I honestly thought I'd come out of this thinking well that was fun....never did I think I'd come out thinking wow...the original 1995 film is a much better told story! What a weird story choice on this and the superhero vibes were not the way to go. Kano, sub zero and the fights are all good but the story here is terrible. I won't spoil anything but it is not the way it should have been told. Cody is right that if you aren't a fan of the games you might be a bit lost but even as a huge fan of the games I was still like wtf is this? Such a shame I wanted it to be good but it really isn't when you take the love of the game out of it..its just...its just not that good at all.

I will say watching this in the theater was like watching Avengers Endgame it was a bunch of genuine fans marking out over things in this movie like when Scorpion says "Get over here". Also my favorite character is Raiden

@@slippinjimmy3217 it is faithful to the games when it comes to the violence and that is the only good thing about the movie. The lore is not accurate, script is bad, plot is bad. The cast was awesome though just not a good movie that will be remembered as a classic.

They really should have included a flashback SHOWING Bo Rai Cho training a young Liu kang. Would have made that scene where Liu Kang talks about his past so much more powerful and allowed us to see yet another character from the lore. It could have been just 15-20 seconds.
I think Liu lang will be a big focus in the next film.

i agree completely! really loved this film as a mk fan. gotta say theres a scene which i wont spoil that really got me cracking up harder then i have in years, when during a fight they actually make an inside joke about how people spam moves, which i have both had to deal with in online matches and in arcades. that alone that sold this movie for me lol

Just watching it with my friends, who grew up playing it with me all the time was such a great experience. All the sub-zero fights were badass as fuck.
I wish Sonya Blade was the main character instead of Cole.

I just finished watching it and I personally giving it a 7.5/10. I liked what I saw except some of the character designs, the background settings lacking color, and a couple of the villains dying in their first fight(Nitara). I didn’t mind Cole Young that much but he was kinda uninteresting. I also liked how most of the villains didn’t lose their first fights

There are flaws to be sure, but it's greater than the sum of the individual parts. Watch it in the afternoon, don't pay full price. I'm not looking for a 1 to 1 remake of the game or previous movie. They really need to get rid of Tan (Cole Young) for the next movie to be better.
Having a completely new character be the focus makes no sense. The majority of people watching this film are mortal kombat fans who dont need everything explained to them. Just make a full out mortal kombat movie

Well, just got finished watching this, well...
I found it to be rather forgetful, I enjoyed the fight sequences to a degree, the effects were pretty good with the best ones for Raiden and Sub Zero, Sub Zero was the standout character for me and lived up to his name, the rest were pretty by the numbers.
It is nowhere as good as the 1995 movie, that was far more simpler, better acted, better cast and the set pieces by the sea and Chinese temples were what Mortal Kombat should be, it should be in fantastical places, not in someone's barn or trailer park like the new one.
I think that having the chosen ones inheriting the dragon tattoo was wholesale copying Annihilation for me with those flying animals inhibiting the fighters, it felt really weird.
I also think the new film should have and would have made more sense as a TV series. That's why the online series Legacy worked so well because it was broken into chapters and each character was given their own stories and time to shine, it made sense, the new one at times felt like a poorer version of the online series and felt extremely rushed as well.
There wasn't even any great locations in the new film, it was just an Australian wasteland with rocks that looked straight outa Annihilation or Mad Max and I really disliked how all the fighters were sharing the same stages with their fights. In the 95 movie, all the fights had their own special stages and no one person went back to the same stage for a fight, they all had their own special moments with memorable locations. I just think that the new one was definitely a prequel to an actual tournament but at least the 95 film felt like a tournament and had finality at the end when they all walked out to that Orbital music with all the children, it was far more satisfying and fulfilling as an ending.
We should never just be comparing films but it has to be compared because that 95 film is one of the best examples of adaptions done right. I did enjoy the blood and mature nature of the new film though and I presume many will love it just for that but films are more than just violence, they have to work on multiple levels and I just felt the new one left me empty afterwards and I don't get why they had such a forgettable music score throughout the film yet used a remix of Techno Syndrome in the end credits, it just felt really weird.
I have to disagree with the 95 movie being better. Being a 90s kid and loving mortal kombat I loved that movie but the movie I saw last night was so much more true to the game. Yeah alot of the plot didnt make sense and I didnt like some directions they took like having Cole young the focus and killing goro ( they did goro bad in this movie) but it still was a better movie than the 95 movie I think.

I hate not being a fan of this movie but after the killed goro so quick felt like I couldn't take the movie serious anymore

Just finished watching it and it delivered what I wanted overall. Awesome brutal action and loved how it focused on scorpion and sub-zero as characters. This is a movie that's based on a fighting game, so you shouldn't be expecting some massive story line that will carry it. Pure fan service that delivered for me.

I hope he watches the animated one. Mortal Kombat: Scorpions Revenge. It was personally my favorite MK movie. Gore was awesome. Characters were spot-on. Story was great.
If you rewatch iron fist on nextflix, lewis tan plays the drunken master who guards the hands base in China. He played a better drunken master than Jackie Chan.
I really enjoyed it. As a 40 year old dude who played the original trilogy on SNES as a child and loved it, and saw the first movie as a kid (and loved it). I was pleased. Looking forward to the next one! Agree hard about that song. I kept doing it out loud during the movie myself.
I love the back and fort between Kano and Sonya Blade along with their fight scenes. This was definitely a vast improvement from the disaster that MK: Annihilation and it'll be interesting to see where they'll go with the sequels. #BringinJohnnyCage
Watching it right now & I can already tell that one day in the future I want a Sub-zero vs Scorpion movie.For what it is so far it's a kickass movie that does the source material justice & I'm right there with you Cody with Kano,I've never really cared about his character but he's the most entertaining person in the movie & is surprisingly funny as hell lol.

I have to disagree on Scorpion and Subzero. I thought they are much more menacing and mysterious without a back story. It dehumanizes them making them perfect killing machines. No, the focus on Liu Kang, Johny Cage and Sonya Blade was a stroke of genius, like the 2021 would prove 25 years later.
It’s like if you had T2 focus on T1000 vs T800 backstory, instead of Sarah and her son’s journey.
Also muted ninjas without a moving mask is another amazing idea + a voice that comes from beyond. It’s like they use an artificial English language to communicate with the opponents. Very cool idea that takes away problems like- japanes or chinese ninjas speaking English as we see them moving their mask. For me it’s a cheaper look and concept.
But, as always- great video!
PS- Kano is not consistent with his character arc. It started great but finished badly. Because he is one of few that has a character arc.
Also- Kung Lao was so waisted :(

Just watched and i loved it, one of the best video game adaptations despite some flaws, Kano and Sub-Zero are the perfection of the movie along with the fights and the gore

I think we did already get good video game movie with the original movie I think for video game adaptation that was solid. Besides that I like the first Resident Evil as its own movie but not as a adaptation.
I enjoyed it Cody, just thought the main guy should have been Cage as he was the weakest thing about the whole thing.

After seeing a lot of reviews now, yours is my favorite! It's how I felt & it's nice to connect with another fan that way. Because of the age gap(& the huge difference in the newer games) between old school fans & the younger ones, we don't see this film the same way. That's not a bad thing by any means because they help us keep MK alive! It's just an observation I've made from reading comments. It's interesting to me anyway. All the different things that are important to each of us. At the end of the day, we are all MK fans & that's the only thing that matters!

This movie gave me a new love for Sonya, honestly. She’s always seemed boring for some reason, until this movie.
Kano was played perfectly by this actor. He embodies Kano to me, from now on. He even resembles his design in the most recent games.
Wish they would have added Kano's implant for his eye when he shoots his lasers. Looks weird without it when he's shooting it. Didn't understand why they needed those arcana tattoos in the plot.
We already have a good video game movie which is Silent Hill and nothing has come close to beating it,🤷🏽♂️ on the other hand this movie was very unimpressive and the best part is the opening sequence which was for the most part the initial 15 minutes of the movie... Cole's character was bland and pretty much uninteresting... now if Scorpion was the one to take possession of Cole and get revenge on Sub-Zero it would have been a much better movie, and why Scorpion even needed Cole’s help fighting Sub-Zero lol ...
This is MK's answer to the Star Wars prequels, a lengthy build-up that teases the thing you want without being the thing. And just like Anakin, Cole is a protagonist best left on the cutting room floor. It feels lazy and relies heavy on references like an Ian Flynn video game comic script. But it does reward the viewer with a pretty cool episode of Super Power Beat Down at the end, even though the majority of the film does nothing to build it up.
Once Kano said “Kano Wins” I knew the movie was going to have a ton a Easter eggs used amazingly

The last three games have their own story Modes that are specifically for fleshing out the characters, scenarios, etc. hopefully in the future they do go deeper into the mythology cause there’s TONS of character and story they could incorporate

Loved the fights and fatalities but the story and most of the characters compared to the 90’s original one where way better.
Raiden, Shang Tsung, Lui Kang, Sonya all had better character development in the 90’s version.

The only thing this film is held down by is its hopes of a franchise and sequel. It feels 100% as a setup for the tournament to begin and to introduce this new MK universe. As a fan you can fill in the missing blanks like I did. But as a non fan and general consumer I can see how it would leave you hanging and feeling like it just jumped around real quick and ended.
Hopefully the sequels are green lighted and given more heavy budgets. Let this film be the setup and allow us to get even greater payoffs in the next ones.
What they should've done was similar to the marvel movies. Have multiple movies that build up to the actual tournament. Movies that show the history/backstory of most of the characters.
1st movie should've only focused on Scorpion and Sub-Zero(Shyria-Ryu vs. Lin-Kuei)
2nd movie: Jax and Sonya hunting down Kano and the black dragon clan
3rd movie: Focus on Johnny Cage
4th: Shaolin Monks (Liu Kang and Kung Lao)
5th: MORTAL KOMBAT tournament

About the theme song, this is a reboot, it's not even suppose to use the original movie soundtrack, yet I liked how they adapted it and used it in some parts and in the credits.
I’m team Scorpion all the way. I was 10 when the original movie came out and my local Pizza Hut had an arcade for MK2 so I was obsessed (and still am) with Mortal Kombat and I am really looking forward to seeing if they can keep the awesome momentum going with these new movies.
So many filmmakers/sound editors are so obsessed with doing these big, epic, melodramatic, intense, etc. scores and honestly I’m over it. Less is more. I agree with your thoughts on the Mortal Kombat theme. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Sometimes i forward to Cody's reviews more than the actual films, this is one such instance
Two quick takeaways :
1. Are we supposed to know who this Joe Tsalim guy is before this? Ppl are talking that way but def never heard of him.
2. I enjoyed most of this fight scenes but I really really would have enjoyed an actual tournament style part in here even if it didn't end up being the focus. I feel like that was a missed opportunity

The 1995 the direct to video animated movie tie-in "Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins" explains the story better than any of the films did.

I’m praying that this film makes a lot of money at the box office, so I can get a sequel. I loved this remake😊. The one flaw I will agree with you on is that they do not utilize that iconic soundtrack from the 1995 movie. The 1995 movie soundtrack had the perfect mixture of metal and electronic sounds. Every time I hear that Mortal Kombat song, I want to dance like rag dog in my room😁; so nostalgic🔥🔥🔥
As a scorpion fan I wished they could’ve put for of scorpion in there but the last battle between him sub-zero was just amazing
The only thing I disagree on with this review is when you said mortal kombat doesn't have a lot of story or lore. The comics and in some of the early games from like deadly alliance and deception actually expand on ALOT more of the characters, and their roles within the mk lore.

The only thing that follows the game story is the scorpion and sub zero story and even that was later revealed that Quan chi disguised as sub zero killed scorpions family. I dont know if theyll reveal that in later movies or not. Probably not
I thought it was absolutely horrible.
3/10 I liked Subzero and Scorpion, but that's about it. Kano was good, but the humor felt too forced. Weak acting, Outworld was so generic and lazy, the birthmark jumping around, the freaking Cole armor, all the villains dying at once. Sheesh that was really bad.

The action and the attention to MK detail was there, it was just the story that was really needing more - the Cole character was a creative touch but I think way more focus on Scorpion and Subzero instead would have been amazing as the "real" focus of the film with all the other characters - with plenty of Kano. There is the animated origins film of Scorpion and Subzero and a live action would be even better.
Correction: This does not follow the game plot at all. And it’s fine because it’s meant to be a prequel. In addition. The Game has done an excellent job in creating a story driven game ( the last three games did) and it’s a complete insult to netherealm for reviewers to keep same the game doesn’t have a great story
Watched it on HBO MAX, and I didn't hate it. Didn't love it either. I like the 1995 Film better, but the Blood and Guts were what they needed to be. Wasn't really that impressed with the Fight Choreography though. I guess I expected something extra, but they looked like every piece of Fight Choreography that I've seen since the 2010's. Yep, Shang Tsung was definitely disappointing. Bring Cary back for THAT Role.

I love the 1995 film and Annihilation from 1997 and Mk 2021 is pretty awesome and is worth revisiting again and again in my book. I bought it digitally on my ps4 recently because I actually had time to sit down and do it. I've been working so much lately that I haven't even had time to lay a finger on my ps4.
I completely agree.
The movie was a disappointment! The gore and special effects were better and the fights were okay, not great. The only fights I enjoyed were Scorpion's origin story and his fight with Sub-Zero. The rest of the fights seemed rushed and bit too short from what I would've expected. Kano getting his laser eye magically out of nowhere and same goes for Jax's arms? You've got to be joking. The scenery seemed limited and Johnny Cage wasn't there. Hanzo had another son who survived? Where was that in the MK lore Or did I miss something? And this was more like a failed assassination attempt towards the champions than a tournament. The budget all went to the first 7 mins of the movie. Everything after that was trash. Overall I give this a 4 out of 10.
If Cole was replaced with an actual MK character the movie would’ve been a lot better. Having said that, we still enjoyed it!
My biggest gripe with it was the new guy. Hated that they made a completely new character the vocal point of the whole movie.
It was ok , probably won’t watch it again.
I was so looking forward to this movie and while there's parts of it that i like... overall it was a letdown to me and the fact that cp has it rated higher then me has me stumped.
I'm starting to see a trend in Hollywood today. We started with movies based on a famous franchise that are universally loathed by fans and casual audiences, but then you have movies that are more warmly received by fans and casual audiences. Interesting, wouldn't you say?
