  • I grew some hydroponic celery this summer. Nature taught me some important lessons too.
    The green spongelike material I grow the plants in is Grodan rockwool.
    Nutrient Recipe
    2g MasterBlend Tomato 4-18-38
    2g Calcium Nitrate 15.5-0-0
    1g Epsom Salt
    1 Gallon or 3.8 Liters hose water
    Filmed on an iPhone6
    Edited with iMovie 10.1.5
    Voiceover recorded on a Blue Snowball ICE
    Music is from the second movement of Beethoven's 7th symphony.

    I feel like if I was Jeb I could do a story based on my Zantedeschia(took me ages to find that out) which would adequately depict the epicness of the strength of nature. It often gets to -20c where I live so a plant like this outside with a complete garden ignorer like me as its landlord is a feat in itself. it appeared after a flood 8 years ago out of nowhere, right next to my front door and I've never touched it, now its this giant behemoth which clones itself every year and becomes bigger.
    The local 'experts' are quite jealous that someone who does nothing could have such a beauty growing by the front door while they can't even do it within greenhouses. Its just started the autumn process of vanishing back into the ground. This video of yours has inspired me to document my nothingness and report on the wonder of nature ;-)

Tears of joy with the emergence of shoots, followed by tears of sorrow from the fallen soldiers, then to tears of joy with the realization in the end, there is still hope for the future. Truly a cinematic masterpiece representing man and natures struggle to survive with each other and finally join to become one. Bravo.

    • @zilym
      @zilym 7 років тому +3

      I'd guesstimate that it's about 2-3 times faster than dirt. But there are tradeoffs with all that speed. Fruit, like strawberries and tomatoes, never get as sweet and flavourful as the same plants growing in woodchip compost. Mild leafy greens that like cool weather, such as lettuce, seem to taste less bitter in hydroponics. Probably because all that extra growth speed means I can get to harvest before hot weather hits.

    Thanks Jeb, I'm learning
    Love to see you are recycling plant dirt, in The Netherlands I have a small aquaponics setup, with a worm-bin, the worm-tea gives me a nutriciant addition to the water for the last 4 years.

    Great video! As others have pointed out, your compost bin will eventually turn everything into great compost, but it'll take a long while and reek the whole time.
    A few things that could help both of those problems (unless you and your neighbors enjoy slow, smelly decomposition): Pop a bunch of holes in the bottom of the bin and put it on the dirt, and let the water drain out. Then, throw some "brown" materials in; stuff that's high-carbon, like paper, wood chips, and dried leaves. The smaller the pieces are, the better. Then, you can just let that mixture cook for a few months and you'll have some great compost. It might be good to stir it once a month though, or only the middle will break down. Either way, the smell will be gone with more carbon and less water.
    Also, there are some dangerous fungi that love standing water with rotting stuff in it. There are a few cases of people dying from inhaling some when they're close. So, yeah, you probably shouldn't let water stay stagnant in there. You could even just dump the bin out, then throw everything that was in there back into it (thereby ridding the bin of the stagnant water) and that would help on all fronts.
    Oh, and if there's standing water and a lot of rotting stuff, you'll attract bad bugs who want to lay their eggs in it. They'll eat a lot of your garden, and then their babies will hatch and eat the rest. Unless you use a lot of insecticide, you've probably experienced this to a degree already. Wet, high-nitrogen materials will bring a parade of weird, angry, anti-gardener bugs. You'll go from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony to Orff's "O Fortuna."

    The addition of wood ash to compost... looked it up and it turns out it can help maintain a healthy pH of your compost materials and add potassium and lime. Jeb, you have all the tricks!

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 років тому

      I did it for the minerals and stuff. I know the greens should be acidic and the ash basic, but I think the microbes will get it all settled down by the end.
