      But, quick question to anybody who can answer, if I try this method of plant growing, should I boil the water first to sterilize it and then wait for it to be room temp or is that a bad idea?

    How does this method compare with soil as far as growth rates and nutritional value are concerned? Do you never need to add more water, or do you have to add just the right amount at the start for transpiration to not remove all the water in the tub?
    How much energy is wasted by the plant having to grow such long roots and pull that water up a considerable height?

    we grow kratky every winter using plastic shoe boxes and varied hydro nutes that we test out. Its simple easy and effective growing technique and easier to control than hydro with air. Keep the containers cool and out of the sun you can easily bake them in a greenhouse. Winter growing of Italian Large Leaf basil is how I use it. And we make tons of pesto with it and use the leaves fresh. Purple basils do really well too. Nice lookin lettuces my lettuces were taking too long and basil is more flavorful, used in a lot of my frozen foods from the garden :) harder herbs dont grow well Kratky. Using RO water is important too. Hope that helps someone in the universe.

      Chemtrails? Uneducated conspiracy nutter, go back to Alex Jones.

    • @techcheck5019
      @techcheck5019 7 років тому +4

      Rainwater is a bit better than tap water, but keep in mind most of the things in tap water to keep it free of organisms like chlorine and fluoride. But they are in ridiculously small amounts, as well as normal rivers contain sodium fluoride and ocean water is high in it. It isn't a problem for plants at all, they don't magically accumulate it either. Seaweed is one of the most healthy plants.
      As far as chlorine, that is in tap water to try to reduce micro organisms in it. Believe it or not, but the human body requires chlorine in trace amounts.
      The percentage in tap water is usually 3 parts per million, meaning that in 1 million milliliters you would have 3 milliliters of chlorine. This means that for Americans you would have six 44 gallon drums of water, and the amount of chlorine in that amount of water would be not even 1 teaspoon of it.
      Also chlorine doesn't stay around for very long, if you leave someones pool and don't keep adding chlorine then algae will grow in it.
      Watering plants with tap water will not hurt them, you will not have magical chlorine sitting in the plants leaves, chlorine decays fast.
      So don't listen to conspiracy idiots like the vegan guy you are replying to, he isn't educated and just looks at stupid stuff like Alex Jones.

    this doesn't make sense to me... so what you just let the res get low on water and the plants get O2 from the air? wouldn't they dry out? how do you keep the interior moist enough? wouldn't your res get contaminated from organisms that prefer oxygen low environments? wouldn't your plants have used up the nutes a long time ago and/or the EC gone up enough to require the res be changed? this goes against everything I've learned of DWC. It was an entertaining video but it doesn't really explain much, just "this works" in a calm voice with music in the background....

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 років тому +44

      Yes the suspended roots collect air. They don't dry out because it is a plastic tote with a lid on top so the humidity is high. It might get contaminated, but apparently not enough to harm the plants. The EC goes up slightly but that usually works out because the plants are larger at that point.
      Kratky isn't better or worse than DWC it's just an alternative with it's own strengths and weaknesses. The funny thing is regardless of what we think the plants just keep growing and the finished product is the proof. Try it out and let us know how it worked for you!

    • @Taviddude
      @Taviddude 7 років тому +5

      Exactly. It may "Work", but not anywhere near optimal. They are growing some pretty forgiving crops there, and not on a large scale. Everything you've learned about hydro, and DWC is still true. PH, EC and Disolved O2 can all be maximized to produce more healthy robust growth. Large plants would empty that reservoir in a matter of a day, or two. Healthy roots are paramount to healthy growth. Diseased reservoirs are just that- diseased reservoirs. It's like feeding a person nothing but spam for breakfast lunch and dinner. Yeah, they'll live, I guess. Short lifecycle plants made for rapid consumption. Personally, I want my plants to be Healthy. I take pleasure and pride in giving them the care they need while truly understanding the entire process. Everyone wants to put Their name on something. If it works, let it ride. It's a totally neglectful way to grow a plant. I understand they appeals to people looking to dip a toe into a hydro type of growing, but a lot of bad habits would be revealed when they went head first. May as well just put it into dirt. Cool none the less.

      Kratky works, sorry. You are just going to have to accept that, the roots don't dry out as they are in humid air also.

    • @guardhousegames
      @guardhousegames 7 років тому +7

      I've used this about 7 years ago, so "kratky method" is a bunch of BS. It's just a lazy way to do hydro. The thing is that in small containers the air stone will create mist so the roots will stay moist even if the container is almost empty. Small and short plants like lettuce probably don't get bothered by EC/nute changes and will just take what they need until critical levels. Although it is probably unhealthy to eat these vegetables as they most likely intake all the salt and heavy metals depending on the nutes (most nutes will contain heavy metals). Without flushing the plants are keeping all the bad stuff in these but people are stupid.

    So, I remember learning in school that plants take in CO2 and then let off O2. This video says they take in O2 through their roots. Very puzzling. But a great video!

    So the Kratky Method is to do nothing?

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 років тому +5

      Well you have to set the grow up. Once it is going, if your reservoir is large enough you can return at the end to collect the harvest. Otherwise you have to add some water or nutrient solution if the plant isn't mature yet.

    • @grizzlycarp3580

      What nutrients do you use for all your growing, from seeding to mature plants 🌱 and great videos 🤓

    • @michaelwould
      @michaelwould 6 років тому

      Best also to use "Seedlings" over seeds that way roots hit the water right away and can start the process. You should also "seal" the lid or top so vapor does not come out but it is ok just makes the unit more efficient.

    Hi from the UK, Tikki O sent me over to learn more about the Kratky method, I have to congratulate you on a very informative, entertaining video.
    I'm going to spend the winter learning as much as I can on this method then start a set up in the spring as I have to grow outdoors or my wife will leave me lol
    Thanks very much for making this video and sharing it.
    I subbed to learn more from the master.
    All the best
    Steve

    Your videos have been very helpful. I walked into a hydroponics store last week and said I wanted to grow 6 heads of lettuce in my office, and asked them to put together a nutrient package for me. After 30 minutes of waiting, they gave me a very nicely printed sheet of nutrient mixtures to use per week. And it would only cost $100! Just for the nutrient solution -- no net cups, no rockwool, etc. So... about $16 per head of lettuce. WTF?
