It took me until viewing P3’s story again, but I think I know why Protag doesn’t react to the dark hour in the beginning. If Death has been living in him since he was a child, he’s probably experienced the dark hour multiple times in his life. It’s just become a part of his life, nothing unusual to him.
In Reload at least, this is not the case as you arent given the choice to say yes when directly asked if you know about the dark hour, but in the animated movies, he outright says yes and that he's experienced it for years.
To give an alternative reading of Jin/The Hermit, Persona as a series is centered on the importance of interpersonal relationships. The Hermit as a character who often rejects social interactions out right is likely also further commentary on the danger of not reaching out to others and isolating yourself from the broader community. When I was learning to read Tarot that was the first inverted reading i was given as an example.
Persona 3 came along and bumped FF7 out of my favorite game of all time spot. It warms the soul to see fresh deep cuts so many years later. Only the classics provide such longevity of analysis.
I've yet to play a "definitive" version of the game that knocks FF7 off my personal pedestal, but I do appreciate the layers of meaning that the game's tarot motifs and psychological examination ascribe to the narrative. I just think FF7 is way more fun to play.
So, I love this video, as someone who periodically will partake in tarot readings myself, both giving, and recieving. I really love hearing how each character links to their respective arcana. Though one thing that I think is a little overlooked, and I think you forgot to talk about it. Is how the Judgement arcana in the game, actually has a layer of symbolism, in the fact that, it is after death, and after them learning that Death is coming, and it's inevitable... that they come together, with their own judgement, their own understanding of life. You could even fit in the events that lead up to the final battle, after December 31st, into the other arcana, all leading up to Jin, Takaya, and Nyx. Because they are judgement, they come after death, because they are after death, they have overcome Death, and even that they are beyond Death, and far beyond the Hermit and Fortune. Proving that Takaya andd Jin didn't stand a chance against them, once they found their resolve as a group.
This video was truly made ahead of time with the eventual release of P3 Reload. Definitely something worth a re-watch and to look back on when Reload is released.
Another thing I noticed is that every main character in P3 (minus Fuuka) has dealt with the death of a close person, and this is the proof (also spoilers for P3): 1. MC/Makoto Yuki (and similarly FEMC/Kotone Shiomi) lost their parents 10 years prior to P3, later themselves dying. 2. Yukari Takeba lost her father from the same incident, later MC/Makoto Yuki, in her romance path. 3. Junpei Iori lost Chidori when she revived him (even after coming back to life, she basically doesn't remember him) 4. Mitsuru Kirijo lost her father during the events of P3 when Ikutsuki betrayed everyone. (Also MC) 5. Ken Amada lost his mother 2 years prior to P3 to Shinjiro's persona Castor, and later Shinjiro as well. 6. Akihiko lost his sister Miki when he was little, and later on, Shinjiro. 7. Shinjiro himself dies in the game, and also being directly responsible for Ken's mother's death. Fuuka Yamagishi being the complete oddity, not having anyone close to her dying (that is if you don't include Shinjiro and MC/Makoto Yuki in her romance path)
There's also Koromaru, who lost their first owner prior to the events of the game, and Aigis, who had to deal with MC's death which was further explored in The Answer.
Imma literally write these nuggets of wisdom down in my Tarot Journal, because the story of fighting God in a Japanese port town holds more emotional weight for me than the "think about your hetero marriage and children that you definitely have" suggestions in a lot of the Tarot Book white-books :P
The Tarot card guides always assume to be some kind of adult with a job, which, as a highschooler being the only one in your class with the cards having warranted overnight interest in themselves with these cards, it did hit tought to interpret. I was regularly going off track for them to work, so this also hits home with me.
1:15:50 I always liked that line from Mitsuru too, that no one can just make their own decisions on living and apply them to other people. I just hope she actually still says that in Reload! In P3P, they replaced those lines to instead have her give a somewhat tone-deaf lecture about how Takaya doesn't have friends to give him strength like SEES has, and I've noticed Reload retaining Portable script changes in released footage so far. Be a shame to lose it a second time. Oh well, it is just a few lines regardless.
There's the comparison the the MC and FeMC in that they actually have the same outlook on life despite different behaviors, in fact in the start the most comparable character is Takaya himself. It's an interesting dichotomy both for what is essentially the same person and their mortal enemy. Makoto is the stereotypical emo mostly uninterested, off to the side disconnected to the world. While Kotone (FeMC) is more bubbly at the center of things but doesn't allow meaningful bonds, in the center of the world but unreceptive. It's not until they are basically forced into SEES that they start forming a real connection to the world and it's people. After all even Persona 5 mentioned the Ren had family and sent him away in for his and their mutual benefit, while Persona 3 both are orphans who never had a stable home in 10 years.
Instead of "S" Word we should all start saying "Sent to the Shadow realm" like in yugioh lol. Love the video and the in depth side you take on these subjects and characters can't wait for reloaded
Great job Lady! This video is sooo much more than I was hoping for. It was totally worth the wait! My wife and I have been exploring tarot for about a year now, and I have some familiarity with the major arcana and its meaning. It’s great to see how deeply the devs worked the cards’ themes into the characters lives and journeys. For myself, the arcana that most resonate are the Chariot and Temperance. I believe very strongly in the principle of balance, and those cards help to keep me questioning how well I am keeping to that ideal in my physical and spiritual life.
Excellent compilation/remake right here, gets all the info across perfectly. Hopefully the P3 reload thing is as well considered. Right as I finish this video, the Indian Space Agency is attempting to land their Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the Moon. Let us wish them luck!
This was a great video! I love these analyses. I don't know that I have an affinity with any particular card, but I do know I'm most afraid of the Hanged Man. I think it's because that specific crisis of having to make a difficult choice is so much harder for me to deal with than the Tower's more general, out of control destruction. Whatever choice the Hanged Man makes, they have to take responsibility for.
i fucking love this game so much, it's by far the one they nailed the arcanas the most. "The arcana is the mean by which all is revealed" This game lives and die by this sentence. The more you study about tarot, the more the characters make sense and that's just magical to me. When i was younger and played this for the first time, i'd assume shinji was a hanged man at first just for the outside, but the more you get to know him the more you see how he's probably the best personification of the hierophant, while making itself unique from the fatherly presence that the emperor would provide. It's just beautiful, i'm a psychologist and a major tarot enthusiast, so i usually watch these videos expecting quite a few oopsies, but this one is great, couldn't find anything i disagreed with!
I have to wonder what Koromaru's "initial" Persona would have been, if one were to count Cerberus as his pre-game Ultimate? As for the arcana I relate to the most, that would be Emperor. I do tend to be an elder brother or at times even father figure to my friends. Even though I'm not into the pseudo-science of astrology, I still can never help but find it intriguing how it fits me the most, given that it is one of my Birth Arcana, with the other being Death. In case one doesn't know where that's coming from, I got that from my birthday, December 6, 1993. I break all of those numbers into two-digit numbers and add them all together. 12 + 6 +19 + 93 = 130. We then break that into two two-digit numbers and get 13 + 0, which is 13; the number of the Death Arcana. From there, you split 13 into 1 + 3, which adds to 4, the number of the Emperor Arcana.

I was first thinking about Cwn Annwn; a group of hounds from Irish mythology from the Otherworld and would be sent by the King of Annwn to hunt mundane creatures. Rather than Hell like Christians could think of it as and think of Hades as, Annwn is more like Heaven, however; a "land of plenty" and "eternal youth." I'm not sure exactly how fitting that would be for Koromaru overall, but at least it could appear as three dogs that would then fuse into Cerberus.
Not gonna lie I appoach most hardship like upright Death, except for Death itself Like most this instinctual fear is something I never want to face although inevitable, there's a reason most who greet it are very depressed, in pain, or old. I actually do want to see another Persona user of the Strength Arcana, only this one is human and starts out in the reverse position, with their entire Social Link being about learning some impulse control and how physical strength isn't the only kind of strength that makes a person strong. Restraint takes strength, patience takes strength, and slowly they turn from an emotional glass cannon to someone who is strong in both mind and body. Maybe I'll put that concept into my own Persona OC.
1:12:16 - aaaand it is at this moment, that I realize, that from only seeing the P3 cast in Persona 4 Golden and P4 Arena and Ultimax, that I have made quite a mistake. Chidori is a different charater from Chihiro... ^^;
One day these videos will get Yukari's conflict with her mother and Mitsuru right, but today is not that day. Who would think, as a traumatized child or teen, that their parent cared about or respected their other deceased parents memory if the way they handled their grief was by shacking up with random shady men while also leaving their grieving child to fend for themselves? Why would you trust someone who kept a giant secret that pertained to the truth and origin of your mission not to keep other secrets while you were out risking your life and were close to death's door three times by this point, and yet you still had to force the truth out of them?
I don't see where I said Yukari is an unsympathetic character at all...? Of course she has trauma, and it's understandable. I absolutely will always stand to bat for Yukari and her grief. It's a big reason why I made my video on The Answer specifically. She's a very realistic character. But ultimately trauma doesn't remove a person of all culpability for their actions. And it's not like Mitsuru doesn't have her own trauma either. "It's not Yukari's fault, but it is her responsibility" when it comes to how she treats other people. There are explanations, but it's not an excuse. And vice versa with Mitsuru. Everyone has to take reponsibility for their own actions. Sure, Mitsuru didn't reveal the entire truth, and that's on her, but she's also not forcing Yukari to be a part of SEES. Yukari is the one who wanted to join and get close to the Kirijo group to figure out what was going on. Overall my intention with these arcana and mythology compilation analyses aren't meant to dissect every nuance of each character, otherwise they videos would be 6+ hours each. They're just meant to explain how each character relates to their respective arcana or persona mythology. I usually save deep-dives of any given character for their own dedicated video, which I haven't gotten to for any of P3 yet. I don't even count my brief Junpei one as anything on-par to my P5 and P4 analyses in depth.
@@LadyVirgiliaAnd I'm not saying you did or that Yukari's shielded from her negative actions due to her trauma; that would be such a disrespect to her as a character. I'm just saying her conflict with her mom or Mitsuru in videos like these, when touched upon, is generally incomplete. Regarding Yukari's relationship with her mom: -She says in her SL that she didn't care that her mom wanted to move on, but the way she went about it, jumping from one shady man to the next, was disrespectful to her dad's memory. -Her telling Mitsuru that she would go to that same riverbank in Kyoto every time her mom left her alone to meet with whoever man she was with at the time. -She says that she can't cook at the beginning of the game, but as you progress through her SL, she reveals that she can. The reason for this is revealed in the drama CDs, where she says that she purposely hides the fact that she can cook and can generally fend for herself because she doesn't want to raise suspicions about her home life. -Her surprise in her SL that the man her mom started dating seemed to be a nice and decent guy. And yes, Yukari did join SEES of her own accord, but I don't see how that connects to Mitsuru hiding the origins and information she knew about Tartarus and the Dark Hour. Yukari knew Mitsuru was hiding something, but it seemed like she was waiting for Mitsuru to tell the truth herself. But after three near-death experiences and risking their lives every other night, she got tired of waiting. The fact that Mitsuru and Akihiko were fine with their operations continuing without telling the junior members of SEES everything they knew, yeah, I don't blame Yukari for feeling used or thinking that Mitsuru also knew about and hid that video of her dad. Like this secret keeping also bit her and Akihiko in the butt when it came to Shinji and Ken.
Extremely missed opportunity to mention Junpei's similar glow up with Sokka's. Both lose the only girlfriends they managed to get and both mature in similar ways. Plus I'd argue that Junpei is enacting his Tarot card's upright position as a teacher to Chidori.
As I said in the previous comment I'm really really to the death Arcana because it's about accepting unexpected change and my dad going to jail and unexpected change so I can relate

As much as people praise Persona 3 to be "the best" of the 3 more commonly known games, I honestly cant see it. Yes, it deals with topics that tend to be way less common in videogames and its story has darker and more realistic components (like the existence of the Kirijo group) but at the end it doesnt reach as high of an impact as it would be the importance of seeking the truth or choosing to rebel against a predetermined destiny. I would even go as far as to say that P5 shows the real effect of apathy in society better than 3 does. This is just how i see it, though, not a criticism of the video itself, which I liked a lot.
It could be that these different themes impact people in way different ways. I personally enjoyed P3's ideas about death and change more that P4's "reaching out to the truth." And I think P5 should've done more to truly show what it means to rebel.

I actually do want to see another Persona user of the Strength Arcana, only this one is human and starts out in the reverse position, with their entire Social Link being about learning some impulse control and how physical strength isn't the only kind of strength that makes a person strong. Restraint takes strength, patience takes strength, and slowly they turn from an emotional glass cannon to someone who is strong in both mind and body. Maybe I'll put that concept into my own Persona OC.

One day these videos will get Yukari's conflict with her mother and Mitsuru right, but today is not that day.
Who would think, as a traumatized child or teen, that their parent cared about or respected their other deceased parents memory if the way they handled their grief was by shacking up with random shady men while also leaving their grieving child to fend for themselves?
Why would you trust someone who kept a giant secret that pertained to the truth and origin of your mission not to keep other secrets while you were out risking your life and were close to death's door three times by this point, and yet you still had to force the truth out of them?
I don't see where I said Yukari is an unsympathetic character at all...? Of course she has trauma, and it's understandable.
I absolutely will always stand to bat for Yukari and her grief. It's a big reason why I made my video on The Answer specifically. She's a very realistic character.
But ultimately trauma doesn't remove a person of all culpability for their actions. And it's not like Mitsuru doesn't have her own trauma either. "It's not Yukari's fault, but it is her responsibility" when it comes to how she treats other people. There are explanations, but it's not an excuse. And vice versa with Mitsuru. Everyone has to take reponsibility for their own actions. Sure, Mitsuru didn't reveal the entire truth, and that's on her, but she's also not forcing Yukari to be a part of SEES. Yukari is the one who wanted to join and get close to the Kirijo group to figure out what was going on.
Overall my intention with these arcana and mythology compilation analyses aren't meant to dissect every nuance of each character, otherwise they videos would be 6+ hours each. They're just meant to explain how each character relates to their respective arcana or persona mythology.
I usually save deep-dives of any given character for their own dedicated video, which I haven't gotten to for any of P3 yet. I don't even count my brief Junpei one as anything on-par to my P5 and P4 analyses in depth.
@@LadyVirgiliaAnd I'm not saying you did or that Yukari's shielded from her negative actions due to her trauma; that would be such a disrespect to her as a character. I'm just saying her conflict with her mom or Mitsuru in videos like these, when touched upon, is generally incomplete.
Regarding Yukari's relationship with her mom:
-She says in her SL that she didn't care that her mom wanted to move on, but the way she went about it, jumping from one shady man to the next, was disrespectful to her dad's memory.
-Her telling Mitsuru that she would go to that same riverbank in Kyoto every time her mom left her alone to meet with whoever man she was with at the time.
-She says that she can't cook at the beginning of the game, but as you progress through her SL, she reveals that she can. The reason for this is revealed in the drama CDs, where she says that she purposely hides the fact that she can cook and can generally fend for herself because she doesn't want to raise suspicions about her home life.
-Her surprise in her SL that the man her mom started dating seemed to be a nice and decent guy.
And yes, Yukari did join SEES of her own accord, but I don't see how that connects to Mitsuru hiding the origins and information she knew about Tartarus and the Dark Hour. Yukari knew Mitsuru was hiding something, but it seemed like she was waiting for Mitsuru to tell the truth herself. But after three near-death experiences and risking their lives every other night, she got tired of waiting.
The fact that Mitsuru and Akihiko were fine with their operations continuing without telling the junior members of SEES everything they knew, yeah, I don't blame Yukari for feeling used or thinking that Mitsuru also knew about and hid that video of her dad. Like this secret keeping also bit her and Akihiko in the butt when it came to Shinji and Ken.
Extremely missed opportunity to mention Junpei's similar glow up with Sokka's.
Both lose the only girlfriends they managed to get and both mature in similar ways. Plus I'd argue that Junpei is enacting his Tarot card's upright position as a teacher to Chidori.

As much as people praise Persona 3 to be "the best" of the 3 more commonly known games, I honestly cant see it.
Yes, it deals with topics that tend to be way less common in videogames and its story has darker and more realistic components (like the existence of the Kirijo group) but at the end it doesnt reach as high of an impact as it would be the importance of seeking the truth or choosing to rebel against a predetermined destiny. I would even go as far as to say that P5 shows the real effect of apathy in society better than 3 does.
This is just how i see it, though, not a criticism of the video itself, which I liked a lot.
It could be that these different themes impact people in way different ways. I personally enjoyed P3's ideas about death and change more that P4's "reaching out to the truth." And I think P5 should've done more to truly show what it means to rebel.
