I know I am quite a few years late! I bought eight of these for about £1.50 each from a market stall in the UK many years ago. There was an assortment of colours (green, blue, orange and brown) and the green pens were reasonably transparent. However, after a while the pens in other colours, which felt textured to the touch, just peeled and became just as transparent as the green versions so it must have been a coating post manufacture. Nibs come in fine and medium and they all wrote very well straight out of the packet. All the sections are transparent and the black dome actually enhances the look of the coloured versions. They are good to give to youngsters as a starter pen, especially at £1.50 a pop in my case!
Thanks for reviewing the pen Stephen ! Appreciated !
Thank you for the review, I'm looking forward to have my first fountain pen out of eBay
It's funny that you made this video, because I bought one prior to this. So I hope I enjoy it!
One of the things I enjoy very much, is making a cup of coffee on weekend, and watching one of your great videos. Today it was even better, because it's a demonstrator!
Great review, I didn't know the existence of this Waterman. The thing I would underline, is that you can use is as an eyedropper. There is no such thing as too much ink, especially if you write much as I do.
About the O-rings, it's been a while since I've inked my Preppy eyedropper without an O-ring and it works fine, no leaking.
Gracias a tu video adquirí uno de estos Waterman con M nib. Es muy suave, muchas gracias!!!!!
No problem! Funnily enough, I was just looking at this pen on Amazon a few days ago.
Wow it sounds really scratchy! But it sounds like you find it to be smooth. Interesting.
I just ordered one of these via Goldspot Pens (package deal with green ink), so I'm hoping I like it. Thanks for the great review - as always!
There's nothing like staying in the shade watching some nice pen reviews with this awful weather!:)
How should I know when to use an o-ring when converting a pen to be filled by an eyedropper?
I was listening to your Waterman Kultur review as I wrote for the first time in ten years with my Waterman Phileas with a M nib (the Kultur's "smarter looking" brother) and it had just as much feedback. Though the M is a generous nib that will even please my "broad and stub only" tradition, I really need to work on it to make it a tad smoother!
That's true! I have a Visconti Rembrandt, a OMAS Bologna and a Delta Capri. All of them have the same feed. And all of them are italian pens.
Very good video, very helpful!
Funny thing, I have three Kulturs and all of them required minor nib adjustments. Once it's done, however, they perform very well. They do make nice eyedroppers with no issues whatsoever; for instance, no burping when the ink level is low. I would prefer no obstructions on the grip section but otherwise their design's almost perfect. Very good pens.
It seemed to act as a lubricant but you still need to exert some force when pulling the feed and nib out.
I tried soaking it in warm water, using baby oil but only Zippo fluid manage to work for me. :)
Nice pen! Did some window shopping at Amazon, and I think I like the translucent blue. I think I just might go for it. :)
I have about 15 fountain pens. This is quite simply the best pen (value) for the price, of all my pens. It writes well, it's fun and it's an amazingly consistent, good writer. As of Dec. 2016 you can still get these demonstrators (blue, red and white) fairly easily on Ebay. The current prices range from about $23.00 and then go higher. Not a better deal out there!
My Kultur demonstrator has a clear end cap. Remember the boxed Waterman demonstrator set (FP & BP) I bought at Lichfield pen show last year? Both are 100% clear plastic all the way through. Do you think you might have a 'cut n shut'?
Nice brisk review, thanks.
Can't say that I'm convinced by this pen at all even though it says Waterman on the cap, and it amazes me that it's being offered as a collector's item already. A Preppy with a better clip, more or less. Have I missed something?
How risky is it really to use a pen like that as an eye dropper? It just seems like it could accidentally get slightly unscrewed, and you've got ink (possibly waterproof ink) all over your hands and clothes. Is it really worth the extra bit of ink? Or am I just being silly, and it actually stays screwed down pretty well?
Ah now, there you have me. :-) Must admit both of mine have cracked caps, but the barrel and section seem to be robust. What really impresses me about the Preppy is the superb feed - ideal for an eyedropper and quite a surprise in such an inexpensive pen. I'm sure the Kultur is the better pen really ... tracking one down might be a bit of a problem though!
Im looking for a beginning fountain pen for my 20 something daughter. She likes my cheap Jinhao X450 but she also like my Waterman Phileas. The Phileas isn't in production but the Kultur is the same size. She will use cartridges because she doesn't want to mess with a converter.
I got this one in a silver colour with a black section, and its really weird because i cant find anyone selling it with this colour! :p its a cool everyday pen though, i have it for over 3 years, and its just a little scrached. Although i wouldnt recommend it to be used with an eye dropper, as the low quality plastic may crack easily and cause a problem...
These are fun pens!
Good pen. Have you seen the Philéas? It looks like an expensive version of the Kultur. In fact, I think it is.
Hey there! Is it a better writer than a Kaweco sport classic fine nib or a Metropolitan fine nib?
No, I don't think so.
Very nice review, as always. I would like to say though, buying cheap pens from manufacturers that are too famous for selling expensive pens usually is a bad idea. There are fountain pens less than half this price that write better and even quite nicely with the backside of the nib. Reform 1745 and Diplomat Magnum are good example. Both have some flex in the nib, are pleasant to hold, and not scratchy at all.
Actually I might be talking out of my armpit; it might be my pilot demonstrator that has the clear end cap. I bought them both around the same time and haven't used either for a while so I will have to check - feel free to ignore previous message :o)
I recognize something... the feed of this Waterman seems to be the same of my Parker Premiere! Not too weird, once both companies are actually the same, but I wouldn't expect that.
How is the plastic holding up (scratches, cracking)? How does this "plastic" compare to "acrylic resin" pens like the Pilot Prera or the Custom 74.
Kinda would rather modern pens used lever sacks or aerometrics. You can tell how little ink converters hold.
fill the section with zippo fluid and let it soak for a few minutes.
After that you use nylon head pliers and grab both the nib and feed and pull :)
If you dont have a nylon head pliers, wrapped thick layers of tissue around the nib and feed, then use a normal pilers to pull them out.
awesome pen...
Perhaps you should introduce some sort of durability test in this instance! ;-)
Cool video!
this awesome pen i use parker quink
I got this pen in blue version
Indeed it is a fine pen ever I get used to Japanese pen and a smooth pen
They had the beautiful Phileas pen but stopped making it and instead produced the cheap looking kultur.
Waterman Phileas should be pls reviewed
No Waterman Serenity...
Never had a problem with Preppy nibs, actually. As you say it's very subjective.
I know ;o)
But I do have excuse for stupidness today; up since 5am and strong painkillers
The opera collection is rather decent!
yeah, you are weird as you said. lol
