Hey. How are you loving the gaming performance and how is the build quality ...is it easy to carry ( ik it's a bit heavy), mainly I wanted to ask ...How does it look ..does it feel stealthy , sleek and sexy ?
Thanks for the analysis. Laptop manufacturers have been implementing inbuilt power modes for a while now. Gigabyte give you 5 power modes on the CPU. Eluktronics on the their Mech 15G3/Max 15/Max 17 have a PL1 and PL2 of 120w on the i7 10875h plus undervolting in BIOS - so CB R20 is 4200 points... I have the Legion 7i, and I can get it to run with a PL1 of 105w but unfortunately without an UV (only available in original V2.0 BIOS) it power limit throttles. It would be good to see you cover undervolting, especially now since many OEMs are blocking it, because its the only way to get these 14nm chips perform anywhere near the Ryzen chips. For example, my i9 9880h with an UV scores 3900 points in CB R20 - higher than the i7 10875h at 95w...

Haven't seen the G15 but one of the main reasons why the TUF gets a bit hot is because the Ryzen CPU runs at a higher package power than any other AMD notebook we've seen so far.

Great video. However I wish you would have used a free program to stress the CPU and GPU independently such as Cinebench R20, Prime95. Furmark. CPU load only test and CPU+GPU load test so that viewers could more easily identify if the same model laptop has similar results. I have the legion 7i with the 10750h and cannot maintain 80watts PL1 without heavily thermal throttling at around 94c and wattage dropping into 60-70s. Thinking I may have a mounting pressure issue with heatsink as I have already repasted.
With my XPS 13 9300, there are four modes. I keep it in optimised, but switch to Ultra performance when using CAD and rendering. I also leave it in quiet when in classes, and cool when I am not doing anything intensive
@@HardwareCanucks It's actually quite good, I can see a noticeable difference in the fan noise and temperature. But, I'm not too sure that the performance does much other than let it reach high temperatures!
I think what happened in gaming load when 7i is (under Balanced mode), the CPU drop it's TDP from 45W to 30W while GPU increases TGP from 80W to 95W. This is Nvidia's Dynamic Boost When there is only GPU load, TGP will be 105W for Max-Q equipped 7i (109W for 2060)
I'm using the Legion 5 15 with Ryzen 4800H. I don't even need to use turbo mode for games because the highest gpu offered is the gtx1650ti. Balanced mode max out the gpu at 99% with 20-30% CPU only. I use turbo mode for editing and rendering videos.
Legion 5 (AMD) is definitely my favourite gaming laptop, the only drawbacks are the numpad on the keyboard and no dedicated buttons for the trackpad, probably gonna get it when 1660Ti and 80Wh battery configs are available in my country
Curious to see what the setting difference was because I've seen some people able to get 6-7 hours of battery life from the same specs. What do you think they did differently? Also does the lowest power mode change the hz to 60 on the display?
My laptop is set to balanced almost all the time. If I do plan on gaming for a while I'll turn on performance mode if I remember to, and battery mode if I know I'll be away from the wall for a while.
I simply don’t understand how you managed to have almost 6 hours of web browsing. I’ve tried almost anything already (using quite mode, disabling the dGPU, power saver in windows, reducing the luminosity to 30%, using throttlestop to disable turbo boost, installed Intel XTU and undervolt it) and in this condition on my L 7i 10875H Nvidia 2060 i can get maximum of 3 hours(180 min) of really light web browsing. What is the catch ?
Thank you, man! I have come across most of your reviews. Your review is thrilling combining your voice, analyses, presentation, and video angle. However, suggest me a laptop with maximum priority on CPU GPU combination (intel 7 11th gen or ryzen 7 5000 series, graphics as you prefer). I am a heavy user of regular tasks (productivity, programming, and a bit of gaming)
Good question. It REALLY depends on what you need. The G14 is more of an all-round notebook that's also good at gaming. The screen size isn't great for gaming though. We prefer 15" and above for a gaming notebook.
Anyone who's gaming, it's already a compromise not having a PC and using a laptop instead either for budget or mobility reasons as an adult and in such cases mostly, the laptop is plugged in all the time anyway either in office or home etc. So, the first settings change it receives as XMP profile in PCs is Performance mode in Laptops to compensate not having a PC instead. If it's something like Canteen or College, that means, even if I have money this would be my one computer anyway as to living in hostels or boys PG rooms.
Function + Q cycles through the Power modes The power button is BLUE = SILENT Light TEAL = AUTO RED = PERFORMANCE So why in your charts do you use RED = AUTO Light TEAL = PERFORMANCE PINK(?) = SILENT It would have been so easy to make your chart colours the same as the power button :(
On y540 how can I know which performance mode currently I'm running? I switch it with Fn + Q but the only way to know which I'm using is to enter the lenovo vantage app. Outside the app there's absolutely no visual info which mode is currently running. Any ideas?
auto and balance are two different words and were used in this pc as the same, it felt so odd to hear it multiple times being called one or another as the "same" mode xd
Hello, I accidentally removed one of the power plans and after redownloading and reinstalling them there is a difference between quiet and balance mode, but there are no differences between balance and performance mode. What can I do?
I'm using a ROG G531GT(intel i7 9750h; gtx 1650) and I usually keep it on silent both plugged and on battery and only switch to high performance when gaming or when I need higher cpu performance for tasks like compiling. It does nice job of keeping everything snappy enough on silent mode for me not to notice while working on it and It also has the added bonus of keeping the idle temperature lower (because of the lower power usage in that mode)
I have the Legion 7i with i7-11800H and GeForce RTX 3070. Purchased for machine learning applications rather than gaming. It came with Lenovo's beefy (and heavy) 300W power adapter. I use the quiet mode most of the time. I am disappointed that the machine usually consumes 35-50W during my normal use, but when I use a 100W USB PD power brick, or even a 135W Lenovo brick, it won't keep the battery charged. I turn on the notebook with a fully charged battery and plug in one of the the lower power output bricks, but it still lets the battery level drop. So traveling w/o that heavy 300W brick isn't an option. Surely this is a firmware or BIOS issue that could be fixed! Otherwise, it's BY FAR the fastest, most powerful laptop I've ever encountered.
While playing eSports game I switch to balanced mode but while playing high demanding AAA titles like RDR 2, I switch to performance mode and I can't compromise on that
About gpu speeds being lower on high performance, it's probably because heatpipes are shared, so the higher temps in the cpu at high performance raise the temps of the gpu by a few degrees too, hence lowering it's core clock due to nvidia's gpu boost technologie, wich is highly dependant on temps.
That's certainly possible but the CPU temps were really good. This could just be a matter of Legion prioritizing certain components in different power plans as well.
Please compare the liquid metal cooling impact in gaming laptops, you might say that one would void the warranty but I am saying about the newly launched Asus rog strix g and scar series laptop those incorporate liquid metal cooling, does this effect the temperature?, it would be nice to see, which is more efficient in cooling:- liquid metal cooling (ROG) or vapour chamber cooling (used in the lenevo 7i)
Great video .I Just gut mine with 2070 max q and it’s an outstanding laptop coming from my Alienware high end laptop , I installed intel xtu and noticed power limit throttling even with temperatures at only 65-70 degrees .. I’m puzzled
Hi ! i am only getting 2 hours of battery use , very light use of only web browsing and youtube .! i even uninstalled Icue and when on battery i turn all lights off and use quite mode , did i get a faulty unit ? should I return it ?
So from all videos on UA-cam what I learned is ? 1. Increase in temperature always shorten life span 2. Pushing above tdp increase the chance of device failure 3. When buying laptops especially to play AAA games in ultra settings and getting FPS above 70 is really difficult with current 2000 series GPU of Nvidia . 4. Laptops need to come with a evolutionary cooling . 5. Legion 7 vapour chamber is a marketing gimmick this video proves .

I have the legion 7i with the 10750h and cannot maintain 80watts PL1 without heavily thermal throttling at around 94c and wattage dropping into 60-70s. Thinking I may have a mounting pressure issue with heatsink as I have already repasted.
Hey great video! Did you have windows in balanced or performance power mode? Edit: Saw where you said legion software overrides it?
4800H
If this laptop has 4800H, it will literally be perfect, all those watt wasted by Intel, they could have been fed to Starving GPU in Africa.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🏆
ryzen is shitty and laggy and shite software
and why the racism africa is not starvation contient it is cannibal country
Please make a video on best budget 2020 computer peripheral
We're on it!
@@HardwareCanucks thanks man.
How do you rate these thermals compared to similar gaming laptops? I'm curious coz a lot of reviewers are saying 7i is having bad thermals.
With my XPS 13 9300, there are four modes. I keep it in optimised, but switch to Ultra performance when using CAD and rendering. I also leave it in quiet when in classes, and cool when I am not doing anything intensive
What do you think about the Dell Power Plan? So far we've seen good results with it.
This is Nvidia's Dynamic Boost
When there is only GPU load, TGP will be 105W for Max-Q equipped 7i (109W for 2060)
Plz review the asus zephyrus S15 and M15
Hope i can see soon enough the review of the legion 5 with the 120hz panel so i know what to expect with that screen!
@7:23 so can you hear any noise on silent mode? i remember the y740 was very quiet.
I am a heavy user of regular tasks (productivity, programming, and a bit of gaming)
im torn between the msi GS66, Asus G14 or this :( sad times. This offers more for very similar price as the G14
AwkwardYet who wouldn’t!
This. Definitely.
MSI Stealth GS75 here. i7 8th gen - RTX 2070 - Samsung NMVe. SHIFT: Comfort FAN SPEED: Auto. V-sync ON Smooth gameplay and silent machine.
Hello, what do you think about Dell precision 5550?
How does it stands with Dell XPS and MacBook in overall performance specially video editing?
would you recommend the ROG g14 as the best for the price range?
Good question. It REALLY depends on what you need. The G14 is more of an all-round notebook that's also good at gaming. The screen size isn't great for gaming though. We prefer 15" and above for a gaming notebook.
Its probably the best laptop right now, it is a phenomenal price
@@mproa5854 IF you can find it from a first part seller. Third parties are busy jacking up its price like nuts.
Hardware Canucks whats a good laptop for video editing and gaming that's 15"?
Hardware Canucks best buy sells it for $1,450
What do you think the battery life is on the 5i with the 80w battery? Nice video!
We don't have the 5i yet. But 80Whr is less than other comparable notebooks.
@@HardwareCanucks cool. Thank you. I checked it out at best buy but a lower tier. It's very sleek and comfortable to type on, even with the numb pad.
Blade Stealth 2020, balanced when plugged in and power-saver on battery. As you concluded performance just gives 5-10% percent extra fps.
Thank you for going over this.
I need to ask, where is the wallpaper from? That face is weirdly adorable.
Wallhaven. ;)
Function + Q cycles through the Power modes
The power button is
BLUE = SILENT
Light TEAL = AUTO
RED = PERFORMANCE
So why in your charts do you use
RED = AUTO
Light TEAL = PERFORMANCE
PINK(?) = SILENT
It would have been so easy to make your chart colours the same as the power button
:(
On y540 how can I know which performance mode currently I'm running? I switch it with Fn + Q but the only way to know which I'm using is to enter the lenovo vantage app. Outside the app there's absolutely no visual info which mode is currently running. Any ideas?
Same on my Legion 7i. I believe it's a driver issue since my laptop came without Windows preinstalled
@@siulian I installed lenovo utility from Microsoft Store and now it shows the power mode when I switch ;)
auto and balance are two different words and were used in this pc as the same, it felt so odd to hear it multiple times being called one or another as the "same" mode xd
Would be interesting to see the same test based on the standard Windows power settings.
Believe it or not, a lot of manufacturers DISABLE most of those.
Best Laptop for 4k video editing ? Under 1000 dollars,
- Came to know battery life in gaming laptops isn't great
Which program are you running? Resolve? Premiere? Vegas?
@@HardwareCanucks premier
for me, Vegas. I can go to $2200
I have the Legion 7i with i7-11800H and GeForce RTX 3070.
8:42 Didn’t show battery life stats for heavy workloads :(
Its there in BLUE.
@@HardwareCanucks Whoops, sorry I'm blind :(
While playing eSports game I switch to balanced mode but while playing high demanding AAA titles like RDR 2, I switch to performance mode and I can't compromise on that
About gpu speeds being lower on high performance, it's probably because heatpipes are shared, so the higher temps in the cpu at high performance raise the temps of the gpu by a few degrees too, hence lowering it's core clock due to nvidia's gpu boost technologie, wich is highly dependant on temps.
That's certainly possible but the CPU temps were really good. This could just be a matter of Legion prioritizing certain components in different power plans as well.
what about a undervolting test? battery life, performance and temperatures differences
If we get enough requests that'll be in an upcoming video.
Is it a whining sound or just sound of 'moving air'?
Please compare the liquid metal cooling impact in gaming laptops, you might say that one would void the warranty but I am saying about the newly launched Asus rog strix g and scar series laptop those incorporate liquid metal cooling, does this effect the temperature?, it would be nice to see, which is more efficient in cooling:- liquid metal cooling (ROG) or vapour chamber cooling (used in the lenevo 7i)
How can I unlock advanced settings on BIOS.(legion 5i) please help me
hi l, liked your video can you do the same for the razer blades and alienware laptops thanks
Absolutely. But right now we are a bit backlogged with notebooks LOL.
Really good one. Nice
Did not explain about the Power Plan and their settings. Pretty misleading title.
can you tell us what is the weight of your exact unit and what is the weight of the power brick and also how big is the power brick
Sure. Just weighed it. Looking at 2.254 KG. Do you want the weight of the power bring AND cords or just the brick?
Finally, thank you for this.
Hello. Is it normal that in Vantage in Edge section I only have three options? I'm on Legion Y530 with 2004 Win 10
I hope you do a comparison beetween MSI GE66 raider and LEGION 7i
Great video .I Just gut mine with 2070 max q and it’s an outstanding laptop coming from my Alienware high end laptop , I installed intel xtu and noticed power limit throttling even with temperatures at only 65-70 degrees .. I’m puzzled
Me too man. I have the 2070 Super Max and seen the same issue when running Xtu program. Did you manage to solve it?
Hi ! i am only getting 2 hours of battery use , very light use of only web browsing and youtube .! i even uninstalled Icue and when on battery i turn all lights off and use quite mode , did i get a faulty unit ? should I return it ?
I can't find the i9 option on Lenovo's website. Is this laptop not out yet?
It keeps selling out so it gets unlisted. We're guessing stock of the 10980HK is VERY limited.
So from all videos on UA-cam what I learned is ?
1. Increase in temperature always shorten life span
2. Pushing above tdp increase the chance of device failure
Did you try the System76 Oryx Pro?
