    I have a 1997 BMW r850r and my final drive bearings blew out at 100k miles. I bought a used eBay final drive with 35k miles for $200. It took a couple hours to replace instead of rebuilding. My mechanical skills are limited. Good luck. 👍👍👍 Look at the bright side, she took you a long way from home and after it’s fixed, you’ll have another 100k of riding ahead. Beautiful bike!

    Great film really enjoyed it well done fantastic effort you can’t help a mechanical failure you don’t edit out dropping the bike in the sand which is unavoidable an oil leak and a worn bearing are just wear and when dealt with you will have a great bike for many more miles I love the down to earth attitude fabulous trip great memories you will have

    So unlucky. The GS Final drive is usually one of the most reliable components on the 1150. But what a trip and adventure!, The 1150 just eats up the miles and is so comfortable to ride once the weight is moving forward…Just coming up on 5 years of owning an 1150 GSA and since owning her I have never got my list of jobs to do on the bike below 10 fixes, still, I love her❤…great video and series and good luck.

    • @dutchsailor6620
      @dutchsailor6620 8 місяців тому +2

      Sorry to disturb the dream, but final drive, driveshaft and gearbox/clutch are rather unreliable parts of the 1100/1150. Just compare the number of good engines vs gearboxes available on the market, it should be approx 1 to 1 but it's more likely something like 2.5 to 1. Final drives break down a lot to, but it's an easy fix, normally they can be repaired without even taking the final drive of the bike.

    • @m.f.m.67
      @m.f.m.67 8 місяців тому

      Indeed, the final drive on the 1150 series is known to be a constant source of problems and breakdowns. Ever since BMW adopted the single-sided swingarms, their shaft drive has been worthless. Stick with easy to repair chains or a double-arm shaft drive like the Yamaha Super Tenere. @@dutchsailor6620

    I know the feeling...I got stuck for 4 days near Calais with the same problem: On my way home from the UK to Germany on a tight schedule, Noticed oil on the wheel on the ferry but thought I'd see how far I could get: 14km was the answer!! Called the ADAC breakdown people who were very good but the problem in France is that all bike shops shut on Mondays! Anyway, long story short I got home on Friday. This was an 1100RT but the same problem. When I bought my 1150GS, the first job was to change the bearing...

    • @SidekickSolo
      @SidekickSolo  8 місяців тому +1

      Before my trip a few people advised me to change the bearing but I was running out of time and money so I decided to take my chances and not change it. Obviously I wish I did but those are the chances you take sometimes.

    Well done, a great video despite the ending. You seemed to have had a bit of good luck and a bit of bad. I’m sure that it’s better that the bike is in Northern Spain rather than Northern Africa but it’s such a shame that it didn’t hold out for the final leg home. I’m now looking forward to the sequel. Thanks again.

    Ah such a shame! Perhaps I'm projecting, but I think a breakdown is probably one of the biggest things that puts many off doing such trips.
    So it is good to see how you've handled it, and managed to remain calm and bring us footage throughout.
    Looking forward to seeing how it pans out, and even more so hope you aren't too much out of pocket at the end!

    • @SidekickSolo
      @SidekickSolo  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes I agree their. To many people are put off by what could happen if things go wrong but they shouldn’t be. It’s always an inconvenience to break down but there is always a way of getting things sorted. Even if that means you have to walk away for a while. Most things turn out ok in the end if you remain patient.

    • @davidmatthews3093
      @davidmatthews3093 8 місяців тому +1

      Just make sure that you do what SKS did and have a decent breakdown insurance. Top marks for him not panicking and being very laid back about the situation but that’s the confidence that good cover gives. It’s very unusual for any bike not to make it home but incidents and accidents do happen, they’re all part of the adventure.

    My comment has been deleted, but in short: quick fix disks, replace spring washers with M14 washers. Differential: roadside repair but will need new bearing, oil seal and o-ring, will cost about 200 euro's and one hour of work. I don't want to be the guy that says I told you so, but I did advise you to take those parts as spares.

    • @SidekickSolo
      @SidekickSolo  8 місяців тому

      Yes you did tell me to do the final drive bearings and obviously in hindsight I would have. I am just glad that it lasted until the way home before it failed.
