I am glad somebody is teaching middle aged and elderly folks on what to do and what not to do. There are a ton of 20/30 year old, half dressed youngsters on UA-cam teaching all sorts of complicated exercises that could very well send me to a rehab center! :-)
Just because these guys are not young doesn't mean they won't send you to the Emergency room. I hear you. I am 68 and thought often about starting an exercise channel. Stretching is a very bad thing to do to your body.
Thank you Bob Brad & Mike for these exercises & tips... they're simple, comfy & easy to do at home at our convenience. As we get older, it's great that we share ways to keep the body comfy & lessen the pain for a better quality of life
Having Osteoporosis and fractured 2 vertebrae earlier this year, i did 4-1/2 months of PT. Excellent therapists and I am doing great. At home between sessions, I did their exercises and added things I’ve learned from you. Reviewed the exercises with my PT’s and they approved all you do. Thank you for your excellent videos. Your recommendations are spot on and it’s like getting great PT for free!! Keep up the good work, guys!
I am 68 and I would never stretch, not since I hurt myself stretching. I have been injury free since I stopped stretching. I had a REAL doctor tell me once to NOT stretch. HE said regular exercise is all you need to maintain full range of motion.
Maintain what you have or improve to what you could have? Two different things. At a young 59, and very active, I can say that there is also a need for over 50 advice tailored to the younger seniors. A lot of us want to get in shape before our later years to improve those years because then it will be much harder to do.
Amazing, as always. Got myself some minor injuries and niggles through my yoga practice. Bye-bye lotus pose! Modifying a lot of other asanas based on your sage advice. I tell people about your content in real life all the time. It's honestly life-changing if followed. I'm in the UK, with a crumbling NHS and insane referral times. It's invaluable what you do. I'll shut-up now!
We have insane referral times without national Healthcare. For many wait is endless as people can never get care because they lack access to healthcare at all. With medical insurance through my job and I paid extra it was going to cost me 3000 for whats considered a routine possibly lifesaving test. Haven't been able to schedule it yet.
Loved to hear the reference to Stu McGill! I had sciatic issues to the point of being crippled and on a list for surgery after various shots and physio didn't help. I got Stu McGill's book "Back Mechanic", watched every video I could find of his and worked on trying to follow his routine. It took a a year, but no more pain, getting my agility back, lost some weight, feeling so much better! Hid "big three" really help. For us over 60 folks some physiotherapists have a brief routine, if it doesn't work they just shrug. Appreciate this channel as well!
Chi gung is the best exercises for every age but particularly from 50 onwards. It builds strength, encourages suppleness and gives you energy. It does not require special clothing, equipment just comfortable clothes and some space in a room or outdoors.
Thanks, guys. My PE teachers, my military dad, and various TV exercise people all taught me exercises that I could not do consistently. I would always have to take a break every few days, due to pain. But you guys have never steered me wrong.
Most of the exercises taught years ago were from people who had a poor understanding of physiology which is why they did more damagethan benefits. People are more aware now.
We live and learn! The military exercises are aimed at very young people who can probably get away with the damage caused by incorrect exercises at least for the duration of their service. Its only when they get older that the damage becomes obvious. Thats why I follow this and one other channel dedicated to us senior people. I trust Bob and Brad (and now Mike) not to steer me wrong 😀
During Covid lockdown I dug up an old Jane Fonda video. It had all these “don’t” moves. I threw out my SI joint! I guess this was why I had so many back problems back when I first got that video!
As an Aqua Fitness instructor, I appreciate what you folks are doing here on this channel. It gives me more information about what exercises do for the body and what I can safely try/adapt in a water setting.
I tried planks recently - 6 months after laminectomy spinal surgery...and the result was disastrous. Many years ago I did planks for my transverse abdominus and they worked great for removing back pain. Just shows that what works at one stage of your life can be harmful at a later stage.
Greetings from Italy, I also had the same operation, due to cancer, in 2017 (I was 50 at that time): let me reassure with time and patience You will 100% recovery. But at least for 2-3 Years I had pain in the back. 6 months is maybe too early. Try to plank with Your knees on the mat as a starter. Love from Italy
I'm so sorry that happened to you. It's great you're watching these now while so young though. Spread the Bob & Brad word among your fellow young folks!
This is why I’m always glad I had an amazing very well educated yoga instructor in my east 20s. We never over do it. FLAT back to go forward. Even if you don’t go far. And I have amazing flexibility now into my late 59s thanks to her. And strength 😊
1:12 - The mistake you were making in the “bad” exercise WAS rounding the spine! If you bend from the waist with the back as straight as you can the exercise won’t be damaging.
One thing I have noticed, the people I know that have had back surgery, went to an orthopedic surgeon. Non of these people can walk straight or have more problems than they had to before their surgery. Orthopedic surgeons should never do back surgery. I went to a neurologist. I do everything still to this day. Had my surgery in 1996.
Surgeons like to cut. I knew a lady in school who had had 24 back surgeries, all done by the same doctor. Most of them were to fix whatever happened in the previous surgery. At one point, she has also gotten a terrible infection during the surgery and hospital stay. When I knew her, she had to wear a thing that looked like a small refrigerator, to keep her body straight, and was not allowed to turn her head to either side. She was only about 40.
I'm not supposed to walk due to a broken back ( three places). If I would've listened to tunnelvision medical morons I'd be wheelchair bound for life. Luckily, over thirty years ago I met this chinese doctor who taught me about zhan zhuang. Amongst other things, it's known to heal bones and increase bone density. I could sit and that was plenty enough to start. Took me a year but....I can practice vinyasa yoga if I want and walk 7 miles easily. They call me a medical wonder. I call them idiots. Took them 5 all messed up surgeries to realize and admit there's better stuff than their Vesalius based crap and fat wallets.
I'm 65 and I do all the exercises you warned about in my 1 hour plus of yoga per day. I never go beyond pain or discomfort. I have CMT and I have stayed away from doctors and physical therapists and that is why I am still able to do what I do. I have seen so many others with CMT destroy there bodies with the recommendations of their doctors and now they are unable to walk.
This is a great video! I'm 50 and love to workout but I don't want to do anything that will cause problems as I grow older. I almost didn't watch this because there are so many exercise videos on YT and some of them are crap and would cause injury. This is very informative and helpful! Keep more of these coming for people in 50+ category. Subscribing.
Love your advice. Been recommending these as a chiropractor for years. But Mike be careful with your neck during the bird dog. It was somewhat hyperextended. But I guess you were just trying to explain things to the camera. Thank you for all your amazing work!
Pilates does all these exercises. You work up to it but great for helping me grow old gracefully with a healthy core and spine. I love how it makes me feel.
Standing twist is totally ineffective if the hips are moving. Keep your hips steady and rotate from above the pelvis. If you can’t do that, opt for supine twists so the hips and pelvis are stabilized.
Thanks. Very clear and to the point. I have always found the superman exercise very difficult and often skip it when I go to my fitness class. I feel reassured that I can use the alternative.
I ‘ve done most of these stretches. Both the bad and the correct way. The bad way was really hurting me. I didn’t know at the time I was forming(?) bulging discs in my lumbar region. I have 4 bulging discs. I didn’t know what to do about stretching before my long walk with my dog. I would stretch…then it felt like was was doing more harm than good. Thanks for the stretch routine
Thanks for the great information. I also attended gym class. I find my stretch out strap helpful in many ways, maybe you could do a video showing it's benefits.
Please don’t use AI for your thumbnails. It makes you look like one of those low-quality videos where an AI voice reads AI-generated wrong text over AI pictures, not to mention that as physical therapy professionals, there’s A LOT wrong with that poor pretend woman in the pic.
Мy mom has been doing your exercises since 2013! She died yesterday at the age of 82. I don’t know if your recommendations affected her life expectancy.. But your exercises allowed her to be active, live with pleasure and visit the doctor infrequently. and, of course, she was not lying down, there was no nurse caring for her! thank you for this, for your work) KYIEV, UKRAINE.
That was so sweet of you to let us know. We are very sorry for your loss. She sounds like a great woman who really lived all the way to the end :) We are so happy we could help keep her active. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for this reminder how vital it is to spare the lumbar spine. My herniations don’t need to be further taxed! I am having marked success with mat Pilates. Must do a few modifications with bent knees instead of 45 degree angle. As I strengthen my core, I am finding success in ability to do these with straight legs. If the pain is not present with the 45 degree any longer, do I do the more difficult maneuver to be truer to the Pilates method, or do the less challenging to spare the potential for lower back irritation? This channel is so helpful, thank you very much for your positively golden content.
Last year a very simple exercise raptured my upper arm muscle to more than 50 % . The pain came the next day not the day I did that exercise. It was putting the fingertips on each side on each shoulder and rotating the then folded arms forward and backward . That was enough to get hurt. After eight months it is still not completely healed without surgery.
How do you do these exercises after having knee and hip replacement and have been told not to be on yiur hands and knees on the floor/ground due to the slide that is glued onto the back of the patella?
The ability to touch your toes and sit sorted and touch your toes is something you do in yoga. This is a great exercise and should do it daily! Don’t round. This is crazy😮 yoga. Walking. Light weights. These are perfect as you are!
First thing is get a back stretcher preferably a three way adjustable. The most important thing is reestablishing the "arch" in your lower spine. Arch is inward not outward. Do this for at least 20 minutes every day. Take copper supplements and get a copper infused support belt and put it on for several minutes a day. Wear it around the house. Follow these guys gentle exercises without pissing off that nerve in your hip. A must is using Tumeric for anti-inflammation. Inflammation equals severe pain. So take Advil. I promise it will subside.
I ca n t because of my knee. It's injures and very painful. It's killing me. The bird dog. I Really want to do it but I can't move my knee it's too painful. I also don't have floor space . And they took my exercise mat. A really good one.
in a an over 55 building, a place for a smokers, a place to watch dogs dump by people with walkers, an empty gym...no where for my bike storage, these places are storage for bad habits that have broken people.
Is there a table like you all use in the videos that you would recommend? It looks like a standard massage table. I am not able to get down on the floor any longer until I get back in better shape so a table like that would be great to have

Thanks for the tips! 💚🙏🇦🇺

How do you do these exercises after having knee and hip replacement and have been told not to be on yiur hands and knees on the floor/ground due to the slide that is glued onto the back of the patella?
Good idea! Wish they would do a video(s) on what we can do after 2 knee replacements. Also exercises for people with ascending aortic aneurysm.

This is all great info, but I found the lateral shoulder raises (with or without weights) still caused problems.
If you can, get it diagnosed by a qualified physiotherapist, etc. Not a medical doctor, pill pushers.
Thanh you very much
You are welcome.
Thank you Brad and Mike. Are front raises ok to do, or will they injure the shoulder over time?
in a an over 55 building, a place for a smokers, a place to watch dogs dump by people with walkers, an empty gym...no where for my bike storage, these places are storage for bad habits that have broken people.
When you do the alternate arms out to side inside of upright rows, is it just as effective using one arm at a time?
Great video what are the five best exercises for seniors
Good video
Glad you enjoyed
Gracias
Thank you for posting.

Brad, you need a cape to go with that superhero outfit. And maybe a cowl. : )
Is there a table like you all use in the videos that you would recommend? It looks like a standard massage table. I am not able to get down on the floor any longer until I get back in better shape so a table like that would be great to have
Brad showed doing the pointer dog leaning against a wall.
Stay active people. 50s are not old at all. Just keep moving.
Good advice.
Thanks so much. For decades I was always very aggressive with stretches, and one day BOOM .
Thanks to both of you.
You're welcome!
Oh yes touch the toes lol what about the sit ups with head curled to touch knees! The sit ups we can blame the ARMY or Marines for, Superman one was really bad.
What's the info on static stretching these days? Thanks guys!
Yoga. All about this ancient wisdom!
What belts are you wearing ?
What is the weight of these dumbbells for 68 years old lady
Anyone knows where is Bob now ? Thank you for your info.
Bob (the tall one) has been diagnosed with Ataxia. It affects his balance and his speech, but does not affect his thinking. He is still working behind the scenes directing and sharing his knowledge. He has also come out with a book!
Hi. Help me out, I'm confused. Your previous video on the 3 stretches shows a bending to touch the floor but today you say that could lead to injuries in the lower back. What is it im not getting? Thank you
That windshield wiper thing would be a no for me. Maybe with the ball. Any alternatives to Figure 4? I've heard it's bad for hips.
I’m telling this to everybody. And I can’t believe that when I had a bulging disk, the first thing the PT did was for me to touch my toes! By the time I got home, I was in the worst pain.
This just happened to one of my friends!
They don't all have the same qualifications, experience or belief system in therapeutic modalities. It's a crap shoot
I'm 60 and can easily put my head to my knees standing or sitting.
Im confused....i keep seeing things that say you are supposed to develop strength through the full range of motion (including a rounded spine). Are you saying that people over 50 shouldnt do things like jefferson curls for full body mobility?
does Power Tower Abs Workout bad for lower back pain ?
