I have always really loved this song. In his solo career Sting explored many styles of music from the gentleness of fragile to the more club beat of Desert Rose and so much more. The singer is Algerian and his name is Cheb Mami. He incorporates the Algerian folk style of Rai music with other styles and sings in Algerian Arabic. In interviews he said that Sting allowed him to write his own lyrics as long as they were in the theme of lost love and longing.
Sting saw in Paris Chab Mami to performed and he was mesmerized by his voice and ask Mami if he could improvised. Mami didn't understand a word of English, Sting revealed." But the lyric he improvised was almost the same as mine Somehow they were connected with the same feelings and emotions!! "! That's the language of music!! Awesome song and reaction!!!
The singer singing with Sting is Algerian musician Cheb Mami. He fit in perfectly with the desert-themed song. This song and parts of this footage were used for a Jaguar commercial a while back when this song first came out.
@Tara king Cheb Mami was sentenced to five years in prison. The musician has abducted his former wife with the help of three accomplices and brutally tried to interrupt her pregnancy. But violent abortion has failed.
Definitely give Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set them Free." It was his first solo hit after the Police and was the "antidote" to "Every Breath You Take."
Dream of the Blue Turtles is still my favourite Sting (and for that matter, Police) Album. In fact, it was the first album I ever bought. I was also fortunate enough to see him live during his Dream of the Blue Turtles tour. He had the most powerful voice I've ever heard. You could hear the sheer power coming out of his voice rather than the loud microphone. His solo rendition of Moon Over Bourbon Street (just his all-encompassing voice and a steel string, I think) was the best song - it sent chills up my spine.
Sting's ability with songcrafting, and the sheer literacy involved with his lyrics, has few parallels. Just an amazing artist all around, so versatile. Everything he does benefits not just from repeated listening, but sincere reflection. "Russians", "It Had To Be Me", "All This Time", "Mad About You", "They Dance Alone", "Fields of Gold", "Fortress Around Your Heart".... and that's not even scratching the surface. He should have won an Oscar for "Until", used with the film "Kate & Leopold". You need to experience at least a couple of dozen Sting songs before you'll get a sense of his breadth and scope.
Great suggestion! It's not about his wife though. It's a fictional tale he thought of when looking over the fields of his farm in the hills and imagined the lives of the previous owners. Also, the video he made gives away that the narrator is a ghost/spirit wandering around, remembering his time on earth ( "you'll remember me when the west wind moves..." ). Such an evocative masterpiece !
Nice pick :) thank you for the reaction, such a beautiful song and collaboration ft. Cheb Mami an Algerian musician and singer-songwriter who speaks Algerian Arabic. Sting was mesmerized by his voice and even though Cheb didn't understand english he add his part and look how perfect it turned out. This shows how beautiful and powerful music is, even if you don't speak the language or understand it, by combing beautiful cultures together, you get a beautiful song.
The featured singer is Cheb Mami he is a huge Algerian Rai singer, Rai is very popular music genre in Algeria it is like a mixture of jazz, blues, reggae, Arabic drums and what he is singing could be classified as "mawal" in Arabic is a musical style where you showcase your vocal abilities and hit complex notes without even needing a beat to sing on.. But then again that's the sound that Cheb Mami is known for he does it a lot in his songs too like "let me cry", "azwaw /pays de merveilles", "mali mali", "comme ça".. Yes there's some french mixed with Algerian in his music..
YESSSS STING You should definitely check out his other songs "Fields of gold", "Shape of my heart", Englishman in New York", If I ever lose my faith in you"
Sting is AWESOME! So many hits, so talented. Check out: • Be Still My Beating Heart • Fortress Around Your Heart • Children's Crusade (with EPIC sax solo!) • Moon Over Bourbon Street • Russians • If I Ever Lose My Faith in You • Fragile • They Dance Alone (it's about those murdered and "disappeared" under the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile in the 1970s; look for Sting's live performance in Chile with surviving mothers of the victims - SO moving)
Sting was a school teacher in the 70’. In 1977 the Police exploded onto the scene. He’s a very intelligent and eclectic person. I saw Sting in 1985 for his first solo tour, the police Ghost in the machine tour in 1982 , and Synchronicity tour 1983 in Montreal when I was 11 years old. Thanks to my older brother 🤟❤️🇨🇦
Sting is such an amazing artist and I loved that he was able to showcase the talents of Cheb Mami who is also a great singer (regardless of Mami's personal life). Love this song. ❤️
For Sting: I think you would like his song Send Your Love (great beat and message). He has some others that have a lot of meaning such as Fields of Gold, Fragile, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, and Fortress Around Your Heart. He wrote a protest song against Pinochet and his government in support of the Chilean Women who danced the Cueca (National) dance with pictures of their loved ones (husbands or sons) that have disappeared. The song is called They Dance Alone. Sting noted that it was a symbolic protest, but he did bring awareness to the issue and over the years has brought many of these women up on stage while this song was performed.
Hey Jovaughn listen to "Englishman in New York" he wrote it about his friend. Just something about it, crisp, snappy tune. Gets caught in that brain loop, "im an alien, imma legal alien...🎶"🗣👂🧠 This one Desert Rose was an excellent choice!👌
Love Sting. So many great songs: Fragile, Fields of Gold, Fortress Around My Heart, Shape of My Heart, Englishman in New York, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, If You Love Somebody, All This Time, Brand New Day, Moon Over Bourbon Street. I could go on forever.
I've worked in restaurants my whole life. I once worked with a young lady from Bosnia, and she would really get into this whenever I would sing this for her. Great song.
Sting is from my native north-east of england, along with Mark knopfler, bryan ferry and a lot more to numerous to mention, so proud of these talented geordies! 😁😎
This is so different, it’s my favourite song tonight by quite a clear margin. This is how you do it, this one mixed it up a bit. I listen to Turkish and Greek and Middle Eastern sometimes.
Sting is awesome....many different styles in his bag of tricks...this is why he split with the Police...he wanted to do different things....love his voice
Fields Of Gold. It reminds me of walking in wheat fields w my grandfather, which we used to do all the time until he died. I can't hear that song w/o bursting into tears, even if i;m out grocery shopping. I just have to leave the store if it comes on.
Awwww I’m so glad you have listened to this, I wrote for you to try this a couple of nights ago, sooooo happy, us subscribers do have very good taste 👌🏻🙏🏻🥰😁
I dream of rain I dream of gardens in the desert sand I wake in vain I dream of love as time runs through my hand I dream of fire Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire And in the flames Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire This desert rose Each of her veils, a secret promise This desert flower No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this And as she turns This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams This fire burns I realize that nothing's as it seems I dream of rain I dream of gardens in the desert sand I wake in vain I dream of love as time runs through my hand I dream of rain I lift my gaze to empty skies above I close my eyes The rare perfume is the sweet… I have tried and failed to make me singing this song sound anywhere near good, I think you have taste similar to my own, I know you seem to like a song having a crescendo, I love this too, gives me chills. Loving your channel Jovaughn keep them coming 🙏🏻👌🏻👍🏻
Love Sting, love this song. There are also so many other fantastic songs that you can check - "English man in New York", "Brand New Day", "Shape of my heart", "Russians".
I agree that they mesh together so well. The Arabic singer, Chebb Mami, is amazing, and Sting's lyrics are consistent with traditional Arabic themes, as you said. BTW, you should check out the lyrics in English and Arabic, which are incredibly beautiful and concise.
Backupsinger?!?! Its a duet... original this song was named 'Sting featuring Cheb Mami - Desert Rose'. Cheb Mami is worldwide renowned as a Rai singer. Classifying him as a background singer is like cursing in the church. But Sting is trying to write him out of this track, because of some serious mischief of Mami's part!

Memories of Hachemi in the Sahara

Thank you from that❤️🇩🇿
You can tell that Sting is a musical genius. Every note, chord, chord inversion is well planned out.
A master of world music in so many genres.
Such lovely people on this channel. Respectful, articulate, smart and sweet comments always.
Goosebumps when Cheb Mami sings!!!❤❤❤❤
The singer singing with Sting is Algerian musician Cheb Mami. He fit in perfectly with the desert-themed song. This song and parts of this footage were used for a Jaguar commercial a while back when this song first came out.
The musical arrangement of this song is genius!
Cheb Mami is awesome he is from Algeria and his voice is tingled with modern and ancient Arab tones
Yes, Cheb Mami is awesome. He has a great "oriental" voice. But unfortunately he is a very very bad person. 😕
@Tara king
Cheb Mami was sentenced to five years in prison. The musician has abducted his former wife with the help of three accomplices and brutally tried to interrupt her pregnancy. But violent abortion has failed.
@snoopdoggdoggystyle604 who cares punk

"Until" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, along with some other Sting songs. He really is a different class of musician.
Bro Cheb Mami voice so smooth both Sting was great ... cheb Mami hes from Algeria and we call it Prince du Raï he was singing at 8 years back in 90s
saw Sting at an outdoor arena in Phoenix. he played this song while a monsoon storm raged in the distance. one of my best concert memories ever!
Sting is such a talented artist. His lyrics are second to none
Fields of Gold
Is another moving song about his love for his wife
Fields of gold is a great shout !
Well actually second to Pink Floyd, RUSH, Stones, Steely Dan, Zeppelin, etc ... that being said this song with Cheb Mami was pure genius
Great suggestion! It's not about his wife though. It's a fictional tale he thought of when looking over the fields of his farm in the hills and imagined the lives of the previous owners. Fields of Gold is the best! You melt right into that song.
Yes! Fields of Gold is great!
sting end mami
YES!!!! Fields of gold is the BEST!!!!! PLEASE!!!!
Russian 1984 by sting is another masterpiece
This is the most beautiful song that I think I ever heard from Sting. I agree, it’s perfectly blended.
Sting is like a musical magpie the way he can pick different sounds and layer them into one.
YESSSS STING
You should definitely check out his other songs "Fields of gold", "Shape of my heart", Englishman in New York", If I ever lose my faith in you"
I can listen to Shape of My Heart over and over.
Fully agree. Exactly those!
Love that song...that was in "The Professional" right?
Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting: All for Love ,when you get a chance have a listen 😊 their voices sound amazing together 👍

Awwww I’m so glad you have listened to this, I wrote for you to try this a couple of nights ago, sooooo happy, us subscribers do have very good taste 👌🏻🙏🏻🥰😁
I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire
This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this
And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems
I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
The rare perfume is the sweet…
I have tried and failed to make me singing this song sound anywhere near good, I think you have taste similar to my own, I know you seem to like a song having a crescendo, I love this too, gives me chills. Loving your channel Jovaughn keep them coming 🙏🏻👌🏻👍🏻
