Something I don't see much about on UA-cam is fish people talking about the fish psychology. My guppies, Bettas, Plecos, Goldfish and yes, even Ramshorn snails all have personalities. I am AMAZED at this. I have been studying these fish and snails for years. Their energies and habits are very individualistic. Even their food preferences. Who knew?! I'd love to see more videos about this.
This video was perfect timing - I ordered the same fish and although I had no DOAs, they were all thin. I did most of what Blake said, and slowly they are getting fatter. It was a surprise because I had bought fish from the same supplier before with zero problems. So I was beyond shocked to receive fish that did not look like what I was expecting. Good tips from Blake as always.
I bought 10 fish recently and one little rasbora was really struggling when he arrived. To the point where in the past, i might have culled it. I gave it some TLC, and it's thriving now
Those were some lucky fish you got to find a home with you. I order online frequently, and I have had good luck. I order off of eBay and look for sellers with high ratings and good reviews. I also read the reviews. Any time I have had issues, the sellers have been good about righting whatever was wrong. Like you I record everything and follow the sellers directions on what to do if there are problems. Buying from eBay helps too as they have a good seller program and they protect the buyers too.
@@ianferguson4728 I might just do that! Plants have been bedding in for a few months, will have RO water to cut into my liquid rock next week to bring dKH down from 24 (yes, that's over 400ppm) to something Neocaridina shrimp can tolerate and molt in. When the Neocaridinas have established a healthy colony, I'll be looking for some of these beauties.
@ProdigalAquarist they aren't particularly shrimp safe, so be careful. Ours had a go at smaller shrimps. Also, I believe they like more Alkalinity. Our shop tank is just tap water with co2.
@@ianferguson4728 I had considered that. My water parameters are very Neocaridina-unfriendly. I've been out of the hobby for 24 years, just getting back into it. Might give up on the shrimp and just keep some really cool fish.
Great video. I've only ordered fish once, and I got more than I ordered, and they were in great shape. They only traveled app. 100 miles, but they were packed like they would travel thousands. I prefer to buy from my local store, but sometimes they can't get what you want. Take care, and cheers!

Very interesting and informative video Blake, with a lot of useful tips. When doing a salt treatment what would be your minimum dosage per litre of water and is there a maximum number of doses before you need to do a water change? A similar video on introducing wild caught fish to a tank would helpful as well.
Hi Blake. I have only ordered online once. All arrived fine but lost a few in the weeks after. But my water is high PH which I lowered initially. Temp adjustment then quick out the bag and in quarantine. Ich developed in two weeks over the weeks adjusting to my ph, some made it, others didnt. I rescued an Anglefish at the petstore, attacked by all other Angels and almost no fins left and some body nips. She gave him to me saying probably die in a few days with stress. A month he is growing fins again and very happy interacting with me 😊 Do you have Congo Tetras or done a fish file of them? Im wondering how old they are when they develop their colour and elaborate fins, mine may be all females or just young. Keep up the good youtube content 👍
Great info Blake. I might be cynical, but if they send you more than you ordered, they probably think a few will not make it. Whether that's because they are in poor shape to begin with or they don't ship well. Maybe Burmese Rummy-Noses need to be shipped differently to other fish.
I would never buy a fish online. Unless I trust the supplier implicitly. I've seen some nasty stuff here in South Africa. Just recently, there was someone who sent fish in a 2 litre coke bottle. If we are asked to send fish to customer who can't get to the shop, we use medical grade oxygen and a drop of stressguard, pack less per bag and use only a courier we trust. We imported Sawbwa recently from Indonesia, they arrived in shocking condition. We then imported from Taiwan. Stunning quality.
I have Sawbwa, they seem susceptible to parasites or something that makes them waste. I treated mine and most recovered, but it reoccurs. They are beautiful though.
Where do you get your fenbendazole? I lost a whole tank of fish to camallanas worms once because I couldn't find the stuff anywhere. At least, not in a form that was suitable for fish. The vet said it was the only thing that would treat them.
@@LushSaltyAquariums it was when i learned about how opening the bag and exposing the water to oxygen instantly changes the ammonium to ammonia and crashes the ph. Im sure marinating in some of that nasty toxic water for a few minutes does more harm than a cupful of tank water benefits. 🤷♂️ thats kind of what tipped me over the line
Plop and drop if the fish have been shipped or in the bag for over a day. If from your LFS or sourced locally then acclimate as you have been doing. As Blake said it's the build up of ammonium that determines the method.

Always dry your fush before introducing to a new tank, even a quick cycle in the dishwasher if you have time 😅😅😅
Thanks Blake, some good info. I love to hear this while working, better than music ;)
Great to hear!

How about drip acclimation in cases where the PH in your tanks is different than the vendor's?
Great tips. I ordered some fish online last night. Fingers crossed 🤞.

So you're a 'plop and drop" guy? I always wrestle with doing that or adding some of my tank water to bag first. What made you decide against doing so?
